About This Class

Did you know there's a wealth of copyright free pictures which are already digitised, online and available to use in the public domain. Now, many cultural institutions, such as museums, libraries and online art collections are even actively encouraging artists to remix their pictures and turn them into animated gifs, but as you can imagine there's thousands to choose from, so where do you start and how do you do it?

Well don't worry, because in this class I'll help you navigate through this maze of incredible images, as I show you my techniques for narrowing down searches, finding great images to use for animation and then subsequently remixing these freely available images, turning them into short and funny animated gifs.

To do this I'll be using a combination of software like Adobe's Photoshop and After Effects, as well as top selling art app, Procreate, on the iPad.

First we'll dive into the new features Procreate 5X has to offer, using their fun face painting augmented reality tool, together with the clone and warp adjustments, plus we'll be using Procreate's versatile Animation Assist feature to animate four masks, simply using your own acting abilities to bring facial expressions to life, as the masks edited within Procreate are augmented onto your face!

These will then become the main players in a Halloween devilish animation, so don't be afraid to play the fool and experiment with all sorts of fun and silly faces you can make whilst digitally wearing them! Then, having created your masterpiece, it's a breeze to export your creation as an animated gif directly from within Procreate itself!

Next, we'll look at using the many powerful tools Adobe Photoshop has, to, separate, cut out, clone, prepare and layer the main parts of an old picture we can bring to life through clever animation techniques in Adobe After Effects (AE), using the might of Duik rigs, puppet tools and the variety of special effects AE has to offer! Your composition can then be easily turned into an animated gif at different resolutions and sizes, by rendering it effortlessly from Adobe's Media Encoder, which works in perfect tandem with AE.

Both of these gif making techniques will help you go on to create lots of short, funny animated gifs, so let's get stuck in and learn to bring free digitised cultural images to life, whilst having a lot of fun along the way!

Hi I'm Nick Cave, nope, not that one (the famous cult singer, formerly of The Bad Seeds) in case you're asking.

In the last few years I've loved playing around with quirky and interesting animation commissions I've been lucky enough to work on, which has meant being able to experiment and create with software like Adobe Animate, Photoshop, After Effects and now some great iPad apps, such as Assembly, Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, Core Animator, Alight Motion, DoInk and Procreate.

I'm even being called, 'The Animator' now, but unfortunately I don't have any cool catchphrases like, 'I'll be back!' Guess I could adopt one like, 'I like to snack' (umm.. probably needs some work!)

I've tried my hand at game and mobile app development, create... See full profile

1. Class Introduction: Hello, I'm Nick and I'm an animator. And I just loved taking old digitized images from collections such as the British Library or Europeana, and turning them into fundamental animated gifs using one or more of their pictures. I've even worked with cultural institutions such as museums and libraries, taking some of the pictures from their collections and telling them into fundamental animated gifs as well. So as you can imagine this thousands of images that you can choose from. So how do you then filter them out? Well, I'll show you my techniques for doing this as well. I use certain search terms and I'll show you this in the class. For this class, I'm going to show you two different types of techniques I use to create animated gifs. With the first project, I will be using procreate, which is already powerful app for the iPad. With the launch of procreate 5X, it's now got a great fundamental tool calls face painting. And from this you can take an image that's on the canvas and map it onto your own face. So as you're looking through the collections, you'll see that there's plenty of mass to choose from. So I'm going to take the mass, turn them into transparent PNGs and map them onto your face. Because ultimately what we wanna do is we're gonna take some of these faces and replaced the heads of the background scenes such as this devils one, and turn that into an animated GIF, GS using four different animations of heads where your derivative acting. Then we'll move on to a more complex project. This were required to know a little bit of aftereffects and a little bit of Photoshop because would be taking a picture. We'll need to repair quite a lot of elements to animate in After Effects. The reason I've chosen fetch truck for this project is because Photoshop PSD files work perfectly in tandem with laughter effects will also be looking in After Effects it using rinks to move the ohms. And this is why you want to really bring your character or live. Don't forget, you can use other software and apps to create PSD falls. There are apps like pixel mater and Affinity Photo. Both have really good tools for removing content to cloning it or replacing it and preparing it and layers we are ready for aftereffects animations. So I encourage you to look at a different range of pictures to experiment with. So let's get on with the project to make a fun little animated GIF. 2. Choosing a Copyright Free Image: So the first thing we've got to do is actually find a suitable image that's copyright-free, one that we think we can use, or several that we can, that we can use. So the first thing I do is I'm gonna go to a site called Give it up. This is because this is a competition that's run by Europeana every year in the month of October. And they worked with partners around the world. They even give you helpful hints and you can choose from some of that collection. So I can choose to search and a number of different illustration collections such as Japanese, what brands, or even things like manuscripts. But even these search results bring up huge amounts of images to choose from. So I'll use my own searches because it's Halloween in a few weeks, I'm just going to search on things like Monster C will go here. And then what you want to be able to do is you can search, for instance, on different categories. So let's try manuscripts as if that narrows it down. Yes, to 75 type of image. Have a media image. Can I use this just because I want it to be copyright phrase, I don't need to travel with any intellectual property rights. And then I'm going to scroll down and see if there are any suitable pictures. Same one straight away because I