About This Class

Hi there! I'm Kate Amedeo. I am an artist and an illustrator and in this class, I will show you how to sketch painterly animal portraits. We will create painterly artwork of different animals, from cats and dogs to tigers, fishes and birds in one hour or less, thus - Sketching Animals :)

If you have never tried your hand at soft pastels I have another class here on Skillshare that will guide you through the basics. After completing the Soft Pastels for Beginners I will be happy to see you in this class.

Every week I will be adding a new animal to the tutorial here. We will go through all the stages of the artwork, from color selection to drawing, layering and adding color.

Hi there! I'm Kate and I am an artist and an illustrator (and a mom of a wonderful 5-year-old). I live and work in Jelgava, Latvia. 

When I was very young I went to art school but did not finish it as I got really tired of everyone telling me what 'the right way' to do things is. I believe that in art there is no right or wrong :)

I returned to drawing and then painting after I started having problems with my health. Right after I gave birth to my daughter I was in pain 24/7 for over a year and a half when I was finally diagnozed with fibromyalgia (for those of you who are lucky enough not to know what that is, it's an illness that makes your nerves transmit paint which is not there).

1. Intro to sketching animals in soft pastels: Hi there. I'm caked on the dale. I am an illustrator. And the night test? In this class I will show you how to sketch animals and soft pastels. We will be doing different animals in different breeds from horses to dogs, cats, tigers, birds, fish and so on. I will teach you how to sketch an animal so that it represents the likeness within a Knauer . You will not have to spend Asian please on one thing and you will have a beautiful painterly result. As you progress through the glass to hang on the wall I will be doing and you lessen the three weeks you can stay tuned and follow me. I hope that you enjoy the lessons and I really am looking forward to see those results. So don't forget to post gallery here. But for now, I'll see you in the first lesson. I 2. Butterfly Part 1: So in this tutorial we will be drawing a butterfly, so this will be a sketch of a butterfly, and I will be using sandpaper. This is a sandpaper you can find in any D I y store. It's 600 grit, and let's start by selecting the colors for the butterfly. So this is, I think it's called a peacock butterfly, this one, and they're really colorful and beautiful. And I thought that it's going to look amazing on sand its surface. So the difference between sanded surface and, for example, Midtown's paper is that on this one you will get the juiciest color possible. Um, and on the mittens it's not going to be as bright. So let's start with the color choices. So I will definitely need the black. And I think I'm going to use another paper here. So this is the same. Sandpaper is just the one of the sketches that I can use a scrap sheet, and I'm going to add to my brother flight. This is black, so I have, ah, softer kind of darker black, and it's likely later black, then dark ground from the rebel go entities brighter. Brown's from the year I have my reds. This is a darker red, a lighter red. It's kind of bright, right, red to a slightly warmer, orangey red and then into oranges. So I really like these subtle changes in colors here to be using a lot of the front colors . And then here I'm gonna go into my yellows and also some lemon yellow here at the end just to kick up the contrast. And also some very like yellow. Also maybe used a bit a bit of white just in those in some areas, just a bit of weight. Then I see also blues and violence in my butterfly, and I will be using Let's start with this light one. So this is a very light violet and I'm gonna go into this kind of more intense, violent here and also some later blues and more intense blues as well. For the shadows, I will be using a bit of this kind of greyish purple. This is a more intense purple, so these are the basic colors that I will be using for my butterfly. And as you see, we have many colors together, and what we're going to do we're going to leave the layers be will not blend them as much 3. Butterfly Part 2: So next week and start sketching out the butterfly. And for that I will be using neutral colored pencil. And I think this kind of earthy color is going to do. You can use any pencil, any vessel pencil that you have or you can use charcoal pencil. It will do also, but don't use graphite is I'm always saying so. First, What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna decide, right? But they're flies going to be located. So this is going to be the widest. Just then, this distance I'm going to divide it into this is where the body of the butterflies going to be. So I'm gonna sketch that in, and I'm looking at my reference photo, and what I need to do now is I need to decide how big my butterfly my butterflies body actually is. So I have, um, the reference photo on my computer in the approximate size that I have here with paper. So just gonna make it smaller a bit. Sorry. So this is the size so I can measure with my pencil from my computer screen to draw out the butterfly the way I need it. So her body is approximately split in half and pay attention that the wings, they connect to this part of the body, not to the back. Just gonna draw this in. And now let's start drawing in the wings. So first I'm looking at that shape here. There's going to be the head still, and I'm looking at the shape off the wings. So the drawing, it's very important that you do a good drawing here. The wings goes this way and then collect all the way here. I'm not going into these details yet. I'm just drawing in the shape of the wing. He goes straighter and down. So trying to create the mirror image of this wing and looking at my reference photo and I'm looking at this angles how it goes. So it's approximately, like so, so here can correct that spangles Well, and I think that this one looks slightly bigger than that one corrected. So these are the top wings, and now I'm gonna draw out those bottoming so they kind of go under this top wings. I'm looking here at that angle here, so very useful when you're drawing out anything, any subject at all to look at those negative shapes. So I'm looking at this corner here in between the wings, not the wing itself, just to create that right corner. So the swing, it kind of goes slightly below the body here, and this plane does the same thing. 