1. Session One The pleasures of making a rustic bench: Good morning. My name's
Ian Brunelleschi. I live in how that
testimony Here. Julianna, to share
with you my ideas and skills totally on how
to make a rusty pinch. Now, patches are wonderful
things because people have stood up really
sleeping in my opinion. Some way. Eventually
something around forever. And maximum is quite,
quite delightful. We are joined this program. Now betray it started a couple
of providers says here, if you're unfamiliar
with what are the tools, I sketched your
code back and look at my first few sessions where I have tutorials on
how to use tools. Most risk is using wooden talks, but because I've done a lot of that now, several sessions. In this session I'm
actually going to show you how to use a true press, which are really useful device. I'm exchanging a little
bit beyond hand torques. You can try it and look forward to your
feedback and ideas. Now, before we get started, I thought might be fun delivery. Few images of some
really beautiful pinches and get some inspiration. Alright, let's get
down to business. Here's a picture,
but pretty handy. I can teach you a quarter of
the designers of the bench, which all benches are
different of course, because the material
here is different, but the structure is the same. If you look at this
particular bench, has some similar structures. Now when it's turned
over by the bank, is made up of several
obvious parts. First is the benchtop, then the holding boards, the legs, the
strengthening pieces, and the cross pieces. And I'll look at each
one of those in detail. Now. The first step is
to find the top. That's quite fun because
you can find large pieces, award or small fence that
you want to join together. It's got to be reasonably solid, probably fit fairly thick. It is pretty rarely sit on it. But it can be anything can be as rough as anything because you send it down and then
I'll make it really nice. So let's first step
is finding the top. Now, once you've
cleaned up the top, the next step is to turn
it either putting in place the holding boards wanted either end and
one in the middle. After the harvest are
made of afterhours, they're made of
course, then the legs are inserted into the home. Step, step four is to
attach to cross support. The legs are held
together, as you can see, such apartheid holds
them nicely together. Saudi people, we
have rigor random. The second one move. Step five is to place the strengthening
pieces into position. Now go from the
center of the bench up to the cross supports, as you can see in the diagram. Then finally, flip it out. Give it a nice sand
and probably oil it. Enjoy your work. That's what we're gonna
do in this program. And I'm going to show
you how to do each step. Regard along. Hope you enjoy it.
2. Sesion Two Starting at the Top: Probably a good spot
to start with the top. This is really
interesting because you go out and you find the top. Can be rapid pace award. It can be a couple of places
you can join together. Then everything else
flows from that. Let's course, the
first thing to do is to find a nice piece of wood will use for the benchtop
or further shaped top. You can see here I've
got a lovely piece of pine which is
unique to test manual. You can really use
anything that you like. You can of course, join
timbers together as well. Have a look around, find
something which, which suits. And the next thing to do
after that is to clean it up. And as you can see here,
it's fairly rough. I'm going to use a hand
held electric sander, but I'll make a start on that and work my way
around the edges. Of course, you can't
really see here, but the edges need to
be centered as well, so it's not too
sharp when you put your most people put
their hands on it. This end. I'm not sure what I'm
gonna do with that. Pretty rough as you can say. But I still like it
because it's got a lot of character. I'll have
a play with that. And we'll go from there. Just in case you've missed my tutorial on how to
use electric Sanders, I'll give you a quick rundown. Really useful machines. I do suggest you get
one, but remember, as I've said many times before, make sure you get a good
quality one. Save up for it. Get your friends and
relatives to give you a few, but they do not get cheap ones. Several reasons. One is
I just ended in tears. And secondly, the terrible
for the environment. Now in this case, I'm
going to start with a 40. That's 40 grids per inch. And, and it's pretty cool
because this is pretty rough. We're not done that. I'll change to a 120, which is my smoother. You can continue to get
smoother if you want, but it's an Italian banks. So people are sitting on it. Please. Things peel
on and peel off. Make sure you get
the holes right because that sucks up the dust down here, which you can't see. I have a vacuum cleaner which
I got from the tip shop, which works beautifully.
