1. Introduction: Voices your brand. And how you're speaking
to the external world is a direct representation
of your internal world. My name is Armand military, the founder of Armani talks, a media company which helps engineers and
entrepreneurs improve their communication
skills so they can articulate their ideas with
clarity and confidence. In order to communicate
your ideas clearly, you need to be able to
have a congruent voice. Congruency dictates confidence. In this class, you're
going to understand the basics of how
the voice works. You're going to learn
innovative ways on how to improve your speaking voice. You may get a few bonus
sections as well, along with a final project that will help you improve
your speaking voice. Sound good. If so, I look forward
to seeing you inside.
2. 4 Parts of the voice: It's very difficult to improve something if you don't
know much about it. For the general public. Whenever they're thinking
about the voice, they're thinking about this, blop. It just there. They don't codify it. And when you don't codify it, you can't find out
how to improve it. The voice is broken
down into four parts. Breath, vocal cords,
resonators, and articulators. The breath is the energy. Without the breath,
there is no voice, but breath by itself
doesn't do much. The vocal cords turned
a breath into sound. But sound by itself
doesn't mean much either, especially if it's scattered
all over the spots. That's what the resonators, which is your job, gathers all the sound
in one location. And the articulators are
your lips and tongue, which chop the
sounds into words. Words which are understood
by other people. Whenever you're thinking
about improving your voice, factor in the four
different elements. The more debt you codify these
four different elements, the easier it becomes to
improve your speaking voice.
3. Create your Voice: Before we talk about how to
improve your speaking voice, one thing that we have
to do is make sure that we have the
right philosophy. Because what the philosophy
or behaviors start to work. We're not going to find
our voice. Friend. We are going to
create our voice. This is a huge paradigm
shift because those who have a weak voice, unfortunately
feel hopeless. They're like, Well, I
could take this class, but why even bother? I mean, the voice is fixed. For them. At this stage. The voice really is fixed is because
they think like that. And unfortunately,
there's still thinking as though even though I
think my voice is fixed, eventually I'm gonna
discover how it really is and I'm going
to find it eventually. But that's just not how
the real-world works. In the real-world,
we have to take an active approach to make
sure that we're correctly, uh, playing this instrument
that we've been given for the rest
of this class, understand that you are not
passively finding your voice. Instead, you are
actively creating it.
4. Ways to Build a Strong Voice: When we're physically
week, what do we do? We go to the gym
when we're vocally week where it doesn't sound
like we want to speak. What should we do? We should
take our voice to the gym. For the next couple of videos, I'm going to share
innovative ways on how you can work out your voice. Understand this. You're not just going
for a deep voice. When we don't have a
clear understanding of what a confidence
speaking voice is, we immediately default to deep, but that's not
necessarily the case. Sure, some confident people
do have a deep voice, but all confident people
have a congruent voice. We're going for congruency. What does congruency mean? Congruency means when our mind and our body are aligned
with one another, there is no internal
hesitation that we're feeling as we're speaking. Of course to do this, we have to know ourselves
on a deep level. We have to understand our
body in a deeper level. For the next couple of videos, I'm going to give you some
exercises that you can use in order to unlock
a congruent voice.
5. Read Out Loud: The first exercise is
to read books out loud. Did you know when books were
first becoming a thing? It was only reserved
for the royal people. And the royal people did
not mainly read mentally. They read out loud. They will go in their rooms and they would rate their book. This was the traditional
way of doing things. And as more and more people
got access to books, the more debt it went from being an act where we read out loud. Now doing it mentally. I propose that we go
back to the past. We read out loud. Now if you're gonna
do this exercise, what I want you to do is
get the feel of the book. Breathe life into the world. Every chapter should not be
read in the same exact way. Understand where this author
is coming from and do your best to tap into that emotion that they're
trying to write in. This is why I personally
recommend starting off with fiction books if you're
gonna do this exercise. Because fiction books often have a lot of emotion
packed in it, which helps you out where you are not having to do
too much guesswork. You can be like, okay, this chapter is pretty serious. So how about I speak
in a serious voice? Well, this chapter is
pretty lighthearted. How about I speak in a
light hearted voice? This allows you to
understand that your voice is not just boom, fixed. It's more dynamic. You can play around with
the different tonalities. So I recommend you
play around with a fiction book and breathe
life into the world.
