Metaball Patterns in Adobe Photoshop - A Graphic Design for Lunch™ Class

Wonderful pattern for your New Year greeting! Is this a meatball pattern on which you have superimposed other images?

Thank You Anna, I was so fascinated with the Gaussian Blur =&gt; Posterized and =&gt; Gradient Map, that I went and tried another Custom Shape to see what happens... it's like Magic! I'm going to make my own Custom Shapes and combine them next.

It looks magical! Looking at it again after reading your reply, I can see the shapes blurring into each other. Unfortunately for me, I am using Affinity Photo instead of Photoshop, and organic metaballs is one of the few things I've discovered that does not seem possible with that application. Congratulations on your innovation, and happy designing in 2017!

Love them all, particularly the metaball with the eyeball and orange dots in between, the first big image. Meatballs, very funny.

Wonderful work Lisa. The first time I ever saw these shapes and what they were called - I read them as meatballs so I called them that for such a long time till someone called me out on it! I still have to correct myself and make sure I call them metaballs.  I love your version with the extra circles in the shapes - they look just wonderful.  Thank you for posting your project - I am looking forward to seeing what you make of the organic shapes.

Oh!!! I just love this Adjustment Layer situation! Genius!!! Helen Bradley :-)

Isn't it? It is so much fun. There is a process for extracting lines from an image that uses a blurred layer in a similar way to this  too - it's a bit hard to get your head around why it works but it is so awesome here when combined with the Posterize adjustment layer and those gradient maps. I love your resulting pattern Lisa, it looks great. Kudos on layering the organic version over the very structured version.
