About This Class

Join me, Maja Faber, a surface pattern designer, and online educator, as I teach you how to create patterns using Procreate and Photoshop.

In this class, you'll learn how to draw your motifs in Procreate and create the pattern by using the Pattern Preview tool in Photoshop. But that’s not all! I’ve also included how to create your full pattern in Procreate by using one of my popular pattern layout templates, which is included as a free download here in class, and then finish the file in Photoshop - which is perfect for those of you who like me love to create the full pattern in Procreate but might once in a while need a layered PSD file.

Suitable for all skill levels, this class requires only a basic understanding of Procreate and a desire to learn how to take your Procreate patterns and make them into professional Photoshop pattern files.

1. Intro: Hi, I'm Maja Faber. I'm a surface pattern designer and online educator who have created thousands of patterns in Procreate. One common question that I get is, if it's enough to only use Procreate for pattern design or if you need to use other apps like for example, Adobe Photoshop as well? Over the years, I have discovered that many times you actually don't need another app. Nowadays, exporting a JPEG file from Procreate is often enough for all printing techniques. But of course, this depends on the purpose of your pattern. If you work with, for example, a producer, a printer, or a client who prefer to have a layer desktop file instead of a flattened JPEG. I created this class for you. In this class, I will guide you step-by-step of drawing the motifs in Procreate and then create the pattern in Photoshop. But that's not all. I've also included how to create your full pattern in Procreate by using one of my popular pattern layout templates, which is included as a free download here in class. Then we will finish the pattern in Photoshop. This is perfect for those of you who like me love to draw the full pattern in Procreate. But might once in a while need a layered PSD file. If you watched my classes before, you know that I love to include freebies for you. In this class, you will not only get the pattern layout template, but also two free Procreate brushes and one Procreate color palette that we will use to draw our motifs and create our patterns. If you enjoy these resources, check out my pattern toolkit. The ultimate set of resources for pattern design made easy in Procreate. Go-to patternrebels.com/pattern-toolkit to read more and get your hands on the pattern toolkit today. With all of that said, let's get started with the class. 2. Your Project: Your project in this class is to create the pattern using Procreate and Photoshop by following the instructions that I share in the class. You can choose if you want to create the full pattern in Procreate and finish the file in Photoshop or if you want to draw the motifs in Procreate and create the pattern in Photoshop. Make sure to share your project here in class. I can't wait to see what you create. 3. Free Downloads: I've included some free resources for you to download here in the class. You will get one free Procreate color palette and three free Procreate brushes. There's two brushes to draw with and one pattern layout brush that I will show you how to use in the class. The brushes to draw with are the tapered texture, which is a really nice taper textured brush. Then you get this square and texture. This is one of my favorite brushes to draw with. They have the same type of texture, but you get the tapered brush and the square brush. The last brush is the bold flowers. This is a pattern layout template and I will show you how to use it in class. It's not a brush to draw with, but it's actually a template for a pattern. You just stamp the brush and here you'll get a template for you to place your motifs on. To download these resources, download the PDF here in class and tap where it says Tap Here to Download. This will take you to a page on my website where you will need to write in your name and your email address and tap "Unlock". That will redirect you to a Dropbox folder with your files. Tap one of the files and then you tap "Download" and "Download" again, and tap back to the other file and into that one and tap "Download". I'm using Safari as a browser, which means that I have this little download symbol over here. So I either tap that or I tap into my files folder on my iPad and the downloads folder and I install the files just by tapping the color palette file. Then just head back to your browser and tap the brush set file. Now I have downloaded one more of those brush set files, as I already had that one installed. That is how easily you can install your brush set and new color palette in Procreate. 4. Make Pattern Action: The very first thing that we will do is to create a new canvas so tap the plus in the top-right corner and New canvas over here. My standard size for creating patterns in Procreate are 3000 pixels in width and in height. I will keep the DPI on 300. That will bring me a maximum amount of layers of 204 because I have a huge storage on my iPad. If you have 50 layers, that's good. If you have more, that's even better. The color profile that we will choose are color profile, RGB, and the first one under sRGB. Then I tap Create. So here I have my canvas and now it's time to create some settings to be able to create this pattern later on. We are creating a pattern with a method that I call the selections method. So we need to save selections to be able to make an action out of these later on. So just follow along with me here. It's a really quick move and we will just make some settings that we can use later on. The first thing that I'll do is just to drag out my color palettes on the canvas. Then I will just choose a color and tap and drag to fill a layer. I will tap to add a new layer, the plus in the Layers panel, and choose a different color. You don't need to choose different colors here, but it's easier to see your different squares if you have different colors on different layers. So I've added a new layer and I'm tapping and dragging a new color to that layer. So basically, I'm filling different layers with different colors. We need four layers for this. So you should have 1, 2, 3, 4 squares with different colors. Then I can turn off my color panel over here and just zoom out a bit so that I have my full squared canvas and can reach the corners. The next thing that I will do is just to tap the first square layer, layer number 4, tap the