About This Class

Astute Graphics plugins are one of the best ways to improve the quality and speed of your workflow in Adobe Illustrator. In this course, I will be teaching you about the Phantasm v3 Plugin.

In the course you will learn how to use the Phantasm live effects to easily control hue, saturation, brightness, contrast and add halftones to your artwork. When working with embedded images, you can add many effects that are native to photoshop, directly to the images in illustrator without the need of going to photoshop to add the effects.

Also included in this plugin are color balance controls, levels adjustments, curves, desaturate, and shift to color. These are incredible tools that allow me to easily modify colors of artwork and everything in non-destructive which means I can easily go back to the original colors, or expand the artwork and have the colors permanently changed to the new colors.

Below is a list of things that will be covered in the course:

  • Brightness/Contrast Filter
  • Curve Adjustments
  • Desaturate
  • Duotone
  • Exposure
  • Halftone
  • Hue/Saturation/Lightness
  • Invert
  • Levels
  • Shift to Color
  • Temperature/Tint

1. Intro to Phantasm: Hi, My name's Josh Butts, and I'm a graphic designer in Utah. Welcome to the skill share course on a stew. Graphics plug ins. This course will be centering around the plug in phantasm. I really love this plug in for Adobe Illustrator because natively an illustrator, you can't work with images and apply effects with embedded images very easily. What I love about the Phantasm plug in is that basically allows me to use photo shop effects for illustrator artwork. In this course, I'll be showing you how I use phantasm to very quickly apply FEC's toe artwork, whether it's vector or embedded images. An illustrator One of my favorite aspects of this plug in, is being able to create half tones and illustrator. They're perfectly vector rised, and it's very quick when using the native illustrator half tone effect. I have a lot harder time because it rast arises the effect an illustrator, and it's a lot more difficult to bring that back to vector. I'm excited to share with us and the aspects of this plug in and hope that you'll find it useful, and I'll show you how I use in my everyday workflow to really make my workflow a lot faster 2. Brightness Contrast and Curve Effects: All right, So it's a start. You're gonna open up a Web browser, and then we're going to go to a stewed graphics dot com. I want to get here. We need to look for the phantasm plug in and so you can see this is ah had navigating their website. They're having a summer sale right now. If you go in a shop, this menu pops up and you can see right here is defend hasn't the 34 version three. So you can click on that and this will go to the plug in page that you can see. This is a little video that shows you in one minute some of the things you can do with it s so what you can do is download this 14 day free trial or you can actually just buy it right and use it for all your projects. So once you do that and install it, we're going to go to illustrator right here. And once it's installed, you're going to see under the effect drop down right here. You can go down to the bottom and you'll see phantasm, and these will have all the different effects that you can apply to objects and images and one of the other areas. I like to use this. If you open up the appearance panel, you can also go to window and appearance. Disappearance panel will show up and you can click on effects right here and add phantasm effects really quickly just from that panel. And so zoom back out. This is a map that I created recently for a zoo, and this right here is a lion that created for one of the exhibits. And, as you can see right here looks pretty good by itself. The colors are pretty close to what a lion would look like. And if I drag this over here into the lion exhibit, you can see that with a background. It's getting kind of hard to see. There's some contrast issues, and so what I'm gonna do is use the phantasm plug in to help with that. And so if I click on the lion, I'll go down here to my appearance panel and go to Phantasm, and I'm going to first look at my hue and saturation. Once I click on that, this is some advanced features right here. I'm gonna high those advanced options and move this over here. And let's change the color to match the environment a little bit better. So we want to add a little more saturation and maybe make him a little bit brighter. But I'm gonna work with my brightness and contrast to change that in a minute. So mainly I just want to get the lion to be a little bit more of a yellow color. And so if I uncheck this Phil, that's where it's applying. This affect is to the fills, the strokes, texts and embedded images. So this lion is made up mostly of shapes with fills, and the tail is a stroke. And so if I uncheck these two, then you can see the before and after differences. And so after with that color, it looks a little bit better. And so I'm gonna hit, okay? And one thing that's really nice about this plug in is it applies everything as live effects. And so if I uncheck this eyeball right here, that is gonna preview that effect on enough. And so it's not a permanent effect. It hasn't destroyed this object. I can always go back to those original colors I created. And so I really like that. I will add that on. And then I'm going to add another effect layer of phantasm to brightness and contrast. And now Teoh make a little bit more contrast between the lion and the background. I'm going to increase the brightness of this line a little bit