About This Class

In this first class of PLAY FLUTE GOOD Series we'll focus on Common Mistakes that I myself made when I started playing the flute, as well as mistakes a lot of my students made, throughout the years.

I will go more in-depth in those mistakes in future classes, but this class is really an overview, to give you useful information for creating good habits.

1. Introduction: Hi. My name is Milena. I have a masters in music. I have been teaching flute for seven years, and I've been playing flute since I was seven years old. So I've got quite some experience in this field. I thought I'm going to make a flute serious. And the first class I chose to be common mistakes because I needed to address those I when I started to play flute. I have learned a lot off bad habits, and over the years I really needed to get rid of those habits. Um, and as I was teaching flute, I saw that a lot of students do does have it. So before I even start to teach people how to play flute from the beginning on or, um, share any other knowledge, I just wanted to address those habits so you can always come back and check them out. So if you will happen to like my class, I would really appreciate it a lot if you followed my profile. Because then you can see my new glasses that I'm going to publish. Also, if you like my class, I would really ask you to leave me a review because it really helps Teoh to let people know that they are going to get some valuable informations from my classes. So that's about it. Thank you for watching. And, um yeah, I hope it helps. 2. The Right Way To Hold The Flute: There is one mistake that I oversee with beginners sold or also with people who have been playing for some time. Because if you kind off incorporate that habit from the beginning on, it's really, really hard to get a little bit so. And this is holding your suits like this not only looks bad, it also we were hurt at the time, so it doesn't really sound song differences, major, when you played the distal, you want your song to kind of flow through with this kind of are making the space more for the year actually come out. So in the beginning, what I suggest to do ISS When you put your foot on your mouth, you have to you extend your arms like this in front of you, and when you default on, you are trying not to move your head. The only thing that moves is your hands and you place the movies, so the beginning it's personalized. It's fluid is just slightly more obvious for security, but you really want to have it straight here. You don't really wanted Teoh change your songs. You wanted to be nice and straight here, so it's a big difference in a sound this Well, if you play like this are actually properly so you extend your arms with foot up and that's it Because of the beginning, why everyone does that is because the hands hurt at the beginning. You are trying to build your muscles on at the beginning. It will be painful a little bit too to really you know, get the endurance. Just like with running or any kind of sports, you need to give your muscles. So you're gonna be careful with that just because of the pain. You can start to do that because you will really create some pain here, and this is really, really uncomfortable pain. You really want that? 3. Flute Positioning: another mistake that people make include and I'll commonly to be closer is when they put the flute on. They don't do that as wrong, and they did it to try and find the right position. So this. It's also not very proper thing to do this on in next classes. I'll explain everything from scratch from complete beginners to a little bit more advanced . But this is one no way off putting the flute on the mouth. As I said, you extend your arms to put it on and you you start to play. I don't want to go into much detail right now because I'll explain that in next classes is just This is really if you already playing the flute, this shouldn't be the way you actually plays the flute on on your, um 4. Connecting Flute Parts: another very important thing ISS that a lot of people kind off. Forget about this. How important Days, too. Place your mouth based always in the same spot. Because if you have anything in a difference put spot, each time is going to make much difference in the way you play flute. So ah, lot of flutes. They have, like, little errors that help you to put the flip together. However, sometimes those arrows aren't reliable. So a good thing to do is to look at this last key and the last key, which is this one here. Uh, this one has to be in line with this whole now. So if I look at it like this, I'm looking for this que with this whole So right now I have it didn't need to be too much in this direction. However, it's like this. I say I have a pen here, so if you would place depend here, it's needs to be in. It's a great dislikes trade line. This is a This is a good way to tackle the beginning because it is very confusing, and I'm gonna show you. So let's say you this is in the right place right now. This is in perfect Klein. Yeah. So this one And they said, Nice line. And you go when you get yourself like this check because you can still see the basket. So but let's say no, have it correctly if I misplace it and it's a way too much in that direction. You too. And then a lot of people misplace it, and then they are trying to find their position. But then you can see hope how the whole flute shift So it hurts me here like it's just not not comfortable. So if you are practicing and you are seeing yourself looking yourself in the mirror, what you want to see is you see how I see the keys here is like lasted a soon as they see the shift like that. Then the mouthpiece is not in the right position. So you have to make sure everything is stick, huh? If that means like you have to check whether or not you have it in the line. Now the same goes for this piece here. When you put this piece together, so what? You're trying a lot of fluids also have arrows here on this side to put it together, and those are usually only to be more accurate. And I mean, it's not really for every Flutie depends like how cheap the flute Waas and some of them are really off. And also not all of us have the same hands. For me, it works. If I really put this, this key here, kind off into this space in here. So it's kind of the middle middle of this key. It's like kind of here. This would be a very important part off putting your foot together because it changes everything. If you put it on each time different, it's going to be so much harder to play it. 5. Position Of The Fingers: when you start to play the flute, it is kind of confusing in a lot of ways. So what we're trying to create here, like this hand You see how I'm having, like, this kind of shape. This is the proper right, Some because it really depends from a lot of factors. If you