arrow, and then I will tap in the top left corner node, which is this blue one. Make sure that I have the chain symbol tapped in, and I will type in half of the size of my canvas size. So I have 3000 pixels, I will type in 1500 pixels. This will half the size of my square and it will perfectly align it to the top left corner. Next I will tap the layers panel again, and I will tap the next layer, the green one, tap the Transform tool and tap in the top right corner node, and write in half of the size of my canvas, which is 1500 pixels. I will tap the next layer, the yellow one, and tap in the bottom left corner node and type in 1500 pixels. The last layer, blue one. Tap the Transform tool and tap the bottom right corner node and type in 1500 pixels. So now I have four squares and I need to select the first one. So I select the layer 4, tap the layer, tap select, which will bring you the selections tool. Here you tap, Save and Load. A common mistake here is to have the color fill selected so make sure that you don't have the color fill selected here and tap save and load and tap the plus, which will save this as selection 1. Then I tap the layers panel again, tap my next layer, select that one, save and load, and tap the plus. Then I tap my layers panel again, select my next layer, the layer 2, yellow one, select Save and Load and the plus. Layers, panel, layer 1, tap Select, Save and Load, and the plus. So now I have saved all of these selections. I can just tap the selections tool to deselect everything. Then I can just delete all of these layers 5. Using the Pattern Layout Template: First things first, let's start by using the pattern layout templates. So this is a Procreate brush, that is a stamp, that we will use as a guide to create our pattern. In this class, we will use it as a guide to create our motifs, that we later on can create the actual pattern in Photoshop. But we will also use it to create the full pattern in Procreate. So just follow along in this class, and I will show you both of these techniques. The pattern layout template is a part of my full pattern layout template, which you can get in the pattern tool kit. You can check out patternrebels.com/pattern-tool kit to learn more about that, if you enjoy using this pattern layout templates. But for now, let's start to use it in this class. So tap the bold flowers, and I usually go for black as my color here. For Canvas size of around 3,000 pixels, which is what we have here, I'm using around 60% in size for this brush. It's important here that you don't place this stamp at the edge of your canvas, but we need to place it inside of our canvas. Just tap one time, and you have around 60% in brush size to place your pattern layout stamp in the center of your canvas. Then you tap the "Transform tool" and tap "Fit to Canvas". The next thing that we will do is to tap the "Layers panel", tap the "N" on that layer, and drag down the opacity to around 15% or 20 %. So that you still can see the template in the background, and use it as a guide. But we will be able to draw on top of the template on a new layer. When we start to draw our motifs, and when we start to create the pattern in Procreate and in Photoshop, you will see how I'm using this template. But for now, this is all that you need to do in this lesson. 6. Draw Motifs: The next thing that we will do is to draw our motifs. A lot of times I sketch the motifs, but in this class, when we're creating this bold type of flowers, I wanted to show you how I do that without sketching. Sometimes I sketch and sometimes I just draw the motifs straightaway. Let's just get started. The first thing that I will do is just to drag out my color panel and tap the palette, and I have my blue-green dream color palette over here. I'm just going to place my canvas on the right here. On tap layers panel, tap the plus to add a new layer. Let's just rename the first layer to templates, or guide, or layout, or whatever you want so that we know that that is on that layer, and then I will start to draw some flowers. I'm going to use the square and texture for most of the part of this pattern. Maybe all, let's see. Choose grand text here, and then I'm going to select this lighter blue color. With this square and texture, let's see, around three percent in brush size. We will just start to draw our flowers. I am going to draw some really simple floral shapes. I don't want them to go too far outside of the circle here. Maybe something like that. And I'm just going to fill them in and get this really nice textured look with the square and texture brush. This is actually one of my favorite brushes to use. All-time favorite brushes to use. I'm just filling in the first flower here and then it's time to continue. What I want to do now depends on how much storage you have on your iPad. Basically, we want to export these motifs to photoshop. In photoshop, you can select objects, move them around to different layers and do all that thing, and that's completely fine and it's completely okay workflow. If it works for you, but for me, it's usually quicker if I do as much as possible of the preparations in procreate. If you have enough layers, I would say that you need around 40 layers in your canvas to be able to do this the way that I will do it. What we are doing is that we are placing as many of the motifs as possible on separate layers because I want to group each flower with everything that is included in that flower. I want to have in one group. That way the workflow in photoshop later on will be so much quicker. But if you reach your layer limit, I suggest that when you reach your layer limit, you will start to draw the different colors on separate layers. It's important to separate the colors and layers at least. If you know from start that you only have around 20 layers or something, then you can draw all of the blue motifs on one layer, all of the green on one layer like that, and then create those as separate layers. In Photoshop, I will show you how to do that later on as well. But if you have around 40 layers here, then I would recommend to doing it like I'm doing it here. I hope that, that makes sense. What I will do next then is just to add a new layer because I want one of these flowers on each layers. What I want to do is to add a new layer, and then I will just draw a new flower over here like that and fill that in. If you have watched some of my other classes I usually place all of the motifs that are in the same color on one layer, but I think that the workflow, as I mentioned in Photoshop