7 Days of Owls Sketchbook Challenge

Owls are mysterious, timeless, and incredible creatures for your sketchbook studies!…🦉 And then you can turn them into series, postcards, or just enjoy the company of the nocturnal muses. Maybe you’ll find something unique that inspires you personally!

I was inspired by Albrecht Dürer and vintage Natural History Illustration books to create a series of owl studies in my mixed-media sketchbook (I have a few sketchbooks of the same size, so I don’t feel additional pressure to “spoil” anything :)

Having a plan for this 7 Days Challenge gave me an extra reason to actually complete the Owly Project. You know how the creative mind works!…(๑˶˘‿˘(◠‿◠`๑)

Day 1 🖌️ Owl Feather Textures

I used colored inks and layered India ink for additional shadows.

Day 2🖌️ Silhouette and Form

I had wax pastels calling me for a long time…and I finally experimented with drawing using 2 colors. The wax pastels repel the water, so the chaotic, dynamic ink/water textures create a painterly contrast.

Day 3🖌️ Sgraffito Technique

Another reason to try something new! I got the erasing and sharpening tool along with a transparent handled brush (in the hope of experimenting with new techniques).. Sooo…our Owly adventures were a perfect fit.

I layered paint and added texture using the Sgraffito technique.

Days 4-5🖌️ Hero Owl

I painted my version in one sitting (during a long night session while everyone was asleep). I combined colored pencil outlines with bold (even neon:) colors.

Days 6-7🖌️ Owl Feather Digital Adventures

During seasonal colds and chaotic schedules, drawing on an iPad or computer can be a perfect fit. I approached it as a traditional painting, using lots of brushstrokes and textures.

During the challenge, I got some momentum and experimented even more!