4. Butterfly Part 3: So now that we have our shape in place, it's time to draw in those tournaments on the wings. Pay attention to how the butterfly wings have these kind of I don't know how to call in veins going through them. So we have this bit. This is kind of shape that goes like so on each wing and that from here it goes out and to hear. So this is going to help you create that No realistic butterfly feel, Um, even though it's a sketch, you still have to try and get it resembling the object that you're sketching. So again, I'm drawing out this shape that I see here and from here I'm gonna let down those means that gold across the wing and you already can see that it gives us this feel of a butterfly . You can find online the schematics and how the wings are actually built in a butter of life . You want to go more in depth into this, and here it's more like it's easier because here we have this, the vein going like so and again Here, notice this shape, then goes out like so we don't need to represent each and every one of these veins on our battle fly, we can get away with just showing sound. Now let's draw out the ornament. So I see that here there is a bit or there's kind of this black and white zebra thing happening Gonna leave it at that. And then on this wing, there is the blacks part here and here. And from this black there's this large circle, that kind of stuff goes around this wing. So this is one circle and we can already drawn in the shape created on the swing. So it's kind of a pointy thing here's happening, and another slightly less point You're here and the same thing here we see the mirror image on the shape over here, and we drove in that circles I'm looking at. It's similar in this kind of a novel on the closer to the top of the circle, and then we're gonna go in, create shape here and begin small shape here. So for the oh, and also these little tiny kind of circles, we're gonna leave them in here as well. So I'm working those in so that I do not lose my drawing when I start putting color to it. So I already while I'm drawing this, it's really good to actually see all these little details because it's going to help you when you are going to be applying the color to it. And here under this wing, there is another circle happening. It's quite large and there's this black part over here in the normal and the same thing goes for here and it's more covered in my reference photos over and also the blinds right here. So the only thing we didn't draw in is this pointy thing here on the wing and the same goes on this side. Now we can start by adding 5. Butterfly Part 4: color. Now I'm gonna use this light violet that I used that I showed you when we were picking colors. And I'm going to add a background. So we're going to add a neutral background to our butterfly, so that kind of comes out at us and we're going to create a little shadow drop shadow from it. So basically, when you're looking at a collection of butterflies, let's say and you see, these butterflies can have pinned to the paper and they slightly drop a shadow. So this is what we're gonna do. We're going to create this illusion of our butterflies sitting on the paper, so I'm going around adding the colors as heroes. So be careful with this kind of big birth can easily hurt your fingers. So sanded surfaces that you can rub your fingers off on them something to consider when you're blending. So I'm adding quite a bit of the pastel so that it covers my background very well. Ongoing hold away here creating the shape of back wing. I'm not very worried at the moment about these shapes being perfect. We will get to that, but we will be working on the silhouette of the wing. For now, I'm just worried about adding the color onto the paper. Also, another thing to take into consideration when working on the sanded surfaces is the fact that they chew up your best out. But they hold it very well as well. Okay, so now we added this light purple. You can use any light color that is kind of neutral. That is not very bright, because otherwise it's going to take away from our butterfly. And we can see this kind of shadow on our reference photo. That is kind of the light is hitting it from this right kind of top, right? And we can see this shadow falling onto the surface of the leaf. And here we're gonna add it with darker violet. It's created this illusion of the butterfly actually sitting on the paper from adding a don't top full around the so it where I see it and this is going to give us that impression of the butterfly actually sitting on the paper. And now we can start blending out, and I'm gonna keep using gentle pressure because I don't want to remove the skin on my fingers, just blending out carefully blending out that shadow. So I want my background to be a smooth as possible so that my butterfly being textured, it's going to create a beautiful contrast, committing, more violent here where Mr don't have enough. I'm blending everything so that it's completely smooth and where you don't have enough color. Just add it as you go. And I don't need a precise kind of very sharp edge of the shadow here. I can leave it slightly faded out because, as I said, everything shark, all the details. I want them to be on the butterfly so it doesn't take away from my word butterfly The word if we lose a bit the drawing and always get back to it. This is the good thing about drawing out your sketches and not tracing them If you, um, don't struggle. Withdrawing skill is that you will get you will remember how you drew your