Dearest Sheryl, You conveyed wondrous truth, and in such there is much mystery. Last night I went to my old church for the Easter vigil, and your message was the first I read today. I am indeed resilient, and that’s really not a grace I asked to have bestowed on me quite the way it’s been. The sermon was about how saving are the arts. During the service, poetry was read. A new priest recited, from memory, a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins, a fravorite  Victorian poet of mine! Today I actually FEEL Easter, and your message blessed me. Thank-you. Jerney, The background wc sat around for over a week while I pondered being more loose and finding muses. I knew there was zero competition, but what did that mean to me at this moment in my life? Chasing depression away? Calling for help from the good spirits and, of course, the turtle-buddy? Fighting to figure things out, I guess. Your comments noticed some painterly aspects I hadn’t noticed. Like depth and mystery. When I painted the wc, I knew I needed water and light. The dark creatures and underwater helpers emerged. In a very personal way, this sort of loose painting is almost too autobiographical, and maybe that’s what my barrier is. Also, creatively, I have’t passed into the realms you are able to tred without fear. The exhaustion is partly how I can’t find and form the sort of beings in the background or chisel them into reality at my level of capabilities. What more can you do to help? Jerney, you have already encouraged me, and I jumped in. You noticed and met my submission with gracious and encouraging comments. When you say, “expressive,” what does that mean? I see that term all over, but it seems to mean any number of things, almost as generic as saying “acrylic” or “landscape.” I agree with you about trying small-ish pieces, and hope you can take some of those amazing examples you shared in the “Bonus” and stretch them out into short or mini classes for "beginning expressionists.” Is there such a classification? Ah yes that makes sense Judy! Heavy emotions being processed through painting can be both healing and exhausting. Working intuitively is a great way to sort through our inner struggles. For me anyway, it can lead to getting insights in my psyche as well as a release of emotions I sometimes didn't even realise I was struggling with.  Don't worry about your ability to unearth your figures. You're doing just fine and we learn as we create. It's the only way of rally learning.  What I mean by expressive painting is when we use the paint to focus on depicting subjective emotions and inner psychological states rather than objective reality. Colours may intensify or be completely different from what we're used to in a certain context. There may be distortion of the figures and objects, the brush strokes might be more raw, etcetera. Personally, I really love expressionism because it's very personal.  Oh I would love to have been able to create mini lessons of my procreate drawings, but the replays are soooo fast and I can't adjust the speed. But I can certainly think about a class, or maybe a series, on expressionism. Would you like that?

Ohhh Judy, I'm so proud of you for jumping in, I know how tough you are on yourself. :) I think it's beautiful and loose and I love your colours very much. The darker creatures on the left are contrasting nicely with the ethereal figures in the back. It creates depth and there's a beautiful mysterious atmosphere. What made it so exhausting for you? Can I do something to help you make it more relaxing? Maybe you could do small sprints of drawing over time? You did do a whole lot on your background and working in a new way can be intense emotionally. Again, I am so excited you tried my lesson and went all in! Very expressive indeed!

Painted intuitive watercolor background. Thought about muses and loosening up. Eventually took out my colorful base. Started working on it. For me, this was super loose and expressive. I'm no Jerney who astounds me!  She just keeps going. I got worn out. Glad I gave it a try and will try more loose art. I don't give up too easilly, bot for now, sign me Exhaustedly, Judy
