1. Introduction to Learn InDesign in an hour: If you want to learn in design on, learn it fast, then this is the perfect course for you. I've been teaching in design, both in classrooms on online, for goodness knows, 15 years. At least. This course covers roughly 80% of what I would do in a standard two day cause, but does it in just one hour. So it's pretty fast, but it covers on offer a lot of stuff really quickly. It's a total of one hour, including this video. So you already like 1/60 the way through, so keep on going and you learn on awful lot very, very fast. 2. What is InDesign used for: If you were to walk around any bookstore or newsagent magazines like this, newspapers and books, novels, nonfiction, you can pretty much assume these will being created using in design. Let me just tell you essentially how it works. In a nutshell. You have a document like this. The document has lots of pages on on each page. You have a certain number of frames framed contain either images or text, and that's pretty much it. Some latter is fairly standard, fairly simple. Other lower is way more complicated, and it inevitably might use other programs, like Illustrator and Photoshopped, as we'll see. But nevertheless, that's what In design, Dar's traditionally in designers credit print documents. It can create digital documents to, as we will see. 3. The indesign interface and workspaces: when you open up in design for the first time, I open up a document. Your screen should look like this. Four areas of the program. The 1st 1 is the era. You'll do your work. The second is this vertical tools panel, which contains the tools that you'll do your work with. Thirdly, you got these menus file edit layout and someone finally, other panels like properties, pages, CC libraries. But I should say these pounds are governed by this thing here, which is your choice of workspace by the foot. You'll be using essentials, but for this course I'm going to use essentials. Classic because I believe it's far better for beginners. That's that's what we're gonna be so choose. Essentials Classic on your Screen will look like this. It gives you this additional panel. Call the control panel, which gives you loads in useful stuff. So those are the main areas of in design 4. How InDesign templates work: If you're quite new to in design, the chances are you might have inherited some in design templates along with in design. You know they were. Template is it makes it really straightforward to put something together without you having to create it from scratch. So here's an example. Here's the finished advert for this imaginary tour company. That's what it will look like. Here's what it looks like in in design. So the bare bones of their let's look at what we got. This is obviously the size and shape of the document pink margins or just to help you line things up. We don't need to worry about those yet. The thing I want you to focus on is this. Here, This is an empty frame, so you know about frames already. This is an empty one, and I can see it's empty because the large X inside, that's where the image he's gonna go. The photographic image. The logo is already there, so all that remains is to put the text in. So that's the hell of it. So in the next video, we'll look at how we get the image in, and then we're looking editing the text 5. How to import an image into indesign: the way you bring an image into in design is generally to use this selection tool. You select a frame you wanted to go in noticed. I can see the frame is selected because of these white squares around the edge that's not selected, that is, and then you simply go to file she's place when you locate your image and raided. Next time, bring in this giant peg and then it comes. That's how you place in an image in in design. 6. How to edit text in InDesign: if your eagle eyed you might have noticed there are two distinct type frames in this document. So we're gonna change the text in both of them. Do that by using the type tool, which is this one. And you click once somewhere on the text notice you get a flashing cursor to say, knows you're editing the text and then you can click and drag. It behaves like any text you've ever edited on a computer before. So, for example, I can highlight it on over type with the word Japan, for example. And then I can click down this one. Come then again highlights it, however time, so that simple text editing in design 7. About Bitmap and Vector graphics: there are technically two different types of images you're gonna bring into in design. This is the 1st 1 clearly, that is a photograph. But just to get technical for a second, I've open this in photo shop. You can see the original. If I zoom in further, I get in, the more you can see this is actually just made of squares. Squares of different colors is what happens when you take a photo with a digital camera of any sort. Technical term for an image like this is a so called bit mapped image. So if someone sends you a J peg or a ping or a gift for tiff repair Steve, there's a little bit map file formats, then made off pixels. Small squares of color, I think said that this image here is quite different. It's not made off pixels. A tall you might notice what I got here. These kind of strange little dots and bars and things. This is called a vector graphic. This doesn't use pixels, so notice the difference. When I zoom right in, I'm going as far as I like, and there's no blurring or anything. There's no loss in quality it's still absolutely crisp and clear. Also, unlike the other image, which had thousands of 1000 colors, this literally has to. So if you're looking at logo or an infographic or an icon, it's likely to be a vector graphic. This is created in Illustrator, I should say Adobe Illustrator. I should also say Adobe Photoshopped in Adobe in designs or part of the same stable. So somebody send you an AI file or a GPS file. These are vector graphic 54 months as a poster bit map formats, which have probably gone through both of which you can bring into a design. 