butterfly and you will remember where these kind of details are on the silhouette. So I'm being careful, Jim, create this kind of a smooth transition and you can see it already gives us the impression that the butterflies actually sitting on the surface of the deeper I'm adding a bit more darkness. Fear the thing. Just two colors I'm using. You can use any two colors that you prefer if you like. For example, a blue bright background to use any two colors. One light and not very intense in the Adeline. Darker. If you don't have these kind of dial down colors, you can always add some great over the top, and it's gonna create them, um, complex, beautiful color, rubbing it in to the side. And here already, we're gonna have lighter. If you have some color, make sure that your pastels are clean. But if you have some color, you confess over the mixed in here can pass over with your original color like this violet , and it's going to I can blend it away. 6. Butterfly Part 5: and this is also one of the wise. He need to attach your papers to a border to the tabletop. When you are working in past. So you don't have to create this background if you don't like it, especially if you're working on past o mat that has a color to it. The paper has a color to it. You can leave it beat. But as this is just a D. I y store sound sleeper, it's going to need a bit off color on the background. And here I'm gonna add just a bit of that shadow under the swing just to show that there's the shadow falling from the stop wing as well correct that shape A bit of the shadow of the wanted to go too far out cleaning my hand. So I'm constantly I have, like, a roll of tissues here on the working space so that I can always green my hands when I'm working best. Oh, this is what happens. Throw the best off and there we go fell on the floor or something. So I'm just with this light colored here. Otherwise, it seems that there's another object casting a shadow. I think the shadow was almost good. Okay, so let's continue blending here more color. So the more pastel you have on sounded paper, the list created Damage your fingers and remember which colors you use for the background. We will be using these colors to correct the shape of the wings. Also, there we go. We're gonna find some more. And here I had a bit dirty of red, but I can always pass over it. I'm gonna blend it in, go very smooth and almost done with the background here. You can see this past all kind of filled the tooth of the paper and it created this beautiful flat background color cleaning my fans and just gonna some of this shadow. So for now, Sorry. I'm gonna move the camera so that you see it better. There we go. So for now, we have the background ready. Don't worry. If it's not blended very smoothly, some places you can always correct it. Now I'm gonna clean my hands and we're going to start working on our butterfly. What I want to do First I went to mapping those lights and darks from speaking of the fingers, the attention. I actually did the front sketches on sandpaper. I have rubbed it with my fingers off. I hope that I will not have problems with my fingerprints, but yeah, traveling abroad. So getting back to over butterfly, we need to map in our lights and ducks. Then we will get to our reds and so on. But first, let's look at our lights and darks. 7. Butterfly Part 6: for the darks I'm going to be using first my dark brown not black first, but dark brown. And I'm going to add this color, whatever I see it. So I see it here on this kind of ornament detail. So what if you go over, we can always correct it than here. This color on the edge. And I'm going to repeat the same exact thing on the side. So if you lost a bit the drawing the where you can always if you have blended in the background, it will have enough tooth to actually accept more pastel. And here, I'm gonna do the same thing. Good at those ornaments. No, I'm looking that I have black on the top wings here around the edge of this circle as well . So I'm gonna map that in a swell. And I'm using my pastel on this side because I'm a right handed person. I'm using it on this side. And this is a very good workout with your best still, um, movements, actually painting a symmetrical object. It's going to allow you to practice those movements. So many this brown. Now I'm looking. Where else? I see this black so there were going to have black here and here. Pay attention. Look at the skeleton of our butterfly. So these veins that go through the wings and I'm going to add this black kind of based on the veins. So I'm going to add one being at the time at one of these sections at the time and then the other one so that it kind of separates already slightly into these beautiful sections on the butterfly. So now I see that I have black here. I'm going to add it, create that kind of a circle here and for now with the black where good. Leave it at that. Now I'm going to go in with my regular and I also need my violet. So these are the two colors that I will be using And I'm looking where I see this blue color. So this blue I'm going again section per section is over here, and you can create see how it creates. This kind of reigns in between. That's going to have that more realism. It's butterfly and I'm looking where I see this blue. So this side I see it geared than inside of this part as well and a little bit here, Doing the same exact thing looking at that were reference. But the attention to the fact that even though butterflies are kind of mirror image of the wings of a butterfly are mirroring each other. But the attention that sometimes they do very on nature is never completely symmetrical. So been to see how goes here. And then we're going to add this blue also board here section per section. There we go. Now I'm gonna go in my violence because I see that there's this violet colored present also over here ongoing section per section, the same way my reference photo went away. Sorry, I have it on my computer and sometimes it goes to sleep. So I'm going to add this here against section per section and then