know that this one's a really good warm. I've actually used as one of my animations previously. I used it for May the fourth day. So you can see that I've got filters like image. Can I use this? Yes. And I'll still got 14 million pictures. There's quite a lot to choose from. So I'm just gonna try and narrow it down a bit further to actually something that I want to use for this class. And again, because it's Halloween, I'm just going to search on demon a bit more manageable. And what I try and do is when I'm looking through his site, I'll pick several pictures. Occurs quite interesting because you've got a devil and you've got a character that almost looks like he's being trapped by this devil and potentially could animate it and kick the head and all sorts of things like that. I'm just having a look Now, see what sort of images. All right. I'm going to go through to about the seventh page. And there we go. So I got them to find 60, just out of interest, I can see the image that I actually want to use, which is this woman who is suffering the pain of colic. And that's the one I'm going to animate. And there are several reasons that I think that's a good one to animate because also when you look through, you can see that there's other similar type pitchers. And although they pretty much the same, notice here that on this particular one, the devils are right at the edge of the picture. So to stretch them and tug them as if they're tugging a tug of war would be quite tricky. Whereas the other one, we've actually got a bit of space to move around. And then there's a nice contrast between the Devil on the left-hand side and the back walls have potentially, if I use context aware in Photoshop, I can just blank out that particular one, separate out different elements. Also as I'm looking at different pictures like this, I'm looking to see how hard or easy it is to actually animate it. So for instance, here I've got the arms, I think I could do something with that. I've got the devil sitting on a chair. I've got the two devil's ie, the slide and they look as if the they're really tugging so the woman is in pain. So potentially I can take up face as well and just turn the expressions to something a bit more funny or a bit more where she's a bit more horrified and scared. Do remember that you can filter the search is even more by just putting in specific categories like odd and rarely you just need to spend some time going through just having a look and other say some of the criteria they may be looking for are things where maybe it got a bit of colour in it. Will the foreground and the background is easy to separate. This is where it gets difficult if you want to use this. That's going to be quite tricky when you're animating it because it's really intricate line work. It's quite difficult to separate out the foreground and the backgrounds. I think it's quite useful to look at images with that in mind. In the next video, we're looking at procreate and mass that we can use to map onto your own individual face using then you face painting tool. So I'm just gonna type in here to show you how I get some of the muscles and navigate. I've just typed in daemon masks. Just gotta make sure that the image is. And finally, just kinda, I guess, to kind of use the IQ at all. So some Massey and choosing conceit As a few that I mentioned in the introduction such as this one. And all you have to do then is just download it. Ready to be tending to a transparent PNG, which we'll then use with procreate. 3. Photoshop and Procreate: Preparing the Mask Heads and Background: So I've gone into Europeana. I'm just gonna do a search on demon mass, like we talked about in the last video. Okay, I'm going to turn the media into just image only lie that makes sure it's copyright free. And then I'm going to select for demon mass from the choices have got below. There's this one as well. And there we have it. So now I've got all the masks to speed up my work prices of just put it into Photoshop because it's got this really powerful Remove Background tool. So I'm gonna go into each of them, double-click on the background so I can bring up the quick actions which can see on the right-hand side of reach them. I'm just gonna select that, remove background. And then I can Judas good image, trim it up. I've got a picture ready to just export as a transparent paying. Let's do the same with each picture. What's nice about to evil removes the lecturing the tag number at the bottom, and then finally to the skull mess. Just do the same thing I'm going to get. I need to do now is I've got the full mass and I just want to get a background scene. I want to replace the full figures with three of them, sort of chattering of one actually performing the devilish operation. So I'm just going to download that, moved over to procreate on unfortunately devils picture. And what I wanted to do is just remove the head so that the scene is ready to replace the heads for the mass that you'll be animating later on. So I'm gonna go into the adjustments tool, which is to the right of the wrench at the top. They can't clone. And then you'll see a circle in the middle of the screen. If I drag that circle at the top to an area where you want to play. And as soon as I then put my pencil my finger on an area, it will Claire that other area. I'm just going to be over the devil's heads and you'll find that you have to just refine it a little bit. You have to move around the area that you won't. And I'm just doing this reference ready because hopefully you went C MOS and Sarah because the new heads will replace these two regional heads. And as you can see, it's a little bit blocks of it. I could go and refine that. And I'm just going to go into one that before we're done just to show you what my one look like when I'd finished with it. And you can see now that this scene is ready to be used as a background scene for the main animation. Because as you can see, now you've got a good background that you can use with the headset. You're going to animate. 