1. Woodworking Techniques for Beginners Part D: Making a Cutting Board: Well, good morning everybody. Well, it's morning where ion, which is in Hobart, Tasmania, some beautiful sunny day. I should tell you our weather can change at any moment. There are signs. If you don't like, whether he just quiet for ten minutes. Now, I'm going to introduce you to some ideas about making your cutting board and cutting chords are really, cutting boards are really nice things to have. The things you can use the whole time. You can even make them use them as a, as a, as a, as a mouse pad if you want it. Now. So why not? I'm looking at is this As I've made for the program? You can say it's a mixture of boards. So in this case it's beautiful. Salary told pi1, which is Tasmanian wood from the forest, Myrtle and joined together. But but there is a scrap. It's wood from my workshop which are showing you later. Really do anything you like. You can use any combination wounds which like which lie or you may not even decided to join that you may just want to use one piece of wood. At the top. I've cut a hole. And again, you can do that as a carrot horror or you just haven't strike and put a hole in hanging Iran. Now the key thing with this course is that I'm going to show you techniques, techniques of how to join an award that's a widening joint and had a clue it had a client package and how to cut the hall all using hand tools. I don't use any fixed electric tours because my idea is if do anything with Head Talks and we just got a homeowner in in Italy and look at how Stradivarius made his filings when they're beautiful. And all the tools you could, you can pick up and you could use. So as I hope you enjoyed this course, I'm going to take you through various series. I'm also gonna show you how to use electric sander and applying. Let me have you got any ideas or thoughts and get back into the program. So you 40 s0. 2. Session Two Design your Cutting Board: Welcome back. Now, in this session I'm going to Rabat. Designed only to show you how I sanctuary designs and plan what I do. Do that with just plain old fashion paper and pencil. And embedded in that when these fancy computer things and really kind of helped me the mightiest it into your head. What are you gonna do? And each step and how you do it, you work it out. That's the wonderful thing about about wood working until problem-solving enough. And at first you think of what you under the middle of the night, get down to the workshop and nothing else. Code your plan unless you are planets. So have a look at some sketches of, I've come up with Enter, and I'll run through that and see what you think, but share yours on, on, on, on the forum. All right, now, as you know, I generally like to sort of plan out what I've got to do. And in this case I'm looking at my king cutting boards. Now that can be anything that you'd like for any size that you like and any depth. Obviously the easiest way to do it. And we're going to draw this out. And then I'll show you is one way to do it is if you've got a piece of wood that's the right size, you can just cut it down to what you want. Now, this Peace Award may be striped like this one. And, and sort of pre-organized or, or it might be a lot, you know, where, where the HSI or different shaped. So this simple design is quite, quite fun really because you can find your own paces awards, which were glossy, large grain and, and, and make it quite interesting. I mean, simple as best really. So give it a bit of a jet. I just like doing. These coloring means a wonderful, wonderful pencils because you can just make your design people more interesting. Not that you have to do this. I just do it because I like to go. There is a really simple cutting cutting board. And as I said, it's just a matter of finishing it off with olive oil and, and enjoying it. And this one has several different pieces of wood. And it's really good, nice if you can get it contrasting wood. And you will see when we go down to the workshop, when I shave with what I'm doing the workshop, I've gone to really interesting pieces of talks would Tasmanian. One is learnt or which is red wood, beautiful forest word. And the other one is what's called salary top pine. And I'll explain that when we get down there. So again, just like hair color based things in and with a bit of water. And there you can see is irrelevant as cutting board. And as I mentioned, a whole layer which you can drill through. Be very careful when you drill a hole that you put a piece of wood at the back, clamp it on, and I'll show you that in a workshop and then draw it through Saudi. Don't split it. Again, sending that off and O'Shea had dollar joints in a minute and we'll go downstairs. And lots of oil, olive oil. Now, this is the design I'm actually guide to make downstairs. To show the other examples. We're simply here to give you alternatives. Remember, it's a jaw works. You've got to make it work for you. I'm going to show you this one. Not very good guidelines. And I'll show you why when it all comes together. Say that different orders coming in. A brilliant orange might help that one. Sort of, you know, not very nice thing is that that you could mixture and John and pure yo-yo pleasure. I mean, I just enjoy doing this as