1. Introduction: Hello, everyone. I'm Nick and welcome. My name is Nick Cave, and I share my name with a famous pop singer. Sometimes people call me an animator, which is strange in recent years. Crafts a really interesting animation commission. So I've animated rocks which had been turned into a frog, going through a vortex field, starving behind it is one that I animating have animated old archive collections from museums and libraries. I did this in adobe aftereffects is one of the ways I learned how to use it because I wanted to gain a greater understanding of how it all worked. Behind the scenes schools, you see everywhere backs T shirts, coloring pages. So in this place, we're gonna wanna make to sculpt, I thought would be fun to do because it's a simple shape. But you could do lots with it and you don't need to be 90 structure built to design. One gonna use to mobile relapse assembly on appropriate. That was a really fun on both a really powerful to use. So the seventies got a huge collection of vector shapes combined for a very low cost. I have lots of fun underwriting because then appropriates got this animation assist feature in it. It's made animating a lot easier, and you could just do simple little things is we'll take a design that we've created in the 70 using basic shapes or shapes from the library that we split up and they will export, bringing into appropriate once a program a show. You had to take out parts of that patriot so it can animate, say, for instance, the eyes on the background. I actually had to text us some the layers and you blend it in with other parts of the picture. It's gonna be fun. So I'm really looking forward to seeing your projects and what you can create. Let's get cracking on with the classes.
2. Why Assembly?: So why assembly indeed. Why? Using like assembly? Well, if you're anything like me, I tend to look on the Internet for inspiration, to get some ideas to start my heart. I might even look on instagram and scroll through All the incredible are you see, And that's my main problem with when you're looking for inspiration, because you tend to get a bit intimidated by what you see. So it's where to start on what you do next. I think assembly is really good for that. It comes bundled with a load of basic shapes. You can drag them. You can resize them. You can color them. But what's so special? About 70. Why do people use it well? Assembly confused for graphic design it's used by T shirt designers. There's a bridge animated called Josh Fortune, and he used to 70 to create all his props characters for his Star Wars, apparently called source Weakens. Put them into a program like Adobe Illustrator and separated everything into individual layers. This meant he couldn't put it straight into Adobe after effects and greatness. Fine animation. I think somebody's really good as a starting point, creating characters or scenes. I've often used assembly to create little figures and characters for animations. Live them, put onto social media there any short animations. And this is what we're going to end to achieve in these classes. My animations that really a few seconds in a seminar crocheted superheroes were created. Scientists. I've even created movie characters such as Captain Marvel or Yoda, and they're all using simple shapes, simple designs. And I've exported it in such way that I can animate it in appropriate or aftereffects. For the purposes of this class, we're going to design a skull. So here's a sculler saw on Instagram not long ago. It's really brightly colored. It's got a little hat. It's got about Ty various elements on this still design, which we could use a reference to animate. And I thought it was quite nice to take that, because we can use the Basic Shapes Library assembly to create it, so we'll be creating the skull with a blow time. We'll have a little hat and we'll have some eyes. These three or four elements will be able to animate individually, and we'll see how we do that in the next few lessons.
3. Introduction to Assembly: way festival. Let's look at where you can get a 17 what you need to use it. Assembly is only available in the APP store, and you can use it on an iPhone or an iPad. But the purpose of these classes, we're gonna be looking at assembly on the iPad mini because when we come to animated, inappropriate procreate is available on the iPhone, but you have to buy another program in order to use school pocket. So let's look at assembly. When you first looked it, you'll just see about three projects in something known as your gallery. That's where all your projects will appear. Top different sizes that you can put your creations in presence in case of instagram. Let's look at something like a square size, because that's the usual size for industry. Unless you do a story on it, you can resize your outboards once you're inside assembly. So seventies have really fun at to use because it encourages you to experiment with lots of shapes, combination of shapes to make other things. So what you're seeing on the screen now in front of you is a white square in the middle that's called your art board. Only things on the are poor will be saved. A picture when you want to export it later on. If I tap on this circle and move it to the left, move it to the right to these areas which are outside of the art board. When I come to actually save it is a picture. Nothing will be saved. Apart from White Square, it's important that whenever you're working on something, you need to put it on the in order for it to be saved lives as a picture. But you can use these areas on the left and right. Just start messing around with things and ideas.
