Hello, I'm Shanan Subhan, an Artist currently residing in Bangalore. I am a software engineer turned Artist.

Nature/landscapes are among my favorite subjects to paint. I thank nature and great photographs for inspiring and challenging me.

I started coloring at an early age, even before school taught me to read and write. Unaware of art and the theory of colors, I loved scribbling on papers, books, and walls! All I felt was colorful walls are merrier than monotonous ones.

Although I loved painting and coloring, because of studies and the competitiveness of day-to-day life, I somehow got disconnected from art a few years ago, but I always felt that emptiness in life. Back in the end of 2017, I felt the need to fill this gap so I gifted myself a basic... See full profile

1. Introduction to Winter Landscapes: Hi everyone. I hope you are doing good. The windows, Iowa. And I have come up with a new class on paintings, snowy landscapes. I'm Shannon, a watercolor is from India. You can check out my skull shape profile to know more about me. Paintings can get tricky. With watercolors. You don't apply any white beans. But Brissot, the white areas of the paper to achieve will white noise effect. This class is all about paintings known complementing it with beautiful elements of nature. So make yourself available and be ready to dive into this class, DIYbio brushes. And let's create something magical. 2. Materials required: Welcome to my class. I'm glad you joined in. Ok, so the materials that we would need for this class are what color paper? A 100% cotton paper of 300 GSM, almost. I'm using for 40 GSM textured paper. As you can see, this is very picky. You can go window any watercolor paper that is available with you. Make sure it has a 100% cotton and at least 200 GSM. Talking about brushes, we have four brushes. Among brush for the washes. Round brush of size eight. Another round brush with pointed tip. This is again ties eat. I'm using this because this has appointed IP. Then I'd go brush for fine details. Next day would mean a cardboard who came down the paper from all the sides using a masking tape. So he ought I have what the colors from various banks stored in this airtight container. On the left side we have all these commonly used colors. And on the right side I have stored some real colors. This can be used as ballad for mixing colors as well. Next, we will use a ceramic violet for mixing colors. Because though airtight container gets dirty at time, so I prefer having a ceramic palette by MyType. Then a data of what? A napkin for wiping extra kalos and water from the brush. Then next is whitewash. So this one is optional. You can go with wide gorge or whitewater color as well. But having gosh beans would be really helpful when you're painting window or snowy landscapes. Lastly, we would need a pencil for our sketching. That's all about materials. Let us jump into our class projects. 3. Project 1 - Cabins and Reflection Winterscape: Welcome to vendor landscape project one of this class. Today we will learn to paint this static window painting. Alright, let us get started. So I have Dave down the people using masking tape. Just make sure that you're tightly feel it. Now we will sketch the outline. I will start by drawing those straight lines in the middle of the paper. And then I will draw that tiny houses. So initially I will draw the basic shapes. Then you can lighten the pencil marks using annealing. It is. Since we are painting of winter landscape, the houses will not be straight as it will be covered with snow. So I am going to have some irregular shapes about this area. We will draw the mountains. So yeah, that's all about sketching. Let us start our painting now. So first, I'm going to weight the area above the mountains to paint the sky. So I will use my mob brash, which holds what amount of water? I'll be following by ton met technique to paint the sky. So I load my brush with indigo color and apply it on the sky. Here I'm using very pigmented colors to get a bright and vibrant sky. Apply the paints in diagonal motion to create a nice flow in the sky. Here, I'm mixing it with pins grade to create a darker shade of indigo. When we launched them on dense, I will be applying clean water only on some areas and applied diluted themes to create snowy effect on the mountain. So this way, I am retaining some white areas. Also, I will call the pains from this guy to the mountain area by gently applying water. So if you observe carefully the colors are bleeding inside from the sky through the water part that I have applied. This will give us a nice natural effect on the Mount and leave some area for painting the pine trees in the bottom. So, so URM leaving whitespace below the mountains and about houses. Now I will leave some colors from the sky using a damn brush. If your paper as a guide, auditors semi dry, then please avoid this step. Okay, so we will paint the pine trees. No, I'm going to use clean water and apply it on this area. Switching to my mob brush to apply what I'm doing with wet on wet technique again, I'm going to apply what her on the houses