well as I entered, joined going would surely with that, that's what life is all about. Phase pencil things. Just led to this class a few years ago at the test mining museum, which was just, just wonderful. All right, now, let's have a look at discuss what after all. Now, you can see that this is slightly different. So the board's joined together, planks joined together, which I'm going to show you how to do that. I've also put a bit of a shape up here. Now, the reason for that is because I wanted to show you how to use a jigsaw and how to use a fret saw had a cut shapes in would. Also, it's got a handle. And I want to show you how to do that. So it's better trolling through and then, and then cutting. So that's where I'm going to do as the project. And again, you don't have through this, but you didn't bring anything you like, any size that you like. But this will give you some skills which are really, really important. All right, so I see you downstairs in a minute. 3. Session Three Making the Joints: In this session, we will start by joining them, drawing them mixed together. Now in order to do that, of course I need to be straight. And to do that, you use a plane. Planes are wonderful. Things had been around for centuries. I saw, I saw planes dug up from Pompeii Museum in London. And really, there are not much different. So I'm going to show you a few techniques on how to use a plane, how to make your joints as close together. And remember the polyline cannot perfectly data's map, Cisco and human. Ok. We're back in my workshop and as you can see, I've organized several paces award. Now this is beautiful salary top Pine from Tasmania. This is Myrtle. And you said that the contrast is rather lovely. I've, I've actually cut them to length. But it doesn't matter if they're unevenness atop told them together first and then cut them. It's much easier. When I do. You can see almost here, it's not quite level anywhere, but that does matter, will do that later. Now, it's important to I mean, shorter get things mixed up. So did two things. One is just number them, 1234567. And that way you might loose where they are. The other ways that you can do it. It's just two lines like that across. And then when you put it back together, all the lines match up. Now the next thing, of course you've noticed is that taxi doesn't fit very well. So the boards are made to be straightened up. And that's where I'm going to show you how to now using a plane. Remember, in this course he told about hand tools. If you've got a mite or somebody who's got a thickness, well, why not use it? But I think it's important to learn the hand talks. So I'll get organized and then I'll come back to you. So the technical term for this is a widening joint, which is pretty obvious. And what I'm going to show you how it's what's called a rubbing joint. That is, we just join pieces of wood together with without anything in between. Now, what you do is put it in the fire and look through, Look through the gap and say where the gap is. Canada explained very well. But if you heard like that, put your eye level through there, you'll say the gap. And then I'm going to play in this bit until I get it. Even. If you're planing, it's probably better to go concave like that. And like that. Because now pushed together, if you, if you plan for the ages, it's really hard to join together. So I'm going to put it in a vice and then I'll show you what to do it and they're on. Now, the planes that you use for. The longer the better. You say these two lovely big planes. I've got this one you may not have. I didn't have one for years. But it, it's, it's a, it's a commodity scholar actually standing number seven, As you say, it's perfect for this job. And this is slightly smaller, which is, which is quite long enough for this is you can say what is going to do. And you don't have long clients can use what you've got to see how we go. Okay? So to begin with is how the pipeline. And when you look down, down the blade, you'll say whether it's straight and where it's coming out. Now in this case, just a little bit crooked so I can adjust that second thing through courses. But it had a paraffin wax on edge. And then a land claim. If you hold the plane line on the ward, you can then look through and see where that where the gaps are. So in this case, it's up a bit here and here, called Pine back. Make sure your legs are in. X. Is too far out. So I just wind it back in and pitch more. Thank you. Now, once I've done that, I can then put the next pace on how did into place through the Max. Max. And I like that. It goes into place. And now I can look down. And it's not too bad. It is little bit of a gap here, a bit down here. So progesterone is a bit of playing around with, and this one's actually, if you, when you look, when you look at the face award, you look down along edge with eye level or showing you sorry, I level and that's fairly strike. And if I put it are applying. You can see that. It's fun to that at all. Ok. So I'll just find that a bit more and then it's ready for joy. Not look too bad actually for the joint. Some scarring together. If you died, haven't electric sander. And you plan to claim this, It's really important that you make sure that the grain in each place award is running