8. What a link is and why it is important: When you import an image, you get this little link symbol, which tells you the immediate licked. Now this is important. What this means is, when you brought the image in, it doesn't bring in the whole quality of the image. It just brings enough in. For years, they had a sit working on the screen, but it knows where the original one is. So if you do something like center the print or create a pdf, it refers to a lap file, and it can get a what kind of high resolution stuff it needs for it to be. OK, so that's fine, so long as the link stays intact. So let me show you what happens if you were to change the folder that the link was from Will rename. The link will do that really quickly, so everything comes from this folder they fought. Just rename it. Want to go back into in design? You'll see the links have disappeared, replaced with a red question marks, and you'll notice certain in this image, the quality looks a lot lower, and that's what it's likely to look like when it prints. So that's a long way of saying once you brought an image in, don't move it or rename it 9. Why do my images look terrible in InDesign?: looking at my screen, you can see the links were intact and that the quality of the image looks great. But if you were to open the same file, it might not look quite so good. I'll show you why there's a new control setting. Cool the U display performance. I notice my machine is on high quality display. Where is by default, you will use typical display noticing typical display. The quality doesn't look quite so good, but it does make the machine faster. So if you got a machine that can cope with it and you're not, bring in loads and loads of images, it's quite possible for you to use high quality display. 10. About Normal Preview and Presentation modes: There are three so called screen modes and in design, this is the default. One is called normal, and you get to see all the extra stuff, the margins and extra useful information. But notice we also have previ that hides the extra stuff. But you can still work no ideal for beginners that better to probably see what you doing. But in the 3rd 1 his presentation presentation is useful for presentations. Use what you can use the up and down arrows to move between pages if you got multiple pages . But good thing about this is that you're seeing in full quality. You press escape by the way to get out. So what I do if I need to work in typical quality display in normal mode, is that a work that way? And then what? I want to see what it really looks like in full quality. I'll give you screen, mode and presentation, see it in full quality and then press escape to get back out again. 11. How to change the colour of a frame in InDesign: next, we're gonna look at changing colors of things and in design. But I need to introduce you to two words. The first is Phil. That's the color of the middle of an object. And stroke is the color of the line around the edge. Change the car like you select your object. You open the swatches panel. I want to change the fill. So I need to make sure that this Phil is in the front. As you can see, it is with the stroke was in front. It would be like that. Look at the struggle later. So with a fill in front, you simply choose a different Swatch like that. 12. How to change the colour of text and a logo in InDesign: sticking with the theme of changing color. Changing text is pretty straightforward. You simply select the text with the type tool here is into separate frames, so I can do independently and you apply Swatch again, making sure that the Phil is selected rather than the stroke. But in terms of the tax down here, it might look like text. But this little link symbol tells us, Actually, it's Ah, logo. It's an image. So that comes from Illustrator. So that means you've either got a editor and illustrator or assuming that there's a logo in the same color, you would just swap that out. So that's what we'll do now Select the image here, go to the links panel. Not just this link is selected. Go to this drop down menu, choose re link, and then you just got out. Find whether logo is 13. How to automatically scale an image in InDesign: Sometimes you'll placing image into in design, expecting to see a picture of, ah, house or a tree or whatever, and you'll end up seeing something like this just kind of pixels. Let me show you what's going on. If I select the frame and choose object fitting and then fits content proportionately, it re scales the image so you can see the whole thing. So that's great problem is that because this image is a different shape to the frame that contains it when it scales it down, it leaves white space in this case, top and bottom. Sometimes that happened left and right. So a better command is this one object fitting and fill frame proportionally that still frames a proportionately, and you might have some extra, which we'll talk about in the next video. But that's the best command there is before making an image fit 14. How to manually scale and crop an image in InDesign: as you know when you click on any frame the edge of the framers showed in blue. But what happens if you click on this little circle, which you get on an image frame? It reveals brown frame, which shows you the contents in other words, the full extent of that image. Furthermore, if you click on hold down the mouse, keep it down but extra around the edges revealed. So as you drag, you can see the bits that have been cropped off so you can move them back. What you can also do this will be may be useful in this image. If I want to kind of make the image a bit larger inside the frame, you do the same thing. Click on the circle, pick one of these handles, hold down and then press shift and then drag slowly. I notice you can scale image. So is what is the automatic way of scaling an image. You can do it manually by clicking in the center and then shift dragging one of the handles 15. How to place multiple images at once into InDesign: if you ever need to bring in lots of images at once in design, has got a great trick up its sleeve instead of the way we work so far whereby we selected a frame first. If you deliberately don't do that, so click maybe off the edge of the page and then use the normal come on file in place on, then find your images. In this case, I've got some ready clicking drug or click and then shift click to select them all. Press the open gotten and you might see there a touch to your cursor, and then you simply click to bring them and 16. How to import text into InDesign: When you want to bring text into in design, you don't need to type it necessarily. You can place it in the same way you can place an image. So I've got my type. It'll here. I've clicked inside this text rain and now I'm gonna use file in place, Same command. Find my way to the text folder. I'm gonna bring in this bit of text. This happens to be a plain text file. It's also possible to bring inward formatting. If you're going to do that, I'd encourage you to click show import options. That gives you some options as to what to do with the other formatting. That's not the case here. So bring it in and then it comes. 