as well because I will be controlling the flow of calories into the houses. If you want, you can only apply water outside the houses. Oh, I'm mixing Sap Green with pins. It gives me a nice cool dark green to pin this. So I will start applying darker green color. You can pick a cool and darker green for this part because in winters we don't get much sunlight. So the oneness will be comparatively less. I have been gender initial layer with the diluted color. And then for the next layer, I will be applying onto injected colors. So I will be mixing paint, agree. Little bit of black and Sap Green procreate or achieve a darker green color. If color spread inside the houses, you can remove it with a tissue paper or just push it using a finger. At this point of time, you don't have to worry about creating the shape of the binaries. Just randomly apply pinched though, sort of complete this area, but don't completely fill the area with green color, leaves him whitespaces here and there. You can gradually start creating the tip-off to pine trees on this Tampa area. The idea is to have a nice bushy forest behind houses. So I'm going to achieve that by painting pine trees in dopa entries in different sizes. Keeps, some of them are short and some of them taller in trace. Now I'm going to pin a buffer trees using our final big brush. And hopefully been the tiny details on that, a pasta. Find trees. I have used car darker colored to give a nice contrast. In the bottom area of the trees, we are going to be in this extra dark alert to create some depth and dimension. Pined for address looks bushy enough. So we have a mind to paint houses. In the first step for being, being the houses is to paint the light. So we'll go with orange color. Always remember, it is easier to paint from lighter to darker colors in water colors. So I'm going with orange now. And then we will paint the brown color for wooden walls. Okay, we will apply orange in the shape of small rectangular boxes. Once we have applied the pins, we would let this dry. Because if we apply beams on the audience area, it is going to spread easily. Still will let it dry and then come back and paint it again. I'll write the polos have dried now. So we will take wants Yana and mix it with this orange color. And let us take this mixture and apply it outside the orange area. So I'm creating squared shaped windows. So this is basically painting outside the focused area. My focus your is to preserve the light. So I am bringing it outside the orange region. This is to create an impression of light coming out of the windows. And we're going to be in rest of the area with brown color. You can create any shapes for the Windows, so-called square rectangle, any shear. We have many houses here. So we will bended one-by-one. Do not rush the process. Painted neatly and carefully in the shape of the Windows. I'm going to leave the white areas on the roof as it is. This will be depicted as the snow on the houses. Okay. Ok. Right. Okay. White paints as well for the snow. Okay, we're done building their houses for now. Let us mourn poet. Next step. Now, I will take my pencil and draw the second line that we had drawn earlier and extended a little bit. For this area will be for the next, we will move on and beam the deflection of the houses in the water. I'm going to apply orange color below the area that I have monk. Next I will apply brown colored. The idea is to have this lecture of the houses on water. And that's why I'm applying brown and orange. Apply darker ground color around the orange areas. When there are ripples in the water, the deflection will be distorted. Hence, you need not have a perfect reflection. Next I will paint darker green colour, depicts the reflection of pine trees. We need to manage this winter, learn with the existing brown light, we have fainted. So make sure you blend of kalos really well. I'm going to leave the white area as it is, because this family depicted as the snow below this area, it will apply green color. And to have the deflection of pine trees. I will apply another layer of darker green color. Now, take my brush and apply clean water below this green area so that the colors flow down nicely. Next, I will leave some white space for the reflection of mom. And it's because Adam on dense are white in color. So leaving the space for mountains, we will paint the reflection of the sky using indigo color, a damn brush, and for the blue paint into this white area to create a similar effect as optimal. And k is the cardboard in a deleted position so that the Fellows flow down and you don't get any blooms in the paper. Again, I will apply some indigo color on the reflection of the sky. Now, I will take a damn brush and pull the green panes down to create a nice AND flowy effect between the trees and the mountains. Next, I will take a damn brush and pick small amount of orange color. Premium. Mario Bros should not have too much water in it. And I will perform the same exercise of pulling the paint down. I am applying a load on the middle area to depict the light in the Reflection. Next, I will take some dilute