Art of Texturing: Realistic Fur with Indenting and Graphite Pencil

Thank-you so much for taking the class and for uploading the picture.  Firstly, I would say don't be too self critical.  I think that you've got a lovely picture and it's a great composition.  You will naturally get tighter with the texture with practice, you just have to keep telling yourself that you are literally drawing every hair.  The eyes have great character and the whiskers really stand out.  Also the noses have a great wet look to them and it's such a great title, it fits the picure perfectly. 

In terms of dark tone, I think you may find paper will make a huge difference.  St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford 300g Hot Press takes dark tone beautifully, so it might be worth getting a sample to try.

Another thing it might be worth playing with is using a little bit more pressure with the darker pencil but I think it would probably be more down to paper choice.

Thank you so much for the lovely comments and feedback. That paper is hard to find in Canada so I will have to order it in. I will be moving on to your eye tutorial and work on getting the indentations tighter.

i was also going to question the paper, i watched another of jamies videos and he suggests thicker cotton paper for getting good indents. i have the bristol paper but im going to try using my 300gsm 100% cotton arches watercolour paper. i have the 400 series bristol board but i dont think thats pure cotton and not sure what the gsm is. honestly though i think youve done an amazing job and i wouldnt have considered your drawing flawed in anyway, the white lines really do stand out well here.

Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. I really appreciate it. I have tried the paper that Jamie suggested but I really like the Arches paper now. I am still trying to perfect my techniques but I am having lots of fun 

I also use Arches Aquarelle 356gsm.  It is a brilliant paper and is incredibly tough.  The only thing I would say is that it does require more pressure to indent the texture as it is tougher than St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford.
