Mr Fox: A Free-Flow Watercolour Masterclass with Jane Davies

I am starting to look at doing this project so was looking thorough the projects and resources.  I really love how you did Mr. Fox and added your creative touches. This is really great!

Kris, this is magnificent!  Your fox has such depth and your creativity shines!

Your Fox has so much character and I love your style. I saw in a comment that you used white watercolor pencil. Which granulating brown did you use or is that a pencil or crayon?

Thanks Chris! I used Daniel Smith Nickle Azo Yellow (a get outta my way color), Transparent Brown, Sepia,Fired Gold Ochre and Burnt Sienna. The watercolor pencils I love are Derwent Inktense. I dragged to white over that area to try to create more fur dimension then hit it with a clean damp paintbrush to blend it in a little. That brown is either transparent brown Jane suggested or Fire Gold Ocre. Thank you for the info. I think I need that fired gold ochre! Your techniques really produced an interesting, beautiful result!

Oh goodness, he is amazing. I love the character you created and all that fabulous texture. Just curious, what did you use to create the white coat? It’s so effective. Oh, and I love the whiskers too ;-). I can’t quite stop smiling at him. He needs to have his own storybook. I think he would get up to lots of mischief ;-) :-)

Thank you Jane. I started with the bottom photo and after a break decided to add some full range of values -darks, midtone and higlights. I used a Derwent white watercolor pencil for that white fur blending it into the orange. It went on almost like dry brush but softened with water. The rigger brush gave me the best whiskers, although I tried a gel pen. And I agree with you-that eye is positvely wicked with his sly grin. Dont trust him!

Oh interesting, I haven’t used watercolour pencils for a long time but it’s given you some fabulous effects! Well, I think I’ve slightly fallen in love with him. He’s an amazing character :-))

ah! Maybe he is Pinocchio's fox afterall.

I like this very much!! He looks like he is plotting something brilliant.
