1. Intro : Hi, everyone. My name is Kareem, and I'm the artist behind Aria Marley Course. It's very much a beginner's course, so you don't have to have any experience with presidents to go along with this court way to show you that you can join.
2. Hello and Welcome: everyone. My name is Kareem, and I'm the artist behind Aria Marley Art. I want to take a minute to say thank you for joining me in this course. It's very much a beginner's course, so you don't have to have any experience with President Prior in order to do that. I've been a professional artist for the last four years now, and I've been using Resident to create a lot of my work. You can see some of the work behind me in the last year. I've got in a lot of questions regarding my process and safety and how to use President how I use resident in my artwork. So I decided to put this course together. I'm going to share all of my secrets and also share a lot of where I buy my product. I've actually gone a step further, and I have done all the hard work for you, and I created a product hit to go along with this course and this product kit includes everything that you're gonna need in order to do this project, and we'll go into that a little bit later. We're gonna go over in this course safety, adding colors mixing the resident how to port an ocean escape, which is the project that we're gonna be doing today in the class again. All the materials are in the product kit that you can purchase. You can absolutely purchase these materials on your own. But I've just made it easier for you and put it all together so that you can buy this kit and go along with my course. This is the beach gave that. We're going to be making me this one last night for you. So you can have an example. Rosen has really been blowing up right now in the art community. You've seen it everywhere. From beach gates to river tables. I am obsessed with it. And I can't wait to show you so that you can join in my obsession with me.
3. What is Resin : So what exactly is Resident? This is a question that I get a lot, so I want to go ahead and cover what today's and some of the safety that's included when you used so president, actually two part system that, when mixed together, solidifies into a hard plastic. It drives and cure to a very high, hard like glass, the substance and it's also very shiny, so you can see behind me. I use it a lot in my artwork. I created the ocean part of this painting with the residence. You can see the high gloss, and it's actually very hard, like I can tap on it and you can hear that dries very hard. I'm surface. You can use it on a lot of different surfaces. You can use it on wood. Plastic had everything, and you can also hold it so you can actually pour it into more than it's called casting. And a lot of what I sell in my Etsy shop is like a mermaid ring holder. So this is all made a present. The mermaid tail and I actually poured into the abdomen show to create different pieces like that, and then I also created. You can create ocean seats on, so this is considered a wall poor, and this is another example of what you can create with just a few examples. Once mixed together, you can add diced twitter, glitters, pigments, different things like that to create your artwork. Never you know what residents have. The second question that I get asked is, Is all resident the same? And I have to say that after four years of using resident, they are not the same. My personal favorite brand is the art Probe by Maas Epoxy. They actually worked with different makers and different artists and flew them into their headquarters on Ask them questions on what type of resin they needed to create their artwork. And this is what the outcome was, So this was made by artists for artists. It has a longer working time, so that means that you have a longer time that it's in a liquid form in order to create your work, and it also dries to a beautiful shine, and it has a UV resistant in it so that it doesn't yellow. So yellowing is one of the bigger problems of using resident with your artwork. So you want to make sure you the quality resident like mass epoxy, in part because of not your product, will yellow after a little while. So I would hate for you to have to spend all that time working on your artwork, can be really proud of it or working on something for a customer. And then months later, it turned out, for example, these are some castings that I made with resin. About a month ago, I used the exact same white pigments on vote, and after one month, the craft store resin turned yellow and the mosque epoxy resin is a perfectly white in clear. So just is just an example of how important the type of resident that you use it. Now, this president is not included in my kids make It includes everything that you're gonna need for this project except for the President only because I cannot ship it. 4. Resin Safety : Okay, so now that I've got over what resident is, I really want to discuss the safety and your safety when using at the end of the day, it is a still a chemical as safe as the Maas epoxy brand that I use is you are gonna be adding chemicals to it. The paint or or alcohol inks, etcetera. And once you heat that up, that's when it becomes, you know, not the best for your help. So you really want to make sure that use every precaution to ensure that you're safe, because you don't want to get sick doing what you love, right? So here in front of me, I have a couple of masks, and I really wanted to show the difference between both because I've noticed that when resin artist start in the beginning, they make the era of using the