17. How to change to another font in InDesign: the eagle eyed amongst. You might have noticed that the text we brought in here is a different fund. So the text that follows it so if you're trying to follow a particular corporate guideline , then if you know the front you're looking for. So in this case, notice up here it says, Myriad pro. That's what I'm looking for. But when I select this text here, it says 1,000,000 pro. That is the default font that in design music. So I'm looking for myriad pro. So one way to do that is toe klik inside here and start typing it. So, m, why are I I on notice? There's a load of myriad pro, so I want myriad pro regular on their way. All that no matches. And while we're there, got different options for whites and things, and then the type size is there, too. 18. Some basic graphic design theory: we're gonna go into presentation mode, so view screen my presentation just briefly, like a couple of design features. You may or may not like the design of this, but I want to show you things that I think make it hold together. So, firstly, repetition. So the repeating size and shape of those frames, the repetition, let's say, of the white color that comes from the church building on the white, in the logo repetition of the same front. The repetition is quite key. Makes things feel like they belong together. Alignment. You'll know how things are aligned, that a key thing that is important, particularly when things are a long way away. So the heading, you can see lines up with the side of here, so that again makes it feel like it belongs together. And then contrast. We need contrast to make things more interesting. So we got the different weight to the front, so heavy and not heavy. And then we've also got the distinct white against the blue. That's again contrast, and then a more subtle one is what's known as proximity. So you know, as a viewer, if you're walking past this poster and you like the idea of going on this holiday? You know, all the details are there on the bottom. You can see that because there's white space surrounding this and, you know, this is a distinct element on its own. So we call this proximity, So think about how to use proximity. So, in other words, put space around things that you want to be seen as distinct from other things. 19. How to create a new document from scratch in InDesign: we're gonna take a look at how you create a new document and in design. But this is where we're going. So you know a bit about this document just to give you even more of an understanding here. If I just select all of this leaving out the way, notice this pink kind of rectangle. This is the so called large and guide, and we're using that basically tow line, all the elements. So that's one thing we need to set up from scratch. Basically, we do file, need document, then you cheat. If it's gonna be print or wearable one of what we're going for print and then you might need to look at the presets. Causes a five this in a five flyer, various settings. We're gonna turn off facing pages because that's what you have. If you got, like, a magazine or a newspaper with a spine down the middle, the anything we're gonna worry about is the margins. And I'm gonna reduce those 25 millimeters. If you want to see what that looks like, you can click preview and you might see there That gives us what you I want to remember. We're going for. So when you press create, that's your new document. That's the right size and it's got the right margins, and that enables us to start from a good place. 20. How to create frames in InDesign: so far. In in design, we used totals the selection tool on the type two. But the third Kato is what I call the frame tool. But technically, it's called the rectangle frame toe because he used this took Craig Frames. So I'm gonna line this up with the top left margin. Notice the time. Little arrow there. Tell us it's lined up. Sure, I get away down to the bottom right again. You should see Little Arrow to tell you it lined up. And then when you let go, there's your friend. So then, once you've used that, you want to change back to the selection tool. You know how to bring an image in so quickly? Do that. And as far as the text is concerned again, I would use the same tools. Notice the X says you got an empty frame. So to put text into it, you click on it, but the type tool just very quickly to former that text, select it. Choose the font up here, which I know is Populus standard of it in terms of size. I don't really know what the sizes. So try some of these presets sizes. You realize pretty quickly. That in the largest side isn't large enough. It's about half the size that tells me and the spear roughly 1 41 50 So I type that in and then just keep pressing the up arrow. If you run out of room here that you just get back and then from there on, it's just changing Makallah and repeating. 21. How to import and scale a logo in InDesign: This document is a double sided postcard, and it's creating a pretty similar way to the last thing we created. It's a five, but its landscape rather than portrait. It's got margins around the edge, which I used to snap this frame to so so me the last time. The differences. If you look in the pages panel, there's two pages, one above the other, so it's sticking with the first page. For now, what I wanted to do is bring a logo in. Now the problem with logos is, if you create a frame before you put them in, the chances of you getting framed the same size of the logo is almost nil, so it becomes awkward. So the best way to bring in a logo is to have nothing selected, then do file in place. Choose your logo. Then it touches to your cursor, and then you simply click and drag, and it constrains. The shape of the frame to the shape was a logo. If, however, once you brought it in, you think? Actually, I want that to be larger or smaller, trick to scale both the frame on the content of the same time. It's different from what you saw earlier. You have to hold down on the Mac. This would be command and shift on a PC. It would be control and shift, and then you click and pause or one of the handles, and then you drag slowly and you'll see what you're doing whilst you're scaling. So that's how you import a logo and scale it the best way you can in in design. 