Landscape Photography I: Interpreting Place Through Light

I really like your photo of the pier, especially the way that the hazy quality of the light fades out the hillside the further it recedes into the distance, it gives a nicely subtle backdrop and a very warm feeling to the overal photo. But, I really think the couple in the foreground makes this photo, it gives the shot lot of character.

Hi Joshua,Thanks for posting your project - looks great!Both have tons of atmosphere and great light, but compositionwise your second shot with the Santa Monica Pier is definitely a stronger shot.I never think to photograph landscapes with a telephoto, but I think the 85 gives a nice compressed look pulling the mountains, amusement park and subject together.Nice work.

I got the chance to shoot at Bixby Bridge on the way down from Santa Cruz and capture the light just after the sun&nbsp;had set. I'm using a Canon 70D and for this particular shot I was using a Rokinon 14mm Ultra Wide on a tripod.
I took the second shot at the Santa Monica Pier just before sunset, hanheld with an 85mm.
