Old buildings with granulating watercolor

Old buildings with granulating watercolor - student project

Hi everyone,

For these paintings I used neither Tundra Violet nor Desert Green. I heard that Ultramarine from Daniel Smith is extremely granulating so I used it as a basis for my color mixtures, also little amounts of Potter’s Pink by Daniel Smith. In addition, I used Mars Black, Cadmium Red, Emerald Green, Burnt Siena and Raw Siena from White Nights. Also, Sap Green, Gamboge and Orange by Mijiello and little amounts of White Gouache by Schmincke.

The second project was more challenging due to its many details. The most difficult thing were the arches because there are so many and the drawing was to a great extent covered by the background washes.

My first try was fine but the arches were uneven and crooked, so I painted it a second time which I uploaded here.

Still, I was not really satisfied with the arches so I looked for more pictures  (by the way this is St Dunstan in the east city of London). I fell in love with this building, so I had enough motivation to change the picture a bit to paint it in more detail. However, I could not do the whole background wash at once because the color spread too much and I could not see the drawing underneath. I used Emerald Green for the mossy parts and it spread too much, the color is very staining. So here you see my fourth try in which I painted the background in several steps. I really enjoyed this wonderful building otherwise I would not have had the patience to try that often.

I really learned a lot in this course, it was particularly encouraging because there was so much texture in the paintings, so if something went wrong it could easily be fixed or covered up without being too obvious. I started painting four months ago and I only tried out landscapes and flowers so this course was a totally different subject and I loved it. It encouraged me to try  different things and I discovered that I absolutely am in love with old castle buildings. I can use the knowledge for future paintings in combination with landscapes and flowers. It was a bit challenging though, but absolutely worth it, I am so happy I participated in this class and tried even if it didn't work out at first try.

Thank you, Elina!!!