4. Procreate 5X's New Face Painting Tool: Bright crates recently introduced procreate fly banks. But what is interesting to me is this one that's procreate on your face. Basically is taking a technology like augmented reality and pasting whatever is on the canvass onto your face in this reference panel. And you can even take videos of a tool snapshots. And that's what we're gonna be doing in this part of the class. But a little caveat, because Facebook is only available, it says here on the iPads or have an a2 chip or higher and Cabot true depth camera, I think modern ipads do, but you might need to check if yours has it. So let's move on to procreate and see how the face paint tool actually works. Okay, I've opened up procreate and I've imported one of the mass that we prepared in the last lesson. And here you can see I've got the pink one and I want to introduce you to face painting tool. So to get that, well, you have to do is you go to the wrench tool. And if you're not already on the canvas, make sure you get to the canvas. And then you hit the reference button in the middle of the page, and that will bring up a window. You have three options. You have the Canvas, have the image, and you'll have to face. And you can see instantly that whatever's on the canvas is mapping to my face. And you've got options here on the left-hand side that you can make it full screen. So you can actually see it that now you notice here I've got glasses on and also the pigments get the moment is not quite mapping to my face and the right way we can adjust that. You've seen that I've got some reference lines and there's nothing on my face. But if I was just to color that red, you can see instantly that Moho face has gotten red. And then just to highlight the markers for Martina to more to me, just change my brush to play, for instance, and then start putting some paint on the different markers. You can see instantly that whatever I'm putting on those particular molecules as mapping onto my face. And we somehow have to get the pig up to the molecules so that then it will map onto my face correctly. You want to take four expressions for each face so that we've got little animations for each head. So if I go to the error tool, doesn't do things in real time, it's mapping whatever's on the canvas onto my faced at that particular moment. So if you haven't got Wolfe, Go to walk. I'm just gonna put the abundance measuring and I'm just going to derive that iss into position. It doesn't matter that the face that you're warping because it's going to be like a fun, loving light to get from your mind. And you can see here now, it's a little bit more in tune with my face. Now. I've got glasses on so you can still see my glasses doesn't matter because I'm going to show you a little trick. If we tap on the reference window when the option is on there, you'll see options on the left-hand side. By then tap on options and I go to full screen. I've got these options to take referred to record a video camera would full screen. So I'm going to take a photo now because we three seconds take my glasses off. Take an expression. Basically you wanna take each of the masks and do it for different expressions using the face paint four times. So eventually you'll have 16 images to play around with from your camera roll. In the next video, we're gonna take these 16 pictures, put them into procreate, cut the mass away from the face, and then we can use them as little animated heads. This is going to be fun and we're going to turn it into little animated GIF. 5. Procreate: Cutting Out Your Face Masks: But just having that procreate. And you can see here that we've got the devil's backgrounds scene that we prepared earlier. And it's going to add in some of those images that we took in the last class. Okay, so now we've got four of those pictures classes inserted images. What I want to be able to do is just cut out this master my face. I'm just gonna tap on the adjustments tool, make sure you're on free hand because I just want to cut out that mass from my face so they sits on its own individual layer. So I'm just doing this a bit rough and ready is to show you how it can be done. So all I did is I swipe down on the screen with three thing is, and I bring up a dialogue called copy and paste. And now I can cut and paste that particular image. And you'll see here for going to allay as a now got an empty phase because I've cut out the pig mask mass, it's on it's own lens. So I need to do is just swipe to the left and leave that one and make sure on this layer. And just repeat the process for these four different images going into adjustments tool making sure among three hand, just loosely cutting it out. And do the same for each of these different images. Don't look first at 4, need to do now is just do the same for the other images. So eventually you will end up with 16 different images of masks. 6. Procreate: Positioning Your Heads: So I'm in procreate, but the problem is the images that you're seeing are far too big and they're all stacked upon each other. So I need to change them. So what am I gonna do with this? Well, the first tip I would say is that I want to be able to put the animation assist on so I can see them individually on individual frames. So if I go to the wrench tool, like go into Canvas and I tap on animation assist. You can now see that they're all separated. But the only problem is I can't see the murmur relation to the background, which is what I was intending to do. But one of the things you can do is make sure that the settings are what you want them to be. So I just clicked on the settings and change frames per second to nine, identity, the onion skin on and I want to on loop. Now the background can remain the background all throughout the scene. And only have to do to do that is you tap on the first frame and you just make it into a background. This saves you a lot of time and effort because then as you're scrolling through, you can actually see the background scene, which is the devil's remaining that all the time. This is gonna be really helpful when you want to resize images and move them around a bit. So do we need to do to adjust them? Well, all Law Day is I'm going to tap on long say take one swipe to the right, grabbed my arrow tool. Make sure you've got the uniform selected at the bottom because I want to resize when aspect ratio. So when a grab a handle, it's just going to scan it down like say, and then I can just position accordingly. And I'm gonna do that for all the others as well. To say, I've got this spiky mask and again uniform rabbit. And just leave it like that and just sit now, got to have them AS imposition. Same but the third one, ok, now so I'm going to walk to the line on each of them. You screw up the error tool again, make sure it's on uniform. Just pave it little bit smaller, just position it. I'm finally, I'm just gonna do that defiles one. And that's going to be the main dentists. I'm just gonna put him in the middle to do the operation. To the pick, maybe a little bit smaller. Okay, and now I've got all of them in position. 