wrong. So I just want to go over that very quickly. So this map is a three M dust particle mass. This is used for standing, so you can use this when you stand would war resident. But it's not gonna protect you against the chemicals that are coming up when you heat the reading. This is a again, a three M mask, but the cartridge is a P 95 organic, a chemical filter. So what this says is this actually filters against any olders or chemicals that are in the air and will protect your lungs when you're using president. Ideally, you would want to use a full face mask. But if not, the organic resin max will work perfectly. Also, you would want to wear nitro gloves at the end of the day. Resin is a chemical, so you want to protect your hands and skin against the revenue. You have to use nitro gloves. Not they test, and these gloves are actually included in my product hip. That goes along with this course and these air powder free and latex free gloves. If you do happen to get a little bit of resident on your hands or clothing or on your tools , you can use a hand sanitizer. So I always keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in my studio, and you can use this to wipe your tools down or to gently remove a little bit of rather if it gets on to your hands. Now, this resident that I used from masa Poxy is no. Vo sees no order very safe to use if you're gonna be using it on its own. But because we're adding in additives such as Alcohol Inc or acrylic paint and then heating it up, you really want to make sure you use of every safety precaution just because when you do add in those things, that's when it gets a little bit toxic. You also want to make sure that you're working in a well ventilated space. So especially if you're working in a small home studio. Oh, are you don't have any windows. You want to make sure that you at least have a well ventilated area such a ceiling fan going. Or, in my case, I have these lighting glass door open just so that you have a well ventilated area working
5. Project and Materials Kit: all right now onto the fun stuff. So I'm going Teoh be taking you through making this piece here. That's small ocean escape with resin. This is a small five by five wooden panel. I find wooden paddles to be the best four beginning resident artist. Just because it's a nice, clean, flat surface, you can really practice your waves and your lacing, which I'll get into later on. But this is what we're gonna be creating in the course, and I just want it over the materials that you need. Like I said, I have all the materials already in my product hit box. But you can absolutely find these materials on Amazon or at your local craft store. So this is the haria Marley, our resident ocean or fox, and inside, you're going to find a brand new zika. So this beacon is used for removing bubbles from the resin. When you mix, resident does tent above a little bit, so this helps to remove the bubbles, and this actually creates the waves here that you see. So this resin, this gun is going to help push the white over the overlapping the blue color, and that's gonna help create these beautiful waves that you see here. So that's all done with the heat gun. This is a regular and bossing chika that you can find on Amazon or at your local craft store again. Safety. Always very important. I include a pair of the nitro gloves for you to you, the five by five sides wooden panel painter's tape for a masking tape in order for you to take the side of your panel. So because we're pushing the resident over, sometimes it will create drips on the bottom. So in order to prevent that, we go ahead and tape it, and then we remove the tape when we're finished so that you have nice clean. My kids also includes a small canvas so that you can practice on a different surface. This is a five by seven stretch canvas. I've included paper cups. This is what we are going to pour the resin, what's once it's mixed into it and then add the coloring so we're gonna have a different cut for each color to silicone measuring cups. These cups are reusable there, silicone. So once the resident years inside, you can actually feel it out and use it again. And it comes with the measuring guide on the side of the cup, a large plastic measuring cup. So I like to mix my resin first in the large cap and then pour into the smaller cups and add the color. And lastly, this is the Beginners Essentials kit, and they come with all the rest of the items that we're gonna need, including the pain and make things. Now that I've opened up the essentials bag that's inside of my product it I want to show you what comes inside. So I have personally pre prepped these paintings containers with the exact formula that I use in order to create my artwork. And this is actually a mix of craft paint, acrylic paints and also liquid text acrylic. The combination of these two things is what is going to help create the cells in your artwork. So that is my secret. That is the tip that a lot of resident artist do not share. But I have gone ahead and premix that for you into these containers, and that comes along with my product. I also include a mini level because we're using liquid and hoisting it up on paper cups to keep it from tipping over and more on one side than the other. We want to make sure that we use a level to ensure that it is flat, and even so that our artwork can come out looking beautiful. So I also include that for you. I also include um silicone mixing tools in order to mix the resident paint brushes to paint the base of the wood first and also small pallets in order to remove the paint to make your colors.