4. Assembly Shape Sets: assembly shapes the nuts and bolts of any design that you make, and it comes bundled with a load of free ones. Such basic styles. Wilderness design elements on the strokes, and these are really good shape sets to start your designs from. You can get some additional libraries, such as the Halloween set vector shapes, but it gives us an option to select the skeleton and use. The head is part of our design if you want to. In order to download the extra shape set, just look at this icon above the shape stroller. Click on it and then you'll be able to select a pack. Halloween one, which we want to download, is free. Just look through that, then download it and it comes straight into your library, ready for use thing.
5. Adding and Colouring Shapes: Theo, 70 makes the job of adding and manipulating shapes very easy. So at the bottom of the screen you can see a shape store, and if you click just above the shapes, it'll expand that, and then you can see more shapes. So if you click from left to right or right to left, you can see all the different shapes sets that you get when you first open assembly. And, of course, you're seeing some in orange. These are the ones that you use for your projects quite regularly on the change from project to project, and when you want to write a shape to the outboard, just tap on it, and it gives it a random color. The fill changes each time you added, and then it's selected. You'll see it'll set on the right hand side, which means you can then drag it around by just pressing a ping on it, and you can see that it's snapping snaps toe orange lines. Because of the top of the screen. There is a magnet on by default it's on. But if you turn it off because you free reign to move that shape around, and also in the shape of selected on its own, you'll see some blue handles. The top circle one is one way you can drag it, and it scales a shape up or down. If you tap that again, you'll get some additional handles. These a really good because then you can distort it. Left, right up, down really good if you're trying to make us some kind of distorted face or some distorted eyes, if you made a mistake, just pressed curly button at the top of the screen. And that will undo what just so you can change the color of a shape really easy in a number of different ways. First will select the bottom color palette, and then you can either color it using the color wheel. As you scroll around, you can see it changing color, or you can use the very powerful I drop, which is really good. If you got a couple of shapes on the art bored and you want to identify the color of another one, for instance, just drag it over in the new click agree. You also get to the styles at the bottom of the screen that gives his option to do strokes and fills and shadows. So if you say this stroke could move the little button to the right, and, of course, you can change the stroke outline color as well, using the palate tool. This brings up the selection of colors, which we can choose from. So again we can select the palate with color wheel or the eyedropper. But we could also do the same for the shadow, so it's let the shadow. Now you can see that we can change the density of it. We could make it darker or lighter, bigger or smaller, and we can even change the color of that well. Second, change the color of the fill in just the same way again. Selecting the palate tool brings it palette colors on the wheel, and there we change it to you. In the next video, we'll be looking at assemblies talking in much more detail. Sing how powerful and simple it is to use
6. The Assembly Toolkit: Theo, 70 comes with very powerful, easy to use talk. It assumes you had a shape to the art board. You'll see a variety of talking options. It can choose from sea change orders, stack, flip it duplicated or even rotated 45 degrees. Wise on you can also delete to shape whenever you had a new shape to the outboard. It sits at the bottom of the stacking order of multiple shapes, but you can change his order by pressing the apparel or the down arrow, which changes the order. Flipping a shape is really easy. You just look for the two triangles on the tool kit. Press it and then your shape flips from one side to the other, duplicating your copy. Here, selected Shake is just Azizi. Look for the two squares and talk it. Press it and it copies it immediately. Then move it out, a way to see it a little bit more clearly. Assembly gives you more precision tools as well, so using the rotate, or you can rotate a selected object 45 degrees clockwise really useful when you want the exact precision just to move your shape. Deleting a selected shape group is really easy. Just click on the been icon on the trash icon at the bottom of the screen and press it and you'll delete the shape immediately. The really great 70 tools being up to change the size and the color of the opera. While you're working on a project, it's really good, and it's really easy to change the color or the size of the art board background. So you get a few choices of sizes, and he can also change the actual color of the outboard by simply selecting the color palette on the right hand side. So here we're going to look for a nice yellow. Then it can change it if you want, and then press on the ticket of the bottom. Click that, and you've got a nice new background. I really loved being out to zoom in and out of the artful with a simple pinch room. It's really good if Europe gets bit cluttered, you can't see things or you got your shapes drawing away. All you have to do is pension, and now you can move it around once you grabbed it and it's such a simple thing to do, really powerful and useful. You'll get to love this. When you finished creating your picture, you'll need to save it is a J Peg or a PNG? Unfortunately, in the basic version assembly, you can only save it is J. Peg because although you can see other options, you can only use thes when you upgrade to the pro version. We can still work with Ajay pay picture, so go back to the button. Save the image in this will put it in your camera roll. We could then work with this J peg and procreate while you were the only design. It's being saved in the background in your projects. Calorie of my work. And you can edit this in various ways. You can either duplicated by looking at the copy function at the bottom. See there you get the project immediately. A copy of the original. You can also choose to delete one of your projects by clicking on the trash with the waste bin icon at the bottom of the screen. Well, then get a prompt to say, Do you want to delete it? Delete it and it goes away. And of course, you can rename any one of your projects by tapping on the default name and then renaming it from the keyboard on your iPad, then just continue to work on it by in the project once again and there's your art board.