7. Procreate: Finalising Your Animated Gif: Okay, so we've got all our mass positioned on the canvas. We've got animation assist opened. All we need to do now is just organize your layers. So I've gone ahead and just renamed all the individual images into things like D1, D0 to D3, and D4. And the way the animation Assist works is it reads the frames from bottom to top so I can go there. So I'm going from bottom to top. But the problem is at the moment, as you can see, if I scroll through all the images positioned and yes, they sort of animate, but they're all on different layers. And animation Assist can use these layers to indicate that there's a frame, but it can also do something else. If you group together a collection of layers, they also act as one frame and that's what we need to do. So the way I would greet them together isn't going to tap on d1e, tap on D2 ray and just slide it across, tap on and D3 a like that. And I'm not gonna tap on day four I at the moment because I want to have repeated pictures with some chattering going on and then the dentist are at the end. So I'm going to leave the green mass until right at the end. So if I now press on group, you can see here that on my first frame, I've got some of them are selecting. I need to set up groups for each of the individual masks. I need to do the same for D1 Bay, B2B, D3 Bay, and just scrape that as well. And there's only one problem on noticing as you go through and start going through the frames. Yes, we've got the mass string, but I haven't got the green one showing. And I know I said I wanted that the end, but I do need a static image so that it will show until I get some actual movement at the end, right, to do that is just tap on, deform a slide to the left, duplicated couple of times. And then all I need to do, just draw or I get down to the group, each group like so. And then drag it around to the group that goes into the bottom of the stack there. That doesn't matter because now I've got two frames at the moment. It's showing like this. And it's still got all the individual ones showing that. So you notice here that I've just duplicated the groups a couple of times because I want to have the devils on the side just chatting away before the main green dentist does his Arsa and right at the end. So I'm gonna go 1234 and then a duplicated it again. And to create a group, you just go swipe to the left, duplicate, and then I've left the end at the moment. And rather than have the green devil just as long position, I want intellectually animate when they also animate. So this time I'm going to duplicate it again, duplicated, again, duplicated, again, duplicate it again. So I've got another four frames and then I'm just going to move things around a little bit. So there in order again, if I go to two and then if I go too long. But the moment there are three sets of chatting devils, but the last one, the devil isn't showing. And that's because I've only got on each warm that static frame. So I don't need to do is just take that, take that out. Take that one out. And then finally on more on identity. Just take that because that's a static form, but I do need to add some of the ones above to some of these frames so I get the devil doing keys, expression paint. So if I then go to d for a don't need that one, can already got that one default. Let's put that into two. That's going to be foreseeing. Let's put that into three. And default day, let's put that into four. So now I've got a little animation with the green devil doing his thing at the end. Well, there isn't very convincing because I was used to get to the dentist and the dentist Vaseline and say go on European amounts. And he will pause a bit what he did it. But unfortunately, this is just looping really quickly and there's no hold on, I pause at the end. So what you wanna do is little trick at the end on the last frame. It can tap on that frame and just do a whole duration for about three to four seconds. And when you're playing them, he holds. And they all hold. Because if it's a shock when he opens his mouth like this, pools. So now basically you've got your animated GIF ready to export an order to do that. It just go to the wrench tool and you go to the Share button. And you just say animated GIF. You just choose animated GIF from the selection below. And then you have a choice either to do it Max resolution, but it's only a small file here, so it doesn't matter too much. For web ready if it's a bigger phone, I'm gonna go to Max resolution. Just export it. And then you can save it or share it. What? I'm going to save it. And then if we play it later on, you can say that it's looping already. Really good. And you've created that now. Sorry, in the next lesson, we'll just do a quick recap of what we learned. Enjoy. 8. Procreate Project: Your Animated Gif: So you've learnt load so far how to choose and find mass, had to prepare them, put them into procreate and walk them ready for face painting, how to strike a pose and even to do a little bit of acting. How to cut out a mask. Late one night came. How to find a great background. Cmb put it into procreate, use the clone tool and clean it up. How to combine all the images, how to group them, use animation assist, export them and turn them into fantastic animated GIF. So over to you now it's your turn to find some incredible mass. Put them into procreate, walk them. Use a face painting tool, do some acting of your own and put them on incredible backgrounds. Replace the heads and turn it into an exported fantastic animated GIF. Because whatever you do, I'm sure it's gonna be equally amazing and funny or dramatic or whatever you want to do. 9. Photoshop: Breaking Down the Ideas For Your Animation: When it comes to making your own animated gifs, One of the techniques I use is to look at other people for inspiration. Look at these fantastic gifts, really funny. And that's my starting point. I often like to make funny ones will slightly dramatic 100 basis just makes me laugh every time I see it. And there's one evening for exercise here. So even with my 9m ones, I'm looking at taking say a picture like this ironing woman antennae into the funny little gift as I did with this one picture. And I'm just turned it into a kind of battle between the cactus and the night. And I also like to take funny little pictures which I can turn into then funny infill animate. It gives lot this mad scientists or this robot 40 pi, which is combination of three pitches. I'm, I've colored it and then turn it into a sliding footie play. Quite a funny thing. So when I was creating this one, this animated woman who was obviously suffering a bit detain and looked at different elements. And I thought, what can I do? How can I spit it out? So I looked at the devil's first of all, and that's all. I need to split it up lots of different elements to put it into After Effects. And you can see when I've opened it in Photoshop that different types of layers that are created. And we're gonna look into this in a minute. So in the next video, we're gonna look into Photoshop and look at specific tools and how I use them to create the different layers and what kind of techniques I use, some using things like context aware or cloning tools. Really we're just building up individual layers and separating out the parts so that we can then put it into After Effects and animate individual elements. 