1. What is this Course?: everyone. Welcome to the kinetic typography class. My name is Phil 11 and I'm so excited to have you here. Kinetic typography is really awesome. It's one of my favorite things to do as a motion graphics designer. I've been creating connect typography videos professionally and just for fun over the past few years, and I want to teach you how to make your own kinetic typography videos. When you look at a camp flex kinetic typography video and break it down to each element, what you'll find is that most of these animations are very simple, and that's what we're going to be learning in This class will be covering the most popular ways to reveal text to your audience. Why should you take this class from me? I've been creating motion graphics for the past decade, and I started video school online dot com to share my knowledge with the world. Since 2012 over 100,000 students have enrolled in my classes, and most of them really like them. So I encourage you to enroll in the class now because by the end of this class you'll have a fun, kinetic typography project under your belt that I can't wait to see. Thanks so much for watching and I'll see you inside
2. The Course Project: everyone. And welcome to this tutorial today I want to talk about the project that you'll be creating throughout this course. So this is a video that I created a while ago for it. UC Berkeley. It's from a speech by Mario Savio, one of the founders of the Free Speech movement, and you can see a lot of cool stuff going on. And as I mentioned in the intro video, all of these types of introductions and reveals are very simple, actually, when you get right down to it. And so what we're going to be doing is sort of replicating the style of this video in a little bit simpler way. And so let me open up the video that we will be creating in this class, so check it out. Hello, My name is Phil a burner, and I am a video creator and motion graphics designer. I'm the founder of video school online dot com. Thanks for being here so you can see here that this is a pretty simplified version of kinetic topography, but we're going to learn all of the different building blocks, so we're going to learn different ways to reveal the text like cuts, scale animations, position animations, rotating and flipping animations and then reveal animations and putting them all together. You find something that actually pretty incredible, so start to think of a little script for yourself to introduce, which is what I suggest you doing. And then you'll have to record audio as well. You can use your smartphone or your computer. It doesn't have to be professional sounding or anything like that. But just introduce yourself. Tell us your name, who you are and any other fun tidbit about you. So let's get straight into it. We're going to break down this class. Each lesson is going to be about how you create a different seen in this video, so follow along and again. I can't wait to see your projects at the end of the course.
3. Revealing Text with Cuts and Scale Animations: Hey, everyone. And welcome to the first actual tutorial in this kinetic typography course. And this tutorial, we're going to be learning how to make this very first scene, which includes a scale animation and a series of cut animations. In this scene, we're going to learn how to do a scale animation and use cuts within kinetic typography. Now, this is the first time we are in after effects and a couple of notes about that. First, I am using creative Cloud version of after effects. That being said, you can use really any version you have if you have C S six, he has five. Whatever version. All of the techniques that I'm going to be teaching you in this course can be done in any version of after effects. The second thing is that I'm recording this in HD on my 27 inch iMac, and so it would be beneficial for you to view it in HD and full screen on a desktop computer. Now I know all of you won't have giant monitors, and some of you might even be watching this on a mobile device or tablet, which is possible. But for best viewing experience. Watch it on on a desktop computer in HD. Okay, that all being said, let's get straight to this very first scene. So what I'm going to do in after effects is when you start out, what you want to do is click this new composition button down here. You can name this first comp seen one. The preset I'm going to use is HD TV 10 80 29 97 The with is 1920 by 10 80 pixels. The frame rate is 29 97 and for the duration Here, leave the start time Kona at zero. And the duration is going to be five seconds Background color. Just leave at black. So, jet, when you're done with that click, OK, and your new scene opens up, I have my audio that I recorded, and I'm going to take that and drag it onto my timeline down here. What I'm going to do next is press l l on my keyboard twice. What that does is bring up the wave forms of my audio so that I can see where I am actually saying my words now in this audio clip, I recorded this saying twice. So what I'm going to do is just dragged us to the left until my second recording begins. So I know this is where my second recording begins, and I can either play through it with audio by pressing the space bar on in the creative Cloud version or going up here and doing a RAM preview. If you are using a previous version that's in the preview window that you can see if you go upto window preview and there should be a ram preview button. If you are in a a previous version of after effects, another thing you can do is press command. If you're using a Mac or control, if you are using a piece PC and dragged this current time indicator, scrub it through your clip right here and you will actually even be able to hear the audio from your timeline if you are holding down command or control and scrubbing through it. So I know this is the first part of my dialogue where I say hello. My name is Phil Abner, and so I can just play through it and then closed down my work area to something like that and Then what I'm going to do is going to go to composition trim, comp, toe work area, and that trims this work area or this whole composition to the amount of time that it takes to say this first few lines. Okay, so the second thing that we need to do is start typing out our text. So you're going to need a choose a font that you like, and you could choose really anything that you want. I like this font called League Spartan that you can download from the League of Movable type dot com. If you search for League Spartan on Google, you can find it. And I typically use all caps. So I'm just going to type out my words one layer at a time. So I'm going to take my text tool, click and say hello. Then what I will do is select this Hello, layer. I will duplicate it. Pressing command D on my keyboard control the if you're on a windows. So if I ever say command, do you just know that on a PC you would press control instead of command? Then I know that the next text is going to need to be smaller, so I say hello. My name is Philip Inner. So