1. Introduction to Procreate: Here I'm Jina and I'm a digital artist of ten
plus years and I create and sell digital twitch overlays and assets for small
streamers such as myself. Today we'll be
learning the basics of procreate at a
beginner level. Including how to use
different layers, different ph types
to make your line work smoother and
to stand out more. And just overall tips to make your workflow easier and
more fun for you to create. And for those of you who
don't know what procreate is, it's IOs exclusive app in the Apple App Store
that you can buy for a flat rate of $10 That is based on the price that I paid for it four years ago. I prefer procreate over any other digital program out there because of the
fact that it has an easy interface and it's
very easy for beginners to learn and everything is right there and just
it's easy to find. Also for the fact that you can just draw so smoothly on it, it's just a smooth interface. It really is also a
little side note, I have used a variety of
different programs such as Rita and Adobe Illustrator, but I've had more success
on Procreate than I have on any other
painting program. That's enough for
me though. If you want to learn more
about procreate at a beginner level and just learn more about the interface, stay tuned for the
rest of this course because I have a lot
of great information.
2. Learning the Procreate Interface: Procreate has a wide variety of features that are sometimes
very easy to miss. But don't worry, because I'm here to show you all those tips and shortcuts on how to make your work float a lot easier. First and foremost, you're going to want to create your canvas. And to do that, all you have to do is hit the plus sign in the top right corner and
either choose any of the preset dimensions
you've recently used, or you can create your
own custom canvas size. And as shown, when you create
your custom canvas size, you will be able to fill
out any dimensions in whatever measurement form
that fits your project best. Also, don't forget to
take a look at your DPI, which means dots per inch. I always try to set
the set about 600 DPI, so I can always guarantee
a higher quality image. Now let's get a better
understanding of what DPI means. Dpi, or dots per inch, is best described as essentially measuring your image resolution. This is especially
important if you're creating art to print and you
want a higher resolution. So what does that
mean? An image with 600 DPI versus 300 DPI is going to have
denser dots per inch, which means overall a
better quality image. Also, it means less
pixels upon printing. Now that we know how
to set up our canvas, I'm going to be showing
you a quick tour on the procreate interface just so we know where everything is. First off, if you look up in the top right hand
corner of your canvas, you will see a paintbrush tool, a smudge tool and eraser tool, as well as your color wheel. On your left side, you
will see a rinchpar, an adjustment tool,
your lasso tool, and your move tool for
your brush settings. On the side of your canvas, you will see that there is a slider for your brush size as well
as your brush opacity. And if you tap on the
circle in between the two, a variety of commands will
pop up on screen like so. And they are customizable
to another side. Note, your brushdark
settings can be changed, whether it is on the right
side or the left side of your screen depending
on your dominant hands. One of the biggest
reasons why I bought procreate in the first place is for its animation section. Reason being because out of all the animation programs
that I've personally used, I have found Procreate
to be, again, the most user friendly option
and budget friendly option. A quick overview on why I recommend Procreate's
animation future is because of how easy it is
to see and manage every single layer
or frame you create. If you're wondering where
to find this future, all you will have
to do is go up to the wrench bar and
click on Actions. And you will want to turn on the animation assist
for your project. After you turn that on,
this animation editing pop up should appear at
the bottom of your screen. This is where you will
find your frames and all of your other unique
animation features. And of course, I'll
make a separate course specifically talking about
the animation features soon. I also want to mention
that Procreate Dreams is coming out on November
22 of this year. And I am so excited
it's going to be a one time fee of 20 bucks
in the Apple App Store. And obviously, again,
it's IOS exclusive. And I could not be more excited, It can literally take all
my money for all I care. Now that we have an
understanding on the procreate interface
a little bit more. Let's talk about layers
and how to use them, and how to organize them.
