1. Introduction: Working is a mistake that
I'm guilty of doing. And in my case, everything changed when I
read this book right here, the four hour work week. Now, I want you to
imagine that a Genie came some sort of
good came and he told you that you can only spend 4 hours per week working
on your passion, on your project,
on your mission, whatever you're working towards. I can guarantee you that
during these 4 hours during these only 4 hours per
week that you would spend, right, the tasks that you would perform would be
completely different than the task you're
performing on an everyday basis to
your work right now. And this is a huge mistake. Now, in this short course
presented to you right here, we're going to be discussing
why overworking is a myth, how to tackle overworking, by being more productive, by leveraging your work, by focusing on quality
rather than quantity. And finally, the difference
between being creative, being productive, and being creative while being productive. This course right here,
the short course right here is an amazing way to start your year and just
completely have a paradigm shift in your
mind regarding overworking, and I really encourage
you to check it out. I'm going to see you
inside the lesson.
2. Breaking the Overwork Myth: In this first lesson,
again, in which we're analyzing the myth of overwork, redefining success through
creativity and focus. So in today's fast
paced world, right, we often equate success with long hours and
relentless effort, and that's completely
wrong, right? This outdated mindset can lead to burnout and
diminished creativity. So this presentation right here challenges the myth of overwork, exploring how we can achieve greater success by prioritizing
quality over quantity, fostering creativity, and
focusing on high impact work. That's what we're
analyzing in this lesson. So in general, there's a huge trap going on these
days around overworking. People think that
overworking is cool, and it's actually encouraged through this new metal we live in that overworking school, being productive
and busy school, but it's completely
different to be productive and to be busy. So the first point here is that overwork has become
a status symbol. So again, it is often
celebrated as a badge of honor, mistakenly equaling long hours with dedication and achievement, which, of course, are
not proportional. Long hours of work do not always come with
achievement, right? On top of that, overwork
is counterproductive. This mindset leads to burnout,
diminished creativity, and poor quality of work,
ultimately hindering success. And again, there's
a big difference between being busy
and being productive. We stated this in
the previous slide of this lecture right here. There's a huge
difference between being busy and being productive. And in next slides of
this presentation, we're going to be analyzing
how sometimes people mask problems of their lives
by appearing to be busy, but this is completely
counterproductive, right? So again, this is
often overlooked in the pursuit of
doing more, right? Here's a dark side of overwork. Overwork often becomes a way to avoid personal responsibilities
or challenges, right? And you might even find this
to be true in your case. Sometimes, for example, I catch myself overworking, right? In order to avoid some other
personal, for example, issues or
responsibilities that I might be having and I just
don't want to tackle. So I put work in front of them and I focus on work, right? So this creates, again, a
cycle of avoidance and stress. On top of that, overworking, fun enough, has
diminishing returns. So again, this
obsession with working longer hours leads
to a point where more time invested produces increasingly poorer
results, right? And finally, you
get to sacrifice quality when you overwork. So again, a culture
that prioritizes quantity over quality
fosters inefficiency, right, and compromises
the overall value of the work produced. Those are the dark
sides of over working. So how do we again,
override overworking, and how do we take
overworking out of the equation of our lives
by redefining productivity? All right, how do we do that?
We do this by maximizing the efficiency during
the working hours that we choose to
work on, right? By optimizing creativity, we also foster innovating thinking, and that's the
difference again between productivity and creativity, and we'll be analyzing
further on down the line. Again, we over focus on
quality rather than quantity, and we prioritize excellence in our output rather than
volume of our output, and we focus on high
impact outcomes. Those are the four ways to
redefine productivity and stop overworking that
leads to poor results. So what is the power
of focused work, right? I want you
to imagine this. Imagine working just 4 hours. And I'm not talking
about 4 hours per day. Imagine working just
4 hours per week. If someone told you that all you can do is work 4 hours per week, wouldn't your actions
be completely different rather
than the actions you're taking now in your work? If you only had 4 hours
to work per week, I can guarantee you
that every second, every minute that
you got to work, you would be 100%
focused, right? And you would tackle
the correct tasks. Right? When you were working
just 4 hours per week, because that's just how
our brain works, right? We deliver results based on
the timeframe that we set. And if we do not
have a set timeframe for the work that
we want to achieve, yes, well, this work
can take us forever, and usually it isn't
even delivered. That's why every
essay on universities or schools has a
deadline, right? So imagine this. 4 hours of focus can actually produce
higher quality results than 12 hours of
scattered effort, right? So those are, again, 8 hours completely lost, 8 hours of scattered
effort completely lost. You can also prioritize
high impact task. That's what you would
do if you only had 4 hours per week to
work on your task. So again, if you prioritize activities that create