is so much slower. If you need to separate the different layers in photoshop later on to be able to move the motifs, so that is why I'm separating all of the flowers on separate layers now. I'm adding a new layer and drawing one more flower, and basically I'm just drawing them really quickly. You will get a really nice look with the square and texture and then adding a new layer and drawing a new flower. We're only drawing flowers in the circles that are inside of the canvas, which means that we won't draw any of the flowers in any circles that are cut off, and all of the circles have different numbers as well, so I only need to draw one of them, each. One, number,1, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. If I turn off the visibility of these layers, you can see that I have 1,2,3,4, so I only need this flower now. Number five, over here, so I added a new layer and I'm drawing the new flower on that layer. What I want to do now is to add some leaves and some circles and some lines on top of the flower. I will take my first flower over here, the number three and then I will just tap to add a new layer on top of that one, and I will choose this lighter blue color and add a circle over here on that one like that, and then I will add one of the next one, the number two so I will tap the layer three and add a new layer on top and just draw a one. And the next one. I will tap layer four and tap the plus to add a new layer and draw a little circle over there, and the next one is layer five. I will just tap the plus to add a new layer on top of this one, and the next one is this one over here, so I'll tap that and new layer on that one. If you think it's hard to keep track on these now, you can start to group them. I will select both of these and group them, and both of these and group them, group, group and group. And then we can just name the groups. I will turn off the visibility to see this one is number three, so I can just name it three and this one is two. So I'm just naming them the number that are beneath them. Zooming out a bit there. This one is number one, and this one is number four, and the last one is number five. Now we can start to add in these groups. Add the number three, if you want to have them in order, you can have that too. Really doesn't matter, but let's just do that so that we have our files organized a bit. I'm just tapping and dragging the groups so that I have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Starting from the bottom on the one, I will tap the top layer and add a new layer, and on this one, I want the yellow dots. I'm pretty sure that it was this one over here. Then I'm adding a yellow dot over there, and the next one is number two. I'm tapping the top layer and the group number two and tap plus to add a new layer and then I'm drawing a yellow circle. Number three is that one. I tap the top layer there, tap the plus to add a new layer and draw a yellow circle there. Number four is over here. Open up group number four, tap the top layer, tap plus to add a new layer and draw a little yellow circle on the circle. And the last one must be this one number five, so I tap the top layer, tap to add a new layer, and then I draw a little yellow circle. Now I have all of my flowers in different groups and this is why you need to have so many layers. That was what I was talking about earlier. If you reach your layer limit now, I would suggest to draw all of the yellow dots on one layer, all of the darker blue dots on one layer. Separate your colors with layers if you reach layer limit. If you don't reach layer limit, you can continue like me. Moving on. We don't need to close those. We can just continue. I'm going to the number one and I'm just drawing a black little dots. I'm tapping the yellow layer, tap the plus to add a new layer, and I'm choosing the darker black there, and maybe I want to go down and brush size two round 1%, and I'm just drawing a little dot there. So something like that. Then the next one, the Number 2, I tap yellow layer and then I tap to add a new layer on top. I'm just drawing black dots there. The next one is Number 3. So I tap the yellow layer, tap the plus to add a new layer. Then I add a black little dot there. The next one is Number 4, which is down here. So I tap the yellow layer, tap the plus to add a new layer and draw a black dot. The last one is Number 5. So I tap the yellow dot layer, tap to add a new layer and draw a little dot. So now we don't have that much to draw on the flower. We just need some lines and some leaves. So moving on, scrolling down again to Number 1, which is this one, I'm going to add some lines on the flower, and I want those under the dots. So I will tap the blue flower shape layers and tap the plus to add a new layer. And then I will choose the darker green color here. I have 1% in brush size, and I draw some lines here on the petals of the flower just to make the pattern a little bit more interesting and to add even more texture to it. The next one is Number 2. So I tap the bottom flower layer, tap the plus to add a new layer, and I draw some lines on that one like that. Then the next one is Number 3. So I tap the blue flower layer, tap the plus to add a new layer, and I draw some lines on that one. Moving on to Number 4 and tap to add a new layer on top of the flower. I know that Number 4 is over here. Then I draw some lines over there. The next one is Number 5. So I tap the blue flower in the group Number 5, tap to add a new layer on top and then I draw some blue lines on that flower as well. So now we have all of the floral parts and we just need to add some leaves. So moving on again to Number 2, I will actually need to add a layer beneath the blue flower layers. I will tap the plus to add a layer, and then I will tap the blue flower and just drag it above. I will tap my new layer that is below and tap the green color over here, the lighter of the two green, and make sure that I'm on the right flowers. So is this one, I want to draw a leaf here, so I'm just using the 1% again and drawing a leaf. I don't want it to move out of the edge here, so I'm just going to draw it like that and then I'm filling it in. Then moving on to the next flowers. So Number 2 tap the blue flower layer, tap to add a new layer on top and just drag it beneath. So I'm drawing the leaves on the lines here, and that is how this template is made. It's supposed to be something sticking out there in your motifs. And when you're drawing flowers, leaves are the most logical thing. Then moving on to the next