1. Introduction: Hey friends. I'm Lgobanitz, independent votical artist and illustrator. For many years, I've been illustrating my life in Sketchbooks and our journals. I prefer homemade sketchbooks that I see myself. I like when a sketch book consists of different types of paper. Good watercolor paper, smooth paper for graphics. A couple of sheets of black paper, and of course, brown craft paper. Yes, one day, brown craft paper became a creative discovery and inspiration for me. I want to share with you why I love to draw on it so much and included in almost every sketchbook, I will tell you it's basic properties and difference from white paper. Show my drawing techniques and tricks learning by practicing. We will draw some simple but spectacular illustrations. If you have never used brown craft paper in your art practice, then after this video, your creative work will never be the same. If you're an experienced artist who loves experiments, I hope you find some new ideas and inspiration in this video. Let's get started. 2. Class Project Overview: What to Expect: About the class project. We will draw four illustrations during the class. The main purpose of the exercises is to try as much ways to draw and paint on brown craft paper as possible. The first illustration will focus on experimenting with different techniques to depict white, white color on tint paper always looks beautiful. Then we'll explore colors, work with black, and try combining different mediums. All the tutorials are beginner friendly with step by step guidance. The videos are in real time, not speed up, so you are welcome to grab your supplies and draw along with me. Don't forget when you've completed the illustration. To upload it as a class project, I would love to see your work and give feedback. 3. Materials: Paper Bag, Wrapping Paper, and Art Supplies: The materials we need paper. Of course, there are brown craft paper albums, they come in different sizes. A 43, there is craft paper in large sheets. It is also used as wrapping paper. All of these can be used for this tutorial. Personally, I most often use paper bags, cutting them inter sheets. What else do we need paints? I am a crazy watercolor lover. I will paint with watercolors, but gouache or acrylic paints are also great. In this case, there is not much difference. Colored pencils will also come in handy. A special role is played by a white pencil. A little later, I will talk about this in details. Soft graphite pencil brushes, water white gache acrylic markers. I will show you how to draw with them. They cover any surface, but if you haven't them, don't worry. You can easily replace them with paints. 4. Illustration 1: Bouquet of Delicate White Flowers: The main feature of any tinted paper, including brown craft paper, is the fact that it is fashionable to draw on it with white. When we draw on white paper, the lightest tone is the tone of the paper. Everything we draw is darker than the tone of the paper. When we paint or draw on tinted paper, we can paint both darker or lighter. I'd like to show you different ways of drawing with white as well as with colored pencils and paints using these beautiful flowers. As an example, we will use different techniques. One illustration, let me zoom in so you can see it better. Well, I will draw such flowers. I met them in the mountains, in the forest, and then found out that these are wild anemones. Can you imagine I will attach these 40 references to the lesson. First, I take a white pencil. White pencils come in different quality. There are chalk, there are watercolors. You will do the main things that you like, the feeling of the pencil touching the paper. Let's start by drawing a simple flower. I look at the photo and draw the petals like this. I will paint the heart of the flower with watercolor. Of course, it's possible to do with a pencil. Two is just my task for now, is to show you different techniques. To be honest, in my personal practice, I like combined materials. We do not see the heart completely. Just a little bit. Mm hmm. And the stem. You know, I'd like to zoom in it even more. Mm hmm. Yep. That's better. When drawing with colored pencils, do not forget that you can make colored transitions. I started with the light sheet and move on to the darker sheets. Well, everything seems to be clear and understandable at this stage, right? Let's draw another flower. It will be turned to us in our direction. I place it a little lower than the previous one. Carefully look at the reference phota and try to repeat the shape of the petals. Mm hmm. I'm carefully feeling inside. I paint the middle of the flower again with watercolor saturated little water in the brush and the stem colored pencils. And let's add leaves here. Mm hmm. Well, two flowers are done. I hope you don't have any problem with them. For the next step, I need white gash. I'll put it here so you can see it. Let's draw the third flower with gah. Gah is an Opa medium. I can paint on top of the pencil drawing first petal. Second, you see the third flower has a different situation. It is more contrasting. Mm Hmm. And one more petal behind the heart. Mm Hmm. Done. And the flower stem leaves. Sometimes I leave some details drawing only outline just for variety. Mm hmm. Now