what we'll do is select the second text layer and drop down the size to something like 200 pixels. And then what I can do is take my selection tool, move it just so I can see it. And I'll just say my so I just double click and change the text. I go back down here. Duplicate, double click this layer Name, type and name Click again Down here on name duplicate. Double click is click is duplicate command D type in my first name. Duplicate again. Evan. Er now what I have to dio is using my selection tool is move these this text around now the first thing is that the my hello text disappears. So what I'm going to do is just move the all these layers from my toe. Eb inner. My name is Phil. Evan er I'm going to move these over to the right because after this way for him right here . You see this bump? This is where I say hello. Hello is going to disappear and hello is going to go right in the middle of the screen. How do we get it in the middle of the screen Will open up your align window. If you goto the window in a line, you have this a line window and click the horizontal center and vertical center and that puts your text or whatever layer you're choosing directly in the middle. Then what I'm going to do is cut this hello text right here at the start of where I say my what I can do to cut is press option. Right bracket. If you're on a PC, that's Ault, right Bracket. And so now the hello text is cut. And so that's the first type of reveal or edit we're going to be learning how to do with kinetic typography is just a simple cut. And so I can see down here my way forms where I can play through it or scrub through it, holding command and scrubbing. And what I'm going to do is just line up my text so I can see that this is where my starts This is where it name starts if I just play through it again. And here's where Phil, Evan or starts before I start moving these texts around too much. One thing I like to use is the proportional grid. So click on this proportional grid down here and that opens up this so that you could kind of align your text. Make sure that it's centered are on the same line. You can also use rulers and the regular grid if you want. So I'm just going toe line this text. So my name is so start something like here. Another thing you can use to align different layers is if I select these three text layers and I use my align panel right here and say a line, it will make it all lines. So see, if I put this like so so it's not online and then say Lined, it will align it. So that's a good trick to use if you're doing kinetic typography. So then I'm going to make fill a lot bigger. So let's say like three 50 and then a banner was a lot smaller. But one thing about kinetic typography and just design in general that I like to dio I'm going to take off this proportional grid is I like to make the spacing between all of my words similar. So you see the spacing between my and name and name and is in my and Phil. I want that spacing to be similar just looks prettier in my eyes, and so I will now select all of them and put them pretty much centered. Now it doesn't have to be necessarily centered perfectly because in our sample video you will see that there is actually some motion that will be adding at the very end. So there's a little bit of motion, and so if it's not perfectly centered, that's totally fine. Okay, so now if we play through this, we can see that it's the Texas being cut onto the screen in a good timing. The one thing that we want to do now is add the scale animation to hello. So scale animations is, ah, very popular well, way to reveal text and also any type of layer. And so the first thing that we want to do is make sure that our anchor point is in the center of this Hello text I have downloaded and I use a script called Move Anchor Point. If you go to Google and search for move anchor point after effects, you will find a script that you can install, and what this allows you to do is with the click of the button. It moves the anchor point to the middle of your layer. You can move it to the right, to the to the left, to the right, to the top wherever you want. If you don't want to install that way you can do is use this pan behind tool up there and then click on the anchor point and move it around with after effects CC. It kind of snaps to the center, so it's a lot better than in previous versions. And the reason why we want to do that is because when we bring up our scale so press with this. Hello, Text selected press s on your keyboard. We want to scale from the middle. We don't want to scale. Say I put it up in the top, right? We don't want to scale from the top, right? Sometimes you might want to do that, but for now we want to scale from the middle. So about right when hello is starting to be said, I'm going to set a key frame for the scale, which is clicking the stop watch right here. And then I'm going to go back five or so frames and drop this down to 100. So now if I play through this, you see hello, come on the screen. But I'm going to do two things to make it look even better. I'm going to select both key frames, right click, go to Key Frame assistant and click Eazy E's. So that eases this animation and it creates a more fluid motion. It's still so fast, so you can't really tell much, so that helps a little bit. I'm also going to add in motion Blur. So that's this column right here with the three circles. Click that motion, blur right there and then enable that motion blur right here. Click that motion blur, So that's pretty cool. But the one thing I want to add to is I wanted to kind of bounce onto the screen. Right now, it's going directly from 0% scale to 100% scale. I want it to go from zero to about 110 and then dropped down to 100 an easy way to do that is to select our key frames, and they must be Eazy E's. To do this, select your key frames. Click this graph editor. Make sure that you are viewing the value graph and not the speed graph, which you get to by clicking this choose graph type but in and selecting value graph. Just going to zoom in, impressing the plus and minus keys on my keyboard. And now you see this graph? It goes from 0 to 100%. This is the scale. If I click on this red square right here, that's where our key frame is. You see these yellow handles? If I drag this handle up, you will see that I'm able to actually increase the size. So it goes from zero to something like 110 and then back down to 100%. Now, if I play through this, you see a little bounce, and it just makes it a little more dynamic. So I'm going to click that graph editor so I can see my regular timeline. Stretch it out, play through it again. That's pretty cool, you know. So it's very basic. It's just using cuts in scale animations, but that, again, is the building block of kinetic, complex, kinetic typography videos. So things were watching. Go ahead and start practicing this technique, and then we'll move on to the second scene, which is this one where we'll be learning how to use position animations to create connect topography in the next video. See then.