turn blue applied on this snowy area. I will apply some weight in the reflection area, though depicted roofs of the houses. So as I said, it need not be perfect. Next, I will take some darker green colored and tried to create the shape of the pine trees in the reflection. Apply some darker color on the outlines of this nor why darker because this area is touching the ground level, so it will remain darker in color. When compared to other places. I am running my brush over the beans in word pickles, brush strokes so that I can create a pine tree effect in the water. Now, it's time to add some details on the houses. So I will take darker brown color and apply the pins on the houses. They'll give them outlines and nice details. I'm applying some doubt campaigns to create some dimension in the houses. Now I will apply some white color on the roof to depict some rights. No. I will also apply by color in the reflection part. You can completely avoid adding though the deflection of the snow will, because at this point of time the people who are my dry. So apply the paint only if your paper is damn automatic. Otherwise, you can completely skip this. Next, I will take white color and paint the ripples in the water. So you're going to pick the white beans. I draw these dotted lines on the water. Turn the peg, the repulse. Next I will take very dark brown color. You can take black color, SVM outlines what the houses. This will give a nice dimension to the houses. We will create some dimension in the snow. So I'm going to apply this darker color and then blend it with water. Right? We are done with the spin, Inc.. Now, let us remove the masking tape. So this is the final look of the painting. I hope you enjoyed watching this. Let us move on to our next class project. 4. Project 2 - Sunset Winterscape: Welcome to winter landscapes project two of this class. Let us begin with Fenton sketching a small potion for the snow in the middle left area of the paper. Then we will draw these small Zhang thinkers for snow. The area outside these figures will be for the LIT. That is it for sketching. We will add the further elements as we begin. Let us get started with painting. First, we will apply what bird on the upper half of the paper. Make sure you don't apply water below this line. We need to keep this quiet and prevented from painting. If you have applied more water than you can, make a damn brush left all the water from the paper. And by producing a towel, switching to my size eight round brush. Next we would need a low and warm Bush LO. I'll mix them together and apply in upper or vertical brush strokes in the shape of trees. Gently apply some pressure and tried to create the shape of trees. Then we will take some burnt sienna and dab it on the and low part. Applying the pinch, married randomly on this ALU NEO and trying to create some variation in the followers. So I will add some purple as well at random places. So the colors are blooming loyally. Next in the bottom part of these blooms, I will apply black color to create some dimension and give it a shadow effect. We will be in the sky. So we will take small amount of Reagan Bush, a low end diluted form, and apply it on the top part of the paper with the horizontal brush strokes. You can leave some weight gap between the trees and the sky. Also, I'm applying color to create a beautiful soft k. So then your performing this exercise makes sure that the paper is still wet. Next, we will be in the trees on the right side of the paper. So we will read the paper focused on this idea that I'm leaving some blank spaces for snow. So we'll Gamboa low and apply on this wet area. Since the area is, the colors will start spreading very easily. I have left this white area to depict the snow. Towards the bottom of this yellow region, we will apply some brown color that is one-channel, depict some shadows and dimension. Now, I didn't want on both. This will create a darker look in those forests that I'm trying to create. So this particular section is going to be the base layer for the trees. All right, moving on, we've been the leak. So you will first apply clean water on the paper using a more Brush. Remember, you need to leave this white, blank areas for snow and not apply water inside this. If you don't get control with mob brush, then you can switch to a smaller brush. Leave some blank spaces for the snow in the bottom part as well. Now the paper is wet, so you will apply burned on board. Starting from the point where we had resolved the ADR for snow, apply the paint on the wet area. This is the base layer. We're going to have multiple layers on the lake. So be ready for tact. As you are closer to the foreground, we will apply Rossi. And so this looks a bit of orange in color. If you don't have this particular color, then you can mix orange with going Dumbo. E, wide gaps wherever necessary, and do not paint inside that area. And applying another quote of same colors on the list to make it a vibrant impeller. Since we are painting with veteran wet technique, we have achieved a soft blending carefully paint outside the snowy area. Alright, so