and the contrast. And now you can see what it's doing is it's increasing that brightness and contrast of the actual colors built into the shapes. And so I can uncheck the fill again and the stroke and see the before and after. And now this lion looks a lot better with that environment, especially if I increase that a little bit more, but not too much. I still wanted to, like, pretty realistic. And then if I hit OK and zoom in that lion fits environment really nicely and I'm I've got his shadow over here. I'm just gonna drag right underneath him, and this is a really nice addition to this map, and all I had to Dio was very easily add those effects those life effects and you can see if I uncheck those. That's what looked like before and after it looks like a riddle line that was made for this neck. And one nice thing about having those effects is live effects. I can go back in the hue and saturation and I can adjust his huge just a little bit. Maybe I want a little bit more red tint in them and maybe a little more saturation. And then I can apply that Phil on and off to see the before and after. And I really like that something hit. Okay? And now I've got that nice gold, yellowish color lion in this environment, and it was very quick with those effects. And now what I can do that every, like is you can see how these air live effects, but I can't change the colors anymore because they're still those original color. So if I If I go in here and I use my direct selection tool, I click on this shape. You can see this color right here is a really dark, brown kind of color that I started with, and this is a nicer yellow that has better contrast. So if I click on the whole lion, that's group together and I go to object and expand appearance. Then it's going to flatten all those effects and merge the colors into the actual object. And so now if I use my direct selection tool and select that shape, I can see that color and drag on my great and panel right here. Um, and if you have great means, you can go in your window and ingredient and you can see this panel. These are the exact same light colors that you would see after you applied that phantasm effect. And so this is really nice that I can apply these effects very quickly and actually change the color of my artwork. 3. DuoTones: So now in this file, I have some of the different objects that I had used in that map separated out and we're going to mess is some of them. And so I'm going to zoom into this little area with some buildings, and part of the way I created this was using some of those effects You can click on it and we're gonna mess with some of these other different effects with the duo tone. And I really love this effect because I can really mess with colors and have some fun with creating do atones. And so the way it works is that has one day, fall color, and it has this little graphic showing where these colors are hitting on that hard work. And so I'm gonna say this default color too a little bit of like a dark red. And so now you can see the dark red right there and this part of the graph right here so you can imagine the X axis right here. That's the highlights, and these air the Dark's and then this line is showing, like the level of 0 to 100%. And so when it's completely white on the artwork. There's going to be zero amount of that color on the artwork. And when the artwork is this dark, completely dark, then it's gonna have 100% of that color in the artwork to, and then you can actually adjust this curve so I can have more of that color of here. I can have more that color on the artwork when it is this percentage of lightness to darkness, and so I can also use these little tools to flip it around. This tool will mirror that across the X axis so I can flip that around, and then when it's completely dark, it will show that there is gonna be hardly any color and vice versa. You can see that these are also some preset curbs right here. So let's say I want to flip that around and have a straight curve or I want to be the regular default curve. Then you can see where everything's lining up. One nice thing about this is I can start adding additional colors, so add that and then change the color. Say I want the highlights to be a really light blue color and so it's gonna do. It's gonna create that same graph in the same area. So these colors air basically just overlapping, and it's creating one color again, and that's not something I really want. So what I'm going to do is flip this so that when it said that the brightest point of the artwork there's gonna be 100% of that blue color. And then when it said the darkest point, there's gonna be 0% of that blue color and so you can create this really fun. Do atone artwork style using these two colors and these curves and everything is live on. So let's say some of these highlights aren't blue enough. So now I can just go into the highlight area and add a little bit more of that blue. And maybe I think that the blue isn't bright enough, and so I can go into this blue color right here, and I could brighten that up. I can choose a different a little different type of a blue, and so that's a little bit different colors, slightly green tinted and some things darks aren't dark enough, so I'm gonna go into the red layer and I'm going to make in the dark areas. I'm gonna add a little bit more of that color that dark on there. And so that adds a little bit more contrast. And you can see some of the really fun effects you can do with this plug in and this effect . And so now if I hit, OK, you can dislike this and see how these colors look on the artwork. And I can always go back because