Indian Floral and Geometric Pattern

Indian Floral and Geometric Pattern - student project

This is an amazing class. I was going to use Affinity Designer and follow all the steps. Affinity Designer is my go-to vector app, and I used it to create the patterns you can see in the fabric swatches below.

However, because I am building a series of mockups using 3D software where I can swap out the patterns, I decided to try and replicate Tracey's swatch cards using Cheetah 3D.

I was vacillating over whether I should post these images, given I didn't use Affinity Designer in the end, and then decided that it was important to acknowledge Tracey as the inspiration for this work. I loved Tracey's use of the grommet and boxboard.

So thank you Tracey for a wonderful class. It came along at just the right time after I had just finished mocking up a role of wallpaper and fabric (see further down this post).

Years ago, I scanned a range of papers and boards, so the box board texture came in handy for this project.

Creating the grommet turned out to be easier than expected. Adding a subtle convex curve to the grommet surface adds to the realism. I applied a procedural brushed silver texture to the grommet to give it a rougher look.

I did struggle a bit with bringing out the texture of the fabric, but it is there. I may have to play around with the lighting to bring out the shades and shadows a bit more. The fabric in the top swatch is also a bit crumpled.

Below is the mockup of Wallpaper and fabric that I completed before discovering Tracey's class.

One of the reasons for using 3D was because I wanted the patterns to bend and warp with the surfaces they are applied to and to use perspective. I'm hoping this reduces the risk of someone screenshotting my work and selling it as their own pattern.

Here are some more recent mockups...

The next thing to mockup is some stacks of folded fabric, and fabric hanging from some hooks.
