About This Class

Tube Setting is a beautiful way of adding faceted round stones to your designs, with a lovely clean rim of silver framing a bright touch of colour - and if you follow the instructions in this class step-by-step you will find them easier than you might think!

As well as teaching you a new stone setting technique the class will also teach you more about pendant drills (or flexi shafts, depending on where in the world you are!) as I will be using one to both create the stone setting and to give it a beautifully smooth finish. Although pendant drills do make this technique a lot easier don't worry - it is possible to create tube settings without one and I will take you through that as well.

This class is longer than many of my video classes as I have covered technical information (complete with downloadable diagrams!) to make it easy for you to choose the right sized stones, tube and burrs. Future tube setting video classes will refer back to this information.

Although this video class takes you through everything you need for the stone setting, it doesn't cover all the details of how to the basic ring that they are set on to. This is already covered in the Simple Hammered Rings class however, and a link to that is below. I have also given a link to the Stone Set Rings class as you will find a recap of bezel setting useful for this class as well.

The Tube Set Stacking Rings class continues with series of Intermediate Silversmithing classes. As you progress through the series I will help you build on the skills covered in the Silversmithing for Beginners series, encouraging you to create more complex projects. I will always take you through everything you need step by step, and include troubleshooting sections where appropriate too. We will be covering soldering, various methods of stone setting, etching and more!

The Tube Set Stacking Rings were designed as part of the Ring A Month 2019 challenge. March's prompt was Colour. For more about the challenge visit www.facebook.com/groups/makearingamonth/

Teacher

I have been making jewellery for as long as I can remember, and have been passing these wonderful (and addctive!) skills on through my classes for nearly 20 years. I am self-taught and like many people I started with wire and beads. Learning how to solder, however, opened up a whole new world of jewellery making! There is something so magical about watching solder flow through a seam, joining two pieces of metal together smoothly.

My studio is in Southampton, on the South Coast of the UK. I design and make jewellery for galleries across the UK, teach regular and popular jewellery design workshops, and also offer private tuition. My jewellery design projects have been published in both UK and US magazines and books.

1. Tube Set Ring - set sparkling gems in smooth modern settings: Hello. My name's John Tinley, armature designer and shooter from the South Coast UK and welcome to the chip set wrinkles . The aim of this class is to teach the more stone setting techniques, especially to help you use beautiful fasted stones in your work. They sparkle so beautifully under available in such a wonderful array of colors and sizes that it really is about time that I filmed a class to teach you how to use them. As the name of the class suggests, I'm going to teach you how to set a massive stone in length of tube, and we're going to be working with round faceted stones. You can do some other techniques with other shapes of stones, but round ones are definitely the best ones to start out with. Personally, I think that to setting is the easiest of the different types of fastest on setting. After all, the start of setting the tube is actually really made for you. This class goes through a few technical sections before we actually start making setting, and they are there to help you understand how to choose the best stone, the best tube on the best burgers. They really are important because they will help you to avoid common mistakes and to help you most easily and efficiently create a really, really beautiful setting, their world worth watching carefully on going back to watch again, if you need to. The diagrams that are in those sections also available in a downloadable PdF attached class materials. Andi in that PDF is also information about the different sizes of tube was needed to make the settings. I will be foaming more classes on Jube Setting, by the way, so understanding the names of the different parts of stone, for example, will help you in those classes as well. So if you're ready to start adding beautiful facet stones to your jewelry designs, that's have a look at the materials and the equipment that we're going to need. 2. Tube Set Ring - materials: the's are the materials I'm going to use to make the tube set ring. As you can see. What's he made? The ring already has been made out off two millimeter stunning silver around wire. Andi, I made it to a site que I gave it a lovely hammered texture on all the outside edges is something that's going to catch the light beautifully along with stone. Obviously, you can add a texture of your choice, or you leave the ring completely smooth. It's absolutely up to you to pendulum Look, you're going for. I'm going to be setting one of these beautiful road light garnets, these raspberry pinky red garnets you can see here. I'm going to choose the best stone out of a three first technique that I explain more about that shortly, but you do need a well buster stove. This technique. It is possible to set other stones in very similar settings, but it's Faris have start off with a round stone. These are five millimeter in diameter, and you can set a good range of sizes in a tube setting. I set anything between two millimeters to 6.5 7 millimeters in diameter, But I say the most common sight is both popular sizes I set are usually between 3 to 4.5 millimeters in diameter. As with the text stronger ring, it really depends on the look that you're going for, whether you want to such dainty stones to be worn on stacking rings or whether you want to make more of a statement piece. And last thing as you'd expect from a class, is going to be charged a cheap. So I think that is links off stunning silver tube banger links. The tube is probably one of most expensive ways that you can buy silver because a lot of work goes into forming it. You can make it yourself. I'm not gonna cover it in this class. It takes a lot of skill and quite a bit of time. Andi, I think, honestly, I think we're quite lucky now that we can buy it in a good range of sizes. Andi in a good range materials to I've got quite a long piece here on. I'm only going to need a fraction off it, but I actually find it far easier to work with a longer piece. Make the setting and then cut off what I need to explain Why, when we get to that part the class, you must make sure that you have a size of tube that fits the stone that you are setting on a touch to the class materials is a downloadable pdf with with a table it listing the size of stones that I regularly set. Andi the sizes off tube that I used to set them in and tube is sold the combination of inside diameter and outside diameter. This particular tube has got a outside diameter off 5.5 millimeters andan inside diameter of 4.2 millimeters. I'll explain the significance of the 02 measurements again when we get to that stage, the class. 3. Tube Set Ring - equipment: This is the equipment that we're going to need to make the tube set section off the ring on to set the small, round faceted stone that's I'm putting on top of the ring. However, the equipment that's needed to make the ring shank itself is covered in a simple, hammered rings class. So if you're not already familiar with how to do that, then please do make sure that you go and have a have a watch off that class because you'll find it useful. The first scenes I'm going to have to do to silver tubes I'm gonna set the fasted stone in is file it to make sure that the end of swear I'm going to use a six inch of flat filed for that are you also use it in a cup of other points in the class as well, and the Engineers Square is there to help me make certain that the end of the tube is definitely swear. I've also got a flat needle file and that will be used around the top off the setting to just make sure that it is ready for the soon to be setting to it. The seat for the stone is going to be formed using two different types of burgers I've got around where? Orb orb er on a stone sitting boat. And I talked you more about features of those burgers on. Did the reasons why I like to use those particular ones in a later section of the class. By the way, my birds have got to cut it tips, because to help you keep track of which sizes which especially when I've got lots of people in for workshop. I use nail varnish to color the end so the different sizes have got different colors so that I can put them back into the right boxes and don't get muddled up. I'm going to use my pendant drill two burr the seat into the hole, and it really does need to be a pendant drill. If indeed you are going to use a motorized drill has to be a pendant drill because it is very important to stop and start the birth inside the tube. You mustn't have it running, Andi. Then put it into the tube. I explain why later on Andi, only a pendant drill will allow you to do that. because you operate it with a foot pedal. Unless, of course, you can have someone with you to turn your jewels on or for you. And that's not always possible. Don't fret. So if you do not have a pendant drill, because it is actually possible to create these settings without a motorized drill. The piece of kit ciencia front, if you now is called a pin vice on dit, has a chuckle. The end just like a drill that you can put different things inside. Onda. As you can see, I'm holding the border and in the palm of my hand and using fingers and thumb to twist it. The wheel. The thumb wheel that's in the middle allows me to twists the vice of the chuck at the end and therefore twists the bird that I've got in there inside the tube. So obviously it would take longer to burst seat with a pin rice, but it is possible you might also want to use a pen vice just about the very last. But if you've got your seat really very, very close for the stone that you are wanting to set and you're worried about going for a bit too far, too quickly with a pendant drill. Then you could use a pen vice just to hold the birth and twisted inside the seat a little bit by hand just to refine the seat. It is sick perfectly. One piece of kit that you might not have expected to see on the dust Here is a long knitting needle. This is long enough to fit inside my tube and also thin enough to