I'm drawing the separate green leaf. The leaves on the phota have a rather complex or night shape. I simplified it slightly, you can draw it with one pencil, one color or more picturesque using different shades of green. As you like, I will paint second leaf. If you paint like me with watercolor, then try not to add too much water. After all, brown craft paper does not like water. We need to make watercolor opaque. Just try to feel the right condition of the paints to paint. Comfortable to not wait too long till the paint will dry out and so on. Just find your way to paint on brown craft paper. Let's move on to the next step at the application. I leave the paint to dry and take a separate piece of the white paper. I will draw a couple of flowers first with the graffite pencil, and then I cut them out. Flowers should be the same size as the previous ones, or a little bit bigger. Mm hmm. And let the second one be sideways to us. Mm hmm. Now I need scissors and carefully cut them out. Any application looks pretty cool on craft paper. Moreover, it can be either from a white paper, as it is now colored, or painted paper. I often paint some object or detail with watercolor, cut it out, and glue on an illustration, or on a sketch. In my opinion, there are some special charm in the application on craft paper. Flowers can be not only white, they can be any color. I talk in detail and show many examples of cut out details on illustrations in my skill share class, Sustainable sketchbook. In addition, there is a lot of information on how to see a sketch book for yourself or how to draw on brown craft paper and about sketching in general. So take a look if you are interested in the link should be in the description. The one flower is done now the second. Mm hmm. So let's come back to our illustration. I'm going to glue these cut out flowers here, right on top of stems and leaves like this. Mm hmm. I need a glue stick. I am gluing carefully every petal, let it be placed like this. Mm, mm. And the second one right on top of the greenery. Mm hm. It left to paint the hearts of these flowers. Look what we've got. Flowers have different situation and brightness drawn with a white pencil. They are pale and slightly transparent. The boundaries are soft. The flower that is painted with a gas is brighter and more contrasting. The cut out flowers are the most white and contrasting. I'm trying to create the feeling that the heart of the flower is fluffy. Let's take white gus and add some details. Let it be the bud one more and stems. I'll take a darker shade of green. And the little leaves, Mm hmm, Mm hm. And I will also draw stems of the buds. And here now I take the acrylic marker. I have it in the color of cream brule or baked milk, something like that, Not bright white, creamy. And add some more details or even another flower. The same can be done not with an acrylic marker but with gas or don't be done at all. That's okay. Just as decorative elements, this stem is really noticeable, it's somewhere behind. Mm hmm. And let's write that these flowers are a wild anemones. Well, at the first illustration is done once again, let me articulate what we have done. The main focus is on white flowers. Absolutely everything that is drawing with white tinted paper looks awesome. Flowers in the background have a pal tone. Flowers painted with white gash and acrylic marker are a little brighter and more saturated. These are two flowers that cut out from white paper. This variation in while saturation gives a sense of depth and volume. We explored how to draw with colored pencils, used different shades of green. This also helps to create a sense of flavoring and abundance of greenery. Well, let's move on and pay more attention to paints. 5. Bases for the Next Three Illustrations: The plan is this. We will first create three painted bases. Then when they dry completely, we will bring each one to the final illustration. To get started, just think of your favorite colors. Let's just paint some colored stripes. I often use this technique in a sketch book in order to put an inscription there. Words, for example, that I want to keep to myself. Let me put my pencils away so you can see the color palette better. I'll start with lemon yellow. When we paint on brown rat paper with watercolor, we should always remember that it is better to take a little water. Gouache and acrylic techniques do not involve much water themselves. Watercolor is often watery. We need a saturated paint solution where there is a lot of pigment and a little water. Pay attention how long I bathe the brush in the paint. I'm going to paint five stripes. Keeping that in mind as I work out where to place the first stripe. I put the brush on its side and paint the stripe. Mm hmm. Let the next one be red. I need a rich color. The stripes can be of the same color. Can be white, black, whatever color you like. Mm hmm. No covering colors are great for painting on brown craft paper. Surely you know that watercolor paints may be a Pac or transparent pass convenient for painting on tinted paper. The next one is white and let the last stripe be green. Such a bright, juicy, spring green color, again, it doesn't matter which color you use. The task now is to understand to feel the paint, when