Baiana
For my class portrait, I chose to illustrate a Brazilian woman that is originally from Bahia, a place located on the north-eastern coast of Brazil. Women from Bahia are called Baianas, and some of them proudly wear a traditional costume that is colourful and it is part of Brazilian’s cultural heritage.
To come up with my portrait idea, I spent some time gathering reference photos for the pose, the clothes/accessories and the colour palette. Here is my moodboard where you can find my inspiration:
I also practised portrait drawing with the class exercises to feel more confident when sketching my final portrait:

I used vibrant and contrasting colours to bring this Brazilian vibe and added colourful accessories to my subject to make it interesting and draw the viewer's attention to the points I want to highlight in my composition. Here are my sketch and final portrait:
I can't wait to see your portraits, too!
Really hope you enjoyed this class! xx Agatha.
