Finding My Style
This has been a wonderful first project. Looking back at my recent photos, there are a few themes that I am gravitating towards.
One is pattern (no surprises there)
The other is the flow of colour through a composition.
Patterns In Nature
One thing I am always keeping an eye out for is patterns in nature. Often it includes imperfections, e.g., leaves that are damaged by disease or age, but I'm okay with that.

I loved how calm the water was and how the rocks in the foreground grounded the image, the rippled reflection of the yacht masts dance across the top of the photo, and the mottled effect of the water's surface adds calmness to the shot.

By contrast, the eddies and churn of the water after a wave has passed when photographed reminds me of the patterns found in marble, which was once liquid under heat and high pressure. The same patterns repeat themselves everywhere.

The heart-shaped Kawa-Kawa leaves and dark shadows are typical for this plant as these plants thrive under the forest canopy.

I don't know what this plant is. I was captivated by it's colour and it's densely-packed flowers.

I'm always photographing the ground, whether it's a mechanic's oil-stained concrete floor, or a pavement as in this photo. I like how one small red stone can break the monotony of the surrounding grey pebbles set in concrete.
Colour in Composition - Street Photography
One thing I have always found challenging is taking pictures in public. Street photography has always been scary. I haven't quite plucked up the courage to ask individuals for permission to take their photo, so I'm sticking with croud shots or shots that don't identify the person for now.

This is a mural of Sir Edmund Hillary painted by the son of a friend of mine. I wasn't expecting it when walking around Christchurch.
This is what I started to notice in this set of recent photos. In this photo, yellow is the feature colour across the composition. Yellow road stripes, barriers, and the yellow decorative elements of the painting. This wasn't planned.

Similarly, the feature colour here is red as seen in the passing car, umbrellas, and signage.

When walking around I heard some chanting, so I approached the protesters and took this picture. It's the emerald green in the flags that is picked up by dress of the woman in the centre that makes her the focal point. I didn't even notice her when taking the photo. The green scooter in the foreground on the left was also a coincidence.

I made a conscious decision to take this photo, partly because of the blues and the oranges/yellows. I also took it because of the contrast between the words on the sign with the graffiti and state of the gardens.

This was an opportunistic photo taken with the iPhone. I avoided any identifying features of the guy feeding the seagulls, but didn't want to pass up the opportunity of getting some photos of the red-billed gulls.
