About This Class

Hi! My name's David. I'm an illustrator and comic book artist.

I love drawing. It has been my passion since 2015. I've been involved in hundreds of projects around character design. My clients always ask me to create characters that can carry their brands and, as a result, business owners became my main source of income. I want to share my techniques and the skills that I've developed to create simple but expressive MASCOTS that can speak to your potential customers.

In this class, you will learn how to create an engaging MASCOT. Fortunately for you, one of my clients allowed me to create his character at the same time as creating this class. We will follow his guidelines and create a character that he will like. You will see how I work, what my techniques are and how you can reach the same level of artistic skill as me. At the end of the class, you will be ready to create your own character to brand your own product, whether you want to hire an illustrator to do it for you or create it yourself. Your assignment will be to create a character that will speak YOUR voice. Blogging? Business? Social activism? Every aspiration can use the help of a MASCOT.

I'll teach you everything I know about character design. You will need the following : paper, a pen and your imagination. If you want, you can always use a computer and a tablet but I want you to focus on your skills as an illustrator. Draw, first and foremost. That is where everything starts.

This class applies for :
- Graphic Designers;
- Illustrators;
- Comic book artists;
- Business owners;
- Hobbyists and those who love to draw!

I am more than excited to see what you will come up with!

See you in class!

1. Introduction: Hi, My name is David. I'm a cartoonist and the illustrator, and I'm very excited about teaching my first culture class. Are you interested in the wonderful world of mascots? Why should you take my class? Well, the reason is very simple. If you want to take your brand and not further, you got to look at helped create an engaging mascot. A cartoon character. What is the mascot exactly? A mask up is your best salesman cannot die. You cannot expire. A mascot simply evolves based on the market targets. From the moment who bore mascots were part of our lives. They can become business assets used for the products or to promote you off. You can focus your crossing his attention or what you want them to look at. It can also serve to build a relationship based on trust with your clients. In this class, you will study the importance of mascots, will also certain, find inspiration for them. Draw them in digitalized at the and you will be asked to create your own mascot for product that you have or that have to offer. If your mascot is like by your customer base, it will simply ask more of it. It will come to the events where your mascara is so they can take pictures with him, and part of this family takes center glass, for example. Today we know him as an independent character. But did you know that the Red Santa Claus became popular in the Western world? Things to a cook, a cool of marketing strategy? From 1931. Now you're going to say Santa Claus is an obvious choice and you're right. But still, the art of a mascot is still not used by most businesses in the world today. If your mascot is creative enough and speaks, the right voice can become insane money machine for decades to come. In other words, if you want your friend to survive for the years ahead, even after you're gone, a mascot might be the magical formula needed to secure the future. I'm so excited to have you a part of my skill share. Plus, it's an honor to have you as my student. I hope you will enjoy the content and share your work with guns 2. Class Project: As for the class project, you are being asked to create your own mascot for the product that you will sell. Use the following sheet to guide you on the way first. What is your market? Who are you looking to sell? Four. For example. What age are you targeting? What occupation Revenue. Sex? What is exactly the market that you're targeting? Which our mascot Second, what is your product? What are you looking to sell and all? Is your product or service different than your competition? Remember, you have to make sure that you find a characteristic that is unique to you and your product and your mask up. So think about it and write it down and last and the most important. Give us the basic ideas of your mascot. Will it be an animal? An object? A human? Sometimes I use an animal. Other times I use, for example, likable. Sometimes it can be human. The possibilities are infinite. So write down. What are your initial ideas and let's get on the research. One 3. Research: what makes a great mascot? You might ask yourself, Why should my company of Moscow? Because it's the most easiest way to look good in that virginity. In business terms, here are some characteristics that old mascot share. People remember your mask up no matter where you go, matter what you say matters who shakes your hand every time you look at your brand, then look at your Moscow people Might not remember you are name, but they will remember giant tigers ending in front of your perama. Your mask up appeals to your potential customer. When people see your mascot, they want to be with him. For example, if you have someone who really likes making house, it will be drawn to everything Mickey Mouse is printed on that actually valuable cussed collectors. They