fit inside the tubas. Well, I'll actually find it very, very useful for helping to gently push the stone out of the tube without actually causing damage to the facets of the stone. Because there are going to be times even need to put the stone into the seat should see if the seat has been burned down far enough, and then take the stone or back out again so you can continue borrowing and obviously so that you can solder this setting on top of the ring on. Sometimes the stone gets a little bit tight inner, so something to encourage it back out again gently is very useful. It was a set additional Canopus because, as I would explain shortly, it is very important to make sure you know your stone size on that. Your burgers are the same size as your stone. Whether you are blurring with a pendant drill or pin vice, you need to make sure that you lubricates the birds. It helps everything to go smoother. Andi. It also house the birds to last longer. You can use bees wax as I've got here, or you can use a lubricant like ber life. It's up to you. I'm going to use a Sharpie and couple of different stages that class just to mark the silversides. I know where toe work on its way to file and where to cut. And when the seat is cut into the tube, I'm then going to cut it to the right length. I'm going to support the tube in the joint level with the red handle that you can see here , holds everything nicely and helps me to cut as square across the tube as possible. I'm going to support the joint level on my bench pay costs. I'm working on day. I'm going to use my jewels sore to cut through the tube once the first tooth setting is soldered on top of the ring. It's obviously time to set the stone, and I've got to both the battle pusher on a burnish er that will help me to get that job done. Amassed some setting a stone in the ring. I'm going to hold the ring in this ring clamp. It will make sure that rings held nice and firmly and tightly, and it's going to be a lot easier for me to grip on to than a very small ruling when I need to hold everything steady and lastly, an optional tool that again goes independent. Drill. This one doesn't work in a pin vice because you can't spare around fast enough. But this is a silicon disk. Andi. It's quite a fine silicon disk of fine grade. Yet silicon disks in different grades on each great has its own color. Um, this is a black one, even though the one that's actually on the mandala looks more gray now. It's because it's being colored by the silver as I've used it. They are rubber wheels are quite soft wheels, but they are embedded with different grades of silica, which allows them to be abrasive but with a great as fine as this one. They do move a little bit of my child to clean up nicely, but they also leave a really lovely finish. So I like to use this to clean up around the top of the tube setting once a stone set. So I've got one on the Mandrell. But you can see beside it the size that they start out at and also the color that they start out on. They got worn away as you use them. This is a soldier in class, so we also now have a look at the soldering equipment that I use for small projects like this. 4. Tube Set Ring - soldering equipment: This is the soldier equipment, as I use for all of my smaller projects, such as earrings, and so pendants everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks or soldering blocks, while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap on top of that on Do they form? Nice of my balls has, I mean used to decorate my projects when I need to pick up my work or to support it whilst I'm soldering? I used reverse action tweezers that you can see here, and I've also got a pair on a stand through 1/3 hand, and it's there when I need 12 on extra hands to help me out. The blue handled stick is a soldier pick on and that I used to push soldier move it about to make sure it it's exactly where I want it to be. Soldier usually comes in strips or sticks. Andi, I've got three different melting temperatures here that I using combination for different projects. The soldier gets cut into small pieces or Palin's you ting. The red handles snips as I keep those little pieces in the labeled boxes that you can see do. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder start. I can't tell which melting temperature they are. The more cold over they are, they're higher. The mountain temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use of flux with it. Andi, the paintbrushes. What I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work. Small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans. Since the same type of gas, butane gas that you use to refill cigarette lighter at the back of a picture, you can see a slow cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution go to safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flames before cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans that Caprock sides up before you put your work in the safety pickle, it needs to be cooled down or quenched in a pot of water. Andi, you need to put your work in and out of the safety pickle with brass or plastic tweezers. Not the stainless steel ones that I showed you before and thus, but definitely not least our have safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Look after them carefully. 5. Tube Set Ring - choosing the best stone: the's the 35 millimeter diameter garnets that I showed you earlier on. I just want to talk to you a little bit about the features of around fasted stone, as this might be the first class that you've watched that you system Onda. Also about the importance of checking site is of your stone and choosing the best one for the chip set technique. So I've raised him upon this little box just sir, to bring a bit closest that Cameron keeping focus. Andi, just say, get a bit of a better look. But you can see how beautifully those facets catch the light. Now, the faceted stone around sitting around fasted stone has got facets or around the top. And you can get different classes patterns of facets. But but this particular cut with a, uh, flat face in the middle surrounded by swore facets, sloping down the outside of that round flat area is a very traditional on quite common type of cut, and its most normally known as a brilliant cut because it is so beautifully brilliant shiny that crater on obvious name for it. But I switched to go serious. I said some of the features. So if we have a look at this diagram, it's a little bit bigger than the stones, and it should hopefully make things a lot easier to for you to see onder you to see which part which name refers to which part. The white spots. The stone, the part of which the diameter is measured is the girdle, and that's apart. I will be measuring all three of these stones to find the best one for the tube setting techniques I'm going to teach you. The area above the girdle is called the crown. On the area below is called the Pavilion. There are facets on both the crown and pavilion Andi. All of the facets are designed to allow the maximum of light, not just into the stone, but what's it about? Surround inside the stone to disperse within the stone to produce the amount of, for myself a shine or fire. It's sometimes called an amount of brilliance, which is where the stone cut takes its name. The very bottom of the stone is called the collect. That point you better at the bottom on the flat area at the top of the crown is known as the table. You're here. We refer to the girdle on the table quite a bit during this technique. Now, these three stones were bought as five millimeter rounds on, and they are calibrated stones. You can buy stones that are maybe what more expensive, A freer cut. That Uh huh. One off. So available of very, very limited amount on their sizes, maybe a little bit more flexible. But it is common for suppliers to offer a range of calibrated stones. And that means that they are cut by a machine that has been programmed to produce very, very precise facets. Andre precise sizes. However, the sizes of the proportions between the individual stones do very because we are working with such small things because these are only five millimeters in diameter, it only takes a teeny tiny change to make a difference to the diameter or to the difference off the depths of pavilion or the height of the crown. So you can buy several fastest stones that I've done here than I originally had. 10 of thes e. I can buy Tanger, pack it all the same stone from the same supplier, probably from the same packets that they received. But there will be variations between them. Andi, I want to show you some of these. So what I'm going to do is attorneys. I can get hold of them upside down because that is actually, if they are table down that it's the easiest way to measure their diameter. I'm going to try and hold. I've got my values here by just two calipers here. I'm going to try and use thes and hold everything in such way that you can still see the reading. Now what I do, but it make sure that it is zero to do it if need be on, then slide it across the stone like so good. Tip it up a little bit futile to see the reading. I think I might have moved actually a little bit, because has 5.1 I like to, especially on this size, to turn it round it to take that measurement again just to make sure. Yeah, five foot 11 so a little bit bigger down the five millimeter that I ordered, but it's still in the acceptable range of sizes. This swan Chance 5.1 5.95 point one, so she quite similar sites could much power there on this one. Who? 4.95 turn around 50 site, 4.92 So those are actually believe that once similarity to the front. Want to separate that out again? That's once I'm going to use going to tell you why, so there's not too much of a difference then, but it's not unusual. Tour for Mito. Order a packet off five millimeter stones, for example, and actually inside the packets, there will be anything from 4.8 to 5.2. But the best suppliers, if you ask them, will take the time to measure the stones to find your best much pair, for example, or if you ask them to actually know that you're going to be June tubes setting, Um, you want, for example, closest possible 25 millimeter. They will get you close as possible, but not going over five millimeters in diameter. That really is worth finding a supplier. If you're going to do quite a few of these, finding a supplier who is reliable enough to actually do that for you and the best ones will the other way that the stones can differ. And this is not going to be quite so easy to see because of the, um, angle of the camera I found. If I come any closer, come into different angle, they go out of focus, complete. If I move that one