Architecture - The concept of futuristic cities is associated with innovative and sustainable architectural designs. A notable trend is the incorporation of green spaces within urban environments, such as vertical gardens, rooftop parks, and urban forests. Understandably, buildings are likely to be smarter and incorporating ideas on energy efficiency and be more adaptable in a turbulent world.

Transportation - We can already see consumers making a move towards environmentally-conscious transportation choices like public transport, bikes, segways and electric vehicles. Shared mobility, electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles are concepts that are becoming more prevalent. Also, fingers crossed for concepts like Hyperloop transportation, which will enable high-speed transport in vacuum-sealed tubes.

Sustainable energy - The move towards renewable sources of energy is accelerating, as countries invest in solar, wind energy as well as make infrastructural investments in areas like biofuels and hydrogen. Energy management solutions like smart grids and energy storage systems are being implemented to optimize energy usage and distribution.

Social Inclusivity - Even a brief discussion on smart cities cannot be complete without considering the social equity that needs to heart-and-center of the design. The 'Doughnut Economics' concept by Dr. Raworth stresses the need to create a safe space for humans to thrive, where social, economic and environmental needs of all are met. Urban planners and designers will be aiming to create this vibrant, safe space in our cities that address the needs of all residents and communities.