this is a live effect and uncheck that and it brings those colors back to what they originally were at. And so let's go down to one of these other objects and we can try it again with some different colors. And so I'm going to go back Teoh Phantasm, and go to my duo talent. And we're gonna make this monkey dark blue color kind of what is that right now? But this is gonna show up where there's those darks, and then on the highlights, we're gonna add another color, and we're gonna make that color a bright red color. We're gonna go up here and we're gonna make sure that these curves, like we looked at another one uh this top one. We wanted to be going up and then this bottom one. We wanted to start at 100% of the beginning and going down. And then we're going to add a little bit more of that, that red color up here. Oops. We're gonna add 11 1 of that red color and make this blue. We're gonna make it that a little bit darker shade of blue. And with this, I'm going to decrease the amount of the the dark blue on the highlights and increase it on the dark's maybe not that much. In fact, what you can do if you created some of these points on that curve and you don't like him, all you have to do is click on the point and drag it down and they'll disappear. And so then I can click down a little bit lower and at that again. And so you really have a lot of control of these curves in your artwork. And one of the things that happens with the duo tone effect in Phantasm is this is going to rest. Arise your objects. And so unfortunately, with this, you hit okay. And if you go to object and expand appearance. It's just going to flatten your image. And so I just know that some of these effects and phantasm you can expand animal experiment , expand that into your colors, but other ones it won't so, like brightness and contrast and the hue saturation. Those will expand into actual colors on your artwork. However, using this duo tone, it won't. So that's something to just keep in mind for using some of these effects in your artwork. 4. Photo Effects and Filters: So in this video, I'm gonna show you how these effects work with images that you place an illustrator. And so I'm going to just go online. This is, ah, dimension that I have taken. And so I'm just going to copy that directly from the browser and go into illustrator and hit command V or Control Very and pay studying here and then scale that down the way I did that was I hit s with scale tool and I just scaled it. And I don't have very used my selection tool and drag that around. And now, since I coffee that directly to the clipboard, this image has been embedded into this document. Now I'm going to drag it up here, and if I go file and place and if I place an image into the document, so click on this drive and I'll select an image, and I will just place this image into the document right here, and I can drag it in right there. So the difference between these two images is this image right here. If I go under window and links and if I drag in my links, you can see that this hotel image doesn't have that little icon. That means it is not embedded, it is linked. And this image has that little icon, which means it's embedded into the document. And so let's try this out, adding some different effects to that. So if I click on this and I go to Phantasm and hit, let's go to the curves and let's say, wanna increase these curves with this With this panel, it's a little bit different than traditional curves and Photoshopped because the graph is inverted and so all usually just click on that. So make sure I have my darks on the side of the graph on my highlights up here. And then you can just decrease those darks and increase those highlights. And that worked really well because this is an embedded image. And if I check the Phil and stroke, its not going to do anything or the text because this is an embedded images you can see right there, and so that's going to uncheck that effect onto the imagery there. And so if I hit OK, and now I'll select of this image right here and I'll try to do the same thing. Phantasm curves and all lower those darks and increase the highlights. But you can see nothing's happening because the image is not embedded. But if I hit OK and I go into the links panel and if I click on the menu and I say and bad images, then immediately it will embed that image and it'll apply the effects that I added to it from the phantasm in you. And so this can be really handy when you're creating artwork. A. Z conceded here. Some text I'm gonna add right here and say, I want that right up here for sale of making a brochure and I didn't want to have to go into photo shop. Another this image. I can just click on the image embedded and Abby's immediately in Adobe Illustrator and what's really cool about this? If I wanted to go back and, uh, export this image by itself and edit it in photo shop, then I can easily just click on that image and then I'll go to object and Rast arise. And what that's going to is gonna flatten that layer that curves later. That I added from Phantasm. And so I'm just gonna go into RGB because I'm an RGB mood and I'll just set this too high resolution and hit. OK, and now this is a fully flat image that I can now go into my links panel and say Unembedded . And then it's going to open up a location where I can save this as a Photoshopped file and soldiers hit save. And then I will bring in the folder that I say that, too, and I'll just double click that and it's gonna open a photo shop, which I can then drag over into this window right here. And you can see that those effects have been implied to that image. And now I have