in the same direction. And I've shown that before. But to do that, you simply plying the top a little bit. And if it's, if it's smooth, it means you're running the right, right direction. So the grain is like that. So if you are planning along with the grain, it will smooth off. If you're going the wrong way, it chips up and you're not serve you make sure all the grain is going in the right direction. One direction, then there'll be a lot easier for planning. Alright? So are there the rest and then I'll come back to you. I'm now just one more thing. When you're planning someone's applying goes appeared at an angle. So every now and again, check with the square and make sure that you're even. And in this case, I'm not sure. So as you can see, but it's actually up of it. So there's a bit of a gap there. So I never planned it. That way a bit. Okay. Ten Lola, general Jolanta, When looks yo yo really large. Well written. And I'm going to clamp them on with blue, again called a winding joint. And I'll show you how the clamps work. We'll put it together with labored over, not gonna drink, lived over night, come back and see what it looks like. This is what our show you. Okay, so you can see what I've done here. I've got the clamps already and my work paste here. What I intended to do is to glue eight sections, just one side of the board. And I'll just do one or two and show you. It's really not rocket science, but let's just say it's just a matter of putting them as blue down too much there. So I can put Among the next day and the next one as well because I'm quite too much. So they spread it out with your finger so that it covers every every little aspect and takes him off because it's bit excess there. She match rarely that can go on that one. Now, when you are ready to join, put the two together. So that's the side and that's the side. And you, what you do is you wrap them smooth. It's called rubbing plane joints, so you don't like that to get all the air out. Okay. Now, I'm going to do the research and then I'll come back q, k, all the joints are nouns glued as you say. So what I have to do is just prod each one together like flat to get out of the air in the twain. And that one. And run them up and down a bit. Why that Louis settlers in. Now, next you need to do, I think it's a good idea, is to put your square into place, song as AD. So good idea is to get the square in place and square up all your boards before you set it into one's place on all nice and square. And that's ready to go. I have my packing boards don't hurt the job. And now this is the tricky bit. What i scarce you, it's just tightened up just a fraction to mine just so that they in place. And I'll explain in a minute. The problem is if you keep pushing, it's carried on top, which is really annoying. So what I suggest you do is put pieces of wood across migrant VAT and one underneath. And then with it was the clamp plan, your place. It's not a bad idea to actually put a little bit of paper or masking under the word because as you see, it's kind of goal itself on basically go like that. Now that's not, not too bad. I think you put that plan in place. Tighten that down. That will stop a guy and pop. And I'll put another one. This end is well, okay. Okay. Now I've got both, both ends now, secure. And I'm just going to tighten list as much as I can to try and get out gaps. Courts. Nor easy to get it without gaps. But it can be done. So you can see that the glucose coming up. Now, I should mention, and I should've mentioned before, it's not necessary to have all the boards level at this stage, you can have boards which you've been uneven because when they're still done, you're going send it and playing it down to the size that you want. Now, what I've got ready to leave and all nice and tight. Your client slightly in, not right at the end. Okay. I've criticized now. Time for lunch and I'll leave this talk tomorrow morning. And then I'll come back to the next section. 5. Session Five Smoothing the surface: Good morning. Everybody will overnight. The Mireille cutting board has hair Saturn, and it's ready fresh look at what we've got. So this is outlooks this morning. They, The important thing is to undo these ones first, before you undo those because quite thin it's still my pop up and then meditate days off. As you say exactly what I said yesterday, this is now bit stats are red tape dies off. With pipeline relates, it's much easier to get off salad now, it's a matter of cleaning up a chop. You'd, you'd say that the feet are uneven. And there's a couple of ways of doing that of course, one is del fascia with applying and sandpaper. If you don't have an electric sander, that's for awhile ago, works very well. It's olfaction. What I've done is I've secured the word into place. So it's quite solid because it's a bit uneven. When you're planing. It are a bad idea to go crosswise foster award until it's smooth and then go with the order. You remember I mentioned before. You can have straight grain would try and get all going in the same direction. In this case, it's a bit cranky crane circa Adelbert. Again, get the plane. In insight and a bit of paraffin wax. You look down the end, standard tops since the blade is straight, and then give it a try. And i'm going to