one, the Number 3. So tap the blue flower in the Number 3 group tap to add a new layer and drag that layer beneath the blue flower. Just make sure that you don't jump out of the group here. So I can just tap the layer and I can just drag it inside of the group. I'm drawing some flowers here and the leaf over there. Then moving on to the next one the Number 4. So tap the blue flower layer, tap the plus to add a new layer, and just drag up the flower layer and tap the new layer. Then I'm just drawing some leaves over here. The last one, Number 5, tap the blue flower in that group. Tap the plus to add a new layer. Tap the blue flower layer and drag that above and then just tap the new layer, and I'll just draw a leaf over here. So now we have drawn all of these motifs. What we need to do now is just to add background layers. I will just tap to shut the groups down here like that. I will tap on the template layer, tap to add a new layer outside of all of the groups. I will choose this lighter cream white color and tap and drag to fill the layer with a color. Then I can rename this to background. There I have my background layer. 7. Make a Copy: Before we move on creating the full pattern in Procreate, I will show you later on in class how to create a pattern of these flowers in Photoshop. What we need to do is just to save a copy of this file. I will tap gallery, select the file, tap duplicate and then I can just tap both of those files and tap stack. Oops, I can just select both of those files and tap stack. Then I can tap into my stack and I can tap the filename and just write motifs, for example, and Here I can write pattern. Now we can create the pattern of this file and we already have the motifs ready to be exported in this file. 8. Organize Your File: The next thing that we will do now is to create a pattern in the pattern file. Tap into the pattern file. What we want to do now is actually to merge some layers, which might seem strange because we went through all of this process, divided the layers and colors into different layers and getting them into different groups and things like that, but now we will create a pattern in Procreate. This file we created to be able to have a good workflow if you want to draw your motifs in Procreate and create a pattern in Photoshop. But now, if we want to create the full pattern in Procreate and just finish the file in Photoshop, I will definitely merge all the layers with the same color. I would actually draw all of the blue motifs on one layer, all of the green one and things like that from the start. But as we didn't do that from the start now I will just merge them before we move on with this pattern, so I will just open up all of my groups. I will select all of the top layers that has these darker dots. I will select all of those and tap group and then I can just tap flatten over there, so then I have all of those on one layer. Then I can select all of the yellow dots, tap group and tap flatten, select all of the blue dots, tap group and flatten and all of the blue lines, select those layers. Tap the group, tap flatten all of the blue flowers, tap group and tap flatten, the green lines on the leaves, tap group and flatten and the leaves layers and group and flatten. Then I can just delete these extra groups over here because I don't need those. I have all of the different floral motifs on different layers. What I can do now instead is just to rename this, I will rename them to leaves, just rename the layers to whatever you want to rename them to so that you find them easily. Blue flowers, blue lines and blue dots, yellow dots, rename yellow dots, I'll call them black dots. Now I have all of the different layers named actually what they are, so that I easily can find them. I will just rename this group to flower or flowers, actually. Then I have all my flowers in that group, and I have the background layer here and the template layer there. 9. Make the Pattern: Now that we have cleaned up this file is time to create the actual pattern of this, and the first thing that I will do is just to select all of these layers and tap group. Now we have all of them in a group. Then I want to tap the Selection tool, tap "Save & Load" and Selection 4. Tap the "Transform" tool, flip vertical and flip horizontal. Then I can tap the "Layers" panel or the selection tool or the Transform tool again to de-select. Then I will tap the "Selection" tool again, Save & Load Selection 3, that transform tool, flip vertical and flip horizontal. I just tap the "Selection" tool again to de-select. Then I tap "Save & Load" Selection 2, the Transform tool, flip vertical and flip horizontal. Tap the "Selection" tool again. Selection 1 under Save & Load the transform tool, flip Vertical and flip horizontal. Now I can just turn my canvas around like this, so that I have my flowers in the direction that I drew them in. Now, I want to turn off the visibility of my background layer. Here we don't have any different colors or anything. That is what these numbers actually are from the beginning that you are supposed to draw all of the Number 2 in one color, all of the Number 1 in one color. That way you will get a really good balance in colors. But as we don't have any colors here, I will just continue to draw the flowers. I would just tap the blue flowers layer and I will drag out my color panel, tap the lighter blue color, and draw with a square and texture. Now I'll just continue to draw my flowers here. I think I will have 3% in brush size and just draw the flowers. Something like that. I can just draw in all of the blue flowers now on that layer. We just want to draw the ones that are inside and not the Number 5 here that are cut off. Then I just fill that in. I'm moving through this rather quickly now because the end purpose of this class is how to finalize this file in Photoshop. But I still wanted to show you how to draw this pattern because if you draw the same pattern as me, it's easier to follow along in class because then you will see the same result as me on your screen. That's for the best possible learning experience. That is why I suggest that you draw the same pattern as me here in class. Filling that one in, filling this one in. The blue flower over here. Then I go on to the blue dots layer, and I'll choose the lighter blue color. I draw the little blue dots there. The next layer, the yellow dots, choose the yellow color. Just draw some quick yellow dots and then black dots. Choose that color. I'm just drawing some dots there. Then I would choose the blue line's