the image in a photo shop, which I can add layers, and I can. I use my brush and start brushing in some different colors, and I can fully customize this, which I can Then I'm not going to say that, But, um, I can then bring that file back into Adobe Illustrator update the link or whatever I need to, and I was able to very quickly have a lot of control over images that are in Adobe Illustrator By using the phantasm effects and so most of these effects work really well with those embedded images I can select with this image. I'm going to go Teoh, do you saturate and bring that this panel? I consider Teoh whatever. Whatever I need Thio going to hit OK and it very quickly turned that into this grayscale image. And I can just keep layering these effects as much as I want. I can go into shift to color and then this penalty pulls up. I can add a color that I wanted to shift this whole image to. Let's let's get this a nice blue color and this is my bar. Where is showing how much of that color I'm adding to the image so I can shift the whole image, that color and what it does is it pushes every pixel to that color, so the dark pixels is gonna bring up to that color on the light pixels will bring down. And so if I want to add just a slight cast to the whole image, I can just use this shift to color effect and put that on that image. And once I have it where I want, I can start adding in my vector shapes around the image, uh, for the design I want to create, Um, so I can create, you know, some black shapes right here and then all dragon this text appear and you can see and I'll get that together and you can see very quickly an illustrator With these embedded images and phantasm, you can create some really fun effects and very quickly get to where you need to be without having to go into Photoshopped. 5. Halftones: All right. So for this video, I'm going to show you one my favorite aspects of the phantasm plug in which, as you can see over here, you're going to the phantasm effects. And there's this half tone affect right here. And I'm gonna show you that with one of these illustrations I've done, I'm gonna grab the polar bear and I'm gonna drag it down here and zoom in and show you just a example right here. If I create a box and I have a great day and already applied to that box And so if I go into the phantasm and half tone, then it's gonna pull up this dialog box. And I really love the capability that a stew graphics is built in for half tones using phantasm because it gives you as much flexibility as you could really want with half tones . What it does is it uses circle shapes to create 1/2 tone patterns. So when you expand this, these will be perfect circles as vector shapes. Now, illustrator will do this too. Click on here and go to effect, and then go down to pick slate and I can say color half tone and I can drag this over and this dialog box is not near as capable, is the other one. And you have to zero out all these other channels and add just one channel and let's say 50 . And when I hit OK, this adds a lot of different colors, or when you said it to just one single color, and this is all as a bit mapped image. And so when I expand it object, expand appearance and then I have to go to Image Trace. And then all these are weird shapes and they're just not very clean. And so I'm going to undo that a few times and go back to effect and phantasm and open my half tone panel for Phantasm and you can see this gives me a lot more control. One thing I really like you can do if this is creating undercoat already so I can click on that undercoat and I can turn that. Let's say we want it. Ah, dark green color and it's gonna add that dark green. And then I can change the color of these half tone dots to whatever I want. Let's at a bright green to that and it It instantly creates this pattern that when I hit OK , and then I go to object, expand appearance. This hasn't been built as a bit map. It was building those as vector shapes and so on. I zoom and these are all perfect circles. I can use my direct selection tool. I can move him around and have a lot of control over that. And so I'm going to go back and undo that. And I'm going to show you a few more of the things that you can dio with this effect. So open that back up and show you some of different things. You can change the DP I. So if I change that to 30 it's going to add a lot more circles here, as you can see right there. And I can change the pattern to a lot different patterns, which is something I really love being able to do. You can create FM pattern. As you can see, it has a few different Floyd Steinberg or Bayer, and it just adds in different shapes and patterns for the way that half tone set up, I can drop. I cannot that to 60 and click on that and see the different patterns that creates. I can also change this to a radial pattern, and I'll create this radio halftime pattern that I can still go in and mess around with these different shapes. I can change the angle of it. So as you can see, the angle of these dots starts changing. Or if I go under grid, I can change the angle of that grid. And actually, I can change the type of grid. I can have a alternating, and so instead of the dots lining up in a perfect row, they're alternating in between each other. As you can see when I, uh, hit, okay, and then I use them in here. There are all in these different rose right here. And so we go back into my appearance panel and double click on that effect. And so now I can change it up a little bit more. This is ah dot gain panel. And so this is the curve that's gonna affect how much the pattern is effective. And so if I drag that