closer, chip it up a little bit. One of the reasons I chose this box is that they don't six light very easily on this on the lid of the box. Now, I'm not sure what you can tell from the be of the camera, because it is a very, very small difference. You might have to take my word for it, but this stone doesn't have such a great depth as those two. Now for this particular technique, that doesn't really make much of a difference. But if you were doing, for example, a different typesetting, maybe across setting, then you might want to take into account more the depths of the stone and also another typesetting called flush setting as well that the depth of the stone is particularly important. So not ankle needed very in diameter. But they also very in depth, sometimes as well. So what? I want you to take away from this. Well, it's really to make sure that you measure your stones because this setting needs a very precise a seat to be cut into. I can t tip a piece of tube, and for that to be cut with your buzz, you need to make sure that you use birds that are exactly the same size as the stone that you are using. So these two are 5.1 millimeters on bond. Pretty likely that thes five millimeter Byrs. I'm not going to cut a seats. It's quite big enough for this. For these 5.1 millimeter stones, I might be able to get away with it, but it would be a little bit of a risk. There are ways around it, and I will discuss those with you at the towards the end of the class of cup of troubleshooting hints and tips. But I know that I will be far better off with this stone, which was only a teeny tiny fraction under the five millimeters. I would always prefer a teeny tiny fraction under then a teeny tiny fraction above, because that one might not fit into the setting that one will, but it's not so far below that it's going to cause it's called a problem. So this is a so I'm going to go with our next sonny to explain to you why I am using this particular size of tube. 6. Tube Set Ring - choosing the best tube: Now I've chosen my stone and explain to buy out the three. I've chosen that one. Now I need to explain why I'm using this size of tube. I need to make sure that you choose a tube that has got an inside diameter too small to allow the stone to go into it to fall in on one that has two big oven outside damage. Eso that's there is, doesn't it? Isn't all covered by the stone is still a room of silver that you can see around this stone on If I put so my search trying to find the best angle to sure you this I see. That's Rachel. No, obviously this stone is too big to falling. Toothless. Nice troop. You can see that it's sitting on the top is not falling. And that's pretty obvious. But you should also be able to see him to keep The focus is turning around. So me sparkles is no wanting to focus on it. There, There we go. Right. See this quickly? No, go ahead. Their guys quit reported Get good Out of focus again. I got to keep moving it, I think. But you should be out to see what it is or not those, uh, that there was a room of silver around that stone on its know very much at all. Remember that this tube is what I say. It may have my notes against I get role. It is 5.5 outside diameter at 4.2 inside diameter. So a difference off 1.3 millimeters if my mother is working correctly. But obviously that 1.3 is split between two separate sites with the war feeling have signs of a circle. So the wall thicknesses half of the difference between the inside and outside diameters. So the wall thickness is 0.65 off a millimeter. Andi, believe me, that is enough to create the settings. Yes, You're going to carve use of birds to carve some of silver from the middle to make the inside diameter bit bigger on car. Vous etes of stone fit. Seen just enough on no further. Aunt still rip but produce sewer allow you to have ah, enough of silver around the edge for you to push over and set the stone So it really doesn't need very much a tall. But please do refer to the pdf that I could touch that list society tube that I use on do that will give you an idea off the combinations inside and outside diameter that is good for the difference. Different stones. You might not be able to find the exact same size a chew, but I use if you're outside the UK, but you will find ones that are very, very similar on that will be perfectly good to produce a really nice setting for your stone . So a moment I liken it up so you can see the stone is sitting on the top. You might want to see if I move it about. You can just see the girdle catching the light from the widest point of stone. And at the moment that is sitting proud, it's not sitting inside the tube. There's one more better technical information to give you. If you can bear with me, it is useful, I promise on. Then we'll actually get on with making setting 7. Tube Set Ring - choosing the best burrs: Now there are lots of different shapes on Daufuskie sizes, but protect you talk about the shapes at the moment off. Different birds available in the market. Andi, I've got here a round, but opposite because it's around sometimes called a ball, for we can all see Chris the shape. Andi, This one is a stone setting birth. Yeah, a closer look if that one that one on it. So on it was stone sitting birth because it is the same general shape as the stones. I showed you remember the day the diagram of the brilliant cut fasted stone that I I showed you earlier on day. It's got a tip of the bottom shape at the bottom that to mimics the pavilion on door. So a line around it rumor rim around, it's the pavilion picked up mimics the girdle much some of the girdle. So I start with a barber and then move on to a stone setting bar to finish off the setting and create a nice seat for the stone to sit in. Now you will come across other tutorials that might use a different combination off birth. Some will just use of a barber someone just used stone setting birth. There's so much even use a bud uber, which had been kind of flame shape. I think about a body on the tree. Obviously, eso a different curve shape to it on. Some might use what's called a hot bird. H a r T Andi. There's nothing wrong with using those on. There's something wrong with using these. What you do need to do, though, is work out the technique at the right technique for you that gets the right result in a safe and efficient way. But I'm going to explain to you now why I use this particular combination off birth on, and it's time for another diagram. The job of the birth is to create a seat inside the tube. We want the stone to sit inside the tube so that the girdle going side on. Ideally, the table is flush with the top of the tube. So essentially we wanting to create a ledge inside the tube that's the stone will sit on and sit on, so it is really beautifully level. You do not want a wonky seat because that's going to create a wonky stone that's going to be difficult to set and is not going to look nice and probably won't look so you won't be secure either. And I find for me that a stone setting bird is the best one to create that because the part of the bird that mimics the girdle creates a really nice study. Smooth level seat. However, one of the things that you must do in this technique is to hold your stone setting burr really upright in relation to the tubes, absolutely in line with the two, because have a look at this diagram. And if you've got the stone setting birth, even at a very, very slight angle off the vertical, it is not going to cut a little seat. But I really explained the problems that can cause, however around but is round, no matter what angle you are, holding it inside the tube. Now, obviously, you do want to make sure that you are holding it in as vertically as in line with tube as possible, but where humans it can look perfectly lined up from the position that you're looking at. But if someone was to look from the side, they might see it's actually PSA lightly off the vertical. It's difficult for you to check to move your head round the sides the tube to check that, because that you do that, you're going to move the birth and you can't really expect there to be somebody with you to check for you every time you're doing one of these settings. So we need a way around that. So I like to start my setting with the round berth, the ball birth, Andi. That's because I know that even if despite my very best efforts, I have got the birth at slightly off, being perfectly in line with the tube, it is still going to cut a really nice uniform round shape into that tube. I for that shape down to about the midpoint on the round berth, Andi. Then I change over to the stone setting birth I used to stun setting birth to finish off the seat. Now you have a quick look at this die around. You'll see that because I have already started to burn down into the tube that helps. The stone setting birth sits at the right angle to sit as perfectly as possible, in line with the tube, so it helps. May I find two creates the most level perfect seat that I want for this technique. So I start off with Bober. I start creating a seat. It allows me to then change over the stone setting bird to finish off the seats, the to the right shape that I want on the right depth inside the tube. But the because of re started to burn with the ball burr. It's almost as if it it helps were basically helps the stone sitting boat, a self center inside the tube, but a quick reminder. As Ivory said, It's really important to make sure that you got the right size birth for your stones. So do check the scientists stone. I sometimes worth double checking besides your birds as well, to make sure you picked up the right ones that they haven't got muddled up because if you use a Berlitz too big stone might fall through. If you the bird that's too small or so my not fitting, they do take the time to go through your measurements. Now that's most of technical information. Ask the way that special was actually making a setting inside the tube 8. Tube Set Ring - filing the tube: before I can actually birther seat into the tube. I need to make sure that the top tube is completely square. There is absolutely no point in creating a seat if the top is at an angle, because then you're not going to have a nice, neat flush setting. Um, so that's the state have to do now. And there are two tools that I'm going to use. Help me. One of them is the six inch flat file on, and the other is an engineer square on the engines square, going to use my holding the tube up against the handle on so I'm looking at is the where the top tube meets the section here. I'm looking to see whether any daylight comes through so I usually hold this up. So it it's got ah, light source at the back of it that I can see whether there's a