6. Record Videos of Yourself: Another way to improve
your speaking voice is to record videos of yourself
and then watch it back. Why do we want to
watch it back as well? One of the main
reasons why is because our voice is a direct
representation of our internal world. How many times has your voice softened because you're
speaking to someone, but deep inside, you don't feel worthy of speaking to them. You're like, I look ugly
when I'm speaking, I do. I belong in the circle. Am I an imposture? And there's a lot of
negative thoughts which are holding you back from speaking in a congruent manner. When you're recording
videos of yourself. Number one, you're
getting in the habit of articulating your ideas, your practicing
something that's known as externalization. Where you're making
the internal world something that is represented
in the external world. When you're watching
yourself back, you're starting to build a
familiarity of how you look. And the more that you
understand how you look, the more that you
feel confident. Internal state feels way better. This allows for an effortless, strong, congruent
speaking voice. Record some small
talks of yourself and make sure that
you watch it back.
7. Public Speaking: Another way to improve
your speaking voice is through public speaking. You could do public speaking
in a variety of ways. You can volunteer
at your work to speak up more in these
different meetings. You can join a public
speaking club. You can invite a
few friends over and give a speech
in front of them, whichever way that you want to get in the habit of speaking in front of people will help you improve
your speaking voice. The reason why is because
with public speaking, not only do you
improve your voice, you also improve
your body posture. Because when all these different people are looking at you, you're not gonna be slouching. It. Change isn't gonna be heavy. You're going to be up, standing big, standing strong. As if you're going to pick
up a billion dollars check right after your speech,
stand like that. And when you stand like that, it becomes way easier
to allow the breath, which is one of the
components of the voice, to effortlessly come out of you. Practice public speaking,
it's a great way to exercise your internal world
and bond with your peers.
8. Bonus Tips: Here's two more bonus
tips for you to improve your speaking voice. Read a lot and write a lot. I already talked about
reading out loud. But for this bonus tip, you could even mentally read. Why is reading so important? Why is it that people who read a lot began to
develop superpowers? Because of the
linguistics formula, hard skills, a few of the
most important acronyms, R, S, T, E, M, science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics. For linguistics, the most
important letters are our MSW, reading, listening,
speaking, and writing. You want to know something. All four of these
are interlinked. If you're working on one, ironically, you're
improving another one of these acronyms. So by reading a lot, you start to help your mind process words in
a completely different way. To improve the signal, which is the meaningful message, you'd begin to reduce the noise. From there. It helps you out tremendously to speak and a congruent manner. Another thing to
do is write a lot. You could write through Twitter. You can create a journal. You can begin blogging. However you want to do it. Once again, you're practicing externalization and you start to improve the signal of your
mind or to reduce the noise. Through this, it allows you
to effortlessly speak in a congruent way that showcases
the power of your voice.
9. Final Project: For the final project, I want you to choose your mechanism of how you
want to improve your voice. Do you want to read out loud? Do you want to public speak? Do you want to record a video of yourself and watch it back? Whatever it is, it doesn't matter because ultimately
you are going to record yourself doing this
act and you're going to post it in the final project
section, right arm below. If you're going to read a book, just read a few passages
and do your best to embody the emotion that the author
is expressing in that book. If you're going
to record a video of yourself and watch it back, allowed to be a talk on
something that interests you. And if it's a speech,
congratulations for talking in front of
a variety of people. But don't forget to
record it as well. Get that video and post it in the final project
section right on below. I look forward to watching it. If you enjoyed this class, be sure to check out