10. Photoshop: Preparing Your Picture: So I've got into Photoshop and I've got my picture that I've searched for and Europeana. And I've only got one layer at the moment and I called it original. I tend to just as natural causes a bit of a backup, just duplicate it. So I'm gonna duplicate it here. I'm just going to call it something like background scene. Okay. And I'm just going to switch off the one underneath. And you'll see here, as I said in the last video, there's various elements that we want to separate. So I've got the devil on the left and the right, and I've even got the little devil i want to cut out. And then because I'm cutting them out, I'm going to have to clone is Harry the table? I'm gonna have to change this area here so it's blank tin and also the back of the chair as well because I wanted to take out little devils and then I'm going to cut out the arms, the tool, so I want to replace the face or at least had a copy of the phase with another one. And then I wanted to have the arm and the right as well. Like I'm gonna choose a magic wand and I'm gonna go into the background scene. And he does a pretty good job of actually highlight to not hold devil. That's quite a good contrast between the foreground and the background here. But I'm not gonna paste it straight away because what I wanted to do is just to go to Edit, go to content aware film, and just replace that background and has already done a pretty good job of replacing the backgrounds that you can't see that dough. And you get on the right-hand side as you're doing this and immediate preview. And it's really powerful. And I think actually that will be all right. And I'm just going to OK that. And I'm just going to get to edit and then do a paste special. Certainly got the devil in them. And let's just see what that looks like. If I press Alt and click on that, it'll just show that layer only a bit like soloing in aftereffects. If I click on the background scene, copy what you see there. If I just isolate that, it just that parts of the wall where the devil was a non-destructive way of working because then I'm not actually replace in the original image completely. I can still go back and change it. So let's go to the background scene again. Please go to my magic oneness. If it does the trick on the right-hand side, copy might be better off just using something like the Quick Selection Tool. And I'd like to just draw around different 1s and 0s. And you have a magic wand. And you can see here it's not done a bad job. And they just copy this. If you don't know the keyboard shortcuts discouraged to edit. And we can just copy that. And it tells me I'm going to go into content aware and just see what it does. I think I can work with that now because I can use the clone tool just tidied up at Sangam to OK it and then go to, go to edit paste special. And then I've got my double right. Might day too. So I'm not so flustered Batman, non-destructive. So you might just go into merged down, so I've got that. But I'm going to work on the background scene now would be alterations already made emerged in. So if I go to the Con tool, which looks like a rubber stamp on the left hand side is also a shortcut which is S, ultimate PC and options on the Mac. And just choose the area. Want to plan this one? I have to press on the alternate shoe select area, so I'm going to click on that left. I'm just going to leave it and consumer ready. It's clearly because it's going to take the time to cut that out for the other elements for this and state armed along the background scene still can just cut. You do need to be aware when you're cutting things out that it'll leave a gap underneath. Now, say sometimes that content aware Phil will work, but sometimes it doesn't. And it'll basically put a bunch of machines in terms of colors. So let's just see what it actually does of copy that again. So we've got it in memory on the clipboard. If I do content with Phil, I think. And this is something you really have to play around with. It took me a little while to do this. Just try out different tools. And sometimes the Content Aware of film makes it easier to do and sometimes it doesn't. So you can just use kind tools and patch tools just to tie it up a little bit. Just going to paste that and pay special. So those are the basic tools I'm using just takes into wild to refine all the areas that you're separating. And let me show you one I've already done just to show you some of these layers and isolation to see what they shipped it looking like when you're finished with that, you can say if I go to let's see if can find a table which was on the background scene. Can see that it took me a little while and I cleaned everything up. And all that is is using the Content Aware fill on the left-hand side and just using the Clone tool ran to the red bits. And you can see I've cut out most of the woman. That's because I do want to have individual elements like the rope gives aside the right Pamela tool saying, I need to have the devil's because I want them to stretch and I can pump it to them and just pull them. But when that pulling up, it's gonna pull on her stomach. So I need that tool so free. So I've already got one here where I've got a tool satellite that also you notice here that I've got the face which has replaced the other face. There's a blank face, but I also need to have the normal face and reason being used because in After Effects I want to be able to add circles there so I can get the eyes moving. So there's lots of different elements here that you need to separate out on through each layer. And it is just cases going in and using their tools, but you do need to refine what you've done. For instance, now if I go into the right arm on the one I just did before, which and you can see here that it's taken some of the red from the chair behind. And you could just use them all key tool and go around and just, or even the magic wand through your bronchi tools that you can use, or even just the arrays that just to get rid of it along as you've changed the background to match the background using Cloud tools or content. Well, then you're good to go. Basically when you've got all your layers ready and you name them, you can just export it as a PSD and then you're ready to put it into Adobe After Effects. 