light coming through. So I don't know whether you can see as I move this up. Intel's has got dark background, lighter background behind it says Alternate those two. By general, you can see, but that is, at the moment, a gap at the top of that tube. The tube is sloping slightly in the direction. So I said, I need to get rid of that. Now if you have filed the end off thankful by the used to make a bangle or using to make a ring than you have basically done this before. So I'm going to do My preferred method is to hold the tube across the bench. Pake So it is at right angles across the bench, paid with a little bit hanging off the end on and I then hold the file parallel, toothy edge off the pain here so that I know that us I find remember the files and work going in one direction as I file. I know that I'm holding the file at the angle that I want to toot and at. So I'm firing the higher points automatically until it becomes flushed. Uh, the other thing I do, we can see me during it. IHS, try to keep bringing it out the way you should cut my fingers close up here, but I try to move them so you can see as well. But I'm turning the tube every couple of strokes and I find that that, um well the combination of those three right angles across parallel to side containing the tube. I find that that helps me to get the smoothest squarest finish out of top that tube. So I got a few check again and make sure that you usually returning to began. Make sure that you check all the way around the show different directions because actually , that way you can see it looks perfect. I can't see any gaps. So a tool, however, turn it that way and they're still lead orbit that slope showing again. So I know that it's nice and square going cross that way, but know that way. So each do has been filing. So I started to get with its slopes that was there. But I need to get it off one of it. So it doesn't usually take to me file strokes. So do check quite frequently, but that is now nice on square across the top that's ready for me to bear the seat into the top of tube 9. Tube Set Ring - burring the seat: I've got my round bare or my ball birth set up in the chuck on my pension drill off so you could see the that handle. The Chuck itself have actually shut off the rest of it. The motors are off theatre view of the camera, but it is their list. You'll hear it in a moment, but the Warburg is set in. I've fought the Sosa timber ready, waiting for when I need it tube here with the end that I have filed. Nice of flat. Andi. I've also got about her. Beeswax is quite old. Huckabee's works probably had this about 10 years now on. It just goes to show that readers last a long time making use bees wax. Or you can use something Bour life different. People prefer different things. It's completely up to you. They do the same job, but one thing that I do find is that beat wax using these Wait. It's far easier to clock up the uh cutting surface on your or bar or any bar with bees. Accent is with birdlife sea and want to put a team tiny bit on my show that in the moment, but the reason why you must make sure that you use lubrication on the birds, no matter which one you choose is that not only do they help everything go a little bit more smoothly, but they help to make your birth lost a little bit longer because thes don't last forever. Eventually, they do become London's, um, blunted rather. Sorry, Andi. I find that the ball burgers tend to get blunter quicker, then stone sitting burgers. So it's actually which, um, good job that the Bulls buyers are usually a bit cheaper there. So sitting birds as well, so do make sure that use lubrication. Just gonna make sure that I got the pedal off my handed drill set up so that my king gets to it comfortably. But better associate, I'm, you know, little bit of a different position. Then I am usually so I can come back to get a good shot of what I'm doing. But that's the noise that my pendant bill is going to make. So bond and you do to lubricate this is just what it spent and just touch it, and that is enough. Well, I might need to add a little bit more later I certainly will need to answer some to the stone setting burr, but that's enough for now. And you'll get so to you have to feel when your bird needs actually vacation, you'll find it is not running quite as smooth. So can and to she going to move. But box there that stone was in just moving up slightly because how I had the flex yourself , the cable off the pendant was paying right now making noise, and it was a nice both, I expect so I'm holding, uh, there we go so that it's, um, nicely vertical, nicely lined up in the top of the tube. As I said, it might not be vertical. Look even one side to the other one in lying with the tube in. We need it from one side or another, but if I moved to try and check that, I'll go end up moving the painting. Jill is well, so, as I said, that is one of the reasons why I prefer to start with the ball. But now I've got my yes. When I see a focus for you, it will change us. The bird goes round because camera will start to focus on different things. But what? I, um So that was my file. What I'm making sure, So I'm doing is I've got the birth. There we go, the birth in there. I've got my fingers. I'm close to the end of the tube. So it's like, what? Control over where I'm actually working, But I don't want my finger actually going off the boat itself because I don't want my my finger to get hurt. So everything lined up. That's burn. No, exactly the nicest sound, but it gets the job done. So it's gone in maybe 1/3 of the way, As I need it to remember, I'm taking it up to the widest point. Own that first, if I can hold it up here, usually like to braced up against something. But I think that is better focus for you. So a see if that will work, you might be able to see the dust coming off on. I'm holding everything over the leather apron underneath my bench pig so that that it was just a little bit of justice being caught and saved as much as possible. Um, on and you should spare to see recognize that they were with you in furthering Andi. If you look, let's get this my second focus. So we go, Um, as I turn this round, you should be able to see that the top of that tube no longer looks nice and flush. Going across It was a bit duller. Andi, I got to see it. It's actually sloping in towards the middle off tube. But there is still a rim of silver there, so started to burrow in. So whether was going to be written or noise as unavoidable, but going to continue to bear until I in the center that go out to the midpoint of the birth, I probably do it in a couple of stages because it is best to start a little bit so that the nothing overheats because to get a bit hottest well, onda also so that you can clear the debris out as well. Now, one thing that is very, very important for me to say is that you have noticed I did not start the birth until it was inside the tube, and I did not remove the bar until it has stopped moving. That is very important. If you move the bar in or out of your setting as it is moving, you will damage the top off the setting, so don't do it. If you forget on it does happen there and it's quite close on with blurring then it is not a nightmare, because absolute problem, because if you do cause any damage to the top damage that you cause will then be removed at uber deeper into jeeps setting. So if it just happened in the first time of me blurring the but we just saw, then it wouldn't be disaster because next bit it would have removed that that little bit of damage. But if you forget a little bit, close that setting being finished. Andi, you realize you've caused some damage at the top, but the setting is exactly the right size. I'm afraid what you don't have to do, then it's all filing to remove the damage on down Burr. Further down on that actually is one of the reasons why I prefer to work with, um, a longer piece chew, um, so that if I do need to burn further down, I can do so. The other reason. It's so much easier to hold a longer piece of tube last year, Boeing it that it is a short piece so healthy you don't need to buy such a long length. Just a few centimeters will do when you get quite a few settings out, that is your see when it gets to save on cutting just the bit off that I need. But a longer piece is so much easier to work with. So let's get this set up again again trying to pass it into focus for you. There we go. So you're going a bit deeper. Ready for the noise? I moved that, sir. We've actually shocked because I actually blew the dust for the top on to my eye That looks halfway in pendant drill out off way. So Okay, you got to see now that setting looks a little bit deeper, so I'm going to get stone. So so I could check the city, sir, I get a stone out off books just there on bond. I'm gonna get that brush that little bit of silver dust off because I don't want it to get on stone. It is important again just to being off blew it again to clean off just that much mean at the top of that tubes and that setting because even if there's a little bit of silver dust in there, it would prevent the stone from sitting nicely. So easiest way I find of putting with stone in the setting. Here's to put the stone upside down on a flat surface and put the setting over the top on. Um, doesn't always, always not gonna do it that time most the time, but obviously not for camera hit will stay in. I should further down you birth seat, the more likely it is to stay in. Now that's oversee not deep enough because it's moving around a lot. Six, citing around Andi, you can see the Stones still sitting proud by dearly. We want that table for rush with the top of the stone. It's not yet which I wasn't expecting it to be. I haven't changed over to using the stone setting birth. What I have got, though, is what I was expecting hoping to see is that the girdle is just starting to disappear inside the setting because I used a birth. It's the same size stone as close as I can humanly make it. Um, I know that I have bird, Um, as far as the widest point off the the birth. So I was expecting that the girdle would be starting to sitting that I had carved bird Ah, wide enough area for it starts sitting even if I hadn't got deep enough, which is it far off in. But what you should also be on to see now on this is actually a much better shot. Now they will show you earlier. The light is off better in this position. And also the fact that Stone is starting to sit a bit in makes it easier to see as well. But you can see that despite the fact that the stone is starting to go inside the tube, there is still some silver around the outside. It doesn't take very much. So let's put that stone back in the box on and I'm going to