1. Introduction: Let's talk about
light because it can completely change the mood and atmosphere of your artwork. And in this class, I'll
show you how to use it in two completely different
ways using procreate. Hi everyone, I'm Simon. I'm an illustrator,
content creator, and top teacher on skillshare. I'm currently living in the Happy and Coty city
of Copenhagen, Denmark. This inspires me to
draw happy illustration that capture sweet
moments of my daily life. But in this class, we will
add some drama to your art, elevating your usual basic
flat drawing with some light and shadow to add extra
depth and vibrancy to it. So all you need is
an ipad procreate, and some basic
drawing experience. That's all you need as this
class is for anyone who would like to learn
more advanced procreate skills and techniques. Together we will review
some simple light theory and approach some more
advanced procreate features. Such as exploring different
types of layer modes, applying mask layers, and playing with different
types of rushes. Now, by the end of this class, you will have learned not one, but two different
techniques on procreate. First, a bright and overexposed
approach, choosing Bloom, and a dramatic one where we strategically add beams
of light for emphasis. Which one will you choose? If you're ready to
unlock the power of light and transform your
art, join this class. See you on the dark side
or maybe the bright side? Well, just watch the next video lesson and
let's get started.
2. Your Project: Lights can completely change the look and feel
of an illustration. That's why in this class, we'll be focusing on adding
that extra depth and vibrancy to your artwork using dynamic
lighting technique. Let's look at this
class projects together besides an
ipad and procreate. You will also need a simple
drawing to bring to life. Now I would recommend a line less drawing or a vector
like illustration, which consists of only color
blocks and flat shading. To learn how to make your own, check out my previous class on how to create lime less art. You can also check
out the resources of this class to get one of
my drawings to play with. All right, let's get to the good stuff because
in this class I'll be teaching you two
powerful techniques that will transform
your illustration. You'll have the option to choose between these two approaches. Let's talk about our
first technique, Bloom, that will give you
an over exposed feel. Now this technique will
give your artwork a dreamy, ethereal quality that will
captivate your audience. And I'll show you exactly how to achieve that perfect
balance of light. Globe two is using multiply
and mask for a dramatic feel. With this technique, you'll
be able to create bold, striking illustration
that commands attention. And we'll explore
how to use layers, blending mode, and mask to
create depth and intensity. Now about your project. By the end of this class, you can share with us one of your drawing using the
bright and over expose. That's option one. Or the more dramatic using multiply and
mask, that's option two. Remember whether you're a seasoned artists or
just starting out. This class is
designed to help you elevate your artwork and
explore different techniques. Grab your ipad, Fire up, procreate, and
let's get started. And I'll see you in
the next video lesson.
3. Simple Shading: All right, so we
have this image. It's nice, but it's
a little bit flat. But by adding light
on the subject, we start adding dimension
and depth to it. Let's prep this drying
by setting a few rules. The first one is to set
up the light source. As a general rule,
I like to set up my main light source on
the top right corner. This means that anything
that is away from our light source will cast some shadow and will be darker. Now to darken this area quickly, this is what I will do. The first thing that I
will ask you to do is basically to duplicate
this flat drawing. In order to do so, you'll need
a flattened version of it. Watch me take this folder, I can duplicate it, but then I make
sure to flatten it. All right, and now we have a flattened duplicate
version right on top of it. What I'm going to do now is
I'm going to press on the little n and pick multiply, have a darker version of it. Okay, Then I will start introducing the
grainy brush texture can make a world of
difference in our artwork. That's why I will use
this grainy brush to add that extra layer of texture. In that case, I'm going
to use a grainy brush to add some texture and you
can find the grainy brush. It's a free brush under
material, where is it? Noise Noise brush. Okay, now with this multiple layer, there's two things
that you could do. First, we can use a mask
and turn it all black. So this is the first thing
we're going to go here. Mask pick black. And remember that black hides. And now we're going
to use all white. Use our noise brush. And we're going to start
adding some shadows. And this is basically where our character is
away from the light. This is just to add a little bit of texture to our drawing
before prepping it. You can do this all
around your drawing. It's also a good
idea if you find the shadow to be a
little bit too strong, to double tap on this layer, on the mask layer, and then play with the intensity to lower it. Personally, I use the
multiply layer to have a quick overview of
all my darker colors. Organization is key, especially when it comes
to an efficient workflow. So I like to sample each of them and start saving
it as a color palette. I also like to use the
multiply layer to have a good overview of all the
different darker color that we have on a new layer. If I hover my finger
on top of it, then I can start selecting
the darker color. You can also save
them in a brand new palette by clicking
here on the color. Then on the plus sign,
create new palette. Where is it? It's on top. Putting here, here,
here, et cetera. Sometimes you'll need
to eye the color if it's not dark or you think
it doesn't work so well. For example, this pink, if I want it a little bit, I will just click here, Go to Classic, and then
play with it a little bit. Go back to Palette
and save it here. You can see here, for example, I've collected the colors, the light one and the dark one, and I have them as a
reference Later on, I just find it useful to
have everything there. Now remember that
practice makes perfect. And that means that knowing
how a light will hit your subject involves a lot of observation and
drawing trials. And those skills will be
super useful especially for our next technique where we
over expose our light source.
