DIY Concrete Backdrop
What a great project! So I tried to create my concrete/slate textured prop to be used for some food styling and product photography. I used 4 boards to have a set of light and dark versions. (I thought that was very clever way to save time and resources! Thanks for the tip Tabitha!)
I encountered some issues along the way nevertheless it was fun. One major issue was, I wasn't supposed to be painting inside the house to avoid splattering paint to our newly painted white wall, floor and furniture but then it started raining and didn't stop for few days. As a result, I had to paint inside and just had to be extra careful. The good thing was I found a 3 x 4 metre plastic sheet from the hardware store to cover the surface where I'm painting.
I started gathering everything I need. I was having trouble to find a container where I can put some water and my old sponge but I was so lucky that we just finished our tub of yogurt! YAY! I started with primer and left it for 20 minutes to dry. I continued painting my first board then the second board then i realised I realised that I used the black paint, never mind!
I only bought 500 ml of white and black paints so I didn't really get my dark board really dark but I think its good enough to start of. In the following day, I worked on my lighter board. I started with a little rough texture. as soon as I finished my first board Itook a mini coffee break and found a feather dropped under our tree!
So I decided to try creating this marble look using the feather to give some fine detailing work. This is very tedious work because once you put details you have to make it softer and blend it and redo the process until you are happy with it. Of course I ran out of white paint! so i had to use whatever white paint I have in the house just to complete this board. More paint and blending problems along the way but I finally completed it!
This actually looked great on my first attempt but I was so stubborn and carried on until I ruined it. I tried fixing it but I could not get it back to how it was. Next time maybe I will try this method again without messing about too much. Anyway, here are my final boards. I haven't tried using them but I will be keep you all in the loop and post my test shots on here very soon! Please share with me your thought.

Finally, here a a test shot using the dark back drop I made. I think its not dark enough but it will do for now. I also tried to play around with coffee and milk pour since I now have my backdrop! Its not that bad! ;)