up, it's going to create a lot sharper contrast between the light and the dark areas of that halftime pattern. And so I can change that and add this curve up a little bit more. So there's a lot more contrast down here. But then it evens out and then more contrast up here. And so, as you can see, there's a whole lot of control that you can add with this. Um, I also like in the dot properties you can change some some different aspects to this. There's some preset, the shapes built into it. You can use squares or lines and add a lot of different effects, and then you can change the angle of these. So let's say I want this pattern and lining up that way. You can easily change the angle that those lineup, and now I can go into the scale and you can either make these proportional. I like to keep him as linked together, and I'm gonna add that to 1 50%. And then that's gonna make those a lot larger, and your DOT game is going to start affecting that too. So if I get rid of that dot and drag us down a little bit, then you can see proportionally these they're going to get smaller because the dot game is lower in the darker areas in the lighter areas. And I can say that curve, two straight lines. So it's going to be a more direct change in between where it changes and so I can have this like a really sharp contrast right there. Or I can have it like, really smooth and sharp really quick in that one area, or I can just, ah, drag these out and have it smooth the whole way. Now, one last thing that I want to show you in this panel is this selected symbol and the character option. So if I click on character, it's going to add all these different characters as different sizes for the halftime pattern. And I have a lot of different options. I can click on options for these characters, and then I can go in here, and it'll either pick random text and you can choose a typeface. So let's say in the static face, I want to use Gotham narrow, thin, and I want to repeat a certain phrase. I'm going to say polar bear and hit OK, and now it's just repeating this phrase that I can go in and change the angle of these letters so that their readable and as you can see, the letters are all really big over here and smaller over there. But since this is a word, it's having these lines in it. And so I'm gonna go back in, and I'm going to change this up a little bit. Without that space, I'm just gonna make it all caps and I should fix some that. Yep. As you can see now, it's all fitting a lot better. But you can still see what it's saying in the text, and I can go in and mess with my daughter, gain again, have that make that smooth and make that a little bit bigger over there and go back into these options, and I'm gonna have this as a bold fund. So let's go. Gotham narrow black and hit, OK, and now it's gonna have a lot more contrast And this halftime pattern. And now this other thing that you may have seen selected symbol is gonna allow you to create your own shapes and add them into here. So I'm going to cancel on this and I'm going to create a fairly simple object. So let's just create a square. And I have illustrator toe automatically create new shapes based on my previous appearance . So just hitting D and that's going to set that to the regular appearance and then create no Phil on his shift X, and that's going to swap the Phil and the stroke. So now I have the simple shape and will hit control C and then shift control V or Command V and an option and ah, shift And I'm gonna rotate that and this is a simple star shaped biologist. Go over here and emerge that together with my Pathfinder panel and get rid of that. And now I have this nice little starship that I can use as the pattern for that. So if I drag this into my symbols panel and I'm going to set that as a graphic and all keep of dynamic symbol, that's fine. We'll hit OK, and then they'll add it into the soul panel right here, and then I can just do it. That and now I have this object in my symbols panel, which I can make sure I have selected, and then if I click on this pattern. I can go over to the Phantasm halftime effect and then I'll go under shape and click on selected symbol, and you may not be able to see it very well now. But if I increase the size to 150% we'll make that a lot bigger, and I'm going to increase the dot gain on the dark side right here. And then I'm gonna hit. Okay, now, if I zoom in, you can see it's using that object that created that shape to create this halftime pattern . And so if you have a really specific idea in mind for you halftime patterns, then that's a really awesome way that the phantasm plug and can really give you a lot of control of your half tone patterns. And since this is all alive, I can click on that and they hit G for migrating tool and I can still go on move this grating around. However I want and I can even go into my great aunt panel and change it to radio. And so there's really awesome that I can just have so much quick control over this and then I'll have B and then zoom out and you can see how I was able to really quickly create that half tone pattern. And it's a live shape. And so it's not using a whole lot of computer processing power right now because it's just computing the shape and rendering the effect in there. And so I'm just going to delete that, and I'm going to go over here to the polar bear and show you some of the ways I like to mess around with. Adding half tones to character illustrations is, Ah, one first way I'm gonna show you right here. I will copy this and then I'll go into photo shop and I'll create a new file house, the space it. Let's just click, click on the size, and then I