6. Prepping Panel : Okay, let's get started. So the first thing we want to do is you want to take your wooden panel, and we're going to use the masking tape to tape the size and the bottom of our peace. So at the end of it, you should have something that looks like this. So this is the finished product, and as you can see, it does tend to drift out. So what we do is we put the tape so that when it does dry, we could just feel the tape and have nice clean in order to do this with a couple of people . And you just want Teoh. But the tape a little bit underneath the lift, where? The edge of the wooden pier and then pull that over. So I'm gonna go ahead and fast forward this, but basically, this is all your doing. You're just going to tape the sides and then the bottom half and you're gonna be this exposed so that we can do our work on it. So now that I have taped the entire side and back, we are ready to prep the panel. Now, a lot of artists do tend to skip this step, but it's completely up to your taste. I like to prepaid the panel just because it acts as a kind of barrier. What can be porous? And then it will create bubbles in the resin so the pain acts acts as an extra barrier for that and as well as sometimes when we use the heat gun to blow the resident over the wood, I'm intends to run the resin off, and then you can just see the wood underneath, creating a very dull color. So if you want a really vibrant coloring at the end of your painting, I do suggest painting first. So this is why I have included all the colors. The other thing I want to mention is some of the artists love to use the wood grain as part of the sand and do not paint it. I'm gonna go ahead and painted the same color just because that's what I did on my example . But if you don't want to paint that and you just want to have the resident waves come over the wood grain, you can do that as well. So these are the paintbrushes that come in the kit Like I said, I pre packaged and pre mix the paints for you. But I'm just gonna go ahead and had a little bit of the paint here, and I'm going to pre paint the panel. Do you want to create a very great look when adding the second color? You want to overlap a little bit over the dark color, creating a seamless hombre transition. This is what's going to give it a more natural look. You don't want to have to start contrast ing colors, because then it won't look as natural. You really want to kind of blend that in and work some of the lighter color up into the dark, and you don't want to do it straight across either. Right ways. Give it a more natural look and make it a little bit more baby. Now, I'd like to leave a lot of this Dan area of larger sand space because I like the week to kind of overlap and come on to the stand. If you leave two little sand, the present can come over too much and then it won't look. I'm as aesthetically pleasing, but again, it's every artistic taste. This is just the way that I do it
7. Mixing Resin and Adding Color: right. So your final product, once you're done painting your panel should look something like this. A nice hombre blew onto the sand. It is a little bit wet, but that's OK, cause by the time we're done mixing our resident and adding the colors, it will be dry enough for us to pour on. Do not worry about any imperfections in your painting. It does not have to be perfect. You guys, it's going to be covered with President. As you can see in the final product, you don't even see it, so don't worry about it being perfect. So now we're going to make sure that you have your gloves on. You're going to be using the large mixing cup and your silicone spatula in order to mix. You want to make sure that you have your paper cups three of, um, ready to go nearby and also your pain. Now, how much resident do you need? I've been doing this for so long that I kind of just I doubt, but a lot of resin artists use a scale you want to measure by volume and not by weight. But there's an easy trick. You can Google resin calculator and a resin calculator will come up in which you can just write the dimensions of your panel. And it will tell you exactly how much resident you need to make. So, like I mentioned, Prior Resident is a two part system. So what we're gonna be doing right now is mixing the resin, one part resin and then an equal part hardener into the large cup and mixing it together. I am gonna be pouring a little bit extra present just because even though I've been doing this for so many years, there's always room for air. It happens. And so I'd like to have enough present that I can just scrape it off the wood panel and report. So I'm gonna be pouring or mixing a little bit more residents so that we have a little bit of extra for those purposes. So we're going to take our big cup, and I'm going to grab the first part of the reason, which is the a poxy. And I'm just going to pour in one part into the mixing you want to take. You really want to take your time for, because if you pour too quickly, it will create bubbles in your presence, and they're a little bit harder to remove or just take a little bit longer. So you really just want to make sure to really take your time and for slowly into your cup . Now I'm gonna be pointing the harder part, an equal amount into the larger cup. Now that both are in dick up, I'm going to use my silicon