22. How to apply a border around a frame: for the next couple of videos. We're gonna look at the second page of this, so double click on the page two time now, So we're gonna learn how to align things in various ways. The first thing we look at is this thing Here. This is a stroke around the frame. Gonna delete that object, you know, to create frame, so same tool, the rectangle for until line up to the corner can drag. Now you credit friends with four. Andi, it's not really been apparent that this color that you can see here could also see here means none. So basically, that means if we were to look at this in presentation mode, you're not going to understand That hasn't mattered so far. But it does now because clearly this needs to be seen. So that way we make it seen is by selecting it and we go to swatches and we bring a stroke to the front, which, actually you can also do down here and you choose a color. So this is gonna be black, and then the stroke weight is listed here. I'm adjusting that to make it to point to make it match the rest of these here, so that's stroke that can apply around any object. But of course, that means that he sent it to print that will be visible. 23. How to align an object to the center of a page: The second thing we're gonna look out on this page is how to create this line. Get it straight, get it line up to the top after the bottom, onto the center of the page. So let me delete the original to draw a line. You use this tool the line to I'm gonna deliberately draw it, Not right in the middle. Gonna draw it here and line up to the top. Notice the white arrow zooming online case that wasn't clear earlier. Click and drag line up somewhere on the bottom. You might want to get it straight, but I'm gonna deliberately make it not straight. So you can see the way you make it straight, is he? Hold down the shift key. Keep back down as you let go The mouse. So now I've got a line that lines up with the top. It lines up in the bottom and then, in terms of the struggle, just make this the same way to the others. And then with the selection tool, notice that when I start to drag it to the right immediately, we get a pink colored. Or maybe I should use the property. Magenta, magenta colored line going halfway down the page. This is saying that vertically, this is a line to the middle of page was if I move it up, what does a pants put it back down, kicks in again. So I'm looking for the same thing that I'm gonna see in the middle of the page horizontally . So let me just get back to roughly the right area. There we go. That is right. Intimate of the page, horizontally and vertically. So that is the magenta colored smart guide. It lines things up in the center of the page. 24. How to align and repeat objects in InDesign: We just looked at the magenta colored smart guides that line things up to the center of a page. We're about to look at other smart guides to create this kind perfect here. The's multiple lines are gonna select all of these and delete them. So if you start for one line drawn pretty much the same way as last time and then to Jupiter, anything you selected with selection tool, hold the bolt or option key down and just drag it toe wherever you think you want another one. Now what happens if I try and repeat that so called the same key down option or old and look for the green arrow that appears now? So there's three things that line on the left tells me it's lined up on the left hand side . The line in the middle tells me it's lined up in the center, but more significantly, the pair of arrows on the right tells me that the gap between this line about toe create is the same gap between here and here. Between here and here, I could do the same thing again. Select all toe option drag. Now I can cry additional copies like that. So those of the green smart guides they tell you the objects are aligned toe other objects in particular ways. 25. Intermission: well, them for making it this far. You're about halfway through. My advice here is just pause for a second. Go back and look at the things that have been of interest and try some of them out yourself is over well, charging three features, but try practicing the ones you think so far that you're really going to use. So stop watching this orbit. Get most thing on the belt, go back and watch videos again if you need to keep going. 26. How to create a social media image in InDesign: you might remember that, right? The beginning of the course. We talked about the context in which you use in design. So historically, it was used by professional designers essentially to create stuff print, whereas now it's used much more widely, and it's also used for things like social media. So I'm going to this website, which you can pull the video and proper, that new or well if you want to. It's a sprout social block post on the most useful bit here is the link to their Google dog , which I will open up. So this gives us the sizes of frequently used social media platforms. So, for example, instagram, twitter and so on. So you click on the one that you want to create four, and it gives you the size in pixels, so maximum minimum dimensions on the recommended dimensions. So if I want to create, let's say, an in string photo for Twitter, I just need to note these numbers and then create my new document for that and in design. So I'm gonna create a new document in In Design, which is 506 pixels wide by 253 pixels. Talk So when it back into in design to a new document, I'm doing command then as the shortcut controlling on the PC this time, rather than using the print option on use Web on the size, I'll type in 56 by 25 three Now, in terms of margins, not quite sure what I'll need yet. I'm gonna just guess 12 pixels and then press create. 