When you start. Delta is there's
always a speed here. If you're unsure about these things that you
haven't used them before, you put it on a slow speed until you get more comfortable. Always hall with two hands
and land like an airplane. You started up, you got it
down solid and move it around. I'll show you a little
bit of what I do, but I won't share too much
because it's pretty boring. And then I'll talk about it. Finds, of course, you can say that it's
time to get there. So another ten or 15 minutes and I'll have
it quite smooth. And then I'll move
on to that one. All right, now, otherwise which
you can do, just lose it. And I'll show you in the
next course quite one of the most enjoyable
tools in the plane. And not thought
about that before. You're gonna get a good one. Some of the odd ones are quite good and you
can pick them up. If it's very coarse
and rough like this, the trick is to go
across the grain. That way. You can see it starting to
come up really nicely. Very enjoyable things
to do planning. I can't go into
here because I have covered how do you plant
in another tutorial. But basically, again, it's like an airplane landing down and up. In this case are a
few deaths there, which means the
blade is crooked. And you can adjust that
with this device here. Matter of playing random learning how to
use these things. And now down a bit. You can see beautifully and it's a really
pleasant way to do it. Of course, remember a
bit of paraffin wax. Big difference. Notice the difference already. Once you've done that, then you can go with the grain. Beautiful to see if
it's very rough, longer plane got across. Why? Because obviously that
will make it straight up. You can get all sorts
all lead to the plane. Once that's done, then it's
just a monitoring by hand. That's question who is actually already so you can just
smooth, hopefully by hand. You can say that it's
coming out quite nicely. It probably needs a little
bit of a bit more sending, but it's looking really good. And it's probably the
point where you can start to do some construction
and do that. First turn would either. And I'll show you
what to do next.
3. Session Three Finding the legs: Now we're going to say,
this is really the family. This when you go
out and abortion, wonder around with your friends and find the pieces
that you want. So you really want for
rationally solid links. And if you cross pieces, I'll show you what that
looks fine in this session. Yesterday, I went into the bush and a friend of mine
cut some wood for me. As you can say this, some shorter bits there which I think I'll use for the legs. And the longer thinner bids were challenges to
carve it closer. So you can see they
will be used for the support across the range. And I'll explain that later now. I'm going to pick out the ones I need and then we'll have a
chat about it in the workshop. So as you could say, I've selected a few
sticks to the legs. The legs on the height
of the benches is about 20 inches or
about 530 mille. So you can see when you look at the type that I've got a
fair, fair choice here. Some of these limbs are
absolutely beautiful. Look at the markings on
that and think how do I will come up nicely
as part of the bench. In fact, I really, it's gonna be
really hard choice. What I'm gonna do now
is select where I want and then cut them down to about 21 inches because that gives me a bit
of rent to play with. And I can always cut it off
to make to make the right. Sorry, do that and then
I'll get back to you. It's important to try and get
the strike bit of the wood. As you can see,
there's a stripe bit there and then it curves off. The stride is a Beta. Unless you like cookie, cookie, cookie legs,
which is fine. Now I should point
out that the height of the bench is about
53 or 20 inches. But in fact, you
have to take into account the thickness
of bench itself, measure the thickness of the
bench and then cut it less. I'm cutting this job at 20 inches and then I'll
cut it back as I made it. In this case, I
quite liked the kink and the bandanna would sound good to actually
keep some of that. Might lay more interesting. The next thing I've done is
found three blocks of wood, one for each end
to hold the legs. So I'll put a hole
here and here. And the legs will come up as you can and
you could imagine. And then in the middle is for the cross pieces across spaces. We'll go into this
and we'll go up to join onto the middle part of
the connector of the legs. That's not too hard
to understand, but it'll come clear. And you could see that from the beginning pictures anyway. Find three box fight that fairly thick that you've got rooms
to put The put the legs in. Well, I've chosen the
forelegs and I'll want to use which we're just
starting to take shape. First thing is you
can say they're all fairly rough on the axon, but some of them really
beautiful coloring as well. What I wanted to do is give it a quick sand to take off the
rough stuff that I'm in, I can actually leave. It's quite nice. It's really your decision. But you see this has got a
beautiful lines in hand. Shoeing. See that? I'm
really don't want to spoil. So I could send it or I could
just leave it as it is. That's a choice for you. I've decided I've got to give
this one a beautiful clean. The way I'm gonna do that. I'll just give you a
bit of a demonstration so you can see how it works. You can't just type back off
yourself. If you want to. Give it a quick sad or I'll
show you what I'm gonna do. Bit noisy, I'm afraid. Well, I should give you enough of an example
to see what I'm doing. Things. They say slab digital hook. Yet. I'm going to leave that
because I quite like it certainly wasn't late. The lovely max width that would have gone in cleanup.