11. After Effects: Rigging Your Character's Arms With Duik Bassel: So I'm going to have attractor effects. So in order to import my PSD file, I'm just going to double-click on the project window, brings up a dialog box with all the files that you want to import or could import. I'm going to click on my PSD file, hit bring it in as a composition, retaining its layer sizes to the same again when it says again, and you can see here, if I just click on it, it opens up all the layers in all the positions. And you can see all the different parts and different layers. And they're all ready to be animated as they're separated and in place. If you look at this one now, which is just a tool side of the head and the arms. If I click on the arm, you can see around here, there's the pivot point and I'll just move that up to the shoulder. The way you do that is you can just grab this tool up top here is Pam behind the anchor tool. And I can just grab it and then move it. And the reason for doing that is because I want to pivot the arm. So if I want to rotate it and wanted to pivot it on that shoulder and I'll just do the same for the left arm as well. If I wanted to rotate it now, I can just press on my keyboard that brings up the rotation property. And then I can move it from frame to frame. Indifferent location, different rotations. So what's happening here is I'm both arms are just going to rotation. And you can see it's a bit old school in the sense that just looks like they've got pins attached to the top of the shoulders and they're just moving up and down. And in actual fact, if you look at this Monty Python animation, it's really funny. And in the days when Monty Python was being broadcast, they didn't have the sort of digital technologies that we've got now. So they had to rely on filming different parts down motion picture by picture. And what I've done in this animation is I've introduced rigging onto the arms and you can see the difference now, here's one I've already set up with a rig and he's got the duet for wreak on it. I've got my left arm is now, it's a controller that controls the arm with some key frames on and same with my right arm, right hand as I call it. And the difference is if I go slowly, if I move this up a little bit, it's moving parts of the arm aside from just the shoulders. If you were actually realistically moving your arm up and down. What is the duit Greek? Well, do it because an external plugin for aftereffects, it's a free resource. If I go to a website called Rain Bach's lab.org and you can just download it if I then download it. So if I then go to this do-it PESTLE folder in what you're particularly interested in, this particular one here. So in order to install that doing plugin, that external plugin, you can just go to File scripts installed script UI panel. And it brings up this dialogue box. If you locate the file that we just talked about, the direct basil to dot js X. And important, it will then go into your after-effects file and you may need to actually restart it in order to for it to work. And then what happens is that when you breed started, if you go to window, rolled down to do it basil, it brings up this little dialog box here. Now you might find that it'll give you a scripting error when you first run it. What I needed to do in order to get over that is just go to aftereffects here, Preferences. And if I get onto scripting expressions, I can see that I tick the allows scripts to write falls an access network hops. And that's crucial in order for it to run when you're setting that Purdue it Rick, you actually need three parts of an arm and we haven't got three parts to the way I get R1. That is I just mass that protect the right arm, for instance, are duplicated. So I'm going to press Command D on the Mac. And I've got three now. And if I isolate one, all I'm doing is I'm going to mask parts of the arms so that they act as if they're parts of the joint. So if I get my pen tool and I can just start rubbing the pen and just moving around like this to mask it out. And I can do that with the other three parts. That's got its own Moscow and you've got the right forearm that's got its own mass gone and the right upper arm. I did experiment with some of these mass just to see where they would go so that I wasn't breaking the whole hand and the arm and the forearm and the upper arm, whatever. I need to go back up to that pan and could set, I can move the pivot point to the particular parts and it's going to rotate on. So if I go to the hand, you can just see it around here. If I go to the forum, like put it on the elbow. And the upper arm is just on the top here on the shoulder. The final step in this process is I've just had to parents each part to each other. So I've got the right-hand parentage, the forearm, the Forum to the upper arm, and finally the upper arm to this top bit here. And now if I just highlight all three that I go to Window basil, if I now go to rigging either from the menu or the menu at the top, I can now just press on this auto rake, certainly does. And in a second it creates a Rick. You can see here immediately that you've got this now controller. And I can move this a little bit like this. And your original arms are just part of the structure. You can actually animate those. You animate everything using this controller. And if I do the same with the three left arm bits, I press alterity again, takes a second. And again, I've got that nice controller on the right and the left arm. Now, if I go into, for instance, they write one and it's just rename that Roy Tom. And this left on to make it a bit more manageable. I can also then just shy these outs because I don't actually need these. And all that means is I can just hide it from the layers here because I'm only going to be controlling the arm using the left arm and the right arm controllers. And I can just click on icon at the top here. And that's size at something like 60%. So I can see that. And then the same on the right arm, 60%. And then when you want to animate particular rigs on these arms, I can just move. The controller is moving very slowly, so don't get a place. I can key frame things like the rotation or the position. If I move that, say cut reframes forward and then move the controller up, you can see that it's changing the position of my hand. Looks a bit funny now, but I can just change the rotation likes. And then if I move it again a few more frames and just move it up. And so that it looks as if she's really been shocked. And you can see there that the joints are moving. And let's do this. I've got a hand going up and that's me. If it up a bit and maybe the hand goes up a bit more and you can see instantly I've got that nice little animation going on of the all moving up. And if I want to do things like sweating away the devil's, I can just move it a bit more precisely on the left arm just again, move it. They can see my arm is moving at a little bit and say what I can do to compensate for that. Just maybe all of them. So it doesn't look as if it's actually coming upon breaking apart. And I'll just move the left arm or put it there. And again, my hand and wrist is sort of coming off. But again, we can just do that, disintegrates and look and the non moves that rotation on the left arm, just up on the wrist. And now if I play it for press my spacebar, you've got a nice little rick. In the next video, we're going to be looking at how we can take this rig, these animated bits and put this together with your main scenes so that we can animate the arms in connection with say, sweating away the devils and making her look surprised or angry or whatever. 