the most value, you will see an increased
outcome in your work. And activities that
create the most value in general are creative processes, processes that lead
to an outcome, for example, right, and productive processes
that lead to an outcome. For example, recording a video
is a productive process. Journaling is not a
productive process, right, because you're not creating something you are
organizing your thoughts, and down the line, it
might help you create, but journaling by itself is not a creative,
productive process. You can also find
creative solution. So again, focused work allows for innovative
problem solving. So those are some of the
perks of focused work. So this is like the
creativity parading. I want you to imagine that you have a well
rested mind, right? Creativity flourishes
when the brain is given adequate rest
and recovery time. That's why overworking is just generally
speaking, bad for you. Regular sleep patterns
are crucial for maintaining your
creative output. On top of that, a
nourished body, right, a healthy diet and
regular exercise contribute to overall
well being, right? So this in turn fuels creative thinking and
problem solving abilities. Having a well rested mind, having a body that's
filled with vitamins that is you get to work
out, get to exercise. Those are some ways to
boost your creativity, a stress free
environment, right? Reducing the constant stress, this allows your mind
to wander, right, and make unexpected connections, fostering innovation and
fostering original ideas. And if we go back to history, you can see that the biggest
innovations across history, we're talking about Ancien
Greece, we're talking about Ancient Rome. We're
talking about Egypt. These huge innovations,
these huge milestones of humanity were achieved
in periods of peace, in periods of reduced stress, where the minds of these people
got from new connections, right, that were
against the norm and this changed trajectory
of the whole humanity. So you can apply this
principle to your life. Now, a free mind from overwork is more
capable of generating fresh perspectives
and approaching challenges with renewed energy. That's very, very
important, right? So how do we foster a
creative lifestyle, okay? So obviously, this is
not Ancient Greece, this is not Ancient Rome, how can you apply
these principles today or tomorrow to your
everyday lives? Those are four ways to
foster a creative lifestyle. So regular walks, for example, can definitely boost creative
thinking up to 60%, right? Back in the day when I was in med school and I was also
launching my business, I would walk for 1 hour
every single day, right? And this is evidence based. Regular walks allows the mind to wander and make
new connections, and new neural connections are what we're aiming
for here, right? Exercising. Physical activity
also increases blood flow to the brain and enhancing cognitive function
and creativity. It also reduces stress
and improves your mood. Socializing is also
an amazing way to foster a creative lifestyle and help your brain from
these new neural connections. So interacting with others exposes us to diverse
perspectives, sparkling new ideas, and creative solutions to
our problems, right? Sleeping obviously, it's
extremely important. Quality sleeping is crucial for memory consolidation and
creative problem solving. It allows the brain to
make novel connections between seemingly
unrelated concepts. And those again, connections
that are out of the box. This is what we discuss about when talking about
thinking out of the box. Imagine you get to socialize and receive new datasets
from new people. You get to work out and increase blood flow to the brain, right? And also, you practice
discipline by working out. You also get to walk,
and those walks usually also act as
meditation for some people, and you also get to sleep. Those are just four amazing ways to foster a creative lifestyle. So how do we break the
societal narrative? The first thing we should
do about overworking, to break the societal narrative of overworking is to
recognize the myth. So acknowledge that the
glorification of overwork is deeply ingrained in
societal values, right? You would say we could say that this is a
norm, for example, a scio created just
to have people working and working working without seeing
exponential results. Best of cases, you will see
linear results if you're just only over working, right? You can challenge
success stories, right? Question narratives
that glamorize relentless effort
without context, right? Embrace recovery, understand
the importance of rest and reflection in
achieving impactful results. Finally, develop a new mindset
that values creativity and focus work over long
hours of robotic work. That's the most important
thing when we're we're going to be talking about creativity, right, rather than
just productivity. Right? So let's take this case study right here to prove the impact
of focus work. We got person A and person B. Person A is the overwer, right? He works 12 hours per day, he earns $50,000 a year, and he experiences burnout
and stress, right? Person B is a focused worker. He works 1 hour
per day and earns $5,000,000 per year and
enjoys his work life balance. Do you think that
this is possible? Well, the answer is that,
yes, it is possible, and you probably
know many people that belong in the
category of person A, so overwers they work so
many hours per day. And Have a normal to good
salary per year, but you also pretty much know
that person B also exists, someone that works just
1 hour per day, right? Someone that has a team, someone that has a
business, right, and earns 5 million per year and enjoys his
work life balance. Both of these persons exist. The key difference
here lies in skill, leverage and understanding,
not time invested. You're not getting paid based on the amount of time that
you invest in your work. You're getting paid
based on your skill, your leverage, your
understanding, and your output in this work. So this again, to this