want everything that, as the name off the brand, your mascot as a great personality, it is approachable. People want to have a real relationship with it because let's be honest. Mascot looks also. The truth is that it's always easier to approach. Someone was looking to our fund. Every time you see him, your mascot speaks your brand. Your mascot is your best salesman he has his own looks and speaks the voice you want him to speak. So whatever Damascus says you say, is a giant puppet with a lot of emotion and personality making shine so your brand can shine. Your mascot is trust worry. If people enjoy your brand, they will look at everything in Moscow. Points out. You want to sell lugs, put your mascot on it. And if your usual products of good quality people will be drawn to buy that, not simply because of the master, we are going to look at the some mascots who actually made an impact for for 20 years of existence. And that, I believe, are the kings of the Mask of Industry. Tony the Tiger Kellogg's We got to Me, the Tiger from Kellogg's Believe to needs to be the man emblem off bailouts. Due to certain aspects of this physique and character. It's joyful, charming and as very nice cartoon shapes, making him fluid and funny to look at. Let's be honest, Who doesn't like a giant pyre? Tony has his own cereal brand has been around since 1950. You created his own merchandise legacy, took pictures with famous celebrities and this part of some collectibles I own myself. This little watch is worth around $100 on eBay, a watch that doesn't even work. People are Julie willing to pay for Tony's fades. $400. Imagine if I could do the same with my own face. Bring my face on the watch and bad $100. I'm not there yet. A waiver. Another important point mentioned is Tony's evolution. A mask up has to evolve. Have first go to me. Looked like a simple do go until he became to me. We know today Kellogg's published told me so around their website, and I rich everyone to see outcome evolved into the tiger that is today. If you study mascots or even brands, you have to recognize that to needs major force to be reckoned with. Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney Company. Now, when we talk about mascots, we cannot in your the king of them all Mickey Mouse from the Walt Disney Company. Make it did it all. He made blood busters movies, build amazing attraction parts that he still enjoyed today, created compass merchandise for everyone to enjoy and use his influence to attract other franchise just all wars and more. About four does. We don't know, make a story. It was created after while this they loved the rights to also hold the lucky rabbit at Universal's to your character. The legend says that it is in 1928 on the train following his meeting with Charles Mann's In the Bad News of This Name, losing the rights to Oz goal that will created a simple doodle of Mickey. There, a mascot that will revolutionize the world was born. Walt Disney Company has been profiting from Mickey since its creation. Even after wall business death in 2000 and 16 Disney became the number one brand in the world. Why is that important? Because of the following quote from Walt Disney, I only owe that we never lose sight of one paper that it was all started by a mouse. The entire success of this business started from the moment Wall created is mascot Mickey Mouse. To this day, it is still the case. Rich Uncle Penny bags monopoly. Still, the richest of the mall must be rich Uncle pity bags or better known as the monopoly. Everyone knows Uncle and his famous Mama. Some say that the Monopoly man was actually the cartoon ized version. Off duty. Morgan, a very successful banker back in the 19th and 20th century uncle was seen in American Dad, and his game sold over 275 million sets in 43 languages and 111 countries. Imagine that Ukraine, a game in a popular TV show, uses damask up for the entire world to see. Would you like that? This is what's for publicity. Looks like still to this day, Monopoly dominates the poor game industry. No one can compete with Uncle. I want you to start digging Pinterest to find what you're interested in. Do you have an idea of a mascot? If Yes, start by creating a board of old pictures like what expressions are you drawn to? What style do you prefer? What covers create interest for you? Are you looking for a minimalist design or more of a complex one? Remember that Damascus must appear in different poses, so you've got to make sure that he's fluid and simple to move around. First grade. A Pinterest account. It should take a minute or two that create your first board started by adding the content that you like. It could be mascots, collars, illustrations. Everything in the end will serve to create. You ask up with his own feeling. They kick eyes inspiration. We are not copying anything. Organize your boards. Make sure that everything is easy to recognize. Another great way to find inspiration is Google type anything you want to see on the Google image. Tabin Bola. You will get thousands of results. We need to be saved on your computer. Remember, the goal is not to copy. It is to find a similar a similar voice that can be spoken by Alaska. Another inspiration you might have is something on someone your own life. My mascot is my vehicle food, which I sadly lost when he was five years old. Still, to this day lives through my comic books as an example. This is the logo I made for my graphic design company. You're sprinting