4. Technique 1: Brightening With Bloom: We've added some subtle shadows to give some depth
to your drawing. But let's not stop there. Let's add a beautiful
overexposed light to your subject and get ready
to make your artwork shine. Literally, first,
let's set the stage. Okay, now that I
have this drawing, let's focus on the
first technique. So setting up the stage, let's add a darker
blue background to create a stunning contrast. We'll think in terms of
warm and cool tones, your subject usually
the point of focus. So we will need warm light and a cooler background
to stand out. I'm going to select,
for example, this gray right here and
drop it as a background. I'm going to select the
darker blue right here on a new layer. Select tool. Use this rectangle to
fill up around the 23, Drop the color, go to
adjustment Gaussian blur. Then we're going to
increase the Gaussian blur to around 25 up and make it more dramatic. So reform bit higher. I think it's good,
but I think we can do better to enhance
the background, select a darker gray. Okay, now remember where
your light source is coming. I'm going to take this yellow, make it almost white, create a new layer. I'm going to select a
normal technical pen here. I'm going to start
with a big stroke, adding some light where it
will hit the character's face. It's important to put this
layer under Clipping mask. Clip this layer under your main flat image so then
the color doesn't overflow. You'll do this all around where you think the light
will hit the character. Once you're done, you
can start going to adjustment bloom and then
increase the bloom as desire. This is how it would look like. Do you see how shiny it is? Now to define the room
and complete the scene, add some light to the floor. Now this is good
and we just need to add a little bit more of
background in the bottom, so then we can see
that we are in a room. What I like to do in
a brand new layer, pick my select to free hands, play here once, twice, third, a little triangle, then drop your white color
on a new layer. Now make sure that
you're shading properly. So I'm going to use this
eraser and I'm going to remove with the
technical pen brush where the chair would hit, for example, where
we have shadow. Make sure this
layer is underneath the character and then go to bloom again and then start
adding the blue effect. Then also I've added an extra. I darken once again the background just to
make it more dramatic. This is how it should look like. All right, With this simple step, you've learned how to add the beautiful bloom
effect to your artwork. And now that we've
played with lights, let's play with a
little bit of darkness with our second technique
in the next video lesson.
5. Technique 2: Dramatic Light with Multiply: Now let's explore how to add some dramatic light
effect to your drawing. Let's type right into it. Let's go back to our
flattened image like this, and remember that
our light source is still on the top right corner. Now the first thing that
I'm going to do in order to darken the mood is
to do a duplicate. Then go to Adjustment
and pick gradient map. This time we're
going to pick Noir. Let's set it up as multiply. Put it on top of the
original drawing. In this case, I'm
going to lower it to 80% back to our layer. I'm going to pick a soft
brush under airbrushing. Let's pick the soft brush, pick the color black. And we're going to
start playing se, so more subtle,
using an orange hue. Begin adding shades to areas
that would be affected by the light source
on the new layer. And then you're going
to add a clipping mask. Go pick this color till my
soft brush lend to color. Gently paying attention to the natural highlights and
shadow of your subject. And repeat this process with a blue hue to create
more depth and contrast. And on the new layer, a little bit of blue. After you've repeat this, this is how it should
look like with orange. Little bit of
green, bit of blue. You can see very subtle. To enhance a dramatic effect, consider adding a
darker background. This will further
emphasize the lighting and create a visually
striking composition. Now for the background, we're going to start adding our soft to understand that this person is
sitting in a room. A little bit of texture, remember this is our wall and a little bit on
the floor as well. Now with a white
soft brush, again, where the light will be hitting, there you have it. By following the steps, you can infuse your
drawing with breathtaking, dramatic lighting experiment. Play with different
colors and intensities, and let your creativity shine.
6. Conclusion: So congratulations. You've made it till the end of this class. And as you can see, mastering
light techniques in your artwork can greatly enhance its visual
impact and depth. By understanding