do a little bit show you. But that's actually working very nicely. That's come up smooth already. And I just need to work my way across until I get a nice even finish. Alright, let's do some more work and then I'll get back to you. I've taken off all that, all the really rough bits. As you can see, it's pretty, still, pretty uneven. But if it's getting a little bit more planning now causes demag of sanding it. You can do it by hand. If you don't have electric sander. If you do not have any electric Sander lectures such as this one, which I've how to use electric sander in one of my previous session, so I won't do that today. It's quite tiring doing ten and doing planning course with an issue, start with very coarse sand habit if it's still rough and then work your way up. That's 40 or 40, maybe 120. And then right up to the 3-20 keys, that sort of thing. The smooth as you want, you really, you don't need electric Shanda. Yes. We know Sand Tiger Woods is a choke justice. Well, sorry Now I'm going to do some sanding. This is probably a good time to fill out a few few house that you may have. I'm going to use base wax because my theories, it's got to be precise as it's made by days. Now it's just a matter of taking bidder. How did the Bayes wakes, pushing it into the hole like that, and just scraping it off. You can use a knife just to go with the grain. High-fat, issues it off. And then when, when it sanded over, of course, the whole will, will, will sort of brain in quite nicely. And these lectures are lovely. Smell sat, nice. Push that across. And that's how you fill the holes. Alright? Alright, that's come up quite IK I've just gone to the 1-20. What I'm trying to do is to the very fine stuff later on. Now, I've noticed here that I didn't join it terribly well as bit of a crack there. And another way of filling houses, just the old-fashioned way, which is so simple, is going a bit of glue, cover the whole light like that. And then sand over. Kieran, obviously it was there. So that works well. And now we'll constantly evaluate their own work. You'll notice here that I didn't join it terribly well. I think what happened is de awards that remember I said the planners to be absolutely Square. And I may have tilted it a little bit. That such a shame, but it's called being human will make mistakes. So after that we had a bit of glue and standard in a minute. There's a gap here, but that shouldn't matter because I'm going to cut, cut that section off anyway. And so that's going to be ready for working. The next thing that we need to do. To square off the end. Remember I said that, you know better to get it level. We'll even when I tried to, I coordinate, you can see that there's a guest there. The trick there is, is quite simple. You simply draw a line here and cut it off. I suggest you come in a little bit. If you go too close to the edge, really, really hard to saw it off. I would do that with a fairly fine so maybe a tenants saw I know, such as this one, find glide. I know it's kinda take longer. But if you use a group saw, it will literary refresh and destroy the edges. So I'll do that. And then I'll come back to you. Well, that's actually coming up quite well with another light sandy would look like, Hey, you may decide to stop at that point I made a lot of them. Cutting boards are just like this. If you wanted to put a hole in it so that you can hang it up. The really important part, and I mentioned before is to put a backing piece underneath that and clamp it tightly. Could either be an advice or just a couple of clamps. And then and then drill drill through. And let me show you the same. Then you can draw through the probabilities. If you don't do that. When the drill gets here, it's kind of split it and you're gonna burst into tears. It's horrible. But if you have a place clamped on there, it'll go on to that second piece and it should be a clear cut. You can't go halfway and then the other wire doesn't really work very well. Alright, now I'm going to do something different and I'll show you in a minute. Good morning. Everybody will overnight. Maital cutting board had her surgery and it's pretty fresh. Look at what we've got. 6. Session six Drawing the Curves: Well, that's pretty satisfactory. I've got to say we've now got, got the word together. It's look nice. In this session, I saw my pretty up, I sleep. Put a handle in there. Maybe. Mandy ages. Again, big creative Gun. Can't follow my instructions and exciting. And remember, it has to be your partner, has to be something that you write your own new johnson. Yeah, I made this. I didn't follow what Panofsky said. I did my own thing, good for you. So you think now what I want to do is make the top a bit more interesting. So I plan to put a shape here all the way around and all that. And I hand a hole here. And that will consist of drilling a hole with this fit both here. And then what I would do is counted out the shape. So I've cut out a cardboard template and I can put it into place and market around like that. And then turn it to the side. Now, I my various adequate play with it where I get going. And they hold her hand will be something like this. Be around round. And I may go up or I may just go straight along like that. Just just so you can put your hand in it. The