on everything and do he speaks my voice and for me is the perfect mascot that can speak my potential customers. You will told me, as I do allude my clients people he wants his been bold to mask on presenting his brother. So start by feeling that Pinterest or seven. Picture what? Like I'm alive mascot issued. Best opportunity to speak to your customers and let's get on on this kitchen bar. See you soon. 4. Sketching: moving on to the sketch bar. So now we research our character. We saw the model, and we're going to start doing this, get show my first steps or doing the basic shapes based on the character I received from my client. Of course, I'm designing a pit bull on the pit bull as a distinctive squared face square Jaws Square had. So you've got to respect that when you want to trade your mascot, for example, you, the years and everything, depending on the breed of the dog, would change its normal. So you have to respect that issue. You want to create a pitbull war, but you wo r Beagley. It's all different between one another, which makes star really enjoyable to draw. That's my favorite animal, All right, So when I started running, I used basic shapes circles where depending on the model I have, I find this to be the best way to design your character. Of course you can. Some people prefer not to start with the head. I always start with that, and before I draw, I was a clear reference or picture that I use. I just look at the camera, making sure that I'm centered, right? And of course, when you are doing pencil raise whenever you want. Right now, what I'm doing is I'm darkening the lines I know that I would use in the end. Sometimes I just use my my pencil to create basics lines and go back. It's needed. But the more dark and the line is, the more sure I am off the final. The final idea would say All right, it took me around. I was three years to get where I am today, three years off, doing two books. And of course, it can go faster than that wasn't doing that full time. I love it, but you know, if you really wanna draw and I'll do another trust about hearts and drawing. But as for this thing, I just want to show you how I do my things so you can maybe try my way. So I started with the head, and then I moved to the body, and I always tried to keep in mind that initial a model of character that I pictured in my head. I don't use myself along the way goods of right now moving on to this selfie part, I'm so I will draw the phones using to picture himself, and it's a base. On another reference, I used a girl using a foam to that get pic of herself. So I pretty much use the same thing, the same pose, and always use reference where you're not sure of the anatomy. You are anything you see. The dog I do is very entrepreneur perfect, which means that it's based basically in human form, just a dog. But the goal is not to create a foreigner. Get dog you want about that can stand on two legs so there are there are designed differently there than the normal dogs. I prefer to draw dogs like that because there I can make them or human. That way I can bring emotion. It's more believable, mind media. You only way to do it. But I find a dog that resemble the human well. It's easier to relate to him when he has a human form than Conine for a dog form ducky. So I'm going back and forth as you can see, and that the more will sketch the moral become certain of the final design. It takes me around 20 minutes to draw something like that from start to finish. So the more details you put in more time will take you. But make sure that it's not overlord. And with your mask. If you don't want the mask on that as a lot of details, you want detail. But I mean, you know, creating a comic book. You want the character to be able Teoh you want when you want space for your character. You don't want the customer to look at anything else except him. So now I'm drawing a product with his hand. You see, is is thinking yourself and, uh, another nice, cool ways that I don't have to draw the picture in the phone because I'll do that on the computer. So it saves me time. I could redraw the entire thing, but it's no use, So I'm just gonna leave the phone blank and do the final changes on the computer. With that soup, we have our character, which looks pretty sharp, pretty cool. We're gonna submit this to our client or going away for his feedback, and we're moving on to the lining color. See you soon 5. Lining: So welcome back in this to troll that I'm going to show you. I draw using a clip pain or mango studio. It's the program I use. When I put my work digitally, I simply take a picture of the drawing and I upload the upload. It's on my program that I can do pretty much what I want with it. So the first step I knew when I go on, my constituents crave a simple layer, and I draw higher drawing back, using the jeep and tool with black lines. Uh, so you, of course, you can use pretty much all the corners you want. But that's what I do is the most simple way I found to create my drawings, that that I don't want to do digital pending, but I find it so complicated. I prefer to cartoon feeling, which is what I was raised with, right? I also like to see I don't I don't use a shift option when you press shift. When you use a clip, pain gives you a straight like I like that I find it less or banning, which is a personal preference of mine. Of course you can. You can do strange clients if you want. But that's not when I would like for my work. Sometimes I