7. Grouping Shapes: so an assembly. You can combine shapes and groups so you know, shapes or in a group with orange handles around. So within a group you can edit it. That means you can take each individual shape and color. It will stretch it or take it apart. And then, once you've edited it, all the shapes within that group a clusters one. They don't then become individual shapes. Once you've made your decision to turn lots of shapes into a group, it acts is one thing that means you can duplicate it. Could move it around is one thing, or you can color it along the same thing. So let's look at this face group in more detail got eyes, which is circles. We've got the face or the head, which is a pink square with rounded corners, and we got a mouth that's from the tile set of shapes. A round circle, which is the outer part of the eye, even has an outline on it. On. You got the inner part, which is a white circle, and then you got the pupil, which is a black sir waken gravel. These, by pressing, are things on the screen dragging around all three circles, and that gives you the option into turn into a group. The link icon on the bottom left corner gives you the ability to turn it into a group. Then you can move those three circles is one thing. Thean vantage of these three circles now being a night group is that you can also duplicate because they're treated as one thing saves you having to repeat all the different stages you went through to make that particular group. Now you need to do is move the mouth onto the pink square, and then you could make another group with groups inside it. So the eyes are a Group B can make the whole thing group just press on the screen and drag around the square, and that will give you the option to turn into a group after it becomes a group assembly treats. Whole thing is one thing, but being up to group things, there certainly has many advantages. Let's look at this skeleton Halloween center shapes I ask you to download. Earlier, we could use just the head part of it, But the split shape function is only available in the Assembly Pro half, But this is where we can use grouping to our advantage. We can cheat assembly my covering the parts we don't want to show and then grouping the more you probably thinking one of my talking about because that's pink. The other one's a dark pink and the skeleton. The moment is red. So when you group them all together, it's just gonna be a redhead and pink blobs. Remember, I said, you could color the individual shapes within the group. Look at the art boat. Look in the background. It's a yellow. So if we color the shapes yellow, they're gonna hide the rest of the skeleton, and we're just gonna be left with the red head, which we can use as part of our design. Let's see this in action, and then we'll turn everything to a group and then you can move. It is one thing. Also, once all the shapes have been turned into a group, you can resize it and make this skeleton head the dominant shape on the art on because nothing either side of the awful will get shown in the picture. You could save it out to the camera, roll on own. Your red skeleton head will show in the next video. We'll look at taking a circle, duplicating a couple times, re sizing them and then grouping them all together to make that the basis for your skull design shape.