And I'll come back to you.
4. Session Four Fitting the legs: Once you put the legs, had
to fit them onto the top. And that's quite a, quite an important prices
because it's strong. Because logically mark sit on the bench and you don't want to clashing. Very embarrassing. I'll give you a few
hints on how to do that. This is probably the most
difficult part to get right. What I want to do is put the legs a little
reference angle. The base is stable. Now, to do that, I've got that by hand drill, which I hope you've got the wind is drill
bit that I've got. In this case, it's 35 mil, which is a node
that is in inches, but each reasonably y. And as you can see, quite close to the
thickness of wood, what are we going to do
is target bit of a guess. That's the link that
I wanted to put here around the
lake at that angle. I'm going to put the true
been bad that angle. What do you want to do? Drill a hole here at that angle. Now, I'm going to put it
in the Feist to do that. Keep the ankle in mind
and drill it through. I'm going to try to
liberate Varner gratitude. It's not a bad idea
to put the drill on slow with big drop. It's it doesn't put
stomach to restrain on it. I'm going to put it into here. First. I'm going to drill in, strike down just to start
and then go in at an angle. It's quite close to the edge. But see how we go. Then turn it to a, to the x. You can say that the
Hollywood is starting. So I won't bore you with you
having to watch me drill it. I'll draw it down and then I'll show you
how it comes out. Now, one of the lovely
things about woodwork here, of course, is that it's
all about problem-solving. Last night when I was
showing you this, I started to drill through here. And the middle of the
night, of course, which is the time you
weren't base things that I realized it really wasn't thick enough that by
the time lag put a lake, one of these legs in here
wouldn't be strong enough. So in the morning I
got a thicker piece of wood and have now
drill the holes. That would now the next
thing I've got to do is fixed this piece of wood
onto the base of the state. I'm going to use these screws, which are really excellent. And you drill the mean with, I hope you can see each special fixture
which you can buy. It just goes into it. What I need to do first of all, get my drill and
drill holes in here, which are wide enough for
the screw to go through, but not into the base. Obviously. The other
thing I'm gonna do, I'm gonna drill to hold down here so that when
the leg goes in, I can put a screw through there. Then I'm going to do that and then come back
to you because I'm sure you don't want to
know if you're going to use your hand drill to put in put in the lungs. Truly unique to
change the second up here to where it says
screw or hematuria. It's a big protects the machine from ratchet with
these numbers around. I'd also suggest if you've got the
money to buy one of these, which are fabulous. My children gave me this
11 of those things. You didn't think you'd ever use, but use the whole time.
It's electric screwdriver. Basically. It just
works brilliantly. I can put that in,
put this into here. Any guys beautifully. Now
I'm going to do the rest. Just one little trick. I found that research
would the drill, but we're shammy a bit. I just rubbed a bit
of paraffin on it, makes a huge difference. The next thing I
want to do is like this lay fit in
there. Initially. Got rid of a kink, which is quite nice Really. I need to make this N smaller, smaller here to fit in the hole. Also, I really need
to catch across. It's bad that angle. It's kinda cross here. And so it can go in JPEG.