27. How to export a png from InDesign: so into that brand new document, I put these different elements no much here. You don't know. One new thing is that this frame goes all the way out to the edge outside the margins, whereas these other two framed the text on the logo frame line up in the margins. The only new thing here is the text that lines up in the center of the frame. That's done by using this from here. So now I can export it into a format that can be put onto a website run to social media. That's pretty simple. It's just file export. I'll choose my folder. I'll choose a PNG. That's the file. Four more years, give it a name and then save. It's a few options here, but if you go for a resolution of 72 then the number of pickles you get are exactly the same number as you talked in the beginning. So I'll export that. I'll flip into the finder and show you the result. So I got this image selected. I'm using Get in for one of Mac. I got there by right clicking on. You can see that the mentions are exactly what we typed in in the beginning, and there's the previous 28. How to style longer text quickly and consistently with InDesign: When you first start working on documents in in design that have a lot more text, it can become a lot more challenging. Let me show you how this document is going to look. So what I hope you can see here is there as a consistency there. The repetition. So, for example, day one day, two day, three day four, etcetera. Those paragraphs are exactly the same, same with the ones that followed. So there's a consistency there that if you can get this right text becomes a lot easier. So just introduces the two things you need to know. Trust me that you need to know where the paragraphs and in design begin and end. We're gonna zoom in by doing command or control. Plus, there's no absolute indication where those paragraphs end, so to find that you need to go type so hidden characters, and you can see this little blue character called a Pill crow have toes. At the end of the paragraph, you might wonder why that's significant. This is the second really significant thing. Window styles and paragraph styles. Once you define a paragraph style, you could just click in your paragraph that applies This is how to get the consistency there is required. Just do two of those on your see it come together. This is how we control text in in design we used paragraphs, we use paragraph styles. So in the next video you'll learn how to create the paragraph stop. 29. How to create paragraph styles in InDesign: When you start a brand new document, you only get one paragraph style for free if you like. And that's called basic paragraph of the introduction. One here is one that I've left the other ones I've deleted. So to show you how to create a style, those four steps, firstly, you select a paragraph, including the pill crime. Secondly, you apply what known as character formats. And that's what this button is for here in this corner se character for letting maybe Okay , maybe on the next one. And then I'm gonna change the front in this case to Mary at pro old And then the size and I changed 20 point leading, which is the space between paragraphs. I'm gonna change to 23. So that's the second step. The third step is the paragraph for laughing. So this again is a button. The only paragraph formatting I'm gonna apply is this thing called space before. But I'm gonna change that of five. And if I zoom out my hope that you can see what that's gonna dio. So now we haven't talked about paragraph formatting for these are things that can apply to a paragraph said the space before it, whether it hyphenate that kind of thing. So that's the 1st 3 steps we've selected. A paragraph applied character formatting paragraph formatting finally just need to turn into a style. So with its still selected, you go to the paragraph styles panel, the drop down menu you choose new paragraph style. Give it a nine. You're gonna cool this days, find you press okay, and there's your style just so you can see that works, click in another paragraph on a ploy days. So that really is quite key part of in design being up to crate paragraph styles so you could quickly apply formatting to your text. That's consistent. 30. How does text flow from one column or page to another in InDesign?: I've just come back a few steps so you can see a bit more about how the text comes in. So I'm going to use a shortcut, command or control de for place. We'll bring in the text, and I want you to notice that it comes in and it automatically goes from the bottom of that first column to hear what the musky moves around this area. And it automatically goes to the second page and again jumps from one column to another. So I want to explain how that works. I'm gonna change to my selection tool. Are you gonna notice something very, very significant here, which is this slightly larger square? This is called the import and it tells us where the sect is coming from. When it's empty, it means there's nothing before it. So that's the start of the text. Okay, this is a two column document. Would you show you that? Notice the two columns. That's why the water must could go to the cross that's controlled by object text frame options that would go with the one Well, I could make it to three or one of us, then notice we have the out port here. This tells us where the text goes to and you'll notice it has got a little arrow in it. Which means that obviously continues somewhere else on that somewhere else is gonna be on the next page. So when we look on the import here, you can see Of course, there's a narrow saying This text doesn't start that sort this in the beginning of the tax , it starts from somewhere else. And finally the out port down here. You might see his empty, so that tells us for sure that the text doesn't go in or else it finishes there. So that kind of linkage of text between two different frames is known as a story, the key word in design that that's worth you watching out for. So that's the That's the whole story of text. Another way of telling you at the end of a story. When you see that character there, that's the end of the story. There's no more text after it 31. How to create multi column and multi page text flow: I've just got back an additional step to show you how you would set this up from scratch. Different ways of doing it. But this is a good approach. Set the margin toe where you want the text to be. Use a regular frame, put it across the whole area, click inside with type two and import the text. And then tonight that two columns ccn already object. Tex Schramm Options Change it to notice the import. Not just the output, though, is gonna read class, meaning there isn't enough room. So what you can do is click on there and then drag from here aware. Cross that again. Object, texture and options to call. That's how you can bring texting from scratch. 