spatula we're gonna gently mix. So you want to make sure to continuously scrape off the sides of the cup when you're mixing your cousin because it does tend to stick to the fire and also to the bottom of the cup. So you want to make sure you're always creeping and mixing slowly, so it's not have as many bubbles in your work. It is cloudy, so as they're mixing together, it becomes very cloudy. And as you continue to slowly make, it will turn a very clear father, and that's when you know you're ready. Support. So that looks about right. We're going to go ahead and set this off to the side for a moment, and now I want Teoh put our wood panels and placed it up on two cups so that we can for the resident over. You really want to use the level at this point and make sure that it's nice and level and flats. You can see that the air bubble is right in between the two lines on the level, so that means we are good to go. I personally like to turn my beach escape with the ocean facing to my left because I tend to pour with my right hand. So if you're right handed, this might work for you. If you're left handed, you might want to turn it the other way. Everyone has their own style, but this works best for me. So now we're gonna take our three cups, We're going to pour a little bit of resin into each cup. So this is going to be the dark blue, the light blue, and then this is the white for the beach. I do not mix the sand color because I like the ocean to just slow over the sand. I'm not gonna be pouring on that part, So let me just give it a good mix, and I'm going to just pour a little bit of resident into each cup. So now we're down to the most crucial part of the entire process, and that is mixing in the coloring into your. So this is my trick. Every artist has a different way of doing it. Some artists will mix powdered pigment or Micah's or different things into their resin. My favorite for beach scape, specifically, is a mixture of acrylic, alcoholic and acrylic paints. So this is what I used personally. And that's what gives me the beautiful cells that you can see behind me in this painting. And that's what I'm going to show you. And also that is what comes premixed into these painting containers that I premix for you in my kit. So all this that I'm mixing here is already done for you in these containers that are in the kitchen. So what I'm gonna do is very carefully. I'm going to add just a drop of acrylic paint that's all unique. If you add too much, it will interact with the resin and your resident will not cure, and it will stay tacky. Do you want to make sure to just use one drop? That's all you need? And the matching color in the liquid. It comes in a dropper for And for this, I'm gonna add a little bit more. I'm gonna probably do about three. Drop and you can use the small special A that's included in the kit. And you want to go ahead and mix that. And like I said, all we scraped the sides because that will ensure that you haven't even color because the resident don't stick to the sides, and then it won't come out evenly. Now, the reason I'm not using these to make this product is because for those of you that are not going to be purchasing the kid and you're gonna be purchasing your own materials, I want to show you how to do it with the materials that you already may have at home. Okay, so now for the light color again, I'm just gonna do one drop the light blue and I'm going to shake the lip, protect. Think we're gonna do about three drops. But that especially you. I'm gonna make sure as you can see, what I'm doing is this is very important. You want to scrape the size? I know it looks like I'm just mixing. But really, what I'm doing is I'm turning the cup as I mixed and I'm scraping the size of the cup and the bottom at the same time. And lastly, we're gonna make our life. So in the resident community, it's always a big deal as to what white are you using in order to make your ways there So many different formulas and things I resins used. But my personal favorite is the opaque pigments from casting craft. After four years doing this, this is the only thing that gives me the best results that I like. And that is a lot of cells, a lot of beautiful waves on. And this is the only product that does that for me. I tried a feeling pain. I tried pigments. So if you really want to create beautiful ways, this is what you're gonna you And again, this is what already comes mixed in with my kids. So it comes in this little bottle and you can add a little bit extra more so than the, um then the acrylic paint. So I really went ahead, and I added probably about three squirts of the castle and now I'm just gonna go ahead and mix that mix away again, scraping five. So the preppers always would take the longest. I know when you watch the resident videos, you see the girls and they work so quickly and it looks so easy, but you don't see all the prep that goes into it. But I think I made it very easy for beginners, you know, just makes your pains, and then you're ready. For now, You want to clear your space just because now that the resin is mixed, you really want to move quickly? Because even though our pro is amazing and that it has a 30 minute working time in case you make an error and you have to start all over, you really want to work fairly quickly before it starts to cure.