do is now change over to my stone sitting back and again missile. If it's of lubrication, a well that's needed just touching it up against it. Is it spinning round? Check that I've got the right end of the tube it's not unheard off briefing file on the bird so that they're not in my way on and go. Each years there were getting focus. It is believed so much easier to hold this stone setting birth in line with the tube now that I've already cut a bit of a seat for it. So it's it's starting toe to so So it is so century in the So Something to do now is, uh, very little bit Check. If it's the stone about a little bit, Maura's, I probably will need to and keep doing that. It's best to. But which is a time on check frequently Because although it wouldn't be absolute disaster when you've got a longer Peter Toot, few fire. If you bird too far, we'd have to do is file off the top and tidy it up. Um, it would be a big waste of silver in a bit of waste off your time as well. Okay, so see setting, but more so stone going back and being have which but stone back in the box each time. It's so it's not going to going there, says no, its own my sea because I wanted to, um, but that she's stuffing. See, that's that's much furthering. That's not actually for off actual. That's no bad tool. The, um, table is still a little bit visible on it is at this point, I would like to give you get another piece of technical information. Um, you will remember. I am sure that I said that there was a variation between calibration stones on and that stones can have a different depths as well as a scientific diameter, even when they're sold on a trial basis turns off the same diameter. Now that depth will determine two things. It would determine how much tube you have to cut off because of hue setting. You want the tube to cover the whole off the depths of stone. It will also determine whether or not you absolutely have to have the table off the stone flush with tube. So he's another guy run for you in the first stone. The table is not actually that far away from the girdle. There's quite a gentle slope it between going up from the girdle towards the table. In the second stone Second diagram, you can see that the table is further away from Godel on now is a steeper angle between the girdle on the table. Because of that now in the first stone, Big brilliant is absolutely perfect. Toe have the table flush with the top of the tube. However, in the second stone, if you have the table flush with the top of the tube, then you've actually got quite a bit of Silvana. You don't drawn perfectly to scale, but you've actually got quite a bit of silver. Relatively speaking, that you have, you have to push over. So there's two things going on there. One is that that increased Heitor Silver, even though it's going to be a fracture of a millimeter, is going to cover mawr off stone than is necessary to keep the stone in place. Andi, it's going to cover more of the brilliant stone, the lovely stone that you would show off. It's also going to be a little bit harder to push a little bit more difficult to push over , so with the seconds type of stone. If you notice that your stone has got quite a steep slope between the girdle onto the table , that you might decide to have the table. So it's like slightly rates that you might decide to have a tape of slightly above the top of the tube. Now this kind of issue is going to be a lot easier. Future recognized. The more of these tubes settings that you do. I do not expect you to get it perfect the first 345 times, but it will get a lot easier. So one of the reasons why I chose cistern was that officer. It was the closest to five millimeters, but not over five millimeters. But also its didn't have, Ah, very high table above the girdle. If I have the option, I would choose. A stone isn't quite as as deep. They're supposed to one where the table is higher up rather to be speaking. So what I'm going to do now it's needs to come back out now it might tip out. No, it's when you get to the stage where your stone is a bit further in its also, you see it back out again. There's two things you can do you can with your hand covering so that this isn't particularly interesting shot. I do apologize, but it's necessary with your hand covering the end of the tube. If you just stop it on the surface, the stone might come out. But it's not this time. So what I'm going to do instead good the knitting. It'll I said that there was a reason why there was a knitting needle in a jewelry class. Sort of done is. So put the needle through to prophesy. Need a needle that is going to be able to fit through the tube and long enough to go through your tubas well in peace tube on that gently pushes it out. I you'd like to use a knitting needle for their speakers. It hasn't got a sharp hand. They come in a range of sizes that you always have to find one that fits through, um, there long enough to fit through. And they're not going to have to to cause any damage to Stone. So that's going to go back into its box again on I'm going to continue to burn just a little bit further down. Doesn't need to go very far now, so just so so I not the camera a bit apologize, so it's a little bit more on That's enough for the moment because I noticed. I'm pretty close. I believe that our statue stone out again. No. Obviously, you're going to have to do your setting. Cut your setting orbit quicker than I am to remember. I am stopping and starting a lot. Does not fusion take snow soaking Starting to talk to you Now that is not coached by the April thankfully, right. They say that is not white brush. Very, very. Nearly there is not quite fresh. So what I'm going to do is a little bit more. Once I got it flush, I'm going to show you what it looks like when it is flush. Unity Needle just to Okay, I got him remembering to let the first stop before I put it out. Really? Nice seat has been cut back. Please. Should be enough. Yes, that is. That is enough. I still see you, Betsy. Still see a hint about lovely Royals be read because the angle So that's better. The angle at which I am holding the tube. But that is now really nicely cut in. So I'm going to show you a close up of that C get a better idea of what I mean by the table being flush with the top of the job. So I'm holding this tube very carefully because it's second while to get it into focus, because it's so close. I don't want to get out of focus. Now. It is looking straight. Chance miss the side of the tube. Um, so you should be able to see what not we have to see. The stone peeping out of the top should be hard to see. Any color ups there. That's because the table is flushed. But I promise you just that there it is. But you should also be able to see if I turn it round a nice rim of silver all around that stone. Now that is the same height as I can possibly make it as the table, but it is above the girdle, so that is enough to be able to push over the top of the girdle toe, hold the stone in place. So that's what it looks like when it's stone completely flush of that. I haven't got it completely flat knows better. Sometimes they do stop, be complete, flashy moves around Seamus always make sure that they are flashing completely level before you actually set them. So that is, uh, several steps closer to being finished setting of maybe a stone I trying to do now is a little bit off work around the outside, off the setting. I need to do that before I've been cut the tube off. Okay, folks, again they go. So it is the right length for my project. 10. Tube Set Ring - finishing the setting: you've seen may prepare the seat inside the tube, but I now need to do a bit to the top edge off the outside the toot Finish preparing. Setting Andi. This is pretty much the same as what she would do with the top off a better war for basil setting. We're going to remove some of the material around the top, not very much the, UH, standard rule. It's such removed no more than 1/3 of material that's there, because, see, there's not very much there at the moment, so I'm really not going to be removing very much material. But it will make a difference because, unlike with the basil strip that I use for my bottle settings, this is sterling silver, not find silver. So it is a lot stronger material on now before it's going to need a bit more effort to push the silver over this stone. The fact that it is a small diameter was well is also going to mean that this bit little bit stronger. If it was the same a thickness of sterling silver but say 10 millimeters in diameter and not five, it would be easier to push over But the smaller that the item is, the more strength there is in that. So the combination to the sewing silver on the site means that I'm going to put a lot more effort with the vessel pusher pushing the war over the stone. So you need to do what you can to make it a bit easier hand. One thing, obviously, is to remove a little bit of the metal from around the top here said. It's not very much Andi. If you've watched the best of setting classes, this will be quite manure already. So I've got my flat needle file on hold. It's It's about 60 degrees ish on we're going to do. He's just swept across some holding it, but that kind of angle turning around that see the angles. I'm holding it before I turn it around. Um, I'm just going around tough, just a sweeping across the top so she might be able to see its very source of getting back into focus for you. Um, I see kind of Christopher brighter area there just to the top, but not around there. I haven't felt tour yet, so I'm just going to continue so you feel it off, You know, because this is only a thin war. Um, I don't want to ever do it. So I suppose I turned Teoh air on the side of caution. I do remove a bit, but I don't take down further. I don't remove a great deal, but what I will do if I need to, is, um whilst I'm setting a stone, if I feel that I actually should have taken off a little bit more silver than I will carefully go back with the need of file and I have to do it in that direction. You might see me do it. Hand you on how I found setting this this choose stowed in this tube. Don't be afraid basically to go back when you probably through setting and take a little bit more off if you need to. But I'll go through that again. We're actually set in the stone, so that is all I need to do to the top. The next thing I need to do is trip off the tube was high. Hopes you don't need this whole legs or my ring. Just such a bit at the top. That 11. Tube Set Rings - cutting the tube: in this past class, I'm going to trim off. So off the part of the tube that has got setting in so that I can soldier it onto the rink off. See, I don't want this this whole length, but I need to