32. How to make text run around images: every magazine and newspaper in the world uses a similar set up to what we got. Here you go on area that the text comes into, you got the text, you got the paragraph styles that define it. But you've also got this. What happens if I move this away? Text pings back is a clever system that enables you to make text longer or shorter so that it fits perfectly. Notice how this fits perfectly, so this is a key ingredient. It's called text rap like paragraph style that's in the window menu. It's a window textural. That's where these panels live on. I'm gonna change it back to the default text rap, and you might notice that the text just kind of goes underneath it. That's what happens when you bring in a frame. If you use this second auction wraparound bounding box, the text automatically gets pushed away, and that means that you can make this smaller or larger. We'll move it to a different place really quickly and flex it. Me So that's window text rap wraparound bounding box. I've also got a little extra space underneath that read better 33. What are Tracking Leading and Kerning?: in this video, we're gonna three typographic terms that you might have heard tracking, turning on, letting his text of the top here. This is using default trucking notice. The value in this section is zero, whereas the same check the same size that's minus 45. But this text is plus 340. So that's tracking now when you go tracking. But like for a single pair of letters like here, I might think, I just want that oh, to move a little bit further away from the L. That's Kernan. So it's not the kind of thing you would generally mess with unless you're doing a really large headline but like this and finally letting this is that the foot leading value notice again? It's in brackets, so that's 20% larger in the front sight. This is the gap vertically between the lines. Where is this is 12 on 12 as a designer would call it, that means a lot closer. This one you can see I've increased the leading up to 18 now. What that does mean is it's much easier to reach from a distance. So you might be looking at thinking, Yeah, that's great. But imagine reading a novel that was like that. That would be pretty hard work. So generally speaking for so long form copy. As you might say, that is the default. That's great. But sometimes to get text notice from a distance, you would use a slightly larger letting money. 34. How to use tracking to make text fit: here. I've got on almost identical version of the document we've been working on. You might notice the text doesn't quite fit. I'm gonna click home the out port with the selection tool, then click once here, it shows me this text doesn't quite fit. So, as you know, already, one way to fix it would be to make this Smolen. But another way used by editorial people is to use tracking. So we've seen her. Tracking is used in a design context to make text kind of stand out here. We're trying to use it in a very, very subtle way. So very briefly, I would select this paragraph. Short cut is 1234 clicks to select it. And then it finally reduced that tracking a little bit. So let's say minus 10 doesn't quite work. I've done this before, so I know the amount that I need. So it's gonna be minus 15 notice that pulls that back. Bring that lineup on almost fixing the problem. The trick is not to take it too far, because if you take it too far, it just looks very, very obvious that you amended the tech. So try and avoid that. So just to finish off notices another problem here. So four clicks to select that paragraph. But again, I've done this before, so I know that needs to be Myers 16. So just in the tracking shouldn't be your first port of call, but it can work when you gotta get text, if it and there's no obvious way of doing it. 35. How to tell if your text is inconsistent and how to fix it: you know, ready How useful paragraph styles are applying formatting quickly and consistently, but there's a little bonus here. This is the text that we've amended and notice you can get the paragraph styles to show you when you've moved away from the style. So this bomb here it's called a style override highlighter. So the manual tracking that I've applied, if I turn it on it tells me that we've moved away from the style. But I can't stress how useful this is, particularly in a longer document where your thinking is the text consistent. So if you are using paragraph style and you want to check, have you adjusted the text? Since you've applied them, turn this little button on and it will tell you, and then should you want to get the text back to the style, you can click in it. Hold down the auto auction key and click on the name of the style and it goes back. Not that that's helpful in this context, but in another context. It might be just what you 36. How to tidy up your panels in InDesign: in previous videos, You see me pull out the text wrap panel on the paragraph styles panel on. They just sort of stayed put here on my desktop. That can become a problem if you start to cover up your work. So what you might want to do is stall them in the side here. The way you do that is you simply click on the name like that drag, and you're looking for a blue line like that on the Me so I could do that and it snaps close this one down that comes with paragraph styles and then that gets remembered by this workspace. Notice we're in the essentials. Classic workspace. You might remember that from the beginning of the course, so fight changed