case study illustrates how focused high
leverage work can create disproportionate outcomes compared to prolonged
effort, right? Key here, the key word
here is leveraged work. Leverage takes your time out of the equation of your salary
and your productivity and helps you utilize other people other tools by creating
systems and businesses to just exponentially increase your
output without needing to put in the proportional amount of time to increase
your output, right? So this is the power of
skill and leverage, right? And it's analyzed into
these four points. So again, in order to
increase your skill, in order to increase
your leverage, you need to be a
strategic thinker. Just like in chess, people not only are high
levels of chess players, these people do not only
think of the next move, they think ten
moves ahead, right? So you need to plan for maximum efficiency when you're tackling just this new concept of proactivity that
we're discussing in the scores right here, right? You need to keep
developing your skills to continuously improve
your expertise. You also need high
leverage activities to focus on impactful tasks
that will multiply or exponentially grow
your output without having without you needing
to put in that much input. Those are leverage activities. For example, hiring people
is a leveraged activity, and this will lead into
disproportionate outcomes, right, exponential
results, pretty much. So how do we reframe success? The first way to reframe success is to understand
these three key principles. In my opinion, those are the three things that
everyone should strive for. The first one is value creation, and success generating income, impacting people is tightly associated with value creation. Again, success is defined by the value and impact of what you create not by the number of hours that you
have worked, right? Someone could spend 20 hours
cutting a tree down and he won't get paid or he will be paid way less
than a businessman, for example, that just woke
up and checked his phone and has his business working that has automatically
by leverage, impacted tens of thousands of people across
the whole world. So you need to
focus on producing meaningful results
that the market absorbs and contribute to your goals while
benefiting others. On top of that, you need to be intentionally
creative, right? I want you to shift
from a mindset of overwork to one of
intentional creativity. So this approach ensures
sustainable growth and innovation in your personal
and professional life. Finally, you need to be focusing also on long
term fulfillment. You need to prioritize quality over quantity that leads to
greater job satisfaction, improved work life balance, and sustained achievement
over time, right? You probably have heard
of the difference between short term pleasure
and long term satisfaction, producing work that is mostly
quantitative rather than of high quality
is the equivalent in this productive space
of focusing on short term, again, relief rather than long
term satisfaction, right? So this right here is the
quality, quality balance. You need to continuously
be improving by refining approaches
based on your outcomes, by analyzing your outcomes, changing the strategic approach that you have in play, right? You need to be efficient
while executing and optimizing processes
for best results, planning strategically
while identifying high impact activities that
you could be focusing on. And finally, focusing on excellence in every single
task of yours, right? This right here is
the creativity, productivity nexus, right? And what it pretty much what
we're going to be aiming in the next minutes of the
session right here is to change your paradigm between
creativity and productivity. So as we discussed about, the well rested mind is
more capable of producing innovative ideas
and solutions than a stressed mind that is
not well rested, right? A creative problem solving person leads to more
efficient work processes. So in general, when
someone is creative and is able to have
problem solving skills, it will help in more
efficient work output. Finally, the combination of creativity and
productivity drives rapid personal and
professional development. So someone can be creative without being productive and someone can be productive
without being creative. But both of these cases
aren't as strong, right, as someone being both productive and creative, right? This criteria is the
cost of overwork. So in general, it
costs 50 billion, right, in annual economic cost, and this is the
estimated annual cost of workplace workplace stress
to the US economy, right? On top of that, we have
120,000 deaths per year, which are work
related stress deaths just in the US annually. And, of course, a 50%
productivity loss, which is the percentage of
productivity loss due to stress related
presentism, right? What are the benefits
of rest and recovery? So first of all, we have
enhanced creativity. Again, regular breaks and adequate rest allows the mind
to make new connections, fostering innovative thinking and problem solving abilities. We have improved focus when you're rested and you have
recovered from your work. So again, well
rested individuals demonstrate better concentration
and attention to detail, leading to higher
quality work output. We also get better
decision making. And at the end of the
day, our lives are just a series of consecutive decisions
that we make every day. You're called to make decisions based on habits
that you have formed, which are not that active, but sometimes probably five
to ten times per week, you get to choose
something that is new and the quality of your
decision making skills will at the end of the
day dictate your life. So refreshed mind is more capable of weighing
options and making sound judgments crucial for effective leadership
and personal growth. On top of that, we have
increased productivity. So contrary to popular belief, taking regular
breaks and ensuring proper rest can significantly boost overall productivity