make sure that I do have, at the very least, enough of a tube to be able to cover the bottom off. Stone don't want the stone. How he threw you can go more than that to say, if the stone, if I only actually needed up to where my nail is, I could decide about you a little bit more of a statement. I want the second bit taller. I'm going to cut off a little bit longer, and that would be absolutely fine, which has a minimum. You need to cut off what covers the stone. In fact, I have to say the minimum of the depths of stone, plus maybe another millimeter because you're going to need to do is filing just to refine the cut of the level at the bottom of that piece Tubing. Now there's two ways in which you could make sure that you've got the amount of silver measured you can either use digital karpers too much other depths of stone and then measure used car because again, to transfer that measurement, want to hear four? I could do it in little bits of her more so in a way, something to do. So I've got the stone upside down to table down on top of the the bench. Peg. Andi, I've got to but next to it, but I'm going to do is kneel down so that my eyes are level is here and then use my Sharpie to mark on the tube where I want to cut. Okay, So just marked of the seven words about millimeter more when I actually need, um so going to take that maybe a little bit. It's a bit sicker myself. A little bit more. I've been to cut that that nine. And if you've watched any of the other classes where I've used to comfort from classes, it use Toobin earrings, then you have seen me use. There's still before it is a joint leveller, Andi. Its job is to hold a piece of tube and some God comes across. Hold it. Handle here On day I turned to rest it on top of my bench. Pike. Andi, this is slopped here. That one there that so blade goes into. If I move, see if I could move Huggel out of the way. At the moment, that's a lot is not quite in line with the mark on my shark. This stopper moves in and out and titans with some wheel here post position. So I'm going to do is just allow that stopper to wiggle out a little bit until it got to the stage that when my tube is pushed up against it, that Mark is in line with slot that my blade with attention on, then I could tighten that Some screw this won't move on. I couldn't know easily. Make sure put the bartender he easily and securely hold the tube like so. So I'm going to do my guys seen so I never see just going to So my files rushing about this sound I'm doing this No way. So put pressure on so late that it do the job for you on If you find that you need a bit of lubrication, you're so right then by my or beings addict. Here you're finds that the song was Something gets a little bit easier as you get towards the bottom of the tube because you're obviously story through Not such a wide heart, - no quite fish way. So one of the best tube. So it playing to that make little sense things from on. And it was just and my sitting, so I put the stone in a chop. There we go. There's my setting with Stone. I'm with the ring, so I need to do a little bit of filing both to the bottom of setting on did to the ring before I can solder the two of those together. 12. Tube Set Ring - preparing for soldering: I've put the garlic back in its little box for safekeeping because said it once at, in a way, my file. But I need to do some filing to both the bottom off the stone setting aunt to the ring before I can't solve them together. Because at the moment, this isn't completely square going all the way across that despite the fact that the joint level that you're supposed to help you hold the tube was neatly firmly as safely as possible so that you can cut a hopefully nice straight line all the way across wearing human. There was going to be a tiny, beautiful wiggle new there, but it's a little bit more. It really is worth doing interests to time on checking frequently because you don't want to take it too far. More strokes, I think should do it. There we go now, but you've seen me use an engineer square to check for the squareness of things before. But I find this is actually but too small to do that with. I find doing by I is accurate enough. So that is now ready. However, I need to do the finding of preparation to the ring. I put a tensile look Sharf amazing, but they're to show where the soldier joint. Waas I I heated the ring up very, very gently. Not very much it'll, but just until the sort of joint which felt really smooth, I couldn't see it. Which is this sign, Um, before I heated it up. But the little bit of heat changed the color of the silver on and made the soldier stand out. Remember, they're not going to change the same color under heat because they are different metals. So that's just highlighted that So I'm going to do again. Very much the same as you've seen me do in stone centering classes before, is that I've put the searching lined up about the join. Well, I'm just going to put Sharpie mark for the wits, not quite the whole wits, but most of it of that setting. Um, it is particularly important to file a wide enough flat area for the these types of settings because obviously the silver that you are going to solder on two the ring, he said. The edges of setting there's nothing in the middle. It's not like it's a battle setting with the backing fate. There's nothing in the middle to soldier runs. You've got to make sure that you do the the file dairy on ring wide enough to accommodate this. You certainly can't leave it curved, because the moment, although it is quite subtle, the curved area is a phone away from the sites that tube here. So I haven't marked quite as much as I think I need to file, but I will mark. I will file that with check it and then see how much further I need to take it. So I said, You're seeing me do this full. I prefer to hold the ring slightly off the edge off the bench. Prank on and off farm like so it's actually everything to lined up, so I think they'll be found at the right angle. If I hold the file parallel to the edge bench pick and I have to cover. Yeah, you can still see it on here as I'm holding it down for me as well. See flatter area there stop quite so easy to see, I've realized, because I put 100 texture from the band's attend to draw your eye away. But because he is a bit more of a shine. That's not quite wide enough, which is what I was expecting. Okay, that is now a wide enough area for the truth, um, to sit very nicely together. So the next job is to soldier setting on top of the ring. 13. Tube Set Ring - soldering: again. If you want you by other classes that use different types of stone settings on top of rings , this time to set up shouldn't look unfamiliar to you. I've got the ring shank supported in bent nose. Reverse action tweezers. Andi, although it's out of sight just here underneath the wooden part of the handle. I've got a penny in between the handle on the brick because it's just propping one side that raises up to make sure that they are sitting nice and vertically. So the rain Shankar's sitting vertically in line on top off the stone setting. So is rather handy. Having a supply of pennies and orbits of copper, of different thicknesses, a somehow even steel nails so that you can do things like that. It's always worth taking the time to set things up properly. I've checked the stove for all the different angles just toe. Make sure that it is nice and central on top of the same setting. No matter which way that I'm looking, Andi, I've got the sharp you Mark facing me just says a bit of extra security, so I know that I put it in the right place. I'm not going to see the shadow the shop don't have about what noble sense of I Okay, Clinch it with a a pick and so a little bit smaller than my finger. I won't get in the way so much. Um, that shopping marked by the way, remember, will burn off before I get to soldering tone pressure. So it's not going to inhibit the flow off the soldier. I've also got four for things that might not be visible until my actual point. Not 1234 We thought board up melted bulls off, soldier. Um, on the reason why I have melted them into balls is that I find her setting like this when space is really tight. The fact that they are balls well than flat helps them to sit in up against the soldier join. So I want to put two at the back. All four of them are going to be sitting on the back of stone setting on the rim of the to put back, um, up against the ring. Shank says you should back to front, um on and I find sister with the bulls, they are more likely to get in there neatly. Andi, stay where I want them to be. I do say more likely. I don't say absolutely guaranteed. So we'll keep our fingers crossed. So what I'm going to do? What? The blocks slightly out of you. Hunt. I just dropped my speak drop of flux on to Uh huh. Yeah, I moved it right there with me. When I move it back into place, I was going to say that I was going to check it before I actually started. Soldering, you know that He's looking good, but I will check it again after foot soldier on it before I start heating everything up years dink A something you said Damn paintbrush to thank you. The bulls sold one time, people. Oops. Debate that paintbrushes with more dump. Okay, one that rolled away. Because so be ever so gentle. Taking my time. I don't want that one there Now. This, of course, is now the perfect sample to show you that sometimes you need to go vote She about to begin to set top ago. Um, has always if I make a mistake, I like to put it to keep it in seeking hope that it does happen to everybody, and it is self what's happens. I move that into orbit. A soldier. It's gone in the middle of the juke, so but those say lift that off. My 20 years and other pear trees is there we go that run away. But a soldier tweeze is suffering back like so. And see if I can set it up with those two bits sold already there. That would be rather, well, Hunde. It may not work out, but it's worth a try. This might not be the most interesting thing. Toe watch as I fiddle about with the stone setting, but it is useful to be to see, I think that it does actually happened to everybody. Andi, When it happens to you, it's no big deal. Just take your time to set things up again. So excuse me much, I gonna check it from the other angle. I'm not, thankfully, is looking nice, making the paintbrush damp again with the flux and the fact that the paintbrush, um, his dump is transferring a little bit off flux onto those boards. A soldier. So even though, um, some of the flux would have come off the, um stone setting off the tube in the ring as I moved things about this still enough there, one every guy. All right, so I said, I'm just gonna double check. Triple check that