will just pace that object into photo shop. And I'll just use the pixels because that's easiest. And then all I use option or Ault and resize that up. And I've got this reference and I can go in and start brushing in where I want some halftime patterns. And so all ago, right here, I click a great new layer and then all use my brush tool hit B and make sure it's on black and go to my brush presets and I'll just make sure it's a soft brush and then all hit. Uh, about 30% is good. And then I'm just gonna go in here and you can see that dark shadow right there. Well, let's say I'm gonna have 1/2 tone heading right in there and ah, and so I'm just gonna go brush in some, uh, dark areas right here. And I'm not too worried about getting over here cause I just want this half tone pattern to show up right here on his shoulder and have an extra dark over there, and I'm gonna hit one. And so that's going to say that 10% on my keyboard, and I'm just going to brush this in right here, and that looks pretty good. And maybe to make a little bored more visible for myself Later, I'll just hit me for my eraser tool and all right click. And I'll set the hardness to, uh, like 90% and then I'll just go any race, This side right right here. It's at least now I know kind of a reference of where that shoulder is. And now what I can do is copy this. So I'm going to hide the polar bear and hit shift option or all command or control he and it's going Teoh, merge all these layers into a layer on top, which I can then had Controller command A and then control or command C and copy that. And then I'll go into Illustrator and then I'll just hit coming under control V and had s to scale that down looking drag to scale that down here and skilled up just a little bit. And so now I can drag it around and see exactly where I want to put this, Um, one thing ideo with us to see where it is is I'll just hit capacity and go from normal. Teoh say multiply. And now, if I zoom out a little bit, I can really see where I want that have time to be on that shoulder. And so let's say it was over here, but it's gonna be able to get bigger than that. So Right, that looks pretty good, Teoh, where we want that shadow tow line up. And now all you need to do is go up to the effect and that same half ton effect. Teoh this shoulder And let's say we want to screw Ed. We want this to be lost. Smaller, these dots. So I'm just going to change the 18 d p. I to 30. That should make those smaller and a little high resolution. In fact, I'm gonna make that even more. 45. And I don't want this to be so black over there. So I'll go to where my darks are, and I will drop those down a little bit. In fact, I'm gonna drop him down a little bit more. But now it's taking off too much of the highlights. So I want that to be a little bit more smooth right here. So we're gonna add that back in, drop that down and try to give us the smooth as we can right there. And so now we have a pretty nice little pattern. Maybe I can even scale the with down to 70%. So we've got more of ah, half tone dot pattern right here, and then I'll drag these back up a little bit right there. In fact, I'm gonna get rid of that and I'll just drag this back up. Now you can see there's a really nice halftime pattern covering right there on his shoulder . Then if I just hit okay, I can zoom in here, and that looks really good. So what I'm going to do is, uh, just like that. And then I'm going to shift control and left bracket and send that to the back. Just make sure it's out of the way and I'll click on this polar bear and his shift control or command. Gee, make sure I have it all in group and shift control right bracket to bring that that shoulder to the firm. And then I want to create a clipping mask on this. So I'm going to copy that control, see and then grab that have time pattern and then bring it back to the front shift control or command and right bracket. And then, if I hit shift control or command V, that's going to paste that shoulder right on the front, where I can then, like on this halftime pattern and hit either controller Command seven and I can also just go up to object and clipping mask and hit make masks and then eclipse that halftime pattern right in there into his shoulder. And if you just go to Photoshop and Russian, all these different areas where you won't have to impediments, that's one really nice away where you can get accurate halftime patterns exactly where you want and the advantage to that is you can see this have to impending stretches all the way around here and down there, and it uses That's slightly faded out Black s. So I had a lot of control over it. If we go back here to Illustrator, I'll zoom out and I'm gonna show you a little bit easier way of doing that directly in Adobe Illustrator. So I like to use the blob tool, a Soviet shift to be that's going to open up right here on if I right, click that the Blob Brush tool. And I'm just going to go in here already and make sure I hit uh of that selected is black, and I'm going Teoh, reset the reappearance on this, make sure that's reset to default and then have black as my main color. And then I'm gonna go in here and start brushing in where I want some of these shadows to be on. So this is getting pretty close to his back leg where I want it. And then I will click on that and in one of my other tutorials, you can see on the screen right here this course on Silas, Um, that I talk about this is a panel from S Geographics. Also taken very quickly. Go into these effects and then I can add I cannot a gosh and blur effect and very quickly blur that object out. Or you can also, if you don't have that