Glowing Greens with Gouache

Glowing Greens with Gouache - student project

Thank you Ayna for this wonderful class! I really enjoyed studying the light, colors and the possibilities of gouache. I feel like I'm starting to undestand how to better work with it, and that's really encouraging!

For this project I used paper Canson Imagine 200gsm cellulose (smooth texture) and it worked great for gouache!

Also, I mostly used a round brush instead of a flat one, but just because I'm more used to it.

Below are some process pictures (sorry about the lighting, I started to paint this last night).

Here's my sketch and underpainting. My underpainting looks very different from the tutorial: since my gouache is cheap/student-grade/not very opaque, I knew that it would be difficult to layer, so I decided to add the underpainting just in some areas (that I thought could come through in the end). I'm happy that I did that because yes, it was difficult to add layers, especially the highlights over the darkest parts of the scene. But the lightests areas were preserved ;)

Here is the first layer (and the moment I thought the painting would go all wrong...).

Adding depth and some definition.

Starting the trees and (almost) finishing the background. Also, I thought the shadows on the path were too vibrant and too blue, so after this picture I painted a layer of white gouache over them and got the shade I wanted.

Almost done...