we are done when painting the first layer of the liquid. We will come back to this once it dries. So now let us begin the trees in the background. So we have painted background for the trees in the trunk and the branches. Aco find the brush for painting thin ventures. So my branch has appointed tape, so I will use this Russia Pic black or very dark brown color to paint the trees. Draw the trunk and then when the branches, branches in different direction. Next I will take this theme. Now ground color in diluted form and apply below this new area. This will create some depth and also add some volume to do snow. Going back to the trees, I will paint more tiny trees. You're on there to give an appearance of a bushy forest. Next, we will paint the outline for the snowy rocks. These are basically rocks covered with snow. I'm just applying small dash of spins in the bottom part of this MOOC. Moving ahead, we will paint a tree trunk in the foreground. So you are going to take our darker brown colored and start painting the trunk of the trees and then i d branches. Paint as many chunks as you want. I'm going to paint many trees to make it look for law. And so at some areas you have to leave some space for this node. Leaving the space for the snow. And then we will pin the grasses and small tiny plants yarn that. Next we will paint ranchers in various directions to give a dense and fuller look. Use that people feel brush to paint Tim branches. If you want to have a detailed knowledge on painting trees, then I have a class for you where I teach more than 50 types of trees and have shared various tips and tricks to paint the trees in easy ways. You can check out that class in my skin shared profile. Next we will pay him the might be area using one Tiana. So you're trying to create a slopey riverbank. And I'm gently trying to slide my brush to create a kind of dry brush effect. Along with bungee and nomial also apply some gumbo. Okay, so the trees look incomplete. My idea was initially papain, oh, bushy forest. So in order to achieve that, I'm going to paint more tree trunks and benches in this area so that it looks for low, dense. I'm going to paint some used by dabbing the brush gently with brown color. Didn't you can add some colossal leaves as well for maybe Adi, enjoy look pink or something like that. Moving on, we will paint some dimension in the snowy area. So you don't have to apply watch band just to play clean water and then just a small amount of paint there. So I am applying diluted brown color. Next time we'll take some darker brown color and paint some tiny shrubs and grasses on this slope, area. Switching to slightly darker colored. You can even use black and paint grasses randomly. That is, no fixed place ISS to vendor to your, are there. Moving on? We will add some dimension to the snow in the foreground. So we'll apply clean water and then apply diluted beams. Extremal tried to create some texture on the lake water. So we will go with dry brush technique. That is, we will be taking a very dam grass and loading it with small amount of color. Gently apply the paint in sliding motion to achieve X gd affect the color that I'm using for dry brush is burnt umber. I'm gently sliding my brush on the lake water to create mildly pull extra. Next, I'm going to add some volume to the leaves by applying some diluted going downward on the leaves. Moving on, we will paint some tiny birds in the sky. You can go with Docker, brown or black colour to being doubles. I have a detailed class on being inverse. So you can have a look at that link for the class in the description below. Next, we are going to apply another layer of spins to make those leak vibrant and make it more dimensional. Load your brush with the pains and apply it below the snowy area. Same rule was you are as well. Do not apply the pins inside the white areas. Leave it as it is, and just apply the beans outside the white EDS. Apply bones here not at the top part of the lake, and then blend it well with water. And the bottom parts of the snow Iraq's to achieve a shadow effect. Some black color, and apply it on the starting point of the leak to create a nice depth effect. And apply the theme on tiny rocks as well. Next, we are going to take quite watercolor, or you can even use while it goes. Low audio graduate beams and gently tap on the brush to get a nice sprinkle effect on the trees. I'm also applying white beans on the snowy rocks and also on the slopey area of the riverbank. Trying to create nice effect. You are in there and make it look naturally. And I have some white beans on the leaves as well. Make sure that consistency of white-collar is ticked. If it is diluted on medium 20th century, you wouldn't get the white effect. Let us remove the masking. It revealed the final look of the beam. Okay, he ordered these, please bear with me. I'll add some modes by applying white color. Since it has been done. And we want painting to look beautiful. So we're going to add some more snow. He already dead. Just grab some white beans. Divert using your brush. I'm going to paint some tiny snowfall your