4. Revealing Text with Position Animations: welcome to the next step in the kinetic typography course. Today we're going to learn how to add position animations like thes. So the next thing we're going to do is actually what we can do is just duplicate seen one. So select this composition and press command D or controlled the If you're using a PC double click to open it up, and I'm just going to delete this text that we create the last time. Then I'm going to drag this audio to the left and make sure to extend it. So we get the next section of the audio. So play there. It just to make sure we have the whole thing. Whoops. I don't have enough. So I'm going to have to extend this composition by going up to composition composition settings just going to be safe and called us five seconds going to extend this a little bit more and extend our layer, and I can see this is really where it ends. So what I'll do is now closed down our work area, go to composition and trim, comped a work area so the text or the voice says, and I am a video creator and motion graphics designer. So what we're going to do is just take our textile and add all of that text and and again, just do the same thing. Selectable Kate, I I m a video creator. I'm going to use the Amper Sam's for the and there and motion graphics designer. Thanks for being here with me. OK, so now what I'm going to do what? This one is just using my ah selection tool. Just put these into place. However, I want it. So what I did was something like motion graphics designer over here. I did video creator over here that the and somewhere in the middle. And then and I I m a for these in order. So again, I'm just gonna make sure that these are all lines so select. And I am thinking toe going dyslexic, and I am apps. I m A is gonna make sure that they're aligned with my aligned tab. Hey, look aligned Gonna put them somewhere up in the middle, make sure that the spacing is pretty. Even something like that. Video creator in motion graphic designer. I'm going to make the text a little bit smaller and Then I'm going to take both of these and aligned a center so horizontal center move it up like this. Same with motion graphics designer horizontal center that I'm going to just play with the distance between these text, something like this, and then the and sign. I'm just going to increase something like this. Okay, there we go. So now what I'm going to do is I'm going to go to 10 frames. I'm going to select all of my layers, all my text layers, press p on my keyboard and hit this key frame button, the stopwatch. So now all of these layers have a key frame at 10 frames. I'm going to scrub back to zero frames de select all the layers. And now I'm just going to move all of these layers off of the screen. What I'm going to do is zoom out a bit. Saul assumed like 33%. I'm going to just move these layers somewhere off screen, so I kind of like these top four flying in from above. I like video creator flying in from the side and I'm holding shift down. Why move these two so that it stays locked on this horizontal line. If I don't hold shift, you see that it kind of moves up and down and I'm going to go from the bottom and then with the motion graphics designer all the way over here on the right. So everything off screen now now what I'm going to do is select all these key frames like we did before and do a Eazy e's What I can do instead of right clicking and going to keep cream assistant than Eazy E's is just hit F nine on my keyboard. And then I'm going to go to my graph editor. I'm going to change from value graft to speed graph just to add a little pop to this zooming in. I'm going to select all these key friends on the left, drag him over to the left. All these key frames on the right drag him over to the right so it kind of gives it a pop, and you see, they all pop on right there at the very beginning of this animation been turned off my graph editor, zoom out. So that's all very fast. So now what we have to do is starter them. So looking at this wave form and playing with the I can say and I m a so a comes a little bit earlier. Now, I am video creator and Ma Motion graphics designer. Something like that. Then we play through it. So that's pretty good. Motion came out a little too late. I think I am. A came out a little bit too late as well. Some motion graphics, Still a little bit too late. And that's what it all it is is playing around tweaking with the speed of things and seeing how it does. Okay, so this is really good. I'm gonna zoom it back in to fit up to 100% so you can see better. So one thing just a quick tip that I want to give you is what happens if you add all these key frames and you want to move all of this text and you don't want to go moving this text because Sam, move it down a little bit. Now, what happens if you press p on your keyboard is you have a new key frame and so it moves here and then there zoom back in. So I don't want to add another key frame to any of these layers. What I can do is go toe layer new. No object. This is basically a fake into the invisible object that we can use to edit other layers. If I select all of our my text layers and go to this parent column and drop it down and say , Parent to knowl three or I take what this little twirly thing, it's called a pick whip and drag it and drop it on No. Three. What that is saying is that whatever happens to know three will have to these layers. So now if I press scale for the knoll layer and increase the scale, I can do some cool stuff with it. I can also change the position. You can change the rotation, for example, and I can even enemy this if I want to. So say I want to animate so animate from two degrees to zero degrees. That's kind of cool. Or I can do a quick little when this and is coming up. I can do another sort of rotation, something like this. So this was, you know, you gotta play with this and add some more maybe scale animations and everything to this. So maybe zooms in a little bit. I didn't do this on my original video, but I just want to show you how to do this. So pressing the scale and adding these key frames. That's kind of cool, too. So, yeah, just playing around with it, you can add different things, and that's one way to add motion to an entire composition. So obviously this doesn't work, because now motion graphics designer comes off the screen, so we'll make sure that we don't go to big something like that. Okay, so that is a position animation. That's how you use the knoll object to change an entire composition and that is are seen to in the next video. We'll be going over how to do rotation animations, including flips and all kinds of cool stuff. Talk to you later
5. Revealing Text with Rotation Animations and Flipping Text: everyone. Welcome to the next step in creating connect typography. Today we're learning how to do this scene, which includes a lot of different rotation animations, including some three D rotations. So what I'm going to do again has duplicate my scene to command d Open that up, then delete all these layers. Press l l on my audio so I can see the wave forms and drag this to the left until I have my full sound for this little scene. And so here I am lucky to have the whole sound here. Just gonna drag in this work area on the right side. Go to composition trim, Compton work area. So this audio says I'm the founder of video school online dot com. So I'm going to add all of that text, so I'm gonna have to make this smaller. So what I'll do is just start by making it smaller and then just at our all our attacks, you know the drill. Lundy, founder of you can see that I am actually separating the words in video school online dot com so that they come up individually. Okay, so let me just place these first. So that's kind of what we've been doing. We create the techs and we place them. So videos school online dot com. So this will be a little staggered dot com will be a lot smaller. So something like this let's just move this down, staggered a little bit more something just to give it a little bit of more interest to it and then just kind of center it onto our screen. Then I'm the founder of I think before I said I am, But I'll just do I'm the founder. I guess I do say I'm all right now just select all these and move them in the middle. I think I want these to be smaller to actually. So this move these, make sure that they're aligned properly again. Just playing