will also play with the layers. When the for example, mines are simply connecting. I want to raise one. I will. Something created layer draw on one layer. You raised the other one and marriage bulls layers together. Which makes it walk easier. We'll see. What is left arm. My client told me that it was a bit weird and would prefer the product to be bigger. So what I will do? I will line the arm and make it bigger. It should. Devin something. Some minutes now. And not is they too. Had any, Like, more details. You see, I put some death to the glasses. Now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna I'm gonna line the arm that I want to be bigger. So the problem. The arm and I was simply selected after that, Uh, something making bigger. I will redo the arm on the computer is doing it on paper. Cynic dip. And I think it be simple. Is that so? My client is happy about that. It's this preference our understanding wants to make focus and some of those I told the arm , and that's it. So what I'm gonna do now, I'm gonna select it your character and he's thinking a selfie. So I'm gonna put the entire drawing simply in the phone, and I'm gonna relying entire character phone, that's it, See are relying the entire thing. I make it less. I would say, Let's help those please on the phone. But that's how we do it. So I simply so like the character copy recited a smaller and just redraw the entire time. It's a process that takes on Simon. Once you have the proper ticking with your tablet, I use a welcome tablet 75 70 box, I think use any words like like a charm for me. Of course, it's always say something professional tablet. But if you want this simply drawing a fun, well, it's the best way for you to do it right. Almost done. Once I'm completed out will merge all the lines in a simple layer. I prefer to do that. People don't, but that's what I was doing, especially with simple going That's this. I don't really care right now. I'm gonna have are gonna precisely Camba get more proportionate. Based on what my plan once and then women won't two colors 6. Colors: so for the next step is very simple. I'm gonna use my clients model, and I'm gonna take pretty much all these colors. But it's great this for So that's what I'm going to use to create a counter factual reference I have from the call you and it's Ah. Well, it's a pretty easy way to do it because you can simply select the color from the picture, for example, and it gives you the exact color. So that's one way to do it. And you could get your client. Exactly. The color is one everything. And I'm pretty much gonna use entire thing. Ginger references carved the red. That's what The quiet ones. I'm gonna do the same thing for his. I'm gonna check exactly with his body where lines are ending. So you see his arm in a, um, innocently cut it like like it does on this dog. So I'm gonna raise that, of course. Of course. Sorry. Bested. Think, use or my drawing. I've been doing for quite some time quite sometime. Sometime. Sorry now. So I've been practicing pretty much the same way since it began. You might have other the paint, but that's how I create my mask outs His most efficient way for me to do it. And it gives me a results. So if you like it, make sure that I use it. So I'm gonna also change the with the color of his purple product. And I'm gonna be much use the same This in color for the picture. It is pretty much I do that on their another layer below the lining layer and mature that when that layer takes into account lining the whites who will simply put colors and it will merge with lining You don't want that right? So make sure that everything's done. It's very important that every sometimes it gives me the lights on like small dots. White dots. It doesn't feel feel sorry exactly like I wanted to. So I got us go through it, then make sure the dots are gone. This is the fun part, the coder part. That's where you see the mask up Coming to life. The colors really really gives in the is lows and insat itude everything the crop. And I'm not quite true what I did there, but I did something. Oh, yeah, I What? I did is because the drawing was was transparent. What I did it's building higher the entire page and made in white. So simply when I I, for example, are rated PG amusement transferred by ground, that keeps a character the white. It is another way to save time. So right now what I do is I heard something like I was a light and I would say another that the specialists on that field. But I do. I created my way. I don't really mind. I tried to keep the last of the light source or in this place and draw from that. I like to use two shades of colors will darker and lighter, and I find it. It's the best way to make your character pot. Sometimes when I simply use, for example, I caught a simple light source and lighter color. I find it less e. So there you go. You can even you can. You can even put more collars as long as is this in color. You could put different type of light source, and a different type of you can exaggerate if you want your enough. Limited to simply two types of variation for tree for did and it does give good results, I found out. So I'm pretty much going to do that for the rest of the video. I think I'm gonna simply put the shading that light source gonna put some of the 1000 to it . And that's pretty much I create a character. I mean, it's it's really simple when you put your mind into practice, will be able to create this this type of character