8. Shaping Your Skull: so you could use the skull that were created in the last video and start working on that and then group it all together. Or if you have the pro version, you can split the shape up, get rid of all the bones and everything else on the art board and just have the skull head that you want to work. You can even outline this and no doubt the shapes to it. And then group those as well in the same way as we did with the pink face. But I think it might be fun to work with more basic shapes so you can see the skull design I created. And I want you to experiment with something like circles, different sizes, different combinations to see what you can create. So here we got a circle on the or board, but I'm just gonna make it a little bit bigger. Move it up a bit. And now, once you're happy with your circle, that first circle you put on your board, copy it and then you can move that one. Andi just a little bit and just resize it. And if you happy with that, we can use that as your sculptures on Hang on a minute. I created this one earlier, but I did feel it looked more like a snowman than a skull. I started looking a bit more closely it skeletons and skulls, and I felt the perfect combination with to use three circles, So I got a large one of the top. The middle one is slightly smaller on duplicate the middle one to make a smaller one at the bottom, and then you've got the basic outline of your skull head. Anything is. This looks like quite a long sculpt head, but you can experiment with different shapes sizes until you find one that you're happy with. So let's group this one. See what we can do with it. It's worth noting that you've upgraded to assembly pro. You've got the option to rather than just group it, you can combine the shapes into one thing, and just like a group, assembly treats a combination of shapes as one thing. But the difference is that now it's treated as one shape. A group of shapes is still a group of three shapes, for instance, and you can edit each one individually with a combination is just one shape, and you can manipulate that like you would an individual shape from the shape store. You can give a combined shape one single outline, but if you tried to do that with a group of three circles, it'll give each circled its own outline. But there is a way around that. So we need to do is copy of green shapes, color it black and put it back into position. Use the arrow keys on the right hand side, talking to lower the stacking order. Then it's underneath the green shapes, and you could make it a little bit bigger. Then, when your group those two sets of shapes together, you've now got the basis of a skull design. But I'm not very happy with the longer shape. I think it should be squashed a little bit, so gone through the whole process again and just made it a little bit tighter, a little bit smaller, so it looks more in proportion. But the skull had created earlier. I've also added this group of shapes this combination of circles into my sticker gallery. This is a very powerful feature of assembly and will be looking at this in more detail in the next video
9. Stickers Are Your Friends!: I love Stick is an assembly. 70 comes bundled with a loaded them ready made vector shapes and you can customize them. You can use them, you can use parts of them. You can group them, you can recover them, they're great. And I'm going to show you how you can use stickers in your design. When you group shapes, you also have the option to add them into your sticker library, and they'll appear in your own personal gallery. So we're gonna use various stickers from the sticker library in our design. Let's look at this circus guy. He's got a hat, moustache and a bow tie. If we and group him, we can use just the parts we want for the eyes were going to use a geometric shape. All we need to do here is just edit the shape. And then we got the option to change the colors we use. This knows that we found an emoji boy we need to do is and group it and take it in Color it . Now you've got the main elements to create your skull design. And if you look at the green shake that we create before you can put away the elements together with some from the shape store. Once you created your skull design, don't forget to turn it into a group group all the shapes and you've got the option also to turn it into a sticker, which will sit in your sticker gallery, and you can use in other projects as well. But these are just techniques I've used when I created my skull design like grated others. But I'm really looking forward to seeing examples of your skull designs using some of the techniques that are demonstrated here so you might use simple shapes. Stick is decorative elements really give it some possessors. In the next video, we'll be looking at how to set up your skull design on export. It is a picture with individual elements such as the eyes or the hat on the bow tie separated out, so it will be easy to animate once we put it into procreate.