looking where I see this violent color think ways goes here kind of overlaps with this blue on here just to add more color to our but they're flying to make it more lively. I'm just gonna have just been through these blue areas, just kind of mimic the same color, even though there is no violent as we don't see it and with the same island. I'm gonna add this kind of thought that I see here against symmetrical and also this little one. Don't worry that it's white. You will see why I do this. And now with this also brighter. I'm sorry. This lighter blue gonna add a bit of this later Blue just to have the color into the wings even though we don't see from the picture. But this is gonna have this kind of juiciness to over butterfly and also some. I've been here and just a bit on these purple spots blue. 8. Butterfly Part 7: and just a bit on these purple spots blue. No, we see that we have this black and orange come together in places and we're going to start by laying in our brown first here at this, the beginning of the wing. And again I'm moving in those sections. I'm looking at this butterfly how it goes from one color into the other. And I'm starting with my darker color first, because if I start to light, it's going to up too much white and it's gonna mix up and create mud. This is my later brown. Then I'm going to up this brighter, warmer yellow to it from top. And it's gonna create those very lately, it's gonna create those thoughts that we see on the wings. There we go, always using it on the side, the best out and there we can go in with our red and start marking in those areas where we see the red. So this is the lightest, warmest Read the moment and again, I'm going in the direction of those sections on the wing. I'm going up until this part here, we're gonna have this kind of a border of the wing going around working always in this in sections and in between I'm leaving this kind of thin lines that gate, this skeleton of the wing. So the paper is working for us. What can you see this paper shining through? And it's gonna create that Wayne texture So again here, I'm going in in sections and I'm going to add this red on the side of this little read part off the circle the same way I go in with my read the same red over here in sections again, I'm looking at how those sections are divided. But as we did our drawing, we already know where we have the divisions, not pressing hard, just going adding that post still once again here. And I'm looking where it ends. So we will have a border here around the wing that's going to be kind of brownish. And over here and again, I'm looking here. There is this the read marking on the wing. Now we can take this same red and create this slower wing again, working in sections. But here we could be more chaotic because it's not as divided as the top wings are. Now. I'm going in with my darker red and with the darker red, I'm going to add some darks over here. I see this kind of these veins not going over the line, But just adding this dark to kind of create more contrast on the same way here, create those passing over the areas which are close to the veins. It's gonna add more color, make it more lively. And with a brown, I'm going to add this there you hear with a brown first and then with a dark red over the top So it's gonna mix in, create beautiful color so you can see already how vivid our butterfly looks. And now I'm gonna add some orange. So this is light orange. Actually, this is to light. I'm gonna take a darker orange at this darker orange at the bottom Here, SC one orange present. Also here where there is this transition from this area of the butter flying to here make you a transition, a smooth transition there at a more orange and some orange over here at the bottom wings 9. Butterfly Part 8: No. This later Orange. I'm gonna kind of create the transition between this inner side of the wing towards our reds. We have too much. Hello. We can add more off this brown that we used, but we added, it's gonna gonna smooth it in more. So this part doing is going smoother, then just a bit of this yellow just over the top to pre that and frankly, appearance. It's with the same thing that we did, but first, but just a bit blending it in. So now we have our butterfly, Um, our reds for the butterfly ready. And we can add those yellows into these dots, and I'm gonna go in with my darker, warmer yellow first and also here and here, always working on decided if there's a little dog here as well, and then with the lemon yellow over the top, just slightly more color to it. So it doesn't look flat. And now I will go in with my blacks looking at my picture, and I'm gonna those darks with a softer black it's going to look better. So these are my darks that go old way around here. We have that edge over here as well, repeating the same process over here, this side adding it over the brown. And this way it's not going to look as a flat black. It's going to have color to it. If you have just black black, it's not going to look the same. And here we have darker area here under the wings and, uh, Circle. We're here now, going back to this one. We see a bit of darkness going around here, and for the for the time being, I'm happy with my darks, and I can add those brown's that will kind of create browns and whites that will create this edge. So I'm gonna go in with my, um not this one this lighter blue and first before adding this white this born Ament over here grandchild laid blue. We're not gonna have buoyed going into black. We're gonna have color always, and we will have that right over the top. In the same way here I'm adding first light blue before I add the white. I'm not going in straight with my weight. And now over the top of the blue, I can have my weight and scream to mix in and create the beautiful, colorful transition. Also some white. And these dots here and over the top over here and here again, I'm going over my light blue. I don't need to cover all of it. It's going to look beautiful where it shines through and creating those dots. What I see with