and sell those to clients. Even if you're a graphic designer, you want to create something. Well, I mean, it's nice way to do it. Simple way. Don't think too much time. You just have to be diligent on the practice and make sure that, for example, if you you like a light source on, decided to switch it well over worry about that. I mean, it's digital. You don't have to do you you know you can go, and without cars, you can modify. It's no trouble. That's the best way of digital. You don't have to be a master to digitally before example. If you are business or know someone simply wants a great mascot, you can simply sketch it and send it to a digital artist. You can do that. You can can do something like that if you want. I won't bother. Also too much of my life again. Video. What I use. I do black background, so old colors that I was unable to to to sit into the line work. I simply fix it on the back of the black background season. So the character is coming to life. That's what we want. We want him to to be expressive. We want to show that something's going. No, we don't want what we don't want is applying character. What is the playing character? It's a character that that looks pretty much like a blank. You will walk on the growth and see a, for example, a character on wood and that that's what we won't want a character that that that can express himself and speak with your customer. All right, and I tried to really put as much detail as possible on pretty much every part of the fingers. Everything. The more details you put, the better off course you can go minimalists, but that's not the type of thing after for that's it. Make sure he's always liar cultures money. It's the same color. One is lighter, darker, that case. But take your time. Don't have to go fast. What I want you to do when you will create your mascot is actually to go like that. Can make it better if callers makes it, pump it or use that to your advantage. Issue said. Simply wanted. Like why drug can do that. For example. Monopoly. Yes, black and white the as a why phase. But other than that, it's pretty much like in wife character. And it was successful, So you don't you don't have to use colors if you want to go with the schedule going, then. But all right, so I do that much, contacted the entire character. I use the light source, and that's how I would very much my client when I was back in Loved it. And I believe well, it's because I was because of the character itself. Believes the way pops from the will, but from the website from the cart, that's what he wanted. That the type of feeling you wanted. Of course, you want to give for your customer when you buy his mascot, give exactly what it wants. Um, and I understood perfectly what he wanted. So even on the biceps, I will create like that. It's a nice way. Nice touch you, the muscles to your invention. Even as a big biceps we'll put some light on, Makes it bub bitter and well, for example, or fitness and promises can be useful. I know I love my star logos that used that to make the muscle Bob make the most of buck. All right, So, product, the product is actually like when the ball is dirty, you put watering it. And you like President Paul and, uh, in the in the in the world. I was in the glass and you just shake it. It's like a polish acre. You shamed into mine. All right, I think I'm gonna to make the apartment. What? Shouldn't self young then put some yellow lines to sin like the flash after I'm done doing that. 30 seconds left. We are finishing face, So making flash. And now I'm gonna just erase like everything that that is not supposed to be there using a black background. That's nice. You can use words marvelously use a like background. Awesome. Go. And we are ready for delivery. 7. Ending: So we are at the end of this, Gus and I want to congratulate you on creating a mascot. It is important when you want to sell a product that you have the best salesman available for in your team, and I believe a mascot can be that type of sales. If you enjoyed this glass, please share it in social media. Talk about it with your friends in case you really enjoyed it. And make sure that you posed your mascot design in the project section when you will pose your project here can be sure that I will provide constructive feedback to help you get better and great better mascots. As for the additional resources, you can look at skill share the following classes. You can always check. Robert Marshall is a teacher on skill share are really like it's classes. Make sure that you look at what he does you will learn and that to me, if you want to get better at drawing Robert, classes are top notch. If you want to get better, are heartened runs. You can always look at Christopher Hart books, and Resource is he's an expert in that field. Hey, was actually the first Otter. I received the book from in for cartoon Comic Strip Drawing and you can look at this book and buy it in case you want with some money. This in last and foremost, make sure to see a jazz, a book about creating a character design and jazz eyes. Also part of the teacher community on skill share. So make sure you take him out as my first experience off on skill share. I want to thank you for following my class. Please provide feedback on it so I can get better ultimately and please give a review about this class. Tell us if you like. It did not. And I will read every single one of them. So God bless and happy drawing and nappy creating goodbye.