12. After Effects: Animating the Whole Scene: So back in after effects and I've got my rig sorted out, so I've got my controllers here. I'm just gonna break down the rest of the animation. The first thing I do is I'm going to look at sort of how the woman is actually going to react to situations they should really ill. And you notice here that I've put an expression on her face. I've got that blank face that I've put in Photoshop. So let's have a look at this. So you can see that I've got the blackface that I created in Photoshop. All I've done is I've just courageous and I is just using the shape tool up here and just use the Ellipse tool to create some circles which then became part of the eyes. What I wanted to do that as well is make the woman realistic, make a panic to a situation, make a sort of blight really nervous about a situation. She looks as if she's going to be really irritated by the devils and just wants to flick them off. So I took inspiration from some outside sources. One of which was an old betty boop video from way back in, I think 19 thirties and 19 forties. And it just shows her sorting a fly. And then as a famous mom with President Obama and he was seen to be sorting a fly in an interview. And yet she actually got it in the end. He does this kind of action roots, flicks it off with his hands and he's just flicking it with the wrist. And that's what I want this woman to be doing with the devils. So when I set up the rigs of now just animate them so that just literally flicking it but looks as she's just hitting that devil there and then they just disappearing. What I wanted to do at first is I wanted to share a sort of reacting to his situation. And I didn't want the temples to be there all the time, wanted it to almost be as if the devils are inflicting the pain on her. So let's go through the same. She just flips them initially and then she's flicking them left to right. And then she panics because what they do is you've seen here that pulling on the rope and then She's panicking land. So you've got that change of expression there to illustrate her absolute panic because she thinks she's gonna be torn apart. Illness is so much. So if you look at the devil's Now, they look as if they're being straight. What I've done here is I've just put on this particular one. I've used the public top, just a puppet in different positions than an animated those properties that the public can do. So he's just stretching. Yes. If you look at say, this one and if I get up to where you can see it in more detail and you can see once one is back and then there's one on the front because basically I don't want them actually to come apart from the rope. I just want him to stretch. And I've used the advance puppet so I can do position and scale and rotation rather than just use the one at the top, which is the default one that you can use the puppet events tool here. And that means that you can just use properties like rotation or scale or position. And I've done that also with the right devil. So you can see here that stretch the way the road swerve because I've just scaled them on the X-axis to anchor point is on the right-hand side. So it means when I'm scaling, I can scale it from right to left. If I just press you on my keyboard, it brings up in keyframes. And all I've done is I've just animated scale a bit. If you haven't on the right-hand side as I have here, you can then scale it out. So it looks as if it's being pulled saying that the one on the right and then that woman's just going crazy with her arms and also had torso moves a bit. And I've got a distortion measure, Node.js like that. And then you can see here I've used the harm should just rubbing a tummy there, and then she flicks the devils than I wanted to add another ingredient in which it's just that little clinging Brown monkey and then it goes down and it just disappears. And finally there's a special effect on the devil's as she hits them. I wanted them just to disappear because they are supposed to live it like a hallucination. So all I've done here is on the one on the left and the right. As soon as she hits each one, I'd put in a scattered arise effect. It's almost like an exploding effect and it just takes the pixels and scatters them. And it gives the impression that she's just vanquishing those devils from her mind. So there's a few examples of special effects and how you can combine the rigs with a different scene. And it just shows you how an animation is built up. You can also add to put an drama or soon she puts her hands up, you can use git. Wow, she's absolutely panicked k-mer. And then because the devils is stretching as well using those public tools that really gives it that extra gravitas and it shows the impact of her illness. So in the next video, we can just be showing how we can take this whole animation. And it's only literally about four or five seconds long. And export it as your final animated GIF. 13. After Effects: Exporting Your Animated Gif: So you've got your animation open in After Effects, and now you're ready to export it as an animated GIF. Now using aftereffects, This is really easy because as long as you've got the Adobe Media Encoder installed, can do this and it works in perfect tandem with After Effects in order to export your animation as an animated GIF, make sure you're focused on it. Then got to the competition from the top menu and just tap on this menu here, which is add to Adobe Media Encoder q. And that will open up immediate in Canada. And you'll see here on the left-hand side here that it's saying H.264, which is a video format. We don't want that because we wanted to turn it into an animated GIF. So if you just click on the arrow here, you've got many choices and wages go scroll down to give. And then it says, And the preset animated GIF matched source, you can see here in the output file and it's going to a temporary folder. I want to change that to go to one of my folders and descriptive click on that. Just navigate your file structure to see the folder you want to begin, make sure the file format here's a video files GIF. I'm just gonna call it animated if demo, and then save that. All I need to do to render that particular file is either click on the arrow, green arrow from the top, we'll just press my nth button on the keyboard and then press enter now. And you can see it takes a little while to render it. And then one simply mockers finished in the tick boxes showing you've got your animated GIF, which is now sitting on new folder in a park. Just tap on it, press Spacebar on the Mac, I can see a preview of what it looks like, okay, that's x, taking it as the default warm. But if I get back to Adobe After Effects and just do the process again at Adobe medium coda q I can also change the sizing serves the file's too big. For instance, I can just change the size of the dimensions and it will change the file size if I click on this pretty set. And then I can change here in the basic video settings by just undertaking this checkbox here. As long as I've got this lot market on here, it means that when I change it to something like 300 height and the width will both change in aspect ratio. And then I just okay it then I'll do the same thing again. I'll change the temporary folder to what I wanted to use and then I'll call it something like a small demo. Save it on the not just press the enter on my keyboard and it renders it again. Okay, so again, so that's it. Now you've got your animated GIF and it's ready to put onto social media. 