Thank you so much for sharing your audition piece! I’m so honored that you chose to include me in your vocal journey. Technically speaking, all your elements are consistent, including: pitch accuracy, tone, rhythm, and breath support. Now is the time to shift your awareness to the performance. This includes concentrating on your storytelling choices and emotional tone. Below are three simple ways that should help.1. Ask yourself to summarize the emotional essence of the song in one word. This will be the gravity that holds the whole piece together. Let the piano help you get there. What kind of mood does it set? Can you match that mood using only your voice? For example, the piano and lyrics make me feel “tormented”. Based on that, I would choose to sing this piece as if I was being haunted or toyed with by my own addiction. It shouldn’t sound pretty, but can still be seductive and rapturous.2. Your first lyric is what captures the attention of the listener. So let the lyrics do all the heavy lifting. Treat them as facts. Make sweet love to the lyrics as you sing them. For example, “I’m not the kind of girl you like…” That’s such an interesting thought. Show me with your voice what you mean by that. I want to see that thought overtake you – emanating throughout your choices. 3. Get your attention off of yourself by focusing on something in the room. It shouldn’t be a person. It could literally be the EXIT sign on the back wall. This will anchor any possible anxious energy, give you a place to aim your intention, and allow you to confidently explore the space around you.Things like sex, drugs and power are animalistic in nature. Songs like this have to be expressed viscerally and driven by a deep hunger. It should almost be sung at an instinctual level, never intellectualized. This can be scary stuff! You have to embody that part of yourself that would enjoy that kind of demise / pleasure. Dig deep and find it in yourself before you can own in front of other people.Again, thank you so much for sharing this with me! I’m so excited for you. You are going to rock your audition! By the way, I have sacrificed many a YouTube take due to my dog Mabel barking at the Mail Lady, Amazon Prime, UPS, and even just the wind. The struggle is sooo real.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I was honestly so focused on technique that I wasn’t acting to my full capacity, but knowing that my vocals are all set in place as they should be I can really let go. If anything I find the acting while singing thing easier than acting in scenes, and I do much better. I love deeply connecting to a character and putting my soul out there. I will practice with your advice until the “Acting On” switch actually works on command, not just when I’m in the perfect mood haha. I felt myself get in the zone while I was rehearsing yesterday and I’m very excited to see how it’ll go. Scared, but excited. I’ll come back to this and update you as callbacks and casting happen, since honestly a lot of the vocal freedom and that resonant sound in this I gained from your course.

Unfortunately, the director was someone I've had issues with in the past, and I believe she felt those were still relevant, considering I've received zero coordination since my audition and honestly people with a less developed skillset were called back and all that. It's incredibly disappointing that she still finds a quarrel over her neglectful treatment of our cast in a very emotionally draining show 5 years ago relevant, but here we are. I'm going to keep auditioning for other things, but this was my last chance in undergrad, and honestly, it sucked. But onward and upward. I know that I had the skillset, and it's not my problem what ancient issues she has with me. Just gotta keep the faith.
