The Epic Games Store is a popular platform among gamers worldwide. It allows users to search for games using various filters, create profiles, add games to a wishlist, purchase games, and more. In this project, I'm going to do a heuristic evaluation of the website of Epic Games Store to find out strengths and weaknesses according to the Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design by Jakob Nielsen.

 

• Visibility of System Status: The website keeps the users informed by providing several visual effects to indicate loading status, navigation, and scrolling.

 

• Match Between the System and the Real World: The website uses familiar icons and terms for the users by ensuring predictable interactions while ensuring trust in the brand. For example, to change the website language, they use the globe icon, which many users are familiar with its functionality across many websites.

 

• User Control and Freedom: The website provides enough control and freedom to the users to perform various actions without risks.
• Consistency and Standards: The whole website maintains a uniform style convention and familiar graphics and terms to align with the standards.
• Help and Documentation: The website contains a separate section for supporting users with different website functionalities by providing guidelines.

• Recognition Rather than Recall: The website provides well-defined UI elements such as banners, menu items, and form fields to help users achieve what they need fast.
• Flexibility and Efficiency of Use: The Website provides quick navigation within different sections and presents shortcuts to advanced users. For example, by clicking the header logo, users can navigate to different products offered by the same company. But this makes an issue as well because the logo is conventionally linked to the home page.

• Aesthetic and Minimalist Design: I think that the Epic Games Store website is a great example to admire about minimalistic design because of the way the information is presented. What I mean by that is, they have included all the necessary information and links to their products and games without compromising the simplicity. The website design is also appealing and catchy.
• Error Prevention: When it comes to error prevention, the website uses the age of the user to determine whether a certain piece of content is allowed to display to the user or not. So this mechanism allows the system to prevent displaying restricted content to younger users.
