Make Collage Paper using a Flat Brush - 5 Ways

1. Welcome!: I love making collage paper. There is just something so satisfying in preparing them and then seeing them come together in unexpected ways in your final composition. But there's this myth that making collage paper requires a lot of fancy tools and serious artistic skills. Well, it's time to bust that. Hi, everyone. My name is Rathe and I'm a filmmaker and an artist, and in this many class, I'm going to show you five different ways of making collage papers using a simple flat brush and some acrylic paint. You can use these techniques to build your own collages, as backgrounds for different art projects, or even in your own art journal. Get your supplies and let's get creative. 2. Making Collage Papers with a Flat Brush: All right. In this video, we're going to be making collage paper using a flat brush, some acrylic paint, and any papers of your choice. For the first technique, we're going to load our pain brush with some paint, and then we're simply going to start stamping on our paper, and we want to keep stamping in all directions to create a nice variety on our paper. We want to keep stamping till our pain brush almost runs dry, and then we're going to pick up some more paint and start stamping again. This way, we'll have plenty of variety on our paper, where we have some sections with an almost dry brush and other sections are going to be with lumpy paint. As a variation to this technique, we can also use a different color or a darker color on top of the layers that we have already created, and this also creates an interesting collage paper. On this same sheet, I have created two different varieties using the same stamping technique. For our second technique, we're going to paint some wavy and curvy lines across our page, and these can be in any direction that you like. Don't overthink it and just let your paint brush go wherever it wants to go. Again, over here, we can create some interesting variety. Some sections with wet paint, whereas the other sections be a slightly brush. Once again, as a variation, we can layer one color on top of the other. Over here, I'm using a lighter color, which I have combined using my permanent rose and titanium bite. Once I have the base layer, then I'm going to come back in with the permanent ros. I'm just going to add this darker shade on top of the lighter sections. Again, this makes for a very interesting collage paper. I absolutely love how this turned out. Now, for our next technique, I'm using a thinner brush and I'm creating simple stripes. Again, you can play with the different viscosities of paint over here and also the amount of paint that you have on your paint brush. Some sections can be slightly, whereas the others can be with thick paint. As a variation to simple stripes, we can also create some kind of gradation or ombre look in them. For that, we blend two or more colors on the same stripe by going back and forth. This also makes for an interesting collage p. In fact, this is one of my most favorite papers because I love to cut out those stripes and use them in random places in my collage. Moving on to our next technique. We are again going to create simple lines. But this time, we're going to be picking up two or more colors with our paintbrush at the same time. In the earlier technique where we were creating stripes, we were actually picking one color after the other, and that was creating smooth blends. But over here, we're going to be picking up two or more colors simultaneously with the paint brush, and then they're just going to blend on their own on the paper, and they're going to create these interesting streaks and we'll have nice unexpected blends happening randomly on the paper. So again, this makes for a very interesting collage paper, but it can also be used as a background for your art journals or for other art projects, such as card making, envelope making, and so much more. Finally, we can also make an interesting collage paper with checks. To create a checkered pattern, we can use a single color or we can also use two or more colors and that will create interesting blends. You can also play with the distance between the lines so that you have some bigger checks and some smaller checks. All of these basically give you a lot of choices when you're finally building your collage because you never know which piece might just magically fit somewhere and might just come in handy. It's good to have a variety. Another way that we can create interesting checks is also by using brushes of two different sizes. So you can use one of your sheets in which you had created stripes with a thinner brush and then go back on it with a thicker brush and a different color. And that will also an interesting checkered pattern. If you want to add more color and more interest, then you can also take a different color or a third color and just come back in and add some dry brush details that also makes for an interesting texture. It is a checkered pattern, but it's just more dynamic and more interesting. Yeah, these are five different ways in which you can use your flat brush to create collage papers.