layer and the darker blue color. I will choose 1% in brush size and just draw these little lines on the flower. On all of the flowers, as you can see, I'm moving through everything quickly now. Just to get this pattern finished so that we can finalize it in Photoshop. Then moving on to the leaves. On the leaves layer and with the green color, I will draw some leaves on these lines here. Maybe not 1%, maybe we can do to take 2% there so that it goes a little bit quicker. Let's do 1% because it's easier to get a good line there. Over here we have a leaf. Like that and one over here. Something like that. Testing the brush size so that it goes quicker to fill it in. We have one over here. Now we need to go to this flower. What we do then is to tap the full group. Then I will tap the "Selection" tool, Save & Load Selection 4. Tap the "Transform" tool and just flip horizontal. Tap the "Selection" tool again, Selection 3, the transform tool and flip horizontal, Save & Load Selection 2 the transform tool and flip horizontal. Save & Load and Selection 1 the transform tool and flip horizontal. Then I will tap the "Transform" tool and tap "Flip Horizontal" again so that I get the right direction of the Number 5 there. Then I go into the blue flowers layer. Choose the lighter blue flower, and around 3% in brush size. I draw in this flower here. Then I tap the blue dots layer and draw in the dots. I don't know which direction I wanted. Yeah, that might be good. Little bit too big, maybe. Like that and then the yellow dot on the yellow dot layer and on the black dot layer, I joined the black dot. Then on the leaves layer, I choose 1% in brush size. Then I draw in this leaf over here. The other one on that flower over there. I have one leaf over here that was left. I'm just drawing in that one as well. Then I want to add the lines. I'm adding the leaf lines on the leaf lines layer. Here we have some leaf lines as well. I probably forgot those. Then the blue lines on the blue line's layer on this flower. Turning off the visibility of the template layer, and now we've created our pattern 10. Test the Pattern: It's time to try out this pattern. First, let's try it in my pattern tester. So tap your top layer, the group there. Swipe down with three fingers, tap "Copy All". Swipe down with three fingers and paste. Then I will tap the three little dots over there, split view, safari. Here I have my pattern tester, which is linked to in the description of this test. You'll also find it on my website, under resources and pattern tester. So tap your image. Here you'll flatten image, and drag it in your pattern tester. It will just swipe away, procreate. Here we have our pattern, which looks really good. I'm super happy with how this looks. So you can scroll here to see the scale of your pattern. Then I will hit back to "Procreate". Because if you don't want to use the pattern tester, you can check this pattern out in procreate as well. So if you want to try out this pattern in procreate, I would swipe to the right to duplicate this. So that you have four copies. Tap the transform tool, tap in the top left corner, type in 1,500 pixels. Tap your next layer, the transform tool, top right corner, 1,500 pixels. Tap your next layer, top, bottom right corner, and we're right in 1,500 pixels. Tap your next layer, that transform tool bottom left corner and write in 1,500 pixels. Then here you have your repeated pattern. You can swipe these together to merge them. So here you have a repeated pattern, and here you have your pattern tile 11. Export Files From Procreate: Now we have finished both our pattern and our motifs so I will tap "Gallery" and I have both of my files here. One is named motif and one is named pattern. Now we want to export these to Procreate. If I select the file with the motifs and tap "Share", I can tap "PSD" over here. Then I will just AirDrop these to my computer. The same with the next one, tap the X and then tap, select the pattern, Share and PSD. Then I will AirDrop that to my computer 12. Create the Pattern in Photoshop: In this lesson, we will create the actual pattern in Photoshop from the motifs file. Let's just open up this file in Photoshop and now we are going to duplicate these flowers. The very first thing that I would do is just to delete the first background layer over here. I'll just tap the band on that one and just drag the background beneath the template layer so that you can see that template layer. Now I will turn on the pattern preview. Tap "View" and "Pattern Preview" and "Okay", and this is how we create the pattern in Procreate. No matter if you're using a pattern template like this, or if you are using just a blank Canvas, you can repeat your motifs in the pattern preview and this is how it works. What I will do now is just to duplicate these different flowers that has the same number. Basically, this pattern layout is made so that all number ones will be in one color, all number two will be in one color. That way you will get a balanced pattern. But as we have all of the flowers in the same color here, let's just duplicate those flowers anyway and we can see how that looks when it's the same flower repeated at that position. Just a note here if you reached your layer limit in Procreate when we created these motifs and you have your flowers separated by colors instead of groups like this. If you have all of your blue motifs, the flowers on one layer, all of the yellow dots on one layer, and continuing like that, then check out the next lesson, which is lesson where I will show you how to separate the different motifs if you have them on the same layer. But in this lesson, do not confuse things, let's just keep going with the file that we exported from Photoshop. What I would do is just to duplicate the Number 1. I will tap the Number 1 group and right-click it and just tap "Duplicate group" and tap "Okay". Now I have a copy of that flower over there. Let's just try to place the flower in this position over here. I will tap command T to select it, and then I can place it over here. I can rotate it a bit if I want to, I might want to change the position of the leaves. Let's see if we want to do that. I will actually try to just leave that leaf outside of the edge here, so that is falling in here because that way it will be much easier to move it to this position. Let's just tap "Enter" there and I will show you what I mean. Now I want to move this leaf to this position and I wanted to move it outside of the edge here because then we can just cut it off here so basically