Color Grading from Beginner to Advanced in Final Cut Pro X

Hi! Just saw your review. Honestly wouldn't recommend grading if you're shooting on a phone especially as it's very unlikely the phone provides filming in different picture profiles or gammas that would preserve dynamic range in exchange of contrast and saturation and such. Useful to know how to white balance and such, but yeah FYI

Evan I have to confess, I thought the one on the right was your grade! <div><br /></div><div>Both look good to me but maybe depending on the video- if you were going for neutral like a tutorial then I'd say the right is more natural because of its neutral white balance (can tell the wife beater is white) and the skin is well exposed (I normally aim for 65ish for pale white skin like mine), if a little bit reddish. </div><div><br /></div><div>The left looks appealing to me too as more of a slightly moody / cinematic look mainly because the exposure is a bit lower (especially towards the edge) and the white balance looks a bit warmer as a stylistic choice. Your skin looks better to me on that one colour-wise. </div><div><br /></div><div>Both look good though and could work!</div>

Hey Myles! The one on the right IS my grade. If you happened to see the video on my channel, you'd definitely see something was off with it. The one on the left is shot cine4 straight out of camera. The video I uploaded on my channel was beFORE watching your video series. I was very much at a loss as (even you could tell), the grade was not bueno. Very dark. Not really balanced. I wasn't going to delete the video and reupload it with the fixed grade, so just decided to use my new skills in each video after. 
For videos like this, I'm not really pushing much for a "grade" but rather just a nice balance. 
Currently struggling with balancing - If the grey card is perfectly balanced, the white one (and back wall) is a tad green and if the white card is balanced than the whole shot is a tad magenta. Just playing around with it, but it's fine either way for me. :)

Ok cool, I think you nailed what you were going for in that case with the balance on that one :) <div><br /></div><div>I noticed the wall was a little green in the latest video but overall thought the colour was attractive! Your skin looked perfect colour and exposure, and you stood out from the darker background which I think is the main thing, then I assumed the wall was either being lit by something other than your key light (which might've had a green tint) or that light was bouncing off something green in that direction! </div><div><br /></div><div>It's really strange if the grey card is balanced but whites aren't even though they're measured in the same place!

If you wanted to fiddle with it, you could push the mids towards magenta on a colour wheel to balance out the wall / neutral colours, and then add a hue vs hue adjustment curve, grab your skin tone, and drag the skin hue down a bit on the curve to add more green and take your skin towards the skin tone line. </div><div><br /></div><div>Honestly I think you're fine either way as long as you keep nailing the skin tones and exposure!</div>