with the spacing between the text. Try to center these a bit, then move this Vegas go online text up a bit. Okay, so now we have all this stuff laid out. What we're going to then do is add our animation and we're doing rotation animations. So first I'm going to animate I'm the founder of So First let's do I'm I'm going to solo this layer so you can see what I'm working with. This is a solo button right here, this little dot If you click that hides all of the other layers, it doesn't get rid of them and just hides them. All right, So I'm going to then turn on this three d layer, and I'm actually going to turn on three D for all these layers. Is this column right here with the Cube with the I'm tex, I'm going Toe press are to bring up rotation, and I'm going to actually. Then take my pan behind tool and make sure that my anchor point is in the middle. I'm just gonna zoom in here too, so you can kind of see what I'm working with. Better that I'm going to take my Y rotation. You can see as I start to rotate it, you can see what can happen. And, like always, we're just going to add some key frames and animated. So at about 10 frames, I'm going toe hit a key frame for the UAE rotation at zero. I'm going to go back in time and rotate it to the left. Positive, like, 80 degrees or so. Then what I'm going to do is select these F nine on my keyboard. Two had Eazy e's Go to my graph editor. I'm on my speed editor and just drag in these end points right here like we've done before to add a little bit more Cunth a little more pop. And then what I'm going to do is add motion blur to all these layers in motion. Blur is enabled, and what I want to do is actually go back to my graph editor. I don't want it to slow into the animation. I wanted to go fast at the start and then just really slow down and maybe make it a little slower. So I'm just gonna go back, turn off my graph editor and extend the second key frame to about 15 frames. That looks pretty cool. Now I'm going toe unsold. Oh, this layer and going to zoom out a bit and to zoom out and move around. What I'm doing right now is pressing space bar and dragging the composition with this hand tool is the handle right here. But just pressing the space bar allows you to use it to without actually moving anything in your composition. You're just moving the actual composition itself. So then what I'm going to do is I'm going to select thes two key frames for the UAE rotation of I'm I'm going to copy it, Command C. I'm going to go to the start of my composition and I'm going to go paste it onto the founder of Whoops. I didn't mean to do that, because what happens now is it's rotating from the bottom and not from these center. But that actually kind of looks cool. I might do that. So with actually, with my I'm, I'm going to select this and I'm going to move my pan behind tool to the bottom left. That's pretty cool. Now I'm going to select all these press are to bring up rotation or just you to bring up the key frame for that Y rotation. And then I'm just going to play with road starting rotation for some of these. So see how founders still on the screen quite a bit, but I'm going to do is rotate it just a bit more with the looks. Good with im, I'm going to rotate it just a bit less and with the of I'm going to rotate it just a bit more as well. These things happened so quick that it doesn't have to be perfect. And you can see now if I zoom out of my timeline, I guess I am zoomed out the whole way, and I placed thes. So I'm the founder of those Are These Way forms right here. So you see that? That's pretty cool. The only thing that's kind of weird is this founder, So I'm going to take founder and rotate it a little bit less, actually. So that's pretty cool. Now we have an rotation animation for our I'm the founder of The next thing we're going to do is add a little flip down for our video school online. We can see this in art template right here. I'm the founder of video school online dot com, and it kind of swings down. That's what we're going to be doing. So what I'm going to do is select all my videos, go online text. I'm going to take my pan behind tool and I guess have to ghost individually and drag it to the top. Anywhere on the top is fine, so It's like news layers. Move the anchor point to the top. Now I'm just going to do one of them again. So I'm just going to solo my video layer. I'm going to zoom in here and with my video Larry selected I'm going to press Are I'm going to do X rotation now? So what I'm going to do here is that one second I'm going to set a an ex rotation at zero. Gonna press you. So all I see is the one key frame and the one rotation, the X rotation. Then what I'm going to do is go back to zero frames and rotate back up. So now it rotates from zero to or from negative or from 94 degrees to zero, and that flips down. But I want to create some sort of swinging action so it looks like it's swinging down. So, around 15 frames, what I'm gonna dio there are 13 frames. I'm going to swing it all the way down and passed the resting point to, like, negative 27. And then I'm going to go toe like 22 frames and swing back to something like 10 or 11. I'm going to extend this to a minute or a second and five frames and then goto about a second and go back up to negative five degrees. So you see that this is now coming together. The speed isn't great, but you see that it kind of swings down, swings back and finally rests at its final resting point here. A quick thing to do is add Eazy E's o F nine. That kind of helps, But then I'm going to go into my graph editor. I'm gonna zoom in here and let's think about this really quickly. So this is showing the speed of the graph. So here we have a negative 500% or 500 pixels per second. Here I have our degrees per second. Here it's going upto 200. But if we scrapped through this, we see that's falling down. And where should it be? Slowest. It should be slowest when it reached reaches the peaks of its swing, so it should be fastest when it reaches the bottom. So what I'm going to do is extend this key frame in like this so that at the peak it's moving its fastest, and then When it rests at the top of the rotation, it goes slower. And so all these key frames are at the tops of the rotation at the peak. Imagine a swing. It's where the person on the swing is going up and down, and mo mentum carries them up, and they kind of stay up at the top for a second. Then they swing down and at the bottom they're moving the fastest that they have ever moved . And then at the top, they arrest again. So let's see what this looks like. So that looks pretty good. It swings better, is more natural looking. The only thing that doesn't look so natural is that I think it should swing up even more. So I'm going to go to this key frame and go to negative 35 here. I'm going to go back to maybe 20. This 1 may be negative 10 degrees. Now that looks pretty good. I'm just gonna extend this exhortation just a little bit. The last resting point. And now what I'm going to do is select all these key frames unsold low. Go back to the start of my composition, select my school online dot com and Paste Command v. So we see now if I zoom out to fit all 100% this stuff swings onto our frame. Now I just have Teoh put them in the right position. It's a video school, online dot com something like this. So the problem with this we're getting that some sort of weird thing going on here at the very beginning. That's because the rotation is off. So I'm just going to select this school rotation press. Are I'm going to rotate to like 89 degrees? Same with this one With the online press are go to this first key frame and rotate to like native early 87. Same with online are and rotate like 82 or so Cool. Now that is how you head swinging text to your videos, and it's another really modern type of technique. I see it all the time. You can do all sides sorts of other types of rotations. Utkan. Rotate them from the center. You can rotate them from the bottom. You could do Z rotations, which would be like this Tepper rotation, all sorts of things. And again, you can combine these with scale and position animations just to make them even more dynamic. But for our purposes, this is great. I hope you enjoyed this lesson. I know it was a bit longer, but I think this technique is something you'll enjoy using in your own videos. Thanks so much for watching, and we'll see in the next tutorial.