8. Pouring and Making Waves : right now that we're going to be finally pouring and heating the resident, I want to make sure that I have the mask on my globes. And I also have a pair of safety goggles. Not necessary. But just in the event that something were to splash up or getting your eye, you really want to make sure you have protection. So I'm gonna be wearing that before we get started. Understand? A check the level one more time. There was a lot of movement on the panel. We're good to go. So what I'm doing now is I'm going to for the first layer of the dark blue and using that same spatula, you can kind of guide the resident. Where do you want it? I kind of just bring it down a little bit now. You don't want to just leave it shade across, because again you want that natural organic ocean look, So I'm bringing it down, Jeff me in a different area now I'm going to pick the right of blue. I'm going to for that. I was okay. Don't overlap. In fact, we want to overlap. But that you could have So I'm gonna stand by that down. Now I want to bring it down like a wave. More so five over. I want to bring it up. Well, this is totally up to you and your traces. Well, you can add a little bit more light appear if you want it a little bit later. Darker. You could bring the dark down more. Okay, you conceive a bubble in the road. So what we're gonna do is get the heathens. It has to study. So I'm just gonna put it on the low setting first over protect, which didn't do at this time. But if you want to wrapped it in Saran wrap way people always look nice and clean and you could just remove it. Now it's time for the fun part, the waves. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to pour the white, but I'm not gonna Ford on the blue gonna port right in front of the blue so that when we below the waves over, we will go over it and create really nice, beautiful cells. If you put it directly on the blue, it will mix with the blue and year on every doll. The white so that's not what you wanted it. And I think that's where a lot of beginners make their. So you really want to pour right in front? But it just touched one of home, and you're gonna go over a couple times, so you have a really nice, thick, white straight. And this is why before the same Because I like the contrast that really looked at it higher . So I'm gonna leave that. I'm just gonna have a little more nice and thick. We're gonna see how that looks. So first you want to put it on the lowest setting, remove the bubble and heat it up. I'd like to go over the entire thing with come first because it makes it nice in a watery so that the white can move over it. And now I'm gonna turn it on for the higher studying, so that will lower the wave. So we're gonna turn it into setting too. Okay? Now, after a little while, you didn't through the cells leave until papa. If you had a torch, then you'll be able to touch it, and it will come out faster. But you can already see them coming out If you want to, you can put it again. And I just went to for my personal taste. It kind of looks a little bit too street for me, for waves. I'm just gonna have There's no easy excuse. You don't need any experience with this. Quiet. I hope that you can trace something beautiful and I can't wait to see your creation.
9. Cleaning and Displaying: now it's been a couple of minutes, and I want to just zoom in here and show you all the beautiful cells that came out using this formula. So as you can see now, it's been maybe two minutes, and all the beautiful cells are coming out, making this piece really send out and beautiful. This is really the effect and the lacing that you want to achieve when you do your ocean escape. I do have some extra resident left over. So, like I said, I always make extra just in case. But I hate waste. So I have some extra glitter that I had, and I'm just you can. If you have any actual cleaner lying around in your craft room, you can go ahead and pour some into your extra present. I can even add a little bit of the acrylic angels for color, and I am going to mix that up. So I'm just going to mix the color and the glitter because I hate waste. And I would hate for you guys to waste your residents well and so you can always create some extra beautiful things. So just a resident tip. I always have a lot of the chemical molds lying around. You can get these in the baking aisle, so these just have to be mermaid tail because I make thema retail ring holders. But I have a couple and I always have some minor on. Whenever I'm working with President. I just know that if I have some extra risen, it doesn't go to waste, and we can do that. - Okay , so now this is the piece that I made last night. I just want to show you how to peel the tape. If you run into any issues, I'm going to show you a little trick that present artists use. So because the president can harden overnight, it will. Here it will be sometimes difficult to remove. This one's coming up really easy. But if you have any issues, you just want to take your heat gun on the low setting, and you're going to justify a little bit of heat. What this does is it softens up the resin so that you can feel the cape right off. Beautiful. You can see the nice clean edge is if you do happen to get a little bit of residents on the size. You can just use a sand hand sander and just and that those pieces. But there you go, nice and clean, that's
