1. Hello!: Hi, My name is Gabriella and I'm an illustrator. I remember when I first got my Wacom tablet. I was so happy that I'd finally be able to draw digitally like my favorite artists did. After watching hours and hours of studio vlogs reviews and speed paintings, I thought I'd crush it. But the truth is that after some hours of frustrated drawing attempts, shaky lines and many, many undos, I realized that drawing on a pen tablet was a huge challenge and was nothing like drawing on paper. Did I give up? Of course not! I practiced, practiced and practiced. And now I'm here to share with you the secrets and shortcuts that I learned throughout the years and that will help you create beautiful professional looking line work without any stress. So if you just bought your pen tablet and have no idea how to use it reason this. You've already spent some frustrating hours trying to get the hang of it. This course will help you to fall along the scores. All you need is a pan tablet likely welcoming to us and photo shop. If you don't have photo shop, don't worry. You can sign up for a seven day free trial on the adobe website. So what are you waiting for? Plug in your tablet and let's get started. 2. Materials: in this course, we're going to do a lot of exercise together to learn how to draw on a pen tablet. To follow along. This course you're gonna need, of course, a 10 tablet and a computer. I'm using the one by Welcome. This model is not available in all countries, though, but it's similar to the old model Wacom Bamboo. This was my first tablet, and it was the cheapest one I could find back then. You can use any tablet off any brand you like. Just keep in mind that this course was created with ban tablets in mind. Unlike Ben displays like the welcome C, T or tablet computers like the iPad Pro, the pen tablets have this black surface where we draw while the drawing is only displayed on their monitors cream, and that's what makes them sold tricky to use. I'm gonna be drawing in photo shop, but you can use any other digital banking softer that you're comfortable with. I created worksheets with all the exercises we're gonna be doing. You can download them in their project and resources top, so let your pen tablet into her computer and let's get started 3. Setup: way you position your tablet on your desk matters. When we tablets placed a agonal E, you can see that it's very hard for me to draw a straight horizontal line. But when my tablets placed parallel to my laptop growing straight line, it's so much easier if you're right handed. Align the right corner of your tablet with the corner of your laptop or your monitor screen . If you're left handed, align your tablet on the left corner of your monitor screen. You may be familiar with the concept off growing from a wrist or from my shoulder when you drop from your wrist. Onley arrest is moving while they're drawing, but when you draw from her shoulder, your wrist is a stiff and only our shoulders moving. The problem is that your wrist has a very limited range of motion compared to your elbow or shoulder, so we won't be able to create long smoove lines from your wrist. You can and should use your risks when you're growing very small and precise details, but you also need to be able to draw from your shoulder. Also, growing too much from a wrist can actually harm your wrists and hands. Most people place their tablet flat on the table, and there's nothing wrong with that. But you can notice that when my tablets laying flat, my arms kind of stuck on the table and has less mobility. So end up drawing only for my wrist but you. But if you want to draw long, smooth flying's, you need to be able to draw from your shoulder. A technique that will really help you draw from your shoulder is too inclined. Your pan tablet. The most expensive tablets already come with the possibility of inclining your device, but you can places mall object below your tablets to incline it or use the drawing board. In my case, I just use my growing table. But if you're using a table like mine, just be careful to not incline it too much and drop your laptop or your tablet. This is also more comfortable because your arm will be more relaxed and your posture will be better. Now let's do a warm up exercise to get too used to your new pen tablets set up and practices that throwing from your shoulder thing first downloaded the worksheet on the project and resources tab. Now let's open it in a folder shop by dragging its to the software quick and this I come here to creating you layer. Now press B work like in the brush icon to start to using your brush for this warm up exercise. Simply scramble for some time. Maybe for some of you. This is the first time ever using a band tablet in this case. Do your best to move your cells around and scribble something. Think about it as a paper and a pencil. We're gonna understand how the pen tablet works better into some very specific exercises later. But this is just a warm up. So do your best right to draw from her shoulder and get used to how your arm feels. When you do that, get used to the inclination of your tablet and the way it's positioned on your desk. This may seem silly at first, but it's excellent a nice exercise to loosen up your arm and hand without the pressure for creating a masterpiece. Drawing precise lines is very important, but it's not all being able to borrow loosely is a skill that all artists must develop when his first started studying gesture growing. It was so hard for me because I wanted to control every line. So my lines were very precise and had no movement. But if you're wrong is all about movement and rhythm. That's why simple, like easy exercises like this are so important. Okay, so let's move on to another lesson. 