Illustrating a Volkswagen Van with Hand Lettering

Illustrating a Volkswagen Van with Hand Lettering - student project

In this class, I used the techniques we’ll cover to create an illustration of a Volkswagen van, inspired by my love for vintage design and travel. I started by finding references that captured the unique charm and personality of this iconic vehicle.

Here’s how I brought it to life:

  1. Finding Inspiration & Sketching:
I gathered photos and illustrations of vintage Volkswagen vans and created a mood board to define the style and vibe I wanted. Then, I sketched out the van, focusing on its distinct curves and details, like the headlights and retro logo.

  2. Line Work & Inking:
Using Procreate, I refined my sketch into clean line work, keeping the design simple yet detailed enough to highlight the van’s character.

  3. Adding Color & Texture:
I chose a vibrant color palette reminiscent of the 70s, with bold oranges and blues to evoke a sense of nostalgia and adventure. I also added texture to the van to give it a hand-drawn, organic feel.

  4. Hand Lettering:
To personalize the illustration, I designed custom hand lettering that said, “Adventure Awaits!” Using Procreate’s brush tools, I experimented with different lettering styles until I found one that complemented the van’s playful aesthetic.

  5. Finishing Touches in Adobe Illustrator:
After completing the piece in Procreate, I polished it in Adobe Illustrator to adjust colors and create a scalable final version.

By the end of this project, I had an illustration that felt uniquely personal, blending digital techniques with creative storytelling.

This project is a great example of how you can use everyday objects or personal passions as inspiration to create art that’s meaningful and fun. I can’t wait to see how you’ll bring your own projects to life!