6. Revealing Text with a Wipe Reveal: welcome to the next tutorial and the last one for setting up our text animations. Next will be looking it at our backgrounds and adding some wiggle to our our compositions. But for now, let's just create this things for being here animation. And this is a reveal. You can see that the Texas being revealed basically out of nowhere. And this is a fun technique to use in all sorts of motion graphics. So what I'm going to do is take my scene three duplicated. Open it up. As always, select all my text layers and delete them. I'm going to drag over my hello audio. Just take this final bit, Going to leave a little bit more on so that it stays. I can keep it on the screen for a bit longer and goto trim Compton work area. So now I'm just going to add the text to my seat scene. Things were being here so kind of me. Thanks. Four being here that I'm just going to move it around. I'm going to move the things for being here for being here at the bottom. I'm going to increase the size of this. Thanks. Something like this right at the top. I'll make it really big this time. Maybe I'll use my ally into center. It perfectly things for being here. And this is kind of fun to be small right here. I don't necessarily need it to be the width of the things. So I just put it right about here. That's centered, and I'll just select all this and move it down a bit. Just select all and moved down. Okay, So how do we do? A quick and easy reveal of this? It's with something called track Mats. Now, this is going to take a little bit of extra work, but I'm sure you can follow along. So what you want to do is go up to your shape tool or your rectangle tool right here, De select anything down here in your timeline. You don't want to be selecting anything. Make sure you have a fill, so make sure that it's actually not set to none, but set to solid color. It doesn't matter what color it is. And then with stroke, just set that to zero. And then what we're going to do is draw a shape over our thanks text try to match it up as much as possible, but make sure that it covers everything. Then what I'm going to Dio is I'm going to move my shape layer right on top of my thanks layer, and then I'm going to in my things layer, See this track? Matte column said that from none to Alfa Matt shape layer one on What that's basically doing is wherever the shape layer is the thanks text is able to be seen where it's not, it's not able to be seen. So if I take this Thanks, Tex and I move it around, you can see that it starts to disappear where the rectangle isn't. So I'm going to take this rectangle, move it up. I'm just selecting and using the up arrows on my keyboard to move it right at the bottom of the things. So now I'm going to add just a position animation. So we've already done this, but this is how you do the reveals press p with their things, text at 10 frames or so. I'm just going to set a key frame for a position, go back to zero, and I'm going to move my thanks text down. I'm also going to add motion blur toe all my text layers and Eazy E's to this layer and right with my graph editor, make it pop a little bit, selecting both key frames drying them in. And there you have a nice pop reveal. So the next thing we're going to do is add this through the same process for the rest of the text. So, with our rectangle tool, make sure nothing select down here in our timeline, we're going to just just create a big rectangle that covers all of these text layers. Drag this shape layer to to right above four. And with the four text changed, the nun track matte to Alfa Matt shape layer to now take this shape layer two and move it just down to the very top of this text. Duplicate it moving above being duplicated again and move that new layer above here. Now take the here to their lair. Changed the track matte from none Toe Alfa Matt Shea, player for the being from none Toe Alfa Matt shape layer three. And now what we can do is at our 10 frames select all of our text layers. So here, being four press P on our keyboard to bring a position, said a key frame, Go back to zero. Move all this text up because it's going to be revealed down. Select both key frames F nine on your keyboard to add Eazy E's graph editor Select the key frames drag in to create this pop and now we can see what it looks like. So a nice little pop, A little bit of motion blur looking really good. I'm just going to select all press s s to close down everything. Select my audio, open that up and then I'm just going to drag my text layers to the right. So four should be about here for being. Let's see where this about like so thanks for being here a little late to drag these to the left a bit so you can see that sometimes when you're listening to something, you'll notice that the end of the animation is where you want it to be. On this on the screen when it's being said, There you have it. That's a pretty cool little animation. The last thing we did was added an exclamation point so just going to add this exclamation point, Center it down at the bottom of this of the composition. Make sure that my anchor point is down at the middle of the bottom. And at the very end, win. Thanks for being here is being appeared on to our screen or revealed. I'm going to add a Skeel animation. So press s for your your exclamation point scale at 100. Go back a few frames said that 20 Eazy e's it. So select both f nine. Go to graph editor, go to our value graph and make this pop a little bit so above 100%. Something like this that's very fast or what I'm going to do is just make this a little bit slower by extending the time between these key frames. And I think it goes a little too high because it starts to go over the being text. So I'm going to go back to my graph editor, Drop it down a bit. Something like that. Very awesome. Now we have our things for being here. Text. We have all of our scenes set up in the next video. I'm going to be teaching how to put it all together and add background
7. Adding a Background: Hey, everyone, welcome back to another tutorial. I'm so proud of you guys. You guys have learned a lot of cool techniques on how to reveal text. Now we're going to put it together and add these backgrounds to it. So what I would do is create a new composition. So just click that new camp. I'll call it full comp to because I already have one created. And I'm just going to make this 25 seconds for now. Click. OK, now I'm just going to drag all of these scenes down here into my composition. Then what I'm going to do is zoom in. I'm going to reorder them so that scene one is at the bottom and seeing four is at the top and then I'm just going toe, line them up. So just like so, this is just a quick, easy way to do so. So now if we take our composition, 25 seconds was way too long, and I'm just going to trim Compton work area. So now we have our whole thing. It looks pretty cool, but it's going to look a lot better if we add different background colors for all of these different scenes. So what I use for a background is just solids. You can do that by present command. Why on your keyboard or going up the layer new, solid and just pick some fun colors. It's up to you what you want to do. I started out with the blue last time. Maybe I'll start out with