4. Hand-Eye Coordination: So let's start using our tablet. You probably already noticed that a tablet is very different from the mouse. Let's say you want to close your browser by clicking on the little wax in the rights period corner. If you're using a mouse, you'll simply drag it from where it is until the cursor reaches the X issue. Using your tablet, though, simply press with your Pam right on the superior corner off the tablet. I suggest you using your tablet as much as you can, um, blood your mouth and used your tablet instead in all your daily activities. This way, you'll get used to the public much faster. Also, your risk will thank you. I don't like using a mouse, because when I do my wrists always a start to hurt after some hours with my pan tablet. I don't have this problem because we draw on our pen tablet surface but are drawing on. Lee appears on their monitor screen, knowing exactly where to place our stylist Loaner tablet demands a lot of practice. How are you gonna do some exercises to practice this hand eye coordination and bastard? This is killed. So open your worksheet in photo shop. You can choose a brush by pressing B and going to these menu here choosy, hard rounded brush like this one that comes with any digital banking software. And the first thing we're going to do is to turn off the pressure sensitivity. So you say, draw a line. You can see that the size of my stroke for rice, like a real life brush. But for this exercise, I want my brush strokes to have a consistent size. So I'm gonna uncheck this box here. We're going to dive into pressure sensitivity later. This exercise is very simple, but it's not as easy as it seems. If were entirely new to draw me on the Penn Public, it's gonna be very challenged for you. Actually, in this first exercise, all you need to do is to trace these dotted and dashed lines. You can see the cursor of your stylist, so this should be your guide. It doesn't need to be perfect. You can see that I'm not doing it perfectly, but do your best. So I'm gonna decrease the size of my brush before they start raising the dashed lines. This exercise is very good at teaching you how to move in. Control your styles throughout your tablet. Okay? So keep tracing everything until you're finished. Now we're gonna increase the telling. I want you to create three thought ID lines and three dashed lines from scratch. That's right. There's no tracing guides at this time. Do your best to keep that. That's right beside each other and with a consistent spacing between them. Okay, now let's talk about pressure sensitivity. 5. Pressure Sensitivity: what if the most important things to getting to account when rolling? If a pan tablet is pressure, so pressure is very intuitive. If your press lighter on your tablet, you'll get a sinner stroke, and if you press harder, you'll get a bigger stroke. But mastering pressure demands some practice. If you're using you, welcome to you can change the pressure sensitivity by opening the welcome tablet properties . Employing with This is life here. I like this lights to be right in the middle, but you can test and see what you like best. I'm sorry that's this window is in Portuguese. I wasn't able to change the language, but er windows should look the same. And here's one related on the right side for you there other properties that you can play with if you want. But I usually left everything as it is also the property of awry. According to the model you're using. If you're using a tablet from a different brand, read it's manual or go to its website to see if you can adjust the pressure. Now we're going to do some exercises to help you master the pressure sensitivity. I've already opened up this work. She can photo shop and created a new layer. The first exercise is a story thes circles. You can choose Universal like I actually don't like this brush because of its hard edges. And it's like a texture. So I'm gonna choose a different one. I'm gonna choose a brush with some picture this time. Now all you need to do is to draw lines connecting the dots. Borane the pressure, the line according to the size of the dots. Don't worry if your lines not a straight for this exercise. The most important is to pay attention to the pressure variation. You're gonna drop very slowly to be able to control pressure better. And when we're drawing is lower, it's harder to get straight lines now. It's doing more illustrative exercise. Very personal. Find very fun. Let's give this tiger and the zebra some stripes throughout the stripes in any way. Like just remember to play with pressure variation. The goal is to greatly varies most stripe, avoiding abrupt changes in the pressure. I'm gonna draw very quick stripes on the zebra just to experiment with something different and to show you the difference between quick and low lines, quick line stone to be smoother and look better. So if your goal is to create a straight line, go with quick, confident strokes. Do this worksheet 123 times, or until you feel confident controlling the pressure on your styles. When you're ready, let's move on to the next lesson. 