5. Session Five Securing the Legs: Once you've made the holes in the top or in the patient
text to the tall, then it doesn't
matter rounding of the wood that you got for the legs and make
them fit into the hall. There are two ways to do that. First one is rounding
and often fee. And the second,
which are sharing. The next session is how to do squares and put n squared
squared x squared. I need to measure the depth. Of course, I've got some idea
of how Hadoop I'm going. I'll just mark that
they're about here. Then I know how
much to take off, reasonably close, just a matter of shaving,
shaving and off. I can do that in a few ways. One is with a chisel and a mallet and put in the
device and chisel it off. And the second way is with
applying, applying it off. And I'll show you a couple
of those techniques now. First of all, I'm going to
show you is using a chisel. I use a chisel if I wanted
to check off quite a lot. And of course you use it. Good Au, solid knowledge. Just, just check. You can see it's taking off
and as a matter of so it's the angle side down and allows you to just
move up and down. That's taking off
quite a nicer a bit, which I want to keep doing. It's one of those chops. It, you just keep trying
different things. Now, I'll show you
now how to do it with a plane. Get up here. And you see here I've got a beautiful
little Stanley 45 here. I can just fairly going down, just shave it off
until those charges I want now I'm going to keep doing that and then I'll come back to you
when I've got it. Fit the hall. Now the other useful truth, it's just good
old-fashioned rasp. Rasp or few dollars. That can be just used
for rounding at all. Nice and easy texture on those last little bits
to make it fit properly. That's gone in quite nicely. Unless I'm quiet
place with that, It's quite, quite solid. When I finish, of
course, I'll put, put a screw in the
hole through here. But what I wanted to do that for a little while because I need to put her support across here and my native
bit of adjusting. I'm going yeah. You might have noticed
yesterday that I found it quite difficult to drill a hole into the
world at an angle. I've got it. I've got a trophy. I actually have a drill press, so oh, showing you how
it can be done by hand. I'll show an example of
a drill press slider. But then I felt last
night I might try something different and I
haven't done this before, so we can do it together. A thorough I would
go morrison tenant. That means I'm
gonna cut a square here and cut it
down to the depth, which about their cut a square here and take it
out and slip it in. Of course, when I cut this, each gotta be at an angle. I haven't done this before
with this particular thing, but it might be
easier for you then try to use a drill at an
angle. Let's see what happens. So I've got it in the file. I'm just going to put
the salt on the line and saw all the way
down to that mark. If it's fairly strike
grain going down. Yeah, Then you just cut it off here and then use a chisel. Just, just slice off the bits
that you need to take away. So in this case, it's actually coming
away quite nicely. And then that leaves
a square rectangle. Now, put that onto, onto here, market round with a pencil and then
start to cut it out. This particular joint is
cold and motors and tenant, oldest the heels back thousands
and thousands of years. Start with the chisel and
put them flat side the outside and then work
your way around the hole. You get a mocking.
I'll start here. I'll just do this and show
you how I got home a bit. Then work my way around. Now I've done that. The angle is at the bottom
and begin to chip it out as it comes right down. Just continue to heat it here. Now a couple of things. Of course, in this case, we're actually going to
go into a bit of an angle because we want the
world to go on an angle. Nothing which is quite
useful to do is to drill, to drill out sections
in the middle. It just makes it a lot easier. I'm gonna do that. Save you watching me doing it. And then I'll come back when
I've got a bit further down. When you started the hall, just put that more dressing
and see if it fits. In this case, I've
imagined to be big. So I'm gonna go a bit inside and then you can
start to work your way down. That did take a while. I must admit There's the motors touch and
there's the hole. Put my finger right in it. It's just a matter
of fiddling around. I don't do a section
on how to do Morrison Kennedy in another
one of the earlier programs. But you can see now that's
kind of fit in there and drag it down. It'll fit quite comfortably. What I also did is
you can see around, I've taught it at an angle. I've cut this bit at
an angle as well. All the way round. It fits in. It fits at a comfortable angle. Now, if you don't know, if I'm explaining
the SRE workplace, just drop me an email and the discussion and
I'll help you with it. Now it's metal, I think that's worked quite
well actually. So if you don't have a good
drill bit, try this way. It's not more pleasurable than trying to draw
with electric drill.