everything that you see within this square is your motifs and the rest is just how the motifs and the pattern will look when it's repeated. What is falling out of the edge of this square aren't really there, is just for you to see how your motifs are repeated. Let me show you what I mean. If I open up this group and I go into the layer with the leaves, this one, and I tap the Lasso tool. I could not select that over here because there aren't anything over there. I will tap "Command D" to de-select. But I can select that leaf over here on that layer. So selected and then I tap "Command T" and then I want to move it like that. I will move it to this position, to the left here on our Canvas and I will place it within the box. That is the easiest way when you're using the Pattern Preview tool and then I will just tap "Enter". Then I want to fetch this little line here as well. I will select the line layer and then I will select that line and tap "Command T" and now I want to move that line, and rotate it and place it in the right position and tap "Enter" and tap "Command D" to de-select. Now I place that flower over there. We might need to change and rearrange some flowers here later on, but let's just continue for now. The next flower that we want to copy is maybe the Number 3. Let's select the Number 3 it's this one and I will right-click and duplicate group, tap "Okay" and then I can tap "Command T" and place my flower over here. So this one is a little bit bigger. It might work here, but I might need to rotate it a little bit and then in my work, I might also want to hold, shift and drag down the size of that flower a little bit. I might also want to drag down the size of that original number 3 to make it fit better. Actually what I will do here, because I want the leaves to go in this directions I will make sure to place my flower where I want it somewhere around there maybe. Let's place it within the frame and tap "Enter" and then I want to open up that group, select the leaf layer, the lasso tool and I want to select this leaf over here, tap "Command T" to select it. Then I want to move it to maybe over there and tap "Enter". Then I was like the other leaf on the same layer, tap "Command T" and then move it, rotate it and place it where I want it. I'm not sure exactly where I want it. Let's just place it over there, maybe and Enter. Then I will go to the lines layer and tap "Command D" to de-select, and select this line document T and just move it and then Command D. I select the other one, Command T and move it. As you can see, you have some texture here. If you can see that texture beneath your flower, you can delete it, but as I can see it here, I'm just placing it and enter, and Command D to deselect. There I have my number 3 flower. Then I want to copy the number 2 is this one. I will select the group, right-click, duplicate group, and then tap Okay. Then I can just select the whole group, tap Command T and just move it to somewhere over here. Not sure exactly where I want it. Maybe I want to twist it around like that, but then I might want to change where the leaves are. That looks good. Then I want to go into the leaves layer again and change the position of the leaves. I'm selecting that leaf tapping Command T and maybe placing it over here and tapping Enter, and then the other leaf, Command T. I'm selecting it with the lasso tool, and I'm placing it over there with Enter. Tap Command D to deselect. Here I can see that that didn't look so good. I will select that leaf again, Command T and just drag it a little bit like that and Command D. Now I want to select the lines. I select the lines layer, drag around one of the lines and move it to the leaf and tap Enter, Command D to deselect and I select the other line. Moved back to the background somehow. I will just select the lines layer again, drag around the line and tap Command T and place it with Enter and Command D to place it. The next thing that we want to do is to duplicate the number 5. Tap the five group, right-click, tap Duplicate Group and Okay, and then Command T, and let's move this number 5. That one is very small. Now we can see, maybe we don't want to use that one because it's too small. Let's make a change in this pattern. I will just delete that group and content with a bin. I will actually use this larger flower. It's the number 3, so I will duplicate the number 3 again, just because it fits better in that position. Duplicate that group and tap Command T to move it in the new position. I want to make sure that my leaves are above the line here so I can move the position of them. Then I tap Enter. I open up the group, tap the leaves layer, and now I want to move my leaves a little bit. I'm selecting this one with the lasso tool, tap Command T. Then I want to move it to maybe somewhere around there. Then I want to move the next one Command T to, no, maybe look good there. I'm not sure. Maybe I'll keep it like it was. Let's try that out. No, that looks really strange. I will move the first leaf again to this position, I think. Let's just move it to that position. I will also tap Command D to deselect and select that line again and just drag it down and tap Enter. Now I have that flower over there. I'm not sure how it looks. But now we can turn off the visibility of our template layer. Let's just scroll down the template and turn off the visibility and zoom out a bit and we can see that we have some changes that we might want to create. Let's just tap the little arrows on the group to make them smaller and we can see what we can do. I think that the first thing that I want to do is just to make the number 3's a little bit smaller. I will tap the three group and tap Command D to deselect and holding Shift, and just make that flower a little bit smaller because I think that it looks better here. Number 2, that we might need to move a little bit. I'm selecting the group number 2 and I'm zooming out while I do this, so I can see the flow of the pattern. What I can see now is that I might want to change the position of this one as well, that is number 2 copy. I'm just selecting that one and I might want to twist it around a bit. Not really sure. No, this looks good, but just changing the position a little bit there and zooming out. I think it's starting to look good. I might want to change the position of this one over here. That is the number 2 again. Maybe just dragging it out a little bit there, and then let's see what we can do with this one maybe. Which is it? Is it number 1? It's number 1. Tap Command T to select