6. Tracing Exercise: Now we're going to do a tracing exercise. This is a simple as it sounds. We're just gonna trace these doodles for an extra challenge. Try to use a similar brush and replicate exactly the line quality and look of these drones . Racing other artists works is an awesome exercise. I used to do this all the time when I first got my tablet. Just be careful to not commit any copyright infringement. Tracing is purely an educational exercise, and you shouldn't post the results on social media as they're basically a copy from other artists. Work tracing is an opportunity not only to practice your line work but also to study and experiment with different art styles. These air only do those, but when you're tracing more complex illustrations, you should pay attention. Toe wet, brush their disused what kind of textures and patterns and try to emulate the same facts Near copy. Many artists like Beatrice Blue, for example, sell some of their PSD files so we can study in that analyze their workflow throughout failures in photo shop. Here's a tape on growing very straight lines drove fast, confident lines. If you're drawing slowly, your hands will be shaky and your lines will turn out wobbly. Also, don't worry if you don't get the perfect line it first. One of the biggest berks on drawing digitally is the possibility off undoing and the raising so you slat in your favor. You'll see me using these moving tool or stabilizer tool Many times during this exercise, you'll sign to this tool on the brush part. Properties at the superior bar, if is moving, is 0%. Your strokes will be totally Hendro. The higher the person that the more Photoshopped will is. Move your lines. If you're choosing number that is too high. Your strokes will be fares low in Laghi, and it's gonna be harder to control them. Also, your lines will be very artificial. So if you want a Hindu wrong hand wrong look, don't overuse thes moving tool. Play with the stool and see how it works for your art style. I'm gonna change this moving ah lot according toe the line from creating. - Now that we've finished this, let's move on to the TWI final exercise 7. Doodle Excercise: Now let's have some fun. Our final exercise is to create a small dildo patterns and textures. This will put into practice what we learned in all the previous exercises. You can use your imagination or even look for some inspirational interest. Just type doodle patterns on the search bar and have some fun. I'm gonna choose the same brochure used in the pressure sensitivity exercise I like. Think you feel of this brush? You can use this exercise to experiment with different brushes and see which ones you like best. I'm going to start by painting thoughts on this first cloud. I'm going to create the very loose spoke of that cloud with thoughts of different sizes and shapes. Oh, this is very cute. For the second cloud. I'm gonna drive small circles, not trying to do perfect circles because this sig doubling exercise, it's supposed to be lose and fun. You can undo in the race as many times as you want. Nobody's watching for my next cloud. I'm going to draw straight for tickle lines. I'm going to try to make them as a story it is possible while still keeping them organic. Keep in mind that If you wanted to create totally perfect straight lines, you could just use a guide Technologists here to make our lives easier in my next called I'm gonna change my brush and choose one with the pencil like picture These air my favorite brushes. I'm going to try something more messy this time with straight lines going in all directions and crossing each other. This is reminding me of mosaics on this one. I'm gonna draw some wavy lines. Very simple for this cloud. I'm going to create the herringbone pattern, so we start by growing the vertical straight lines. Then I add the diagonal lines for this cloud choosing different brush. It's another pencil like brush, and I'm gonna draw dashed lines of this cloud. Do you remember our first exercise? It's pretty much like it on this cloud. I'm gonna be more loose. I'm just going to scribble in circular shapes like we did in the warm up exercise. Now I'm going to go back to the first brush and used, and I'm going to create the zebra pattern. I'm going to play with the pressure variation. Congratulations. You've Richard to the end of the course. I encourage you to share your project with me in your classmates, I see all the projects and always gave feedback. If you have any question Phil for to ask me in the community tab, please leave a review so I can keep improving the next glasses. So what's next? You should have taken this course. You're probably interested in learning digital painting right Now that you're familiar with your rockem tablet. Go take my course in toward the beach Still painting a beginner's guide and start their journey on digital painting right now. 8. BONUS: Pen Tablet Hack: I better probably wondered, with all this technology, isn't there something that can help me create his move? Lines easier and faster, as a matter of fact, various. There are two later programs called Lazing Azumi, available in Windows and Hedges styles available in Mac OS. These programs integrate with photo shop and other digital painting Softwares and help you curate small Flynt's. They're both paid, but that's a little worth it. Now you're probably thinking, Hey, why didn't to tell me this before? Well, as greatest these programs are, you shouldn't be totally dependent on them. Being able to create his most lines on your own is an essential skill for every artist.