plug in, go under effect, and then blur, and then Goshen blur, and then this panel comes up and then you can control how much blurriness that shape has on it. And so for this I'm just going to use a stylus and panel because it's really easy infest for me to control the blur on this object. And so I'm gonna bring it up a little bit, Teoh little bit more of a blurriness right here like that. And then I'll hit shift be again. And I want to add just a little bit more black into that shape so I like this right here and they'll have a make sure have that selected again. And then I'm gonna go up to my color and set this to hue saturation brightness, and make sure that's is black as I can get it. And now that I have a plenty black on exactly where I want it, I'm going to go up to effect and phantasm and open up the half tone. And now it creates 1/2 tone on the difference between what I'm going to do with this is I'm gonna set this as a preset for the rest of the halftime patterns around the polar bear. And so I'm gonna set this backup Teoh 35 and make sure that I have the size that 70% on this afternoon pattern, and that's actually looking pretty pretty good for what I want. So I'm gonna here, okay? And now they have this halftime set and ready to go. I'm going to drag us into my graphic styles panel, which you can also just go up to window and graphic styles. Open this up and then if I go back to appearance, I have all those effects apply to this and I'm going to select the back leg of that polar bear and hit copy control C control V paste it and do the same thing with this Control seven or right click and make clipping mask. And we've got that pattern already clipped right into there. And so for doing the rest of the polar bear. One thing that I really like to do that makes it really fast is, since I've already got that set is the appearance. I can go into my direct selection tool on Select that object that I have that appearance in that graphic self set to, and I can make sure that in my appearance panel I have new art has basic parents. Make sure this is unchecked, and whatever artwork I had most recently selected is going to be the most recent graphic style that'll apply to any new artwork. So naff I an unclipped everything and hit shift B. I can start just brushing at halftime patterns anywhere I want, and so this is really cool way that you can just add these halftime patterns all the way throughout your artwork really quickly. And so I've got that. How I want right there. I'm going to hit. Click on this polar bear control. See a shift control V click on that control seven. And I've got that clipped right on there. I'll do the same with this front half tone Control X. Click into this object James. Click into this object and then shift control V that into the object to check out of that and you can see really quickly. I have now added all these halftime patterns that are all very dynamic into this polar bear really quickly. And so that's a really nice way that you can go in and at halftime patterns using the stew graphics phantasm plug in. And so I really hope you enjoy this course. This is the esta graphics phantasm plug ins that we've been looking at, and I really love all the different capabilities of this plague in Gives Me for Adobe Illustrator. It's one of my go to plug ins for adding effects, and I really love it, and I hope that you have been able to learn a lot from it, and that it will help you out to with a lot of your projects and, if you like the course given a review so that other people can enjoy it too, 6. Phantasm V4 Update: all right. So one of the new things in phantasm version four that we're going to be looking at is under window. And if you go down to Phantasm and there's this phantasm panel, and this is really nice in Phantasm version for because it makes adding a lot of those effects a lot faster to add with just a simple click of a button and you can easily remove those two. So if I drag in my appearance panel, which you can also get by, going to window and appearance is going to show me all the effects that have applied to my objects. So if I click on um, let's say this. Ah, tree right here. I want to have a little bit of variation in the colors of some of these different leaves. So I'm going to select all of these. And what I like to do is add some variation using scripts. So if I go under file and scripts, then I have this script that I saved from online. Um, and it's called Very Hughes, and if I click on other scripts, I can go find on my desktop where I saved this script and you can see this website right here. That's where you can find that script also. So if I go to scripts and very Hughes, then I can. Then, as you can see, there's this area says it. That script is only gonna work in RGB so I can see him like a right now. So I need to go under file and make sure that my document color mode is RGB on. So now I can go back down to scripts and do that again. Very Hughes and I want to vary it a lot because I'm gonna push all these colors back to a certain shade of green. So let's say 100 is how much we want to go from 0 to 100 is the creation, and that's gonna give these branches all the source of these different colors. But now I can go back into phantasm and there is the option right here where it says push everything to one color and so I'm going to select a color. Let's go, you know, kind of Ah, green something. Maybe with a little bit brighter green and then hit. OK, now the further I drag the slider over, and you can see what I did. Once I selected that, it automatically added this effect to this group of of leaves. And now there's an X button