14. Photoshop and After Effects Project: Your Animated Gif : So it's over to you now. I'm really excited because when I've been putting this cluster that it just re-inspired me to make lots of new gifts and things like that. And I've been making these little animated kissed her a few years now. But you don't have to just use the collection, I'm sure you so for instance, so I've got this European wandered up in Sri, and this has got a wealth of images. But you can also just go back to the GitHub it up, have a look at some of the partners they use and they've got some fantastic ones. So for instance, the Japan search that they mentioned, you're actually learning something as you're looking at images. I'm fascinated with these Damon types, these Ani, and you can just learn all about them. And so it's really good not just as an exercise, but also as a research and learning exercise. And if you go to some of these other collections here, you've got the Digital Public Library of America. You can do a similar sort of filters and see all the wealth of images they've got. And there's also other partners they're dealing with. And you can do the same sort of filters as well. It's fascinating what you find even on Flickr, there's loads of people you can choose from and you just have to change the license to no known copy restrictions. And you can see all the images from somebody like say the British Library. And I searched for things like demons on here and you can see loads that you can choose to use. I've even used this image here and I had jumping Moses with which is an animated that the thing is that even your local museums might have images that are now putting online just using some other techniques that we've learned. You can make your own animated gifs from your own resources. I brought alive demons that I found on holiday or approach live sculptures and mix those to make it almost like a Star Wars scene. I've been inspired by things like Monty Python, these teams pictures just animate their financial sketches. So I'd encourage you to look for lots of different images. Have fun with it. And these difficult times when you can't visit as many culture institutions, you could turn to their online collections. Ready do something great within that makes something funny and something you're proud of Soviet. Let's see what you can do and I look forward to seeing all your projects when the class is published. 15. Class Thoughts: Yeah, I'm swinging a cup of tea because I think we all deserve that. It's been quite a fun but involve class. And he done some really fun projects and I congratulate you. I hope you really enjoyed doing the procreate one. And you can dip into that and do that one is a project alone. Or you could go a bit further and do the more complicated one with After Effects and Photoshop. It'll be fantastic. And I've really enjoyed teaching this course as well. It's really inspired me to make more gifts. And I'm thinking I'm going to use more images and try and experimental more. If you want to connect with me, you can find me here on skill share or you can go onto my social media profile, which is at 6 second history. And you'll find me on Facebook, on Instagram and other platforms like Twitter as well. So please come and join me and make some fantastic animated gifs. It's gonna be great until next time. I hope you manage to stay safe and well and enjoy doing this fun and involved an innovative project. It's gonna be great. Bye for now. 16. Bonus Update: Going Forward!: Since I first recorded this course, sites like European and have changed a little bit. And now you can log in and save your pictures for future reference, which is great. So I've used lots of pictures now to make many more animated gifs. So here's a few of my examples which hopefully will inspire you to. So I'm really looking forward to seeing what you create as well. The majority of those animated gifs were made using Procreate. Also Europeana have changed the way you can search for things. It's the same sort of criteria, but now rather than being on the top, it's on the right. So if I search for something like fire extinguisher example, I can select image from the right-hand side and also select Yes to be copyright-free, which is also great. And of course, if I'm logged in, I can save this using some very simple plus or hot buttons to a gallery or my light switches. Great for future reference. I'm going to use something like the fire extinguisher with a volcano. Just to illustrate, you don't always need to use lots and lots of graphics or pictures to make something just as good. And it's really about imagination. So here I've used the fire extinguisher with a volcano background. And then using some of the techniques that we used earlier in the class, I've simply cut up this fire extinguisher into different parts. I've put teeth on the nozzle and with the volcano architecture little bit put some multilocular in-between just to give it that extra possess. Because I wanted to animate the fire extinguisher turning into a dragon like creature. I wanted to be able to use animation assist in procreate using some of the techniques that we used earlier so that they can come in and out. And it looks like it's seamless, so it's going from left to right. You hold it for a few seconds so it doesn't just go straight away. And then it gives it that sort of extra effect, which is really good. And then you can share it like we did before as an animated GIF or an MP4. And it's really that simple. So you don't always have to use lots and lots of pictures. You can just use the food and still really have a good impact, which is great. I hope this quick update and new animated gifs that I've created inspire you to create your own ones using Procreate or After Effects. And I'm really looking forward to seeing what you create now.