6. Session Six Strengthening your Bench: The final product
construction is, is to support the links and make them stronger legs
firmly in place. And the next thing
I would do is put a support across
between the two. In order to do that, I'm going to drill a hole
in here and in here. And then That's the weight to the drill bit and
then cut it back. Basically the way we
came up with the legs. I'll do that and then I'll
show you how it went. Since that's what you can see, I've drilled the hole
just slightly in. I wanted to go too far because
it'll wake in the leg and the end of the base across. I've shaved down so that it
nicely fits into the whole. What are we going to do
now is drill through here. I can put it about through
from the other side. And then we'll talk
about it further. The legs are in place. And now what I wanted
to do is put a bolt through here to
hold it into place. But I'm gonna drill it with
a small drills that first because I don't want it
to split the PCSK9 cross. Then it's a matter of
putting the Balkan, growing it into place. That makes it pretty secure. Now, remember, I've put house down the bottom,
so bottom here. I'm gonna put through there
as well to hold it in place. The next thing I want
to do is support the legs with cross
veins down here. As you can see, I've
picked two pieces of wood. What I'm going to use,
that little band, hold that one in and then cut across so that it
fits nicely onto there. And the same with that. And then I'll come back to and
show you how to secure it. You can say that I've
secured the support beams down here to the bottom, and one now hold
it quite nicely. I'm going to put a screw into, I'm going to put a
screw into this section and a screw into the
other side as well. I have drilled that because I'm worried about
splitting the Lord. When that's done. Then I'll catch
with this section. Well, as you can
save the Pinterest is looking quite good
unless fairly strong. But of course it's
probably, as you can see. So the question is
how to fix that? And notice now treat
at my woodwork, my grumpy mastered
school taught me that is you get a piece of
wood like this level at off. And you'll notice that this one is sitting above the ground. I've put my finger onto that. And all you do get a pencil mark around
all the way around, all the way around the lake. And then you do the same
with the other links. You mark all the way around
each leg and then voila. It will work. So I
hope that makes sense. I'm gonna do that and then
I'll show you how it works. Now before you turn
it back up again. Just putting the slider things which go in the end of the legs. Really important
because the legs would solve water
and eventually rot. By having one of these
on it, it does help. Basically pretty easy. They just have a Nile
and you just put it in. Bangladesh with a hammer. Should explain by painting
pretty easily. So be careful. You can say one
I've put in here, which is already in it. So do those for before
you put it up at all. Put it up and
everything works first. Okay. You can see now that the
patient is pretty much complete it all I have to now really getting out of
the sand at the top. And I'll talk about
that in the next, in the next program.
Makes session on me.
7. Session Seven Finishing and appreciating: Well, it's almost finished. The final part is
quite enjoyable. And that is putting finish
on the choice is yours. Mine, my suggestion is
that if it's indoors, you can do a black cat
or if it's outdoors, I'd suggest you do an oil. The advantage is that
after a year or so, it's just a matter of
stepping more oil on it. Well, which'll a spot
sand and pick more love. If you have left eye, it makes you already
sent a holding down which cushy helix painting, you're going to push
boundaries, honorable, honest, why school scorpions
created a wonderful range. Now, I just wanted to mention
here is that it's really important to oil underneath
the fate of the legs. But principally because that's where the water will suck up. Some serious damage. Nitric proof, few, few good
solid kites and following it. Well, that's the final session. I hope you've enjoyed this. Please let me know you're
recording any questions. I'm happy to help out. I hope you enjoy your pinch
and appreciate your work. Why not? Finally, always
write your name on the bottom on words that you might wash it off
skin to look created. Just an important
site to finish off. Here is the final product
of the base that I've made. I'm sure yours
will be too large. Place. Put it on the side
for everybody to say. If you have any questions, just drop them on the
discussion board. I'm happy to give some feedback. Thank you for being
part of my course.
8. Tutorial How to use a Drill Press: Well, good morning everybody. In this section, this is
a fairly brief tutorial on how to use. A drill press. Was mentioned. Normally stick with hand tools, but I talked for each stage, but we could extend
a little bit. In this session, I'm going to show you the part
of the drill press, how to use it, which
is not rocket science open chain is creating, but
you have to be careful. I mean, they seem too dangerous. If she mix. So please be careful where it
goes and things like that. You know the drill.
Let's say here, it creates a true press, consists of basic
obvious things. On-off pattern, piping
cycle and catch. Effective cleaner which
shows a good idea. Base plate, which are waiting in woodcutters.
On this side. It's fairly obviously the
handle is what you pull down. Carefully. Lower
the drill rig into the drill pipe can be adjusted to any
angles that you like, which is really useful device or so it's worth getting handheld. Vice example I've got there. It's worse useful
for small items, particularly kit your fingers
away from that drill bit. Using a drill price is not
really rocket science. It's quite simple. You
simply put in the drill, but that you want like this and wanted us all and
just pull it down slowly. Now you can adjust the speed at the top by changing
the police system. You can also adjust the height of the bank so
you can go up like that. And you can also twist it sideways so you
can get an ankle. Once you get it up close. Simply lock it in place
like that and switch it on. Very good machine, very easy. You can also use different
size drill bits and even make holes In Would you are looking
at getting more equipment? I'd strongly suggest
one of these. What I've done is put the
piece of wood at an angle. The drill bit will go down. Now, you can adjust
the plight, of course, with this machine
is quite difficult, so I've caught that and
I'll show you how it works.