more of a deeper read something like this, Just click, OK, I'm gonna put this in the background. And so what I did before was I transitioned these from different background to something else. And so what I'm gonna do is duplicate this red solid command D And then I'm going to go toe layer solid settings and then I'm going to change this color. I'm just gonna change it to something like a blue, and then I can duplicate it or just press command why? And create another one. So I'm going to create four different backgrounds for all four scenes command. Why again or duplicated? I guess so. Go to solid settings and change this to our final color, do purple and then just drag these over to match the backgrounds. It doesn't have to be perfect now because it's were going toe enemy them, so we don't want it to just cut. We could have it just cut, but something I want to do is actually have it do a position, animation and swing onto our screen. So what I'm gonna do is press P to bring a position for this background. I'm going to set a key frame right here before the and starts to pop on the screen for this position that I'm going to go back in time and move it up. So go back in time, move it up, and then what I'm also going to do is move this scene below this right here. So now this comes on over our name text. But I wanted to actually come a little bit faster because I don't want my name text to be disappearing in the middle. So what we'll do is move this right here like so so that the full thing comes on over. My name is Text. I'm also going to add a little bit of Eazy e's, and I'm also going to make sure that this is motion blurred and I'm going to do that with all my solid layers and turn on motion blur here. So now this blue royal text or color comes on, I'm also gonna add a little pop to it. So go to your graph editor. I just love doing this. You know, sometimes some people don't like doing it, but I like adding it to most of my animations. So just selecting my key frames go into the graph editor the value graph and dragging in those end points. So now, so that has a little bit more of a pop to it. Okay, so now the next type of animation I'm going to Dio is instead of sliding it over, our techs were going to actually move this text down. Okay, some move this royal blue text down, and this blue tax is going to also move our text down. How am I going to do that? I'm going to parent my scene to to my blue text, and I'm just gonna move it right on top of my blue text. I'm going to pairing it using the pick whip, parenting it to the blue royal color. I'm also going to actually move my green below my royal blue and right here I'm going to just add another animation. So I'm going to set a key frame here so that clicking this little trying diamond icon and maybe I will move it to the right this time. So now this move to the right, and since we parented the scene to text to it, it all moves. So let's watch it one more time. It comes over, and now it swipes to the white, their hate. So now we have our green text, and then what I'll do is just copy and paste this position animation at the very beginning of the blue text. I will add it to my deep purple text right here, and I will just paste it. So now I have this position animation on this right here. So there's comes down. But maybe what I'll do is I will actually move this first key frame. So I have my time indicator on my first key frame, and I'm just gonna move it down below. So now it comes up instead of from the top. So now let me go zoom in here and play through this. So that's pretty cool. Let's play through the whole thing. One more time, so we have the blue swiping over it. Then we have the blue moving to the right, and then we have the purple or the magenta flying over it. The one thing we did here, though, is we added a layer of text right here or a layer of color to split up these text layers. So I'll do that as well. So right here I want to add another layer. So I'm just gonna press command. Why? Well, maybe we'll do a gray layer, and I'm going to move it below this scene too. So we see our text. I'm just gonna move it right here, So just moving it around and what I'll do now is I'm going toe animate it in. So right here after and I am comes onto the screen, I will press p to bring a position, and I will just add a little animation up. I'm gonna add motion blur. Eazy e's make it pop a little bit with my graph editor zooming in. So this is a lot of repetition, but hopefully you get the hang of it by now. Zoom out so I can see where I'm working. Just put this right here, so I can see in motion graphics. Okay, so this is kind of cool. What I don't like about this is that the text is moving and this gray background is not moving. So what I'm gonna do is actually copy this or cut it. So, command X, I'm going to go into this scene too. I'm going to paste it here. Okay, So we now have this gray layer, and if I press you, I can see the key frames. I wanted to come up right before the video's creator comes up. So I'm gonna move this layer below all the text. I'm going to go back a bit before a video creator pops on. So something like this. And now this pops on right before video creator. And now, if I parent this dark grey solid to are no. Three, what will happen is when this rotates, the grey will also rotate. And I am a video creator, and it rotates when motion graphics comes on. So now if we go back to our full comp instead of it not looking that great because it didn't move with that text. It does move again. Cool. So that's how you add backgrounds. And I think just changing the colors and adding animations to the background really makes it look more dynamic rather than just having one solid background, you could also then go in and add some texture to this, which I'll show you how to do in the next video.
8. Add a Texture to Your Background: everyone in this quick video, I'm gonna show you how to add texture to your videos. I dallin this paper texture. You can search for paper texture and Google and find lots of cool free ones. Just bring it in here. I'm going to drop it on top of my composition. I'm going to change the scale because it's kind of big right now, so drop the scale down quite a bit and then I'm going to play with my blend mode, which is right here in this blend mode column. What I can do is press shift and then plus and minus on my keyboard to shift through all the different blood modes. And if that doesn't work, just go through the blend modes by clicking the drop down and selecting your blend modes. You can see that it has a lot of cool ones. I typically like overlay or soft light. I think for this one, I'm going to use soft light. I'm also going to drop the opacity so press tea on my keyboard. That brings up opacity, that I'm going to change that to 50%. So it's not as harsh, but it just as a little bit of texture and looks a little bit more interesting than just solid colors. That's not something I did in my original video, but I actually like that kind of style. You can use all sorts of the kinds of different textures from paper, would play anything you want, you can make it and it will look pretty cool. So that's how you add textures to your background. Next, we're going to learn how to add that wiggle to our text.