to a different workspace. It's a advanced, and then I come back to my essentials. Classic workspace. It's remembered it, so that's really useful unless you don't want that to happen, in which case you could do Reset Essentials Classic, and it would remove the ones that you added. It's also possible to create your own workspace, which you might want to try at some point 37. How to create your own custom colour in InDesign: you will have realized already that you get a fairly limited set of colors in in design or I should say swatches. So what happens when you want to create your own? So if you're following your own brand guidelines, the likelihood is you've got some color defined either in C n y que value or RGB values. Or maybe some others. We're going to look at how you create a C M y que color. Go to the swatches panel, drop down menu, choose new color swatch, then Cala mode should be seeing like a If it's one of these other ones, you scroll up to the top. You'll see you can choose RGB etcetera on. Then you just choose colors. So the value have been given is 50 Sion 20% magenta, no yellow on 20% black type in nice values. Press OK, and there's your new color swatch. Now something that's happened at the same time is it added it to a C C library. Well, look at that. In the next video 38. How to use colours and styles in multiple InDesign documents: We've just seen how, when we created our own swatch, it automatically put it in a C C library. Let me explain why that's significant. I created this other far from the same template. Now the template contains the brown color, which is why that's there. But otherwise I'd only get the default colors. So we're trying to create new Cut a new document. You're only going to get these colors. So what if I want that blue color, even though it's in that documents, that doesn't mean it's gonna be anywhere else because I created a C C library or a credit it for me, the C C library colors you can use in any document, so notice whilst the color isn't here, I can use it from here. So if you had anything to a Soucy library, whether it's a swatch or indeed a paragraph style, you can use that in a way, your documents, and just to show you again, how that happened when I created my color Swatch, I left the after Sisi Library checked. If you do that at its your library force, you got other libraries. You can choose whichever one you want. Finally, you can rename your library by clicking on it Drop down menu. You could relate 39. What is the A Master Page in InDesign?: I'm back again, and my postcard document is two page document to look at this thing here, a master page. You might notice that both page one and page to have a little eye on them, which means that they are based on the A master. You might wonder what that is, but when you create a new document, whatever the settings you could in there, they kind of live on the A master page. Let's double click on here and have a look, but I just that the only thing on the A master page here is the margins that we call because that's on the a master page. Because both page one place to use that. That's why the margin is consistent. So that's a simple example of how master pages used in the next leader. We look at a more complex example 40. How to make automatic frames from the master page: We're looking here at the A master page in a slightly different version of the tour sheet we made earlier, so notice it's possible to put something literally on the master page. So because it's on the master page on both page one and page two based on it, it appears on both pages. But notice that you can't select it. So if I want to change the date, say I'd go back to the master page, edit the text there, and then it would appear the same on all pages. Which, as you could imagine for a really long document, is really, really useful. There's a second feature here. I'll show you. There is on empty text. Remy. This is called a primary text frame. This automatically links from column to column and page to page. So what? What happens when I go back to Page one? Do file in place? Bring in the text that you not familiar with when I click on here. I noticed that it automatically goes from column to column on page to page so this primary text rain could be really useful if you've got long documents that haven't got much variety like novels, for example, 41. How to edit a paragraph style in InDesign: are not. The benefit of using paragraph style is that if you want to change it, you can do that easily. You simply right click on the name of the style she's at it, but then you get a gigantic load of options here. So, for example, on the basic character formats, I could change the font from semi bold to symbol metallic, and you'll notice it effects this page here. But also, if I okay that when we go to another page, you'll see effects again every page in the document. So that's editing a paragraph style. 42. What are Facing Pages in InDesign?: I'm in presentation mode, pressing the down arrow going through this document that's just different from any other document we've looked at and that this is a so called facing pages document. Notice a line here. This represents the spine. So if you think about every book you've ever opened, if you live in the West, the spine will be on the left. So therefore the first page on the right, But then you have a double page spread so called going all the way through the document until you get to the end. When you got a final page effectively on the left. So if you check facing pages when you create a new document, that is what you're gonna get. 43. How to add an automatic page number in InDesign: you might have noticed the page numbers as we were working through the way that happens automatically is on the master page. It's a special character here, which you notice, says a at the moment, because we're on the A master page just to show you how that is put in, I delete it. It's time. Insert special character markers and current patient that gives you the page number on any post that you used. The A master page, I say any page that you use the A master page. This is getting more complex, but something to look maybe a bit more into if you want to. It's also possible to create another master page, A B, which in this case has no numbers. So that's why the front page on the back page don't have the number on it. That's more advanced. But you may choose to get into that if you need to 44. How to check spelling in InDesign: in the last section of this course, we're gonna look at a few things that you would want to check before sending your work off to a printer. So not too tricky, but checking spelling is in. Edit spelling. Check spelling it been like any other spellcheck you've used. So, for example, it picked up the word ever present so I could just choose one of these suggested ones or scared pool, whatever. So that's checking spelling. 