under. Preserving whitespaces for this no, is a better option. But if you are not able to achieve that, then you can apply white pinch. Once you're done painting, make sure that the colors are thick enough. Or you can even use a masking fluid to preserve white areas. We have not used masking fluid here. So we are done. I hope you enjoyed being in this window. Let us move on to our next chapter and paint a new window landscape. Thank you. 5. Project 3 - Countryside Winterscape: Welcome to project number three of winter landscapes. This will be a very simple, yet beautiful painting that we will learn today. In this project, there is no much sketching required. You need to just draw horizon line in the center of the papal. Moving on to painting process, we will first apply clean water about this horizon line. For veteran wet method. Apply even coat of water. And if there is extra water, you can wipe it with our tissue paper. In the uppermost part of the paper, we will apply Compiled Law to depict the sky. The paints are in medium consistency. I'm applying the beams in horizontal brush strokes, as you can see. I'm painting it with very light color. As we go down. Next, we will make orange and Rosemary. To create a nice rose pink color. For this mixture, I will add a bit of white to make it a pistol sheet. Now we will apply this mixture about the horizon line in the shape of trees. So these are basically going to be the background trees. You need not have to worry about making perfect shapes. You just move your brush in crisscross motion. In the left part of the paper. Maybe leave some white spaces for the tiny houses. So you only been snowy roofs of the houses. So leave this white area or you can even lift up beans using tissue paper. Next we will apply Indigo, kind of overlapping on this pink area in the shape of trees. Again. Carefully apply pains in the shape of trees and trying to create pine trees. So here again, we are leaving space for houses. Next we will use pointy or not to pin the ordering all of the houses, themes in the shape of houses. These are very tiny houses. So I am going to be in three to four of them in different shapes. The light color your depicts the snow on the roof of the house. This. So we will leave it as it is. As we can see, the houses have turned out pretty good. Moving on, we will paint layer of trees. So I will take him, the goal's been decrease next to each other. I'm painting the pine trees of the frame sizes. So you can first draw a straight line and then add the branches in zigzag motion. Tied to keep it irregular. Don't make it symmetrical and look a little weird. Makes so many draw some lines. Neon this idea to create an illusion of partitions in the snow. And going back to painting trees. So I will cover this area by painting trees. Next, I will draw a slant line within the group and apply what are below that so that the Palo spread very well. For the second line, we will use another method. That is I will apply the water first in the shape of slant lines and then drop in some kalos. So you are, you can even go with previous method. This step was to create depth in the snow level, apply clean water in the foreground area. And then cobalt blue. Diluted form. Tiny grasses with Bush. We will take some white watercolor sprinkled from their dog to create snow in the air. We will mix this might collide with the L0 and spread it on the ground. So this way it really create a warm white color. Makes a darker brown colored by taking one town black color. Now with this, make sure I beamed tiny lines on the grasses to create some depth. I am using a fine line of Russia. Next we will paint a tree. So we will use a dark brown color. First, we will pay in the trunk of the tree slightly slanted position. And then I will add the branches in different direction. And keeping the branches irregular in shape. Once we are done painting tree, we can add some white color to depict this note. We will paint the outline for the houses using Docker brown color. So I'm going to paint the lines on the outlines and add some windows and doors. Lastly, we will add some smallest I need access in the foreground using brown color. You can even use some green or any darker color. You want. Some other gases here and there. You can make your own alterations in the spending is totally up to you because that's how we learn. Right? Let us remove the masking tape and reveal our final painting. Alright, there you go. This is finally being ink. Let us move on to our next class project. 