Learning to sketch

Learning to sketch - student project

This is the first time I have ever done a sketch challenge. I'm not much into drawing but decided it was finally time to change that.

I was able to start off doing a lot of life sketches but hurt my back part way through the challenge and had to finish off with references. Even though we learn less through references than studying still life, I tried to take my time and really study each reference carefully to try to get the most out of it. I think slowing down was actually a breakthrough for me. Thank you Yasmina for this fun class.Learning to sketch - image 1 - student project

I decided to do this challenge all in pen so I wouldn't be tempted to erase.

Creepy dragon fruit. I wish I could have sat up and used some paints on this one. I still love how it turned out. Sketched from a reference. Being injured gave me so much time to sit and think things through before drawing. I really started seeing some improvement. This is teaching me that I need to practice more patience with my art.

Again, taking a lot of time to really look at something helped me sketch it more accurately. The flying fish in my cover image was sketched after the dragon fruit and before my froggie.

I did do quite a few sketches other than the ones I'm showing. I want to be realistic that it took a lot more drawing to see the improvement from the first image up to the last one I'm showing. :D

It was a fun challenge. I really don't do well at stylizing or memory, but being kinda new at drawing I'm not surprised. I'm not sharing any of those exercises here, lol. I will definitely need to spend a lot more time working on those skills in the future.