10. Saving Your Skull Picture: So if your skull design is not showing, just grab it from the sticker library because we're gonna need to do a few things to it, like in group it. This is because we want to be able to separate out the parts ready, toe animating, procreate. So let's look at different parts to separate. First of all, let's take the bow tie, put it on a separate area of the picture. Then we'll take the I've flower. We only need one so we can get rid of the other one in a minute because we can duplicate it in procreate. We need all the parts of the pink hat, so move it all together because that's going to animate from the top of the head. And finally, let's move the mouth because we'll probably want to distort that. With all the parts separated down, you're ready to actually save the image, suppressed a hamburger. I come on top, then press to save image button, and your picture will save in your own camera on your iPad, ready to animating procreate. So in the next video, we're going to look at how we can import in and start separating out individual parts toe animate the eyes, the hat, the bow tie on the mouth
11. Introduction To Procreate: you'll need to get procreate for the iPad, which is available for around $10 or £10. 20. Which country Get it from? Open a pro great and look for the photo talk in the top right hand corner. Press on that and you'll get some options in your camera roll. You put the picture that you created in the last lesson. This will put it straight into procreate. However, our pictures massive at the moment, so let's resize it. Look at the wrench on the top. Click on canvas, and that'll give you some options to crop and resize it. Just remember, though, to click on the re sampling tool, which is on the far right hand bottom corner. This means that when you resize it to tell me to buy 10 80 it'll do it exactly now. Open the layers tool by clicking on the double squares of the top and then duplicate that layer so we can keep a copy of it. Just slide it to the left, duplicated, and then we'll rename it. So I tend to call the original something like Let's have a look. Oh, original skull, just to be completely original and then we're gonna rename the other one. Maybe something like Skull. Let's do that now on. We'll rename it and we'll just call that school. But your pictures got a block, a purple color on the background, and this will make it difficult if we're trying to cut things out. So let's click on the screening tool from the top. Make sure the bottom settings a automatic and just slide it left or right to get your threshold right. So when we cut it out by pressing on the branch it all and then cutting it, you'll get a transparent background rather than the block a purple color on them from the background. We need to select the color that we just had on the picture so that that will show through underneath that particular layer. So just put in a value something like 64 to 8 91 which is that purple hex decimal color. Then, if you tap on the background layer to see it, you'll see the purple color come to life. So we want to be able to cut out and pasted pictures into different layers so we can animate, say, the eyes of a bow, tie the mouth or the hat. It's a tap on the selection tool. Again. Drag your finger around the eye flower on the free hand setting and then drag your three fingers down to get the cut and paste dialogue that will put your new I flower its own land . And then we can rename. That is I. After you selected a light, there is another way to cut it out by looking rental the ads section. Then you get the option to cut paces particular object, which in this case, is the bow tie completely under its new layer. Just rename it accordingly, so we just got a couple things to cut up. Let's start with his toothy mouth in the right hand side, select it, cut and paste it, and then that puts it under its own layer. Again, let's rename that school something like mouth, just to be pretty obvious. Then that's Marquis. Round the pink hat, complete being cut. Paste it again. That puts it onto its new layer and click on that. Rename it top hat. We need to animate two eyes, but we've got one already, so we can just duplicate the layer with the I float. So where we clicked, I left. Well, in this case, we're just gonna slide it to the left, press on duplicate and get a copy. And let's just rename that I are to be the right eye. Then we got two eyes. If you just move it out the way you slightly, then you can see it on the art board on the canvas. There we go. This picture is now ready trying to make because they've got each part of the picture we want to animate on its own separate layer. In the next video, we'll be looking at groups and textures to create our background scene.
12. Grouping Texturing and Blending Layers: way. Let's first used to transform arrow tool at the top, select each layer in turn, and then put them on the skull in the right positions. Then select the layers tool. I liked each one of the parts by sliding them to the right. Group them. Give them a new name, something original Light. Let's just say oh, originals again on because I like to keep a copy of the originals. I'm gonna adjudicate this layer and rename this one which will become the first frame of my animation. So I want to get my background more of a spacey field. So I'm gonna add a new layer, select a brighter color and from my brushes, choose a luminous brush like a pulse and then start experimenting with purple different colors to see what it looks like. And I can see what it looks like with different blends by clicking on the end on the layer . I like to experiment with different layers and different brushes and different textures. Use the luminous brushes quite a lot of different colors from the color wheel. I can also look at things like the nebula brush, increasing degrees in the size and just playing around with it to get that really Spacey field. And then if I play around with Bland's give it a new name, such as Nebula on their exactly what special effect I've used, I think like Assembly Pro creates one of these Abbasi can really experiment with to go for it, try out lots of painting brushes, textures blending. And then when you happy just given the name that means something to you, I tend to call it the effective use that I'm gonna group them war and call it a background scene that I'm gonna use that as the background from our animation. In the next video, I'm going to introduce you to the power of procreate animation assist, which would make animating really fun to do.