6. Project 4 - A Walk Uphill Winterscape: Welcome to the fourth class project of winter landscapes. Let us begin with our pencil sketch. So I will start by drawing two slant lines from the either sides of the paper. And these lines are going to intersect at a point somewhere in the middle of the paper. And from here we will draw two diverging lines, which will be depicted as or a road covered with snow. Next we will draw the fence on one side of the road. So first we will draw some vertical straight lines and then connect them all together using horizontal lines. So here you need to understand the basic perspective or point of view. The object's closer to w point appears bigger and the ones that are far away will appear smaller in size. So you're in the friend, it looks bigger. And as it moves away from the viewpoint, the offense look smaller. Ok, that's all about sketching. Let us move on to our painting. So first we will wet the surface of the paper about these slant lines. We are going to apply even coat of water to make sure there are no puddles of water on the paper. We will first paint the sky by applying said Julian blue on top part. Apply the paint with horizontal brushstrokes. Next, we will be painting background trees. So we will start with purple color. Here. I'm gonna take my cardboard to help the colors flow in the opposite direction. Also, we will be applying different colors for the background. Next, we will apply whitewater color on this purple. That is totally optional if you don't have white watercolor. Next, we will apply a law next to this purply. Since these two are complimentary colors, mixing them will give us a more D-shaped, but that's okay. It is okay if we get a brown color. Tried to create spiky brush strokes to depict or three shapes. Next we will apply orange on the right side of the paper. On the left side, we will apply indigo color. Next we are going to apply Payne's gray over these colors. Try to make pine tree shapes by drawing zigzag lines. So in the background we have various trees of different polos. That is going to give you a nice contrast to our being. Next, we will paint some binaries with whitewater color. However, it's okay if you don't have white color, you can paint trees for darker color as well. Now, we will make slightly in detail shapes of trees. So remember in the paper should be done when you're performing this background exercise. Moving on, we will create some dimensions and shadows in the snowy area. So we will first apply water at random areas burned, apply Award or an entire region. Next, we will make speeds to apply it on this node. So I'm gonna take Coval blue and purple and mix it together. So this is how it looks when you mix. I will take it diluted form and apply on the wet area. When we apply beams on this wet area, the polos spread easily. And inside the wetted area and we get soft edges. The reason behind not applying paint on the entire area was to retain the white areas for snow. We will be creating dimensions on either side. So apply the beans on the right side as well with same procedure. Next we will apply the paints on the outlines where the snow touches the line. And also applying it on the pathway. Then we will apply some pins on dry white areas to create sharp edges. Moving on, we will mix are dark brown color. Noticed by mixing bunch Yana and black to apply it on defense, also the ground area. So we will apply this panes on the fence. Also applying this brown beans near the outline, where does no touches the ground. I'm applying some pains fund the pathway as well to create an illusion of our muddy selfies. Next, we will take them brush and apply dry indigo pins on white area to create this textured effect. We will continue painting the fence. So carefully paint inside the sketch area. All tried to create straight lines. I'm bending when darker brown color to create an illusion of wooden fence. The boys on the right-hand side of the paper. It will be in some details here and there to create some dimension. Next we will paint some details here and there to create some dimension and some effect in the fence and in the ground area. Once this layer is done, we will move on to add some details. And though background trees. So we will be in the trunk of the trees where Background ADM needs just No. So these trees are far away from the viewpoint, so they appear smaller. According to the rule of perspective. Moving one, we will paint some trees in the snowy area. So we will draw the trees next to each other. Starting with a straight trunk. And then adding branches in various directions. Tried to paint it as natural as possible by painting irregular branches. I'm adding tiny details here and there. So to create ten brush strokes, you have to apply less pleasure and dip after brush. And if you want to go brush strokes and you can apply more pressure on the tip of the brush. So that way you'll be able to manage the brush strokes. Let's single brush. So as you're painting the branches, you can focus it as many times as you want. Painting the branches facing towards the ground level. You can even painted in the upper direction. I will let you observe my light beam though trees with same techniques. As you can see, I'm trying to create a parallel pathway on the snow area. So this is to depict hydro create an illusion of the Make Color Traces that has passed from your eye will apply brown colored near the roots of the trees. All right, we are done with this painting. Thank you for watching my class. I hope you enjoyed bending the task projects. If you have been dead along with me, then please do share it with may end up projects calorie, or you can even share it with me on Instagram.