right by that effect, which I can easily hit X, and it removes that effect. But I'm going to hit control or command Z and undo that. And then I'm going to drag the slider over a little bit more, and now you can see what this has done is added. It's a nice variation of colors with all these leaves, and then it is drug all those colors towards this green color. The thing is really nice about this, too, is I can click on that green color and change it at any time, and it's still gonna have a little bit of variation, those leaves. But they're all still going to be that green color. I'm so let's let's make that a little darker, actually, and push that a little bit more so we have a little less variation, and then that looks good. So I'm going to group that, and now I've got a nice palm tree right here with some some good variation in those leaves . What's Also new in this version of Phantasm is a new update to the way it handles half tones. And this is a really amazing update that makes the way how you work with half tones a lot better in this. So we're gonna look right here at these at the cliffs on the this little island, and we're gonna add some shading on one side of it with half tone. So I'm going to Teoh un group this by hitting shift control or Command and Z and I'm going to select this area right here and then hit, um, copy command. See? And I'm going to pace it in front of the same object. You can go under, edit and paste in front or just hit command f. And I've got this right where I want and I'm going to add a Grady int. So let's open up the grading panel by going on the window and then radiant. And you can see I've got this great ian panel, right? And I'm just going to click here because since I want 1/2 tone on top of it, then ah, black and white is going to serve the purpose of that really well and I want the dark area to be coming over here, so I think that's about where I want the shadows to be. In fact, I might actually have a brighten up a little bit on the other side. So clicking here. And so now it's on Lee really going to be adding the shadow on that side of it, and it's gonna brighten up again. And then all of this click on half tone and what it does you can see. It's adding that half tone pattern in in the dot dialogue, but you'll notice a few things were different. First off, you'll see that around the edges, the half tone kind of fades out instead of using where in the legacy algorithm, it kind of goes outside of the bounds of that object. And that was always causing problems for for artwork because you'd usually have to click OK and then copy the object and then make it into a clipping mask. But this is very easily made it so that when you're creating objects and you need the halftime to fade out towards the edges of the object, then it's going to look a lot nicer. Um, one thing that is also really nice about this is I can click use legacy algorithm to bring that back. Say, for instance, in object like this, I don't really want to fade out because I want it to fill the whole area of this object. So I'm going to click you legacy other Than But instead of having to create my own clipping mask, there's this clip to object option. So I can very quickly do all these things within this dialogue, and it's not cumbersome. And it's very quick. And now I have to do is click on color and I can select, you know, kind of a darker brown color that I would want to be the shadow on that on this cliff area . And I'm gonna going to increase the dp I to 25. This is going to add a little bit more detail right there. Um and I'm gonna change the color, bring it up a little bit brighter se right up here. So it's a little less obvious of a shadow. And now if I hit OK, I can zoom out and you can see how I was very easily able to create a halftime pattern. And if I drag that out, you can see it's very nice clipped to this object. So if I undo that and come back here, we can do that same thing to these other objects. It command C and then command F to paste in front and with us all have to do is he's my eye dropper and then select. It's going to select that same Grady in color, and I'm just going to pull out that white and drag this over here and change the direction of that. And now what I can do that's really nice is, since I've already set the radiant on that, I can just drag this into my graphic styles panel. And then I can click on this one and click. Click on my graphic style for that, and I'll have to go and redo the grading on here again. But now I already have that style set very quickly, Teoh to add to all these different areas on on the beach sand. So all in all, this is a really cool update for phantasm version, For for this plug in where you have quick access to all of these panels, you can brighten things up really quick. Use your contrast and then I can still always just going delete different effects. As you can see that updated right there. I'm gonna undo that, though I can I can very quickly change things around and it's very intuitive. One of the things we haven't looked at with the update for the half tone engine right here is some of the different options for using graphic styles and the shapes. One of the new updates isn't under dot properties. If you click on shape where so circle, you have immediate access to all these symbols where before you had to go actually select the symbol. So that is something. Everything that is really nice and make makes things. It makes a little bit faster working with us. So all in all, the update to Phantasm Version four has made some really great updates and changes that will help your workflow a lot. So thanks for watching
