Judy
Artistic mission- I started making documentary films recently. In many ways, I am learning as I film. There are so many stories, if only we care to listen.
I came across Judy's little peace protest group merely by chance. Initially I was in the area looking for leads on another story and happened to see Judy's Friday sidewalk protest. I planned on just documenting the Friday protests but I got to know Judy more, I also realized that Judy's profile would be incomplete without delving into the oral history project she started in 1979. I was intrigued by what motivated her to pick up an old tape recorder and record voices of women peace activists back then.
But it was challenging bringing these two parts of the story together- Judy's past project and Judy's present activism.I also wanted to create a dual sense of place in this film. The materiality of the present outdoor protest space where Judy and the group stands and the aural often image less spaces of the recorded voices that defines Judy's own activism to a large extent.
I filmed this piece on Canon Mark 5D mark iii with 85 mm prime lens and a 24-105mm. I regret not using a better sound equipment for the interview. But there's only so much you can do with a one woman filming team :).