9. Adding Camera-like Motion to Your Scenes: Hey, everyone, welcome to the last kind of lesson in this Siris in there are going to be a couple more lessons that I've created in the past that show you some other techniques in how you reveal text in different ways. But for this, all I'm going to do is add wiggle to this text. There's different ways to do it. You can add different cameras and all that kind of stuff. But an easy way is just to add these the wiggle preset to our scenes. So type and wiggle in your effects and presets window. If you don't see that goto window effects and presets and take this position animation or you can even do gelatin and what gelatine does, it makes it super funky. But I'm just gonna do position, drag it to our first scene and just play through it to see how you like it. So I'm just gonna play through it. It's a little slow for me, and it moves kind of far. So what I'm gonna do up here in my effects controls panel has changed the wiggle speed to 1.5 wiggles percent second and the wiggle amount from 50 to 25 So it's a little bit faster , and I think it just looks better that way. Then I'm going to take this wiggle and this transform property up here, select both and copy them and then just select my other layers scene to Scene three in Scene four and paste it. So now if I play through it, so it's pretty cool. The only problem I'm noticing right now, though, is that the actual gray background in this now has this wiggle to it, and it kind of you can see the edge and I don't like that. So I'm going to delete this wiggle from there. I'm going to go into this text. I'll select all of my text layers and add wiggle. And that is actually pretty cool because the ads it individually to the different layers. So it's not all happening at one time. And so now if I go to my full comp and render it out, I actually really like that now. It might not work for all of you. Sometimes you might want all the text in one scene to move similarly, so it kind of looks like a camera shake. That's what this effect is going for. But for me, I kind of like that effect so you can apply the wiggle to individual text layers or entire scenes. Um, and the only thing that didn't make this work is because the background, this great background I didn't want the wiggle to be affecting that great background in that one scene. So, anyways, that's how you quickly add wiggle to your text layers and your motion graphics to add sort of a camera motion type. Look, thanks for watching, and we'll see you in the next video.
10. Exporting Videos from After Effects: everyone. Welcome to this tutorial where we'll learn how to export our video, and you can then posted through the class. So with your final comp selected, make sure that it shows everything that you want and that at the very end it doesn't get cut off like this. I'm going to actually move in this comp work area just a bit so that at the end it still is on the screen and then go up to composition. Add to render queue. This will open up your render queue, and typically, I just use the H 264 setting. So there's this little drop down button next to lossless for H 264 If you don't have age to 64 sometimes on Windows, you won't have h 264 Just click that text the lossless text and use like a quick time format. If you change this format too quick time and then you go to format options, you can go to video Kodak. I use H 264 You can use Apple Pro rez. If you have that, you can use MPEG. You can use MP four. If you have that, I would suggest using H 264 Because that is a high quality video with a low side file size . Make sure that your audio output is set to on or auto. If you do have audio and it's on auto, it will export your audio with your video and then click OK, and then where that says output. To click on that text. This will open up your your ah dialog box, asking where you want to save it to. I'll call this intro video to and just click, save and choose where you want to save it. Think like render and it will render it out. And once it has rendered out, it will open up or it will be in your finder or your documents. So on a computer, go to your computer documents for me. I'm going to my finder, and I can find it in this connect Typography folder. I have my original one here and depending on how fast your computer is, it will take longer or shorter to export your kinetic typography videos from after effects . But here I have my final version. It has the texture. It has the wiggle. It has all kinds of cool stuff that makes this a very cool video. Thanks so much for watching this. The next thing you should do is take this video posted on YouTube or Vimeo and then share it with the class so that the rest of us can see thanks so much for watching, and we'll see in the next videos.
11. Revolving 3D Text Animation: everyone. Welcome to this new tutorial from video school online. This isn't after effects were going to be creating rotating text like this. You've probably seen this type of text animation in a number of commercials and TV shows Nowadays. I see this type of transition all of the time, and I got a question on YouTube asking how to do this. They were actually referring to this specific video hive, um, video itself. You'll see the sliding text right here, so that's pretty awesome. And that's what we're going to be creating is gonna end up looking just like this. So let's get straight to it. I always recommend watching in HD full screen for these tutorials, so we're going to dive into after effects. The first thing you want to do is create new composition. I'm going to create one that's 1920 by 10 80 and five seconds long is perfect 29 97 frame rate, and I'll just call this full text. Come and then I'm going to create another composition. So click that new composition, but in I'm going to call this text one, and I'm going to make it 1000 pixels by 200 pixels. 1000 wide by 200 tall. Same five seconds. Actually, we could probably make it two seconds. Let's go to make it two seconds. Okay. So going back to my full text comp, the first thing we're going to do is add a little background. So let's just go layer after layer, new, solid or command. Why, If you're on a Mac or control, why, if you're on a PC just going to call this BG for background and let's pick something a little more fun, something like a dark Ishara, lightest turquoise color. All right, then. Go over. Let me just close some of these old tabs that I had been working with for my other test. Okay, so go ahead and open text one. And what I'm going to do is just type in some text, so let's just call this Hello. Okay, so it's loading up in space, so I'm just gonna drop it down. I'll just I'll just say welcome. Like, I didn't another one. Welcome. Just put it centered. Right in this box is perfect. The more that it fills up the box, the better it will look. But it doesn't necessarily have to fill up this box. Now go to our full text comp and drop in our text one on top of our background. And I'm just going to lock my background so I don't mess it up at all. Then what? I'm going to do it with my rulers, which, if you don't have rulers, go up to with a view and show rulers or command are and then drag out a ruler to the left side of this box and one to the right side of this box. So it's kind of hard to see, but I have these rulers at the end of the box, and this will just help me do my rotations. Next. What I'm going to do is with my text one layer selected down here. I'm going to turn on the