and efficiency. And we drove this point home, I think from this
side right here, which was the cost
again of overwork. So this is how we battle the
cost of overwork, right? By being rested and recovered. So how do we design a creativity
friendly environment? So the first thing you
can do is obviously have a collaborative
collaborative space to work with someone else. So include areas that facilitate teamwork
and idea sharing. You have quiet zones, right? So designated areas for deep focus and
uninterrupted work. And this doesn't need to be
at your place, at your house. This could be on different
locations of your city, right? By incorporating nature
elements in your work, right, incorporate plants,
natural light to reduce stress and boost
the mood of your work. And finally, a flexible
workspace by creating an adaptive work
area that allows for move different
working positions. This is also a tip to design a creativity, again,
friendly environment. What is the role of
technology in balanced work? Because we talked about, again, having some natural aspects in your work zone, but at
the end of the day, we live in an age in
which technology has boosted the
productivity of pretty much every market around. And there is definitely room for technology to come
and help us in balancing work and
not overworking. So we have multiple
productivity tools, right? You can utilize
apps and software that helps streamline tasks, manage time effectively, and
reduce unnecessary workload. This is definitely possible. You can also a digital detox. So sometimes, obviously, yes, technology is a tool that can assist you
in your productivity, but many times it
can also decrease your productivity by being by reducing your
attention span, right? So you can implement regular periods of
disconnection from digital devices to allow for mental rest, creative thinking. And finally, AI
artificial intelligence is an amazing way
to assist you in your everyday life and
your productive workload by leveraging
artificial intelligence to handle routine tasks, for example,
appointment setting, your calendars, writing
some emails, right? You can free up time for high value creative work,
right, give an example, something one thing that I
love to do with JBT is to dictate to JGBTi the response that I would give to an email, give Jug PT the basic outline of the response that I wanted to again compose and then paste the email that
I got previously. So the email that I
get to answer now, and then just tell JGBT Hey, just write me a grammatically correct answer to this email by driving the points that I elaborated on that I
dictated to you, right? And it's just an
amazing way to speed up your email process while
still sounding professional. So Sleep. We talked about sleep. There's a huge impact
of sleep in creativity. The first one is
memory consolidation. So as we talked
about, during sleep, the brain processes and
consolidates information from the day essential for learning and problem solving.
You need to be sleeping. On top of that, sleep is a key factor for
emotional regulation. Adequate sleep helps
maintain emotional balance, which is crucial for
managing stress and fostering a positive
mindset. Sleep also Is a key factor of
cognitive function, well rested individuals so
improved cognitive abilities, including better decision
making and creative thinking. Finally, sleep also allows the body to repair
and rejuvenate, ensuring optimal physical health for peak performance, right? Talked about sleep. Now it's time to talk about
strategic breaks. So you can definitely
take some breaks during your everyday task. You can have coffee breaks,
for example, which are short, regular breaks that you
get to refresh the mind, right, and boost productivity. You can do nature walks, right? They brief outdoor excursions can reduce stress and
enhance your creativity. You can have mindfulness
moments with short meditation sessions that can improve focus
and mental clarity. And finally, some
desk stretches. Quick stretching
routines can alleviate physical tension and
boost your energy, right? So how do we cultivate a
growth mindset, right? You can celebrate
other successes, for example, you can
find inspiration in Peers achievement. This is another way to boost
your creativity to boost your productivity with just
some simple mindset shifts. You can learn from criticism rather than taking
it personally. Use feedback for
your improvement. You also embrace challenges, view obstacles that all of us have in our everyday
lives as opportunities, and finally, be a
lifelong learner, embrace lifelong education. Hobbies also play a
very important role battling over working, right? For stress relief, while engaging in enjoyable activities
outside of your work, this helps reduce stress
and it prevents workout. You can also develop skills, so hobbies develop can
help develop new skills that can indirectly benefit
your professional life. Finally, you can also use
creative stimulation. Pursuing diverse interests can spark new ideas and
approaches in your work. And this is the value
of diverse experiences. Those are just some diverse
experiences that you can apply to your life, again, not only to battle over work, but just to add a creative
layer in your everyday life. So you can try volunteering, for example, giving
back to the community. You can try networking, interacting with people
from various backgrounds that can provide
fresh insights and potential collaborations
that can boost your creativity and efficiency
in the long run, right? You can learn new skills. Right? You can acquire
diverse skills, even if unrelated to
your primary work. Again, forming those
new neural connections will add a layer of excitement
in your everyday life. Finally, you can
also travel, right, expose yourself to new countries and environments that can broaden your perspective and
inspire innovative thinking. Another key thing
here is the role of physical t. Physical activity
and just being active, having an active life, working out, going for jobs, it's one of the most