everything is still nicely lined ducks. At this point, if I start heating on, DSO starts flowing. I realize things aren't lined up nicely. Well, that's actually so it really is worth doing this. Taking time to set it up properly. That's looking good from the top on its looking from side. Now it is especially important for me to heat this up gently, so to heat up front, Hammond put a bit of heat into the tweezers because remember there, heat sink there, your heat away from heat shank, the ring shank crunches. I do want it ever so slightly good, no special right and says he's worse. Stopping and checking. Um, I don't want heat up too quickly, because if I do, the flux is far more likely to bubble up and pop. Those are put the pieces sold. Often. It's just see it's taking me a while to set him up. It was worth doing. It's taking a while. I'd rather not have to do it again if I have to. Well, that's life little with it, but I'd rather not have to. So it's going to be heating it up very gently within, gradually putting more heat into tweezers on the ring shank onto the tube. Down here, as everything gets the right temperature, the flux is going to change from beings with white powdery appearance toe a darker, glossy appearance. Andi. That will be one of the signs, along with the color of the silver itself. There may be a British change, the change of that kind of backed brightens of red in the silver. So it will be signs that I'm getting close to solving temperature. So at that point, our stop rushing down a wall but joining to get a soda to melt and flow out, see how far away I claim at the moment. Remember, silver is a wonderful conductor. Eat so the heat will be going through the break. Heating up silver. - I started to see a little bit of the white. How does she in that area there? So the ring socially social heat up, so I'm resigned to plant to fish in a little bit closer Russia slightly, but you tweeze is said they're saintly through each way. So by giving a bit of a top up, just makes it more efficient. Really, I have to notice the color difference at this particular moment between the ring shank on the stone setting on. That is because the range fighters being reached up a couple of times once a soldier it, um and then once again, to find so join, by the way, so majority leader, soldier, which is why maybe Easy soldier to put so city in place on that previous heating off the ring shaped has already led to some of the copper being moved from surface, says the last couple of sides being formed in the ring livers in setting in the chute. Which is why so I thought that white during Look actually started to die down already being happy to put most of my each of them with a shank, Um, for two reasons, the Sonthi treaters doing get away from it to compensate for that. But also it is a big computer, my first to make sure Oh, so the temperature reshape. He's a bit more help get us to my eye the sport soldiers have taken, um, shine. So that again is another indicator along with silver. No, no. See what? Powder way? Go love the but not say those signs. So right on there it goes. So just check. Yes, it has gone on the other side of Well, that's really nice. Oh, look whiter while I turned so sure. So I am not going to pick these tweezers up with my fingers because although the woods does insulate quite quite a lot, I put a lot of heat into these tweezers. Would be easy for my fingers to slope and go into the metal nails of its holding it in place. So the another pair tweet tweezers to pick up the tweezers. You can see everything's in. All right, places a one piece on foreign officer. Look it. It was like to do that. Just a little test on day. I'm going to put the trees is on the ring in the quench parts of him. He could quite allowed sizzle happens. That's one side expecting, um such. It's called everything down. So it's nice. Safe to hope So doesn't look particularly pretty at the moment, But the soldier has thrown out nicely with a brick still hot. We have to the way, um, so the heat coming off there. But that is no. So did all nicely firmly. I said soldier has flown out really nicely or four points, Andi. Or so I haven't until I haven't overheated anything because the soldier join on the ring hasn't been affected. A tall. So you do need to make sure that you remove the heat as soon as your sentences blown. Don't overheat it into miscoding damage previous, so joints. So this now needs to go into the pickle to clean up. And then I'm going to switch to my tumble posture to polish on the show you have set in stone. 14. Tube Set Ring - setting the stone: I've put the ring in the ring clump on, and it is very important to make sure that you put the ring in such a way. That's the setting is a low down as much as possible, supported by the top of the ring. Come because you're going to be putting quite a lot of pressure on this stone setting on and a support accusing you from underneath will help to prevent it from twisting over. It'll ring shank. You shouldn't have that problem anyway on tumor from each other around study. So why, if you use the same as I have? But if you call Singer to create a much dangerous set of half sucking rings, then you do need to be aware that you are going to support the shank on the sitting nicely . This isn't something you just hold in your hands or hold up against the the bench. Paige. You do need to make sure you hold it in a rink clump so it's nice and steady. Feed it. Hold on to, and it's well supported as you can see the stones and setting Already, Andi, I have double checked that it is sitting nice and level on the table is flush with the top of the tube because this wasn't a stone that was really tall. Her quite a steep slope between the girdle on the table. So I can't have the table. As as it should be, textbook should be nice and flush with the top of the tube. As I set the stone, I I'm going to be taking it out. Come of you every now and again just so I can double check for the first few pushes that it is still nice and level. So do make sure you do. That's we start setting this stone. Don't assume that because it stays off level and you do. A couple pushes that it's is still level. Do check it off. First couple pushes checked again off the next couple. Andi. Just it if need be. While my favorite tools to adjust the stone with is a round wooden paintbrush or a toothpick would do the job just as nicely. Essentially, you need something that is very small that is much softer than the stones. Sotus is not going to cause any harm to it, and I find something wouldn't use just nicely I just like with a little setting. I'm going to push north, South, East, west initially, Sean, lock the story in place. At that point, hopefully it should be nice nicely in the setting and still nice and level. So then I'm going to be able to work my way back and forth across It's the stone going in between those four points initially pushed back and forth, I'm pushing the setting further closer towards stone. I'm just going to move the camera so that I've got it focused on where I'm actually going to be holding the ring clocks. I can't hold it in midair like this. I've got to erase it up against something. I'm going to brace it in between my bench on my bench pig so it doesn't slip was I'm putting quite a bit of pressure it. So coming quite a bit closer. I mean, so close that it might be as I start using the Manisha and telling thing to rant, it'll go in and out of focus. A little better support camera is going to be trying to focus. Even that's got a nice, really nice friends on it to try and focus on lots of different things in very sore field of focus. Um, but certain sexual to do is push the petal pusher very firmly at the moment. I'm just mining it, but I'm gonna push it very firmly and steadily, uh, against the setting under walk over, turn round, do the same from the other side up and walk over. And then from just north and south and from east and west as well on, I am going to keep taking it out of you. Start shaking. And then I think, if I can to focus again, just a double check that it has. The stone has stayed nice level. Most of doing that, you could seem grouping quite hard. I'm pushing up against the bench as well. So one to actually is that sometimes I have my some over the top as I do. The first couple pushes just to help hold may actually stone dust a level given a red Lexus sport. But if I do that a tous case, then you would be able to see what I'm doing. But do try that. See if that helps having a thumb up here. If you feel that you want to give it your sewing for inspection protection in case you're two slips and having a sum up across the soon like that apart. Wake was Stone. It's something you might find that you want to do. So that's get started. You can see I am actually tipping over quite away. I'm not bringing that better pusher in contact with Stone, though. Andi, I don't know what you can see yet bring back into focus for you. My guess. It's a light flashing on that side. Good to see that. Yet now this is sterling silver. I'm not find silver on that does mean that it's a harder metal. Got to put a lot more pressure into it. I always find with students when they're learning this technique that they have to go around more times and expected to really push it in nicely. But you do get that promise. It's like pushing up and over and another thing to point out. I would check you that. No. Have you just checking that stone? Still, level notices Behave yourself good. As I was saying. Another thing to point out is that with a battle setting, I'll be pushing. Why should the bottom up against the stone and then walking over. I don't have to do that this time. There's no stone down there. Remember, the silver is in contact with stone only at the girdle. So I am acting further up the stone sitting war. Then you might do for a, uh, the vessel setting, so I can't see now that that's so that poor city is have it deformed I've done before. Points north, south, east, west on it has pushed in. Andi Stone is still my sea level very goes to level the tie sliver of color above the silver tube. So what I'm going to do now is go back in, force across. Push this in further. - Now , at this point, I am going to stop. I want to bring the camera in closer. So they had to clear a look off how the setting is looking at the moment. So I thought, See this ring closer to the camera so that I can refresh it will go in and out of focus camera tries to catch up. Even the best macro lenses will do this. Unfortunately, no matter. Chyna's Wells number things that it's trying to focus on, but I don't see it. I move it about that that wall is now the world judo. Top of it is now pushed, uh, father onto stone