Colourful woodpecker

So happy to see the notification for this class, and that it was a colourful bird - my favourite!
What a workout! My paper kept wanting to dry out before I was ready so it took a bit of finagling to keep it workable. The jumping around from this bit to that was good to show that there’s more than one way to approach a painting (and useful if there’s no hairdryer handy).
My own critiques of my painting: I didn’t get a lot of water splatters in for texture, I lost some of the light on the upper back, and in retrospect I should have tinted the white gouache more so it’s not so stark. But I’m still quite pleased with how it turned out.
I’m glad you took liberties with the colours of the original bird. I wouldn’t have thought to just change things up from how they are, since it’s an “actual” bird, but it really works. I have tonnes of bird photos I’ve taken over the years so now I’m inspired to try my hand at painting some of those.
Thank you for the excellent class Will!