45. What is bleed and how do I add it in InDesign?: I'm zooming in here on a pdf of this poster. Nothing. What you notice is here. These are called trim marks. When something is printed, it's normally printed on larger paper and then cut down on a blade comes across it, matches up with these pairs of lines and trims off. No problem with that is, if the blade isn't quite accurate than it counts. Let's say two high. You're going to get a white gap where you don't want one so way around that, Yes, you do this, you add a bit of extra. This is cool bleed Sefton. If the blade slips a little bit, you got a bit of extra room. So the way you do that and in design Yes, you go file documents set up when you put a standard three millimeter bleed value. Unless you're pretty tells you otherwise because you're guide and then you extend any elements out that should bleed off some. For example, this image of new chip leader anything that goes right to the edge that it's like a solid color, like a photo. That's Haider. So then, when you credit Pia, which will do in a minute, you can export that with this extra believed 46. How do I know if I have low res images in InDesign?: Another technical thing that it's important to check is whether you've got any low res images or low resolution images. You might wonder what that means. I clicked on this image. I'm looking at it in the links panel on this bottom section, which you may need toe click on their toe show shows me the number of pixels per inch. It's just one more interesting, the effective PP I. So this tells we got 836 pixels. Porridge, which is way more than we need, needs to be around 300 for that to print properly, so that tells us this is fine. Whereas look at this image tickle you mention will be better notice. The effective resolution is only 68 so that would really print very badly. So just to try and make you see a bit clear what this effective thing means, try bring exactly the same image into a much smaller size exactly the same image, but noticed the effective resolution is 547. That's because it's been made smaller so effectively. The pixels are smaller, so there's more pixels per inch. So if you want a number to Wayne for its 300. Personally. I'm happy if they get a bit lower than that, but it is way lower than that. Then expect the quality of the images to print badly. 47. How to tell if you have missing images or fonts in InDesign: I just opened a doctor, but it's giving me a warning. We talked about missing images earlier on a lovely featuring in design is if you open something where there is a image missing, it tells you straightaway. So that's the first thing to be aware of. Go back and look at video number eight if you want a toe. We kept missing images, but the other thing, you should be looking out for the missing phones again. If you open a document that's got fonts that a used in it that you don't have on your system, it opens up this dialog box and also highlights any funds that that effects in pink. What you will do about it will depend on the circumstances, but your options of either toe substitute that for different funds or install the from that has been used in this document, either via adobe fonts or by buying installing the fund. But maybe that's one for your people toe look at, rather than trying to cover it really speedily here 48. How to create a pdf for a commercial printer from InDesign: So once you've designed your document on you've gone through all the checks to make sure that it will print Okay, as best you can, then you'll create a PdF for your printer. So this is definitely one to talk to your printer about and ask what settings they would advise. But in the absence of that, I'll tell you what I do, which is I would do file on export, she's pdf on. Then you get a bunch of different setting bunch of different presets. This is the one I would use. Pdf IQ one i 2000 and one Quintus is different. Great deal with whatever they say is appropriate for them and then, if you're using bleeds, if your document has bleeds, then you would include those if you want them. And if you want to include these marks that are useful for the printers toe print from then you would include that there's a few other settings. So, for example, dealing export them as single pages or double page spreads. Your printer might have a preference again. Talk to them. Then when you press export, no credit. Pdf. I'll just flip into acrobat and show you that in Acrobat, I've opened the poster in Acrobat Pdf. You can see that the bleeds there, and there's these various things that useful for the printer when they're printed. You might notice how poor the quality of the images we've discussed that earlier, although this one down here, of course, is fine. Again, we discussed that. So there's your final PdF to send to the printer, and that is the end of the process. 49. 48 Goodbye and Next Steps: So that was a bit of a sprint, wasn't it? We've covered a lot in our. So might be, you need to go back and watch some bits again to kind of really embed them. Main thing is practice, but should you want some extra things to look at? Then I've done a whole bunch of other courses. So there's one specifically on print production that's inside my design began as bootcamp cause that features 12 courses. Three of them are InDesign, three Illustrator, Photoshop, and some design theory as well. So you might fancy that. And I've also done a shortcuts cause and InDesign that's two hours long, but that's just working fast within design. So if you feel like you got enough about InDesign and you wanna learn quicker ways of doing things. But anyway, that's quite enough for me.