3. Diving Deeper into the Procreate Layout: That we have an
understanding of the surface of the
procreate interface. Let's take a deeper look into the features you could be
using in your workflow. Let's take a closer look at the top left buttons
on your canvas. If you click on Actions
and go to Canvas, you will see the options
to resize your canvas. Animation. Assist for animation. Obviously drawing guide for your grid symmetry or
symmetry line reference. So you can add an image
without putting it directly on your canvas and flip
vertical or horizontal. And then your
canvas information. If you click over on
the adjustments tab, you will notice a longer list
of different adjustments, such as color adjustment
curves, blurs, and other fun filters
that you can mess around with and create unique
and recognizable pieces. It is also important
to note that when you choose one
of these adjustments, it will only affect the
layer you are currently on. Moving on to the lasso tool, it is honestly pretty self explanatory for the
fact that all you have to do is select
the space you want to edit on a
specific layer. Now the reason why this
tool is so beneficial is because when you go to select
the area you want to edit, you can't draw outside
of your selection. So it makes it easier
for whenever you are blending or decorating a
certain area on your canvas. The move tool is a tool that complements the lasso
tool quite nicely. Because if you're
using the lasso tool to move a specific spot, you have the options to resize
that piece as a free form, which is not a uniform scale. A uniform scale, you
can also distort your selection as well as warp it to select
a different brush. You can double tap
on the brush icon. And there are a wide variety of different brush sets that come with the program
upon purchasing. And you can always purchase different brushets and import
them into your procreate, as well as fonts between the smudge tool and
the eraser tool. They work very similarly
to the brush tool, whereas you can double tap
and choose which kind of textures you want to smudge or erase with
to match your style. A lot better to add a new layer, you will go to your layers tab up here and press the plus sign. And you can even change the background color as well
as make it transparent. And lastly, you have
your color wheel. And if you tap on
the coloring at the top right hand
corner and you look at the bottom
of the pop up, it will show you a variety of different color wheel options. Something to note about
this is that you can create your own color palettes
to better fit your brand, as well as just finding colors that better
represent your art.
4. Learning Layers and Organization: Layers are definitely very
tricky to learn at first, especially if you've
never used them before. So I want to start
off the segment by always organize your layers. I promise you it's going
to save you so much time. In the end, not only does organizing your
layers help you with finding certain
mistakes you may make during your illustration
process easier, But if you group
certain layers together that you'd like to
move or edit together, you can do so by
grouping them together. And you can move them all together rather than one by one. As far as the other layers other than your background goes, there are so many shortcuts that you can use on them to make your workflow a lot easier and to make it all
easier to manage. The first shortcut I'll be showing you refers
to layer opacity, Where if you were to tap the
layer box with two fingers, your opacity scroller will
pop up at the very top. And all you have to
do is slide to left or to the right to get
the desired effects. Now to alpha lock, instead of tapping the layer with two fingers
for the shortcut, you're going to
use two fingers to slide to the right on
the desired layer. And what this does
is it isolates every pixel that is on
that specific layer. I use this feature
the most when I have already finalized
the line art, but I don't like the
colors of the linework. I'll then use the alpha lock
feature to go over with the new colors that it only colors the line
work on the layer. To see all the different editing
options for your layers. You'll want a single tap with one finger at the targeted layer and a pop up list will pop up with all these
different layer tools. The background layer is always going to be there and it's up to you to decide
whether you want it to be colored or transparent. To make the background layer or any layer transparent or hidden, all you have to do is go over to a little check box on the side of the layer and uncheck it, and the layer will disappear. One thing that I have
struggled with learning in the past is layer overlays. This feature is located directly next to the hide Unhide box, so at the start of a new canvas, if you go to your layers, you will see the letter in
next to the little check box. This is where you will find
overlays such as multiply, color, dodge, soft
light, et cetera. These layer overlays
can help add some glowy highlights
with color dodge. Or even turn gray scale images into colored image
using soft light. And my last layers tip for this video is to access
the layers quick option. All you'll want to do is
slide to the right with one finger on the layer
and the options lock, duplicate and delete
will slide over. This feature makes it 100 times easier to
manage your layers, especially if you're duplicating or deleting layers constantly. Layers become so much less intimidating whenever you
allow yourself to use the different features and see how you want to use
them in your own style.
5. Class Project :): So in this course, we
took an in depth tour on the procreate interface and how to use layers as well
as how to use your brushes. I hope this course helps you get a better understanding
of where everything is in procreate and how to use everything
that is in procreate. For our class project, we are creating a
digital painting. It can be anything as simple as a flower or a finished
work altogether. That is for you to decide. But what I will
be looking for is at least one layer overlay
incorporated in your work. At least two brushes should
be used in your whole work. And don't forget your organized and renamed layers describing in one or two words what is on the layer for your
class project. All you have to do
is share down below in the class project
section below this course. Png MP four or gift. I love seeing all the
creativity everyone has to offer and it's truly
inspiring to me. If you found this course
in any way beneficial, don't forget to drop a
follow and also share this course with your friends
to help support what I do. Don't forget to
check out my socials all linked in my bio. And with that being said, I hope you have a
fantastic rest of your day and I will see you
in the next course. Bye.