it and I'm just dragging it a little bit outside here, like that. That looks good and I'm really happy with this pattern. It looks a little bit different than when we created it in Procreate, but that's just the way it works when we create the pattern in Photoshop instead 13. Separate Motifs on Layers: In this little bonus lesson, I will show you how to separate your motifs into different layers if you ended up reaching your layer limit in Procreate. To make this example, I will open up the pattern photoshop file, so open that up with Photoshop. Here I will actually just duplicate this file, because I don't want to mess around with my original files. I will just make pattern copy and save it. Then I'm okay to use this file because I have a copy of it. There are a few different ways of doing this, I will do it this way. What I do is that I select the flowers group and I just duplicate that. You can tap and drag like I did there by holding the Option key or you can tap the group, right-click and tap, Duplicate group and tap okay. Then I will have a duplicate of that group. I need one for each flower, but let's just say that we have three flowers now. I will just duplicate this group three times. This is to show you how to separate the different layers. What I do then to make this easy is that I will open up the first group over here. I will select around a flower like this, with the Lasso tool, I have selected around that flower. Then I will go into each of these layers, select an inverse, you can type in Shift Command and I, or you can type in, select an inverse. Then I tap the back key to delete everything on that layer except what I have selected. Then I just go into each of these layers, and delete everything except that flower. If we turn off the visibility of the other groups, I have separated this flower in a group. Let's see us do that one more time. I will just turn off the visibility of that group and turn on the next group. Let's go ahead with this flower tap Command D, and I will select this flower over here with the Lasso tool and tap Select Inverse. I will go into the flowers here. The black dots, tap the back key, yellow dots, back key, blue dots back, blue lines back, blue flower back, leave lines, layer one, which is the lines on the leaves and the leaves. Now, we have separated everything that are supposed to be for that flower on one layer. This is the other way of creating these flowers in different groups. When you draw the motifs in Procreate. If you don't want to draw your motifs separated in different groups in Procreate. Mainly that will be if you reach your layer limit or if just feel that the workflow is not smooth for you. I hope that, that little technique helped you. In the next lesson, I will show you how to create your finished pattern fills. 14. Create Your Finished Pattern Files: In this lesson, I will show you how to create finished files of your file, where you have created the pattern in Photoshop, which is the one that we're calling Motifs and the one where you have created the Pattern in Procreate, I wanted to create the finished file in Photoshop. I will just open up the copy of that pattern file that we created in the last lesson. Now we have the Pattern file over here, and we have the Motifs file over here. They are created in Procreate in a different way with the layers here. Because here you have a group and you have the different colors on different layers. In the Pattern file and on the Motifs file you have a bunch of different groups. Let's start with the Motif file and see how to clean up this file to make it ready to be used. Let's turn off the Pattern preview. That's the first thing that we do. We tap View and Pattern Preview, and this is your pattern tile. The next step here is to separate the colors on different layers. We want each color on a different layer. What I do then is basically just to go into the groups again. We should have the same color on the same layer. On this layer, we have the dark little dots on the first layer in the Number 5 group. We should have that on the first layer here too. Then we tap the first day on the Number 5, and then we tap "Command" and select the first layer on the four. Then we do the same with the three copies. In all of these groups, we select the top layers, which is the layers with the black dots. We hold in "Command key" when we select all of these layers. Then I will right-click and choose "Merge Layers". That would have merged all of the black dots to one layer. Pretty simple. We can just rename this to black dots by double-clicking the layer name. Now we have all of the black dots on one layer. The next step is to choose the yellow dots. We choose the next in line, and in all of the groups, holding "Command". Let go of Command so you can scroll down, but hold it in when you choose all of the Layer 19, I think they're called. Here, it's called Layer 18, but all of the top layers and groups. Then we right-click, scroll down, tap "Merge Layers", and then we scroll up just to see that we have all of the yellow dots on one layer, and then we rename them to Yellow Dots. The next one is the blues, so I tap the next layer and hold in "Command" when I choose the top layer in all of the groups. Make sure that you choose all of those, and then right-click, scroll down and choose Merge Layers. We just want to double-check once we have merged them to make sure that all of the blue dots are on one layer. Moving on to the lines on top of the flowers. I'm selecting the next layers in line in the groups. Holding down "Command" when I select them. Then right-click, scroll down, Merge Layers. Scroll up. I see that I have all of the lines. I will just write Flower Lines, tap "Enter", and then I select all of the flower layers. Hold "Command" when you select all of the layers. Right-click, scroll down and tap "Merge Layers". Then just name them Blue Flowers and "Enter". Now we have all of the blue flowers there. Next in line are the lines on the leaves. Just hold in "Command" when you choose the layer. Right-click, tap "Merge Layers". Make sure you have all of the lines and we do. Then we write Leaves Lines and then select the leaves layers that are left here and this one, and then right-click, scroll down Merge Layers, and write Leaves. Make sure that you have all of the leaves, and we do. Now we can select all of these groups and just delete the groups. So right-click and delete groups. Yes. The template layer, we don't need anymore, so I will just delete that one with the bin and tap Delete. Now we have the