Process Underexposed Images in Adobe Lightroom & ACR - A Graphic Design for Lunch™ Class

Obviously, the face is visible now but I think I lost a lot of the nice color that was in the sky. Is there a way to mask sections so they aren't affected when you work in CR?

Thanks for posting your project Linda. When you are working in CR, you can drop down the highlights to bring back some detail in the sky. Also you can use the Adjustment brush to paint back in some of the detail in the sky. You would paint over the sky with the Adjustment brush and pretty much do the opposite with the sliders - so, if you took Shadows to the right to get detail in her face you will take them to the left for the adjustment brush to paint the detail back in to the sky. There is not a mask in CR per se but you can use the adjustment brush and radial and graduated filters to the same effect.

Thanks, Helen. My version of photoshop just shows a pin instead of a color when I try to use the adjustment brush. I'll keep exploring to see if I can get a better result.

Ok! The pin you are seeing is where the adjustment brush is located. Every adjustment - radial, graduated, adjustment brush has a pin. That is used to select it - so you can find where it is and click on it to select it later on if you want to edit it or delete it. To see the mask overlay which is the color - click the checkbox for Mask at the foot of the panel (it is only visible and selectable when you have the actual tool selected). The Overlay checkbox controls the pin's visibility. Also note that when the adjustment brush is selected all the pins visible are adjustment brush pins so you won't see radial filter pins - you'd have to have the radial filter tool selected to see those pins.