on See my scrim. Well, back in focus. We're going. I remember silver around the outside and you can also see I hope this stuff just like over it certainly feels are smoother on a completely fresh but nice and nice and neat up against stay. However, as I could get my head closer, I can see um, looking down that angle that there is still, ever since a light a match of fracture millimeters distance between us, the inside of the Civil War on the top of the stone. So what I'm going to do, it's got the best pusher again and go around mawr. I'm actually want that. I'm going to say before I do this, if you find that you're no really getting anywhere, there's there's two things 1st 1 type, persevering for a while because you are going to have to get the hang of just how much pressure you've got to put on the sterling silver compared to find silver to go to get the wall pushed on. But the other thing is that you could do. We should have the file a little bit more filing around the edge here because the other thing that people sometimes do when the first learning how to do these settings is not removed quite enough material around the top. Most don't be afraid to go back and file a little bit more picked up the direct FARC's. I find this little bit Jennifer. This helps. You can't go like that because the ring shank is in the way. You feel fighting attached to the ring clump. But what you can do it. I'm not gonna do it on this works. I don't need to. But if I did, I could think was damage to the top of the war. I could think it out too much. We just go around just a little bit and sweet, rather top so holding file about, uh, 60 degrees to the top of the war on, just sweep around the top. Take it slowly so that your file is that so. I feel very unlikely to slip and grow across the top of the stone, but you might find that you have to move a little bit more metal so that it's enough to push over. Andi, you will get a lot more confident with how much farther you need to do around the top. The more of these you do. Sure. I said before on video class is half of this crisis is getting to know what you can get away with with both the tools and the materials. And this really is a case in point. So I'm going to go around again on this. Thomas's starting at head on to the war. I'm going to start a 45 degree angle on, Go around again. I'm gonna go around or Southeast wants to start with the Stones not going to move at this point, but it just I find this is a habit of plotting to on, and it helps me keep truck off where I pushed him. Where I haven't thinking. Sam almost took stone. I'm not I'm not touching it. I'm almost some top of it. I can see already. What? You might not have seen the camera. I also used to looking out this The civil War has really gone. No, I sleep up against the stone places I've pushed. Like I said, Good for you, Trump keeps of you. Keep your focus and see what I'm doing at the same time. Quite a challenge for me. Um, especially when this area that you can see it's only about six by six. Believing that about six into me to something like that is what big it'll so that I think he's really nicely pushed in such times. Change over to the burn. Isha she's here on, Just like with a setting. I'm going to go around. You work on one little bits of time, and this helps to remove any marks left by the best pusher and also helps to push the top of the wall really nice and flush up against the top of stone. Now you could leave it with the burnish finish, but I am going to show you one more thing. That's a circum wheel in the pendant drill so you could see what kind of fish that can give as well. Okay, so that is a really nicely set stone. Such couldn't even like that. Maybe giveth e ring shank, bit more polish, regular polishing coughs. But let's have a look about what? They're certain wheels due to this setting right? Then put circum wheel in my pendant drill on this system. Once I showed you earlier that's already being used a fab it and worn down quite a way that doesn't distract camera. What I'm going to do is just use ever so gently quite slowly around the top. I'm going to be focusing on that. I m gold silver around the outside. I'm not going to be taking it onto the stone. That's very important. Don't take time to Stone on. May be practice with silicon. Will Hendon real on other things first, before you have a go at this. So here we go very lightly. I think that's enough. You can see I think maybe ever bring it back into your camera. You can see maybe it off. Just are the stone that's just from the The disc gets worn off. Just clean off with pink. So we need to. So she is stone, uh, have a proper lucky touch. So that has given a really nice smooth I'm a setting finish around the top. Ondas has always also not just taking out. Ah, a couple of marks that the battleship hadn't taken out. So that's that's and I think bonus. So you can either leave it like that if indeed you you do want to try it dependent drills. Well, I can leave it like that Or once it Now that he has got having really, really nicely smoothly Onda No marks left a tall you could if you wanted to go back to banish it and just run the battleship well, lightly around the top of setting Just take it Never was shine bright, burnished, shine around You're staying So that is now one finished ring That's a close ally of it it 15. Tube Set Ring - final thoughts: So that's one beautiful first Garnett set in a smooth contemporary setting, a gorgeous ring, Even if I do say so myself. This ring star works really well for such a stacking rings, too. As you can see from the examples here, these will be set really periodo amethyst, Andi I a light as the settings or so widget on the top of the rings. They were thou adjacent dreams to tuck nicely underneath as long as you make sure that the rings are made from the same wire. If you have thicker rings next to so setting, it won't be a talk underneath. Other rings won't sit flush up against each other, which is ideally how you want. So humans we warm chief settings can be used on a wide variety of different jewelry designs , of course, not just on rings. So there will be more classes filmed using this technique to make sure that you don't miss out on the click on the button to follow me as well that you will get notification of all future classes. But now they thank you for watching 16. Tube Set Ring bonus - setting an oversized stone: I've just been cutting a seat into this length of tube for this lovely five millimeter at Marine Faceted Stone For another video class, Andi, I had to do a little bit extra to the tube to the but with the bursts. Then I did in a this class in the first class. Um, on the reason for that is such the stone wasn't actually five millimeters. It was closer to 5.2 millimeters in diameter. As you saw in the earliest section this feel. So I talk about size of the stones, choosing the best stone, the stones, you by about your stones, you might requests that you are buying put the ordering for, say, four millimeters. But they could be anything from 3.8 up by before maybe 4.2 millimeters in diameter. And that was the case with the batch off Marine. Since I bought, they were coupling there that were all my spying on five millimeters. They would actually have bean about a choice for doing a tube setting because they would have fitted perfectly with five millimeter round and sunsetting burgers. I've got here with the pinky right and sue them. Um However, I decided to make life a little bit too difficult for myself on choose one that was closer to 5.2 millimeters in diameter so that I could show you another trick. If I had had a 5.2 millimeter burr, then that would have made life a lot easier. But I didn't. I could have waited and bought one, but I said I wanted to show you this trick. I did. However, I do, however, have a 5.5 round burr. So what I did was after starting with the five millimeter round burr swapping over to the five Minutes Stone, sitting back for a little bit she saw. Yet I then puts the 5.5 millimeter burning to make the top of the tube the inside the tube with wider to accommodate that wider girdle. And the reason I could do this is that although this is 5.5, its widest point at some point to go closer to the bottom of the boat, which I'm holding at the top, um, but here, further towards a section here it decreases to five foot. Fall 5.35 point two. I've got one, and I guess smaller stores. You get to the tip here. So what I did was Let's take that stone out now, using my trusting that he needed to do that. What I did was for this one in very gently. I took it just a little bit. Just one step the pedal to take it in a little bit further. I checked with Stone. No, you need do that until the girdle just starts to sitting and you know, then it's but it's just sitting, and you haven't risked making the stone setting too wide at the top. You don't want to go with wide as 5.5, because then the stone would slip about. At that point, I changed back to the stone sitting birth on birding further with the stone setting back. You see that to allow the stone to settle for a bit further because once the girl starts to fit in with, Pavilion isn't as wide as the girdle, so it didn't need to be 5.2 along the way down just 5.2 up to accommodate the girdle. So I need to open up the bottom a little bit better with stone setting birth to allow stone to sit little bit deeper down on the reason I changed the stone setting birth wrong and just keep on doing it with one of the round was it. I wanted to make use of the shape off the bird. That shape of the Burt would allow the stone to sitting. That's a really nice level state. That's why I wanted to change that to that. So that's my extra chip for you. If you have a stone, it's a little bit too big. Maybe you have to set it because it's for a commission or for present. You have to set it before you can buy a bird that it's the perfect site. Or maybe you can't get a bird that is really the perfect size. Then use a birth that is a little bit bigger and where it's just part of the way in stopping and checking frequently to see whether you're stone is going to fit in. The soon to of stone starts to fit in. Then take that burn out what you might need to do after doing a little bit too. Mawr blurring with so setting birth is changed back to this one just a little bit and keep going backwards. Or forwards between the Children sometimes just a little bit of time until the Stones six in perfectly without making the top two big. So for this stones, it's really nicely in its a nice level. Andi theme table is so peeping out a little bit, it's just about level with the top of the tube, So the next stage is cutting off the tube and finishing off suffering.