background layers and we have all of the flora layers. We don't need to have those in a group so we can just select all of these by holding the "Shift" key and selecting all the layers, and I'm just dragging them above the group, and then I can just select the group and tap the bin to delete it. What we can do now is just to scroll in and see that we don't have any extra texture anywhere or something that we want to delete. If you would find something, I would search for that layer. I don't know if we have something here. Let's just say that we have a little bit of green here, then I would select, for example, the leaves layer with the green and the eraser tool, and choose a brush size, and I will just delete a little bit of that texture that might be left when you have moved your layers earlier in class. But I don't have any of that. This Pattern file is finished. Now, we have all of these different layers separated with the colors, and they're also named. That's really good. The last thing that you can do is just to create a pattern of this. Just tap, "Edit" and "Define Pattern". That is just mostly for your own purpose. You can choose the name and then tap "Okay", and here you have your pattern. Now you can actually try out this pattern by creating a new layer. Tap "Image". Now, tap "Layer", New Fill Layer Pattern and just tap, "Okay", and then you can choose your new pattern there. And if you scroll in the scale Window, you can check out your pattern by using it like this. This looks really good. We don't need the Pattern Fill in this file. I just wanted to show you how to create the pattern in Photoshop of that. You can just delete that with the bin. The next thing that we will do is to clean up. I would just save hitting "Command+S" to save this file, and then I will tap into my Pattern copy and clean up this file. Why do you do them? Is just to first delete these two inserted images here, so we'll tap "Delete" on those, and then I have everything in a group here, which I don't need. I can just select everything here and just drag it above the group, and then just delete that group. I have the background over here, and then I have another background over here. This is the background that we want, that's the right colors. I can delete that background and I can delete the template layer. I have the background. Here, I already have all of the parts of the flowers separated on different layers with different colors. You can choose if you want to have the background and the flowers in a group, or if you want to drag out these layers above the group. That is just a little detail, so it doesn't matter that much. Let's just drag it out and tap the bin on the flowers group. Here we have all of our different layers. That's everything you need to do with this file where we created the Pattern in Procreate. Other than that, this file is finished to be used, you can create the pattern of this as well. Tap, "Edit", Define Pattern, and tap "Okay", and there you have your pattern. You can try it out and see how it works by tapping the layer, new fill layer pattern, Okay, and just choose your new pattern. Oops, double-click here and you can scale your pattern and see how it looks. But to use this file, you can delete the pattern fill layer, so I'll just delete that, and here you have your finished pattern tile file. When you have created the Pattern in Procreate, the only reason that you wouldn't need this Photoshop file, if is someone is asking you for this specific file and then you just export it as a PSD. Make sure that your file is cleaned up and then it's finished to be printed. 15. Save and Export: The next step is just to save your files and export them as JPEGs so that you can share them in class. They will be saved exactly the same way, so I will just save one of them. Tap "File", "Save As", and then you can save it as a Photoshop file. Maybe you want to rename it to your pattern name. Maybe you have a number. It's a little bit different how we name our patterns, so I will just rename mine to Blue Flowers_Pattern_Tile like that and.psd and tap "Okay". To be able to share this file in class, I would tap "File", "Export" and "Export As", "JPG" and you don't need to have a super high-quality file. It's enough with four there. Just zoom in so that it goes to around 300 KB, it's okay. And then we tap "Export" and let's just save it on my desktop and Save. Then I can just move that file to my folder over there and let's open up that one. This is the file that you can share in the class and this is the file that you can, for example, share to clients. If you would want a JPEG file with high-quality to share on, for example, a print-on-demand site, I would tap, "Save a Copy", and here I would tap "JPEG". That's okay, filename, tap "Save" and make sure that I have large file over here, and tap "Okay". That way you have one file that is a really large file that you can use on print-on-demand sites or to print with other producers, clients, or whatever you work with. And then you have a smaller one that you can share in class, and you have your original PSD file that you can share to someone who wants a layered professional Photoshop pattern file. 16. Pros and cons: Before we finish this class, I just wanted to take one moment to explain to you why you would want to use one or the other techniques. Either you might want to draw the motifs in Procreate and create the pattern in Photoshop, or maybe you want to create the pattern in Procreate. This all depends on which workflow you enjoy the most. For me, I enjoy creating on my iPad the most. I'm not that fond anymore of creating on my computer. I enjoy creating my full patterns in Procreate, and if I would need a Photoshop file, I will just finish the file and clean it up in Photoshop. But if you enjoy using the Pattern preview in Photoshop and want to sit in front of your computer more in your workflow, then I would suggest to create the pattern in Photoshop and draw the motifs in Procreate. There might also be that for some patterns, you might want to use one technique or the other. That's completely up to you and your preferences. For me personally, I think that the less time I need to sit in front of my computer, the better, and the more time that I can spend drawing on my iPad, the better. I enjoy creating patterns in Procreate. This is the technique that I'm using, but I wanted to show you both of the techniques here in the class so that you could create professional Photoshop files no matter which of these techniques that you're using. 17.