reason I want to do that is so that I can show you how to use, how to do the cutting and drilling, Alright, and I'll do that in a minute. So you can see I've put that point exactly where I want the whole soft measured downwards and across words. I'd suggest probably that you start with the drill honest slow speed. So just put too much strain on the drill. Notice that I put I put a piece of rough Lord unrelated and say it there and secured so that when the drill goes through, hopefully it will split. So I put it into here, push down an offering. Carson does forbid. Now, the reason I turned and dropped high speed wise, this is actually Pine and quite soft. Let's take these off to bed actually. Now you see you on the other side. It's come through it a little bit of a split there. But that's okay. We can send that off. And now I'm going to cut across there and across there and shape that. And I'll show you how to let after I've had some morning tea. So I'll see you in a little while. 7. Session seven Cutting the Curves: I'm going to show you how to count code. So we're using two instruments. One is electric jigsaw, it's a handheld electric jigsaw. Horrible things. But her work. And the second one is with regard to fashion, what I call frictional. And then lovely. When interested, it just seemed like kids things but work. Again, it's all handled. And we'll give you some techniques for lots more projects. Now, what I want to do now two things. One is cut across here to make the handle and cut around here. Now there are two ways to do that. And I'm going to show you both. One is good old fashioned coping saw, which I'll show you how you interact with it. The second one is to use another jigsaw. Now I have to tell you, a jigsaw is my least favorite tool. I just find them pretty handily rarely. But they do the job. And what I'm gonna do now is give you a bit of a rundown on how their work and how to use them. Now this one is a plugging, and I would imagine today you buy them with batteries, but the principle will be the same. So let's look at that now. Let's start by giving a rundown of the machine. Now you know my rule, if you're going to buy one of these things by a good one, don't buy cheap ones that bad for the environment, and they just end up in, end in tears. They're basically saying this is a speed control. If you're not yet sure about using them, maybe start on slow. You say you do that for different jobs? It's an on-off. Obviously there that button holds it on if you're doing long jobs. List, does one explain that because different machine. Now you can see here that the platform can actually be adjusted to an angle, which is really useful because then you can cut, cut at an angle. The other thing which is quite useful, you can buy book platform tables for thems have they sit like this table over here and that, and that shuts out the top. And then you can steer your work into that. They're really useful because they're safe or safer than holier. I, that's how I think they're pretty dangerous tools, quite frankly. So be very careful. Now you see here, I've secured the work, so I don't have to hold it in any way. My advice is that you hold it with both hands. And that way you're going to end up with ten fingers instead of nine. If you have to hold the work itself. Well, obviously you need to make comments centrally that, that, that, that you keep your hand behind the machine or right. Other than that, let's make the stuff. Oh, sorry. You should understand. There are, it is actually quite a useful tool. Now you can't see this, but it will cut metal. So this is a, this is a metal blade and different fine. So this is a finite blade. This is a very narrow blade. So if you're doing really little, little curves and this is really rough and raise, so that'll cut through it. Fairly sick stuff. I'm not saying don't get what I'm saying. So it does the job but doesn't give me a lot of pleasure. Alright, now I'm gonna switch it on and I'm actually sorry. I'm going to use this fine blade for this job because I don't want it to rip. So in this case, I've got, as you can see, a pretty vicious looking blade. And we're gonna take that out. And I don't need to show you how to do that because they are pretty different with every with every one, with this one, I have to do it with an allen key. It'll it'll vary on the one that you've got. So order that and then I'll get back to you. All right. Now, it's plugged in, ready to go there or just wanted to show you. I mentioned the speed. So if I push that on that fairly fast and it can go down to quite slow. So if you're not sure, maybe start on slide. I'll go up a bit. What I'm going to do is cut, cut this one out here and cut around some very cat one that I'm one of those and get the other ones with fresh sorted shy you for ij. So let's see how we get on. You can see what I've done. I've cut 1-bit off here. It went quite smoothly. I've gotta say tos sub two rough under here. And I can just drop it in and going on there. I mean, it's okay to use. It's just not very satisfying. Now I'm going to show you the old-fashioned way which is using a coping saw Change. Asi works well. Just takes a bit longer. That's all. So what I want to do is cut along here with a with a coping saw. Yeah. I think I've