Blossom Baby

Blossom Baby - student project

f age. I really enjoyed Vashti'S class. Not only helping me get more familiar with Procreate, but also learning how to 'paint' light and magic. For my character, I took inspiration from May Gibbs gum-nut babies. I'm Australian having lived in Auckland for 8-years so for me, the Puhutukawa tree is distinctively Kiwi. In full bloom, the bright red blossoms (around Christmas time) are just magic.

Here is my initial character sketch. I didn't want to venture too far from the brief, but at the same time, I wanted to play a little, so I instead of a gumnut baby, I designed a Blossom Baby... probably around 3-4 years of age.

I was surprised how quickly the background came together ... and learning Vashti's technique, painting light (and magic) was fabulous.

This is soooo far away from how I normally illustrate, I usually colour-in using watercolour. But what a fabulous class to learn more about how to use Procreate and and at the same time play with character, colour and light.

Thanks Vashti!

Unfortunately, my video didn't work out that great, as I used an old 'canvas' so my footage has two projects. I did like the idea of thinking about the video, and I'll keep this in mind for future projects!