shark movements and the same thing goes here crossing less hard because it's not does white deer if it can see it. So here I don't like how this looks. I'm gonna go in with my orange. Agreed that transition from brown into red with my orange. So now we're lacking the border around, and I kind of lost a bit of this yellow over the top here. 10. Butterfly Part 9: So now I'm gonna go over the top with my light brown. I'm going to create that edge of the butterflies going all the way around. Shape this brown. So here I'm going in these movements, that kind of replicate thes the seems on the butterfly's wings. And here we have that pointy edge the same way goes here turning my pastel so that I could create those movement. You can also turn your beeper managed to turn it here because it was you won't see what I'm doing, but likely not pressing hard going in likely. And creating those pages off the wing we have here. He told the center wing, just on that corner, sticking out more. Now on this edge, I'm going to add my like, yellow over this problem and with my oranges, I'm gonna have this area writer. So that creates this kind of more interesting color to it. Some of the oranges Well, here, Andi, it'll take also the same yellow and lightly at this here. You on the wing here as well? Very likely. None pressing hard. And now with the black, I can outline my butterfly where I see the darkest areas and I'm not going into the butterfly creating this kind of shark up line with my passed out. I see that there's darkness here, but I'm doing these, um, movements where I see these kind of the seams of the wing have darkness like creases in them. And I'm going based on those creases. I'm looking where there's this darkness here and the same goes for this to get away too much went into deep. Okay, you can have the red over the top blend away. Here we go. So and here, the same way. I see this kind of border going and I see these creases and not to lose this black ornament over here. Intensify it. Going into these creases, you can also use a dark brown for this. But my dark brown is very hard, and they prefer using a soft, depressed self for this work. So you have the crease over here that's gonna darker and then creating those creases that I see There we go and the same winkles here on the side of the pastel and not to lose this black area over here is good. Have more blackened. So now, with my like yellow. I can go back. Okay. Squirreled away from me. I can go back in and create some of those kind of the later inch that I see on the outside . But we're here all around the wing where you see those light orbits. They don't have to be link perfect. This is going to add more contrast to the background for us. 11. Butterfly Part 10: So there we go. We have this now, And what we are lacking is the body of the butterfly itself. So we're gonna take our brown first, and I'm gonna have this ground here in the middle over the body. We don't want to stand out that much, want the winds to actually stand. And I'm going to add a darker brown here for the about actually is so here in the middle and with some of that red reddish orange is we could just a bit of red and orange create the connection between the winged butterfly itself with the spread of orange. So we're not gonna go into detail on the butterfly's body because it always gonna look too much like a bug even though that it's an insect. We don't want to kind of make it seem for insect e than it is. Yeah, I'm just gonna clean that outline of the body so very gently and I see that there is some get like I let here the body at the bottom and create the highlight on top. Also, there we go. And now we need to complete the head. So I'm not gonna go into detail again. Just gonna create those eyes. And that should be enough. And I'm gonna create those antennas that we see. And I have done a bit on the top with some look like violent, just like my leg just to kind of highlight on them, actually, even like yellow, cause we have believed violent. Uh, no. So highlight. Maybe on this tennis lately And if you have gone into sorry, you have going into the color here, can always blend it away. Just take it away. So it's not jumping out at us, and I'm gonna add more of my leg violent over the top just to cover it up. We don't see it because I started the paper there. And now that I'm looking at my butterfly, I'm just noticing what else do I lack? So I like but this brown where these wings actually bend that. And now I'm just gonna have more of this blackness to it just intensified those markings, so we create more contrast. And also we lost the black over here inside this ornament, and here I'm creating these kind of little shapes that go based on the scenes of this butterfly's wings. There we go. This looks quite good. The singer was here with the soft black of going in, creating that tournament. We're not going to actually, we cannot some white to create those kind of zebra stripes, but it's not something that we need to do. So here we need to have this black so you can see how beautiful and like these contrasts toe work black that broke. Take it away. Also here just sharpened those lines, and that's a darkness on the body. So we want all our colors to be present in all the colors of our butterfly oils on the body . So if we're putting a color somewhere, it's best to use these colors everywhere. And what I want to do is I want to take my dark brown and could have intensified those just off these things just slightly in the past. With dark red over the top, I was a dark red. It's going to kind of mix in together and create that beautiful they 12. Butterfly Part 11: So we need to add some whites also on the site here, into these dots, and I'm gonna correct the shape with my dark brown. First, I'm gonna correct the shape of the fling. So what a better look friend of So it looks straight on the same here, gonna correct the shape. And then on the other side, I'm gonna pass with my like purple that I used for the background and take away these colors that have gone out of my wing.
