Here are my starts! This is how I typically will start my character drawings and portrait paintings. I feel like the first 10-15 minutes can set the tone for where the piece is headed. 

I don't stay locked into these methods every time. Everything is flexible in art. This is just how I typically start, and these have become processes I can trust!