three d layers by the checking this little cube. Call him right here in this layer and also the motion blur, which I'm also going to enable by clicking this enable motion blur button up here right here around 10 frames. I'm going to press P on my keyboard for position and then I'm going to press the position stopwatch to create a key frame there. Then I'm going to bring up our and I'm going to set a key frame for my Y rotation that I'm going to press you to bring up both my y rotation and position key frames and go back in time. Now we're going to rotate this welcome from the right, so I'm going to move it over to the right so that the center, which is where my anger point is, right where that line is, and then I'm going to rotate it negative around 90 degrees. Negative 80 until it's about off so you can't you can barely see it. And then what I'm going to Dio is go to about 10 franc, one second and 10 frames. I'm going to set another key frame here for position. And why rotation that I'm going to go to 20 frames, one second and 20 frames and move it to the left so that the center is along this line and then rotate it a positive about 80 degrees or so. So now if I play through this, you'll see the basic effect that we're getting that's pretty cool is just not as fluid as I would like. So what I'm going to do is select all of these key frames and press F nine on my keyboard or right click key from assistant Eazy E's. Then what I'm going to do is click this little graph editor button up here. Let me just bring this up a bit so we can see more of our graph editor and what this does, it allows us to animate the speed of our animations of our key frames, basically, So make sure that you are viewing the speed graph and not the value graph by clicking this button right here, which allows you to choose the speed graph. Now, select all of your key friends by clicking and dragging over the key frames. The key frames are where these little boxes are on the graph. Then what I want to do is speed into. I wanted to be very fast into the animation, but kind of slow down as it gets to its resting spot in the center. So first, actually, women just select this key frame right here. I'm gonna zoom in just with the plus button on my keyboard and by selecting these key friends Which is that? Why rotation in the position? Ah, key frame. I can select these little yellow bars and dragged to the left. And what that saying is that you can actually see this speed where it ramps up really fast , and then it slows into this animation and then same goes here. I'm going toe ramp out of that so it's a little bit slower, but it's faster at the end. So now if we let me just zoom out and we can play, I want to make sure that these match a little bit. So I'm going to just drag these a little bit more and then if I play through it, so that's getting to be look a little bit better. The one thing that's missing I'm going to get out of my graph editor is that after it rotates to the left, you still see it on the frame right here. So what I'm gonna do at this key frame right here is put my time indicator right there and then press option right bracket, which cuts this layer at that key frame. So now it disappears after that, which is pretty good. Okay, so this is the basic animation and now we're just going toe duplicate this text. The reason why I did it in a pre comp is so that I can just quickly copy and paste these key frames to the next text box. Basically. So let's just take this text one. Duplicate it by pressing command D. Now it's called text five because I already have other text to pre cops in here. But I'm going to rename the pretext to I'm going to open up and August call this welcome everyone. You can put whatever text you want. You could change the font if you would like I'm using for future then going back to my full text comp dragged this text down here to my layer and put it a little bit offset. So not right where these key frame start. I don't want to line it up with that first key frame. I'm going to put it about three or four frames to the right. Now I want to turn on three D layer first and motion blur, and then what I'm going to do is copy these key frames from my text one. So selecting them dragging over them and present command. See then selecting this layer right here my text to at the very beginning. Make sure your time indicators at the very beginner. Big beginning Press command V. And now if you press you, you will see the key frames for this and what I'm going to do is just drag this to the left or what I can do. Is it set my time indicator at this last key frame An option right bracket to cut it off. Now let me just play through this. And now we have rotating text and we could play around with the speed of this. So maybe make this a little bit later. One key frame later. So just nudging it to the right. So it's not really overlapping with the welcome text at all something like this, and that's looking pretty good. Now you could go into the graph editor changed the speed a little bit, but this is pretty much what we would be doing. And we just keep duplicating these text layers and adding more and more layers, depending on how many times you want text to rotate and again, you can do this. You can rotate in opposite ways. You can rotate it, um, from up above you, if you like. But this is the basic animation that ah, that a lot of people use. So pretty awesome. There's one more thing that if you want to add a little bit of pop to your videos, I'm going to show you how to do it. And with this animation right here in the sample, there's a little pop in these size, so it kind of does a little bounce in with the size. And so what I would have done before I even out of this text to his add this to the first text layer. And what I'm going to do is open up the scale for this layer, suppress s and just hit. Keep the key frame button right here to add a key frame, press you to bring up all of our key frames. And then I'm going to go to my my second key frame at 10 frames in his this key frame, but in tow. Add another keeping. Right now. My key frames are at 100% throughout this entire animation, so it's not going to do anything so What I'm going to Dio is change this 1st 1 to like 105 for example. And now I'm going to Eazy e's themselves like both them and press F nine. And let's just add a little bit more Celestri 1 10 So something like that's looking pretty good. I might select both of these and using the value graph. I'm going to add a little bump. So selecting this 1st 1 I'm just going to bump it up just like so. And then let's play through that so something like that could work. And then I would just basically duplicate this one right here and duplicate this 1st 1 right here. So it's going from 100% to 110% and then look at the graph editor again and do a little bump. Like so again, I'm looking at the value graph and not the speed graph, but also with the speed graph may just make it a little more of a pop, something like that. So something like that could be pretty cool just to add a little bit more to your animation . That looks really weird because it's getting cut off. But then I would just duplicate these or copy all of these, Select my text to and Paste. And now, if I play this through, we get a little bit more interesting animation with that little scale bump. So that's this animation. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. If you have any other questions, let me know in the comments.