important things and the best things you
can do to your body, as well as for your mind. So there are huge benefits
for physical activity. I have been practicing
physical activity in my everyday life since pretty much a baby since being a baby, since
being a kid, right? And I can guarantee that
those points absolutely work. So physical activity improves
cognitive function, right? Regular exercise
improves memory, focus, and overall brain. It reduces your stress, so it helps you manage
stress and anxiety levels. It boosts your energy as counterintuitive
as this may seem, physical activity and
investing more energy right into getting physical will
actually boost your energy, exercise, increases
energy levels, and it reduces fatigue. So, trust me, even if you
come back from your work, being tired, being exhausted, being stressed,
grabbing some weights or going for a run will
definitely help you out. And of course, physical activity also enhances creative
thinking, right, so it can enhance creative
problem solving abilities. Also a huge thing here
is part of saying no. So a mentor of mine
actually told me that, what will differentiate you
from being successful or not is how many consecutive nos you can say to activities, ideas, and things that deviate
from your path, right? So declining non essential commitments actually
allows you to focus on high priority tasks and professional
well being, right? Saying no to
overwhelming requests helps maintain a healthy
work life balance and reduces stress. On top of that, by
limited commitments, right, you can
dictate more energy. You can dedicate more
energy to producing high quality work in your
core responsibilities. And obviously, setting
boundaries demonstrates self respect and helping others understand your
priorities and values. Saying no is a very
powerful thing that everyone shall practice if you wish to achieve a more
creative and productive life without having to
overwork, right? So having passion projects inside or outside your work,
it's extremely important. I personally have had passion
projects my whole life, again, in parallel to my
studies as a medical student. And those are just
some things that you can those passion projects, those side hustles, if you will, or passion projects
can help you out. So the first thing is
motivational boost. Working on projects
you're passionate about, can we ignite your enthusiasm for work and life in general? Passion projects
also often lead to acquiring new skills that can benefit your
professional lives. On top of that, these
projects provide a space for unbridled creativity which can spill over into your main work. So, again, we're not
talking about just passion projects
inside your work. We're talking about
passion projects additionally to your work or
in parallel to your work. You don't need to do anything
with your main work. Right? And that's also
the power of mindfulness, being a mindful individual, journaling, noting down
things about your life. And this also comes under the umbrella of strategic
thinking, right? If we want long term
results, right? And if we want to be again, generating and
designing a lifestyle for our future reelves, we
need to be mindful, right? So while being mindful, you manage to
reduce your stress. Regular mindfulness practice can significantly lower
stress levels and improve overall well being. On top of that,
mindfulness techniques, enhance concentration
and attention Bam leading to more efficient work. Mindfulness also helps
in managing emotions effectively crucial for maintaining professional
relationships. On top of that, a mindful
approach can lead to more innovative problem
solving and idea generation. And you can see how
many times we have focused on the fact that Again, creative problem
solving skills are of utmost importance if you want to break from the
cycle of over working. You need to be creative and in order to foster
this creativity, you must be stress free, relaxed, have adequate sleep and being a mindful
individual, right? So the importance of work
life integration, right? In general, regarding
the personal values, it aligns actions with
your beliefs, right? You need to be allocating
your time effectively, blending work with
personal life, and balancing all
aspects of your life. So what are the key takeaways
of this lecture right here? What are the things that
you need to remember to digest information that I just delivered to you in this
lecture right here? The first key takeaway is obviously that overworking
is a trap, right? You need to recognize
that overwork diminishes both productivity
and creativity, leading to burnout and poor
quality output, right? Also, we discussed about how creativity requires care, right? Nurture creativity through rest, proper nourishment, and
entertaining mental clarity. We also discussed about
quality over quantity. Focused, high quality work
is far more effective than long hours of
unfocused effort, right? You also need to
redefine success, shift your definition of success
to prioritize impact and value creation over mere
effort or hours required. So finally, before we're done with this short
course right here, those are some actionable steps that you can take
in order to make the most out of the
datasets that are delivered in this
again, course, right? So first of all,
audit your work, identify areas where
you can replace quantity with quality
in your daily tasks. Also, incorporate creative
habits in your work, integrate activities like
walking, journaling, and exercising into your
routine to foster creativity. Set work boundaries, right, establish clear
boundaries for work hours to ensure sufficient
rest and recovery time. And finally, evaluate impact, regularly assess your work
for its impact and value, and just not just the
time you spent on it. Again, thank you very much for
sticking up on the course, you can check out the other courses that
I have in my profile. If you enjoy this one, I'm going to see you
in the next one.
