Beginner Figure Drawing Fundamentals  - Gesture and Construction

Hi Sariel!Thanks for sending the project through. Yes, practice makes perfect. I would recommend trying to practice each day even if it's only for a short period of time. You've made a very good first attempt with your sketches. I'm seeing some good gestures rhythm's, a nice understanding of overlapping, and some good structural foundations. You maybe need to work on the basic forms a bit more, getting that sense of depth and dimensionality, but overall I get the sense you've understood the basic concepts presented in the lecture. Thanks! Yeah, I had never done such fast studies before so I ended up going for the most obvious lines I could. I made a second batch (just uploaded it to the project!) with some more drawings and some more time, hope the structure there is a bit better! Also, I feel like there's a lot of anatomy I still can't remember on my own or just don't exactly know how it works, I'm looking forward to making some more "explicit" anatomical studies so I know what bones and muscles are doing, you think that could help with structure?

Great work! Knowing anatomy is of course going to be beneficial, here's the reality though, you're never going to know your anatomy 100%. Even the best draftsmen in the world still have areas of the figure that they have trouble remembering, so it's going to be a never ending learning curve that you're on.  But there's two schools of thought with figures, one is that you have to have a thorough understanding of anatomy to draw it, the other is you only need to focus on the shapes in order to draw it. I've learned from teachers who come at it from both perspectives. I sit somewhere in the middle. I think it's important to have an understanding of where the major muscles groups are and how the skeleton moves, but I also don't think you need to be an expert with that knowledge.  We're not doctors, so shape and form is more important than being able to identify every muscle and piece of bone. It's helpful information, but not always needed information. It's more important in my opinion knowing how those underlying structure actually function and move, how the arms move, how the torso twists, where things are positioned, what the rough proportions and shapes are, etc.  But by all means study away with more advanced anatomy classes, in fact I might do some of those classes in the future. It's not going to hurt in the slightest to study, just remember there's a lot of information under the surface, so be kind to yourself if you feel like you can't remember everything. The truth is no-one has perfected it, so don't put that pressure on yourself.

This was the result of the Timed Exercise Session, not great looking but I guess practice makes perfect! Can't wait to compare this with what I can do in say... 6 months
