On the left, there are 938 now-deleted conversations, some of them are read while others are unread, and there are 39 spammed conversations in spam, which are completely unnecessary. The labels are seen at the bottom of Gmail so that it is easier to navigate and find with colors referencing their respective logo colors.

 

On the right, the messages have been read and the numbers are cleared out.