input your mouthpiece in a rider the right way, if you're holding a flute like there's it all impacts, like what will happen with your fingers and later on that will determine how fluent you can play. So what we're trying to do here is when you have it in the right way, with the flute on your mouth, like straight here, then you're trying to have, like, this kind of shape, huh? And fluid, kind of. If I go from the back flute kind of sit here and as you can see, I have the holes on my flute, which I need to cover. But a lot of students they would start playing flute without holes in in it. It's going to look like this. Yeah, And what they do is they do it like this because it still works. If you don't have holes still kind of works. So what? We're trying to really be careful that in the beginning we already do it properly. So here in this part, the flu delays a little bit on on the finger and in this part, so you have to make sure that at all times when you play flute, the fingers need to be ready above the keys at all times because later on, when you are going to play faster stuff, you need to have them ready. You don't have time to get them from here like this to their if you want to play very facile. If I didn't have to ride the bar of the keys, there is no way for me that I can play that so fast, because I would need to, like, do a lot of shifting and a lot of shaking To be able to do something that ended with sound terrible. He wins out fluent at all, so it's very important that at the beginning you learn it the right way, not this hands. This hand usually gets a little bit complicated because ah, lot of people get the pain or if a sad like the position is not correct from the beginning on, you don't do all the stuff that I said before that What will happen is a lot of Yeah, I should like this. So a lot of students, they would push this finger a little bit too much here. That that removes the whole flute like this, and then this fingers are not above the keys at all anymore. So the important part is that you think you're flotus sitting here on this part like this. And what happens also a lot is that students with me show you this in a better way. So the students do this, they kind of target and, like, the finger kind of sits here. Under no circumstances should the finger be like this. We're pressing on any of the mechanics here. So what I try to always imagine it's like I tried to imagine, like, I'm holding in here, here, in here, like I'm holding an apple. So that creates kind of this space. We need the space. And also the other thing is just two fingers in your right hand. Our best friends basically. So this the fingers are together, This one on this king and it's one below. And here you create a space where you can kind of holding apple. Same here. Here also in this hand, you need this space. Nothing is like meaning or hugging the flute because a lot of people at the beginning thing that the flu to fall down or whatever other feeling. But there comes in everything that I said before. You have to have it all the time. The same. You have to make sure you put the foot down together all the time. The same So it doesn't really do this a lot. But in any other details on how to even get here. If you're like a complete beginner, I'll do the next lesson that Holt even start playing food. But I just wanted to just all these things before hand, so people going with return to them and see if they're making those mistakes are 6. Flute Mechanics: And there is another thing that I would like Teoh talk about when it comes to fingers. At the beginning, I see a lot of students playing very like harsh because they think it won't sound if they don't like, really, like smashed those keys together. So you have to make sure that you're being gentle with suit A lot of times. The reason why people bring so harshly the flu is because mechanics is old. Some people get used flutes or they have been playing on it for a while. And the rule of Tom is that you should have like your flute. If you are playing it on a regular basis or if your flute isn't exactly new, you should have it, like checked out by specialist at least once a year. So they kind of adjust the mechanics because if it gets like out out of order, you will have to press certain keys more in order for them to. So, um so yes, it's very important Teoh to get it checked out, of course, But sometimes, even though you gotta check out, you still have this habit really pressing. The kids don't know the good thing is to practice. This is, too to exchange. The how I got rid of this habit is Can you play kind off a lot? You just something to play whatever song you have or scale or whatever. So let's say and it's a one time you played very loud and you try to press the keys very softly, and the second time you tried to played super softly, but you really smashed those keys down. So that kind of putting the state where you are aware of what you're doing and you can like , slowly start to practice. Distinct because this is a flip. Mechanics is very, very fine. And then you have to be careful that you are not like smashing it down all the time. Say we want to get rid of 7. Lips: the next thing ISS. It's about the lips. So when we play flute, we're trying to go look into this, smiling your position. You're going to smile here in the corners, and But I see a lot of students doing, which really makes a lot of difference. I'm going to show so supposed to be like, really you know, you, uh uh and so from the site? Uh, no. If you go too much into this, you see how bad it sounds. It's just like the position of lips. Now, let me do one in lower register. Uh, this is the kind of the right way, and then you dish it's even hard to get the sound that way. They have to be careful that you always playing the corners kind of like a corners and smiling. 