13. Enlist the Help of Animation Assist: Yes, indeed. Enlist the help of animation assist because you can turn this cluttered mess of groups from layers into this funky little animation. This animation or composition is made up of lots of layers, which are flattened, and some groups which expanding to other groups. I find it helps wherever possible to flatten layers within groups, because otherwise you could end up being too complex and running out of layers have also organized on my layers and foreground and background, ready to set it up in animation. So let's put on the animation assist what I like about the animation assistance. Once it's on, you get a little timeline full of your frames of thumbnails at the bottom of the screen, and you can never get through them either using the timeline at the bottom or the layers on the right hand side. Andi. Initially, each frame is either a layer or group will also include the foreground and the background elements. You probably noticed that some of the layers get cut off when you move the animation parts to the bottom on screen or off the screen races, so I tend to keep a copy of my original which I then keep away the time. I'll just switch it off when I don't need it in the animation. The timeline also comes with its own settings, and you can change things like frames per second. I tend to keep it quite low, Otherwise, it's gonna win through the animation of high speed. Then you got things that onion skin especially useful if you kind of doing drawing things also on the toolbar. If you tap on the first frame, you can turn that into a background, not be there throughout the whole of your animation. Let's take a look at this in action. You can now see it's all there, but the foreground is still on its own land, so let's go to the last frame. Turn that into the foreground element. Now your background and foreground is showing throughout the whole animation. Let's look at the playback settings that you get with the timeline, so the one shot just takes it through. One time the loop is on by default, and that just loops it through until you press the pause button again. And then the Ping Pong actress goes backwards and forwards backwards and forwards one last thing to remember is that animation assist makes it into a animation frame by frame animation, and it will take all your animation frames starting from the bottom layer right up to the top. Onda will also only include those layers or frames that have a tick next, so you can see my originals, which I said you need to keep a copy off hasn't got a tick next to it, so that won't be included in this animation.
14. Animating Your Skull Picture: Ah, just added some extra little features to the picture because I know this animation is gonna roughly last about a second with a duplicate all the skulls until I get to 12 layers. That's roughly around a seconds worth of animation. And then I'm gonna animate from the 12th layer down to the first layer. This means in the settings will have to adjust the frames per second. So if I do something like 12 or 13 I know or have roughly a seconds worth of animation. So on each layer I could start adjusting things. For instance, here I'm adjusting hat, just moving it left right with the mouth. I can look at the transform tool, which is the arrow, then looked my walk tall and just start manipulating it. If I want to zoom in on just painter my fingers, that will increase the size of decrease the size of the canvas, and then I can walk the mouth, just moving it up or down, so it looks a little bit distorted. Having the time line at the bottom is really, really good, because at any stage you could just review what your animation looks like as you're going through it and you can see what speeds like or we need to make changes. And I can just do things like rotate the eyes a little bit and just doing a fraction of the time on each layer. And with all the parts being on separate layers, I could not only move the eyes in that particular there, I could move something like the bow tie, just twisting a little bit so that when you're animating it, it looks as if it's turning around as you're going through. The animation on this is great fun is you're going through the layers and just changing little things. A little time just dropped the mouth here are scared the eyes a little bit. I'm even telling the bow tie on each layer. It just gives the illusion of movement and gives it a really fun looking animation. We want the skull to be emerging from the nebula, and the beauty of having alot parts of separate layers in one group is that you can move the whole group at a time, so gradually, as you're going through the layers, you can move the skull down until it actually goes off the screen, giving the illusion that when you play it back again, it will be going up to the top doing things along the way. You can an export as an animated GIF or is an animated video MP four Far. It's really easy to do in procreate. You look at the wrench tool in the top. Just tack on that, then in the actions, look for the share options, and then you can export is an animated GIF for an animated MP four. Far you can see a preview of your animation. Keep the settings at maximum resolution, just the frames for setting, then press the export button. It'll start exporting and have the option to share it to various places. We just want to save the video to our camera roll.
15. Easily Adapt Your Animation For Instagram: I think if you try to put your one second animation on instagram, you're going to end up in a whole heap of pain. But here's where procreate comes to the rescue. If you add a layer above your top one in this case above your 12 and then slide a layers to the right to select them all, that's one by one until you get to the final one, including that layer 24 then pressure thing and generally on a layers and drag them to the art board, then release and voila! You've got a duplicate set of layers. You really need to do this a few times in order to get enough layers or frames for a three second animation. Then when you finished duplicating or your sets of 1 to 12 plus the additional layer, just go through and take out the layers you don't want won't take very long and you'll find then you've got enough layers to export for a three second animation, which would be perfect for uses on social media sites like Instagram. So after you've exported this longer animation, you should no problem sharing it on social media
