Beginner Colour / Color Theory - Painting With Saturation and Neutrals

<p>Getting the saturation right and the reflection from the light. I feel like the tomato came out pretty good.  I also feel like I over worked the paint trying to get it right.  For lesson five in going to switch back to Acrylics.  Speaking of lesson 5. With the phthalate blue... I have two, red shade and green shade. Which do you suggest ?</p>

Ah, got it. I think the tomato came out pretty good.  There's a good transition of saturation as the light moves to the shadow. I can see now what you mean by the reflection though. Just a bit too warm and saturated on that shadow side making it look a little unnatural. Think mathematically with an area like this -  red object + blue reflected light = purple-ish neutral for the shadows.  If you're having trouble with controlling saturation the simplest thing to do is just practice creating different swatches with different intensity levels. Of the three scale of colour this is probably the trickiest to control because it we're getting very specific with our mixing and it's easy to mess things up. But keep at it because you're off to a good start so far. <div><br /></div><div> As for you Phthalo blue question, I would lean to the greener shade and use something like an Ultramarine Blue if you have it for your warm blue, but you can probably get away with using the red shade Phthalo as your warm if you don't have another option.  Just be aware that the difference in temperature is probably going to be more noticeable in something like Ultramarine. I'd also recommend if you have it using a dark, saturated green too for that lesson. Let me know how you go with that lesson and if you have any further questions about this one.</div>

<p>Hi again Glenn!</p><p>Thanks for posting again. The fruit looks quite bright in the photos. The plum in particular looks a little too uniformed in it's colour saturation, could just be the lighting in the photo though. What were you struggling with in that lemon/plumb image?</p>

<p>I struggled a little bit with the plum &amp; lemon drawing. For the tomato, I washed out my palette and switched to Winsor &amp; Newton gouache. They dry with kind of a milky finish. </p>