8. Playing Too Fast: flute players. And in general, a lot of people who learn any instruments start to do is to play too fast too early. What I mean by that is you really have to take time in the beginning to establish your sound and really played a long notes, which all explaining next class is all about it. But if you don't take the time and you don't build your muscles and your breath and everything and you try Teoh start to play very fast, it will sound someone like that thing is over exaggeration. But it will start the song very bad. And you really want to, like, build your muscles in a way where it's going to be really sunny, really good and enjoyable to listen to and actually enjoyable practice. Because if he doesn't sound good, no one likes the practice. And I know that, like from my own experience, so all show you all the exercises in the classes that will come after this one in the serious that I'm making. But long notes would be something like that, Theo Ah, that would really build your stamina and endurance and your muscles, your hand muscles and all the other muscles will get used to flute playing, and this is fundamental, so being like able to play fast later on. 9. Tongue The Wrong Way: to play flute. I usually don't let my students to play with the tongue at the beginning down. Many T settle like way start like without the tongue just blowing into the flute. However, now a lot of students when they start to play with the tongue. They did this thing, and this is a little like only tongue like there is no like air support. What I mean by that is, if you play long notes, you have this like direction. That air is going Teoh. But if you only play tea all the time, it's everything is kind of separated, and a lot of people when they play with time, they do too much work. They start to shake their head on, like today's the tongue like it's the last thing that they will ever play. Everything is so over exaggerated. So when what happens is, just start to shake the flute with that. So basically, each time you shake your flute, each time you use your amber, sure, and is it like the worst thing that you can eat? You do because it's very at the beginning. It takes time to get the ambush you're going to really know what you're doing here on If you incorporate tongue too fast and you start to do all these crazy things, like everything shade like each time you play a note, you lose your amber. Sure. So I'll explain that in depth is we're only drawn. But I just wanted to mention that in case you already food, there is something to really watch out for. 10. Breathing: a lot off wind instruments, Azali singing people getting habit off, taking this panic breath or or like you think you have to breathing. You get gathering it and then everything is up here. Uh, we're trying to kind off from the beginning on kind of be aware of this habit. We don't want to even start doing this habit of the beginning because it's very hard to get rid of it. Um, so I always calmed before I start. So it's like one into and three and breath and start. So one in two and three, that kind of helps you like, you know, not doing that. It's really uncomfortable. And no one wants to kind of develop that thing about Brad like breath is supposed to be a natural thing. When we speak, we don't think about it. So this is what we're trying trying to be a bit flute playing, but at the beginning, unfortunately, wood flute, you have to think about it because it's just like psychological thing. You think you will need so much air. So it's better for you to starting gathering together this air off in order to be able to play, which is like causing more harm than good. So you really want to get, like, into that thing off off, taking your breath right before starting. However, in next classes, I'll explain more in step. You do have to kind of build kind of towards that, that you were able to do that. But if you're ready playing, that might be useful, useful deep there just yet. This is no hose on is no go so very like natural. And this is really something that needs to be practiced. It won't just happen like you know where it's just like bring it out. And all of the tips that I'm giving you are kind of dependent of each other, so you kind of need to put this puzzle together in order for all this to function. That's why I thought it's very important to do this lesson just to talk about common mistakes so you can be really aware off every single thing 11. Feet Position: when it comes to the feet position. A lot of students do stuff like this, and this is very bad in the floodplain because you really needed stability. So the general rule of thumb is this is 12 o'clock. This is kind of two o'clock, but it needs to feel that firm unstable. What you are also trying to avoid is to lock your knees, because that also doesn't X ability so slightly. Band 12 o'clock in two oclock and that you do it's supposed to feel natural and stable. The rare standing supposed to feel like you're doing some sort of dance ballet movements that's about it. 12. Flute Cleaning: a lot of times they figured out that students don't really clean their flutes after they finish playing, which is a very important part because, like flicking it too bad you can even in some cases, get moldy. And you really need to clean your flute and dry it to keep it in a good condition. So you take you through the part first. I really do. Mouthpiece doesn't really matter what you do first, and you have to clean it on the inside like this. And you want to really have a clock about this one. But you can really take any cloth that will absorb the water nicely on the incentive upload . Usually you kind off. Let me make it more clearer. You put the clock through this part like this. You put the club through like this and you think it over and then you go through the flute . But I just have this one instead. Yeah, you need something that really absorbs the water nicely. So you clean it on the inside first. Now I have this one, which I just basically run through the flute like this comes out within the other end of this etc. Here is this. And then I just take it through. Um you can also get the same as with as he did the upper part of if it sir. And then a very important part is also to clean it on the outside. Said you take individual pieces and you make sure you clean them nicely. And in this part of the very gentle when you are cleaning the mechanics is really fine. And you don't want to press on anything too much or displace anything. So here and this is how you clean your flute. I usually let it dry, uh, for a few hours so that it really like everything drives and then I would close it. I've seen students, students putting the clots on days. I'm closing it. Please do not do that. It will damage the mechanics. So the flute as it is closing on you, put your clocks in the pockets outside or anywhere else but on the actual flute, so that would be how you conduct it. 13. Final Thoughts: I didn't touch a lot off. Commonly states that flute player is making the beginning. However, I want to just stress one more point. That is when you're practicing focused on one thing at the time because you can drive yourself crazy If you're trying to correct everything at the same time or, you know, start with one thing and make the thing happen and then, like, take on another thing. Otherwise it's just too much on. You were just like you just lose yourself in it on It won't be enjoyable So one thing at a time and you should be fine. Thank you for taking this class and I hope it was helpful If he Waas please follow my profile. I will be posting a lot of fruit classes in next few months. Also, if you leave me a review below the class, that really helps me for the future students who might want to enroll. So yeah, Thank you. And I'll see you later. Bye.