consistency is suitable, and how to combine different art materials. Okay, leave it to dry. We need the stripes to dry completely. For the next sketch, I need white. Gosh, remember, any object painted with white on brown paper looks pretty good. I will paint for white ovals. They will be the basis for the group portrait. But please don't be afraid. Everything is pretty understandable and easy. Now I just painting ovals later, I tell you and show of course what to do with them. Mm hmm. The first one, the second, they shouldn't be ideal. They can be any shape, maybe not very even. That's okay. And the last one. Okay, let it dry. On the last illustration, I will also paint a circle. But the dark one, intensively gaining paint. Do not be spared to the brush a little water. A lot of pigment. Remember on brown craft paper, both white and black colors looks really equally cool. Let there be a black circle in the center of the paper. In fact, it's not black for me, but the dark, dark gray and there are such less little spots around. Mm hm. I think that's enough. It's important to stop on time a little bit. Mm hmm. Leave it to dry. Well, now I have to wait until all three of my painted bases dry thoroughly. Let me show them all. Mm hm. They are still wet. In the meantime, I'd like to tell you that I have two skillshare classes, dedicated sketching and our journaling. The first one is sustainable sketchbook create with recycled paper. And learn how to draw, where I talk about how to see a sketchbook from waste materials, including craft paper bags, and how to draw in it. The second class is Five, Wow Creative Ideas to Fill Your Sketchbook, where I show five spectacular and simple ideas of what and how to draw in a sketchbook. There are also many of my classes on mastering watercolor. Please check it out. The link is in the description. 6. Illustration 2: Phrase on a Colored Background: Well, while I was talking, my first illustration dried. I will write here the phrase that I often repeat to myself and to my students about the creative process and the pleasure of it. For the second word, I'll take a different color and material just to show you that you can combine different materials. I use this technique very often to write phrases that I like in my sketch books he almost got in. But that's okay. No big deal. Let's highlight the dots in a different color. Me. I reminded to myself over and over again that creativity, the process, is more important than the final result. 7. Illustration 3: Simple Family Portrait: Moving on, illustration with white gouache. Here I will use a combination of white gash and a soft graphite pencil. Let me zoom in so you can see it better. I will turn the ovals into a page from an old ph album. You can draw your friends, yours, your favorite band. The point is to use these ovals as scenario for drawing portraits. In fact, this is just an example of using a combination of pencil and white gauche. It can be used for a wide variety of purposes. For example, for urban sketching, for inscription for every day, sketching cup of tea, cup of coffee, or breakfast, and so on. It will be the frame with curly elements, you remember, such a frame in old books or films, you know. And here a very sketchy portraits, let it be a woman in a striped top and with curly hair. Mm hmm. Playful pink chicks. And here will be a man with a big nose mustache and glasses. He will have a black T shirt. Mm hmm. And let there be a cute daughter. You know, it's quite difficult to choose family members to draw. As an example, this family is very similar to mine and it is convenient to show the diversity of girls, boys, different ages. You can draw whatever you want. Mm hmm. And let's draw a crown for the girl. She will be a little princess and there will be a nice little boy smiling. That's all this illustration is done. 8. Illustration 4: Starry Night Sky: The last illustration left, I have the black circle here, but it can be any color. I often use this technique to write something in my sketchbook or simply to write a caption for the sketch on the next page. When I put a phrase in my sketchbook, when I write it on paper, it seemed to appropriate to myself to make it my own phrase. I feel it better. Now for simplicity, I will write starry night because it suits the meaning and colors. See how nice the colored background looks on brown paper and then the light letters on top. There is an empty space on the side. So I will draw more stars here. Okay? 9. Final Thoughts: Well, we looked at how black colors looks on brown craft paper. We studied the combination of white gas with the soft graphite pencil. We discovered how to write something inspiring for yourself, for ourself in creative way. And explored different white mediums, creating the beautiful flower illustration. How to create depth and variety in an illustration, guys. But I can't help myself without adding more final details. Justice Sec, I hope you found something useful in this video. Thank you so much for having me. That's a great pleasure for me to share with you my love folk creativity and sketching. Follow me on Instagram and Youtube. I am oligo banitas there. Oh, that's all. Now I'm pretty satisfied with this illustration, so it's time to say goodbye.
