Master Light, Shadow & Color in Watercolor Landscapes: Joseph Zbukvic Master Study

These studies are a great way to learn. Few of my takeaways from this study: 1. When painting background details, you can be very loose and abstract. It doesn’t need to look like anything in particular. 2. Apply paint such that it leaves little bits of white space or “sparkles”. It makes the painting more interesting. 3. Elements such as cows can be arranged in the scene to create a good eye movement. In fact, I am not even sure if the cows were present in the original scene. I know Joseph sometimes adds them in the painting for interest. 4. When there are repeating elements like cows in the scene, you only need to paint one or two of them carefully. The rest can be very loosely painted and yet, our mind will recognize them as cows.

This was a fun little study to work on. I worked only on one area of the painting that I found challenging. I would love to work on the full painting next. I worked on this in my sketchbook. For the full painting, I will work on a larger paper.