shown you this before, but they're great little tools, cheapest anything. And, and they've been around for centuries basically in one way or another. So that's matter, unscrew that. Taking out the blade comes out, putting it through the hole. That Qazi because all my fingers. You see that? And then matter pushing them back in place. It seems never to go right when people have watched here are tight. And then tightening it up. Say where I'm doing. Tiny dot like that. And I have had to get them fairly straight otherwise the blade will break. Now in this case, I need to go long, so I'm going to move to play it up a bit like that, like short straight there and tighten it up. So there's no twist into the blade. That's quite nice. But really all paraffin wax. Candle. Put that on there. And, and away we go. Well that went quite easily really and the bit comes out from the middle. And there you have your handle. And of course you simply unscrew this. Things. If you kind of do suggest useful tools, don't use them very often. Gosh, they only when you do come out and they have it. So the next part is simply cutting down here. Starting can be quite difficult, so you need to sort of go down a little bit and then start to move along. You can say that it does move around a bit. So caking is make sure you lead the line on because you can always send it back. Just a matter of concentrating. And am working y-hat down gives you plenty of exercise. Safely cranky as a chin cared scan. And I said, yeah, OK. Now it's matter of cleaning up. And I'll show you how to do that in a minute. 8. Session Eight Final Finish: Well, I hope you enjoyed that lullabies, fame, sort of nice feeling has no r. Now in this session it's a matter of making it look good, finishing off, working around the edges. Sanded down, nice and nice, and then slopping lots of good old-fashioned olive oil on it or vegetable. Ignore anything that nicely won't kill you. Compute. And then you can, good to your loved one or you don't go every time. Where I might get some brownie points. Assuming that looks like. Now it's just a matter of cleaning up the edges. Fear it's wise to do it. Simplest way of course is just ten pipeline. And that gets quite a nice finish. Or if you want to go a bit further, you can do it with a plane, but went along with that up a bit. But the important thing is if you're playing it go up at an upwards when it's on the end, grain size like that. And that gives a really nice finish. And then of course, just a little bit of sandpaper and we'll do the fine sand paper in a minute. That same goes for the other edges. Just a matter of doing the same thing along here. But because I'm going with the grain, I can go downwards, NOT outputs. That's actually not working well because it's pretty cranky growing there. I may call it the other way. See what happens. Let's take that out. Sandwiches side. That's quite nice. And then say I'm moving the sandpaper around like that. And I don't I know I'm not very good with filming and things, but I'm sure you get the idea right. Now. I'm going to do in this case, start with, with a plane, which is quite easy, but you've gotta go upwards. If I go down there, it's kinda chip, right? So what I need to do is to plain upward type is chopping around a bit, but it's taking it off. So I think I've probably got too much blade. So that's one way they do it. Another way is using a file, the old-fashion files, that you can buy a pretty good idea to try and get good ones, but they're hard to come back and tell you. Now. That's just a matter of one hand here. One hand they're filing button type medulla secretes a camera. So it's coming up. It's coming up reasonably well. Same goes for here. As you can say, it's pretty jagged. So this can take quite a bit of work. And again, probably I'll do it with a file. It's just good old-fashioned, hard work to file it down. So I'll have a God that and then I'll come back to you after a little more. Now, I was finding the file too slow, too small. So this is called a Ras, which as you say, Pretty much more brutal. This is an all ones had spit blind. But if you watch it, it will actually work. Say I'd taken them, tell you door fairly quickly, each rough, of course. So when you get to a certain point, then go back to the file and then go back to sandpaper. Alright, so do some and then I'll come back to you. So now I've used the Ross right down. So it's reasonably level and that's a matter of using of a file, which is fine. And finishing it off. Taken away a lot of the scratch wheat from the, from the right. And now of course it's back to the old-fashion sandpaper, putting it in its way around and just giving it. Good. All right. Nothing too complicated about that. Right now that's being done. I would I need to do now is is softened the edges. And the way you do that, I've got a file which is rounded and that will allow me to soften that edge and then turn it flat. Bit of sandpaper. And that's looking pretty good. Now, I'm just going to do a little bit more and then we'll finish it off with fine sandpaper. Well, we're almost done. I've sanded down with very fine sandpaper. Just, just make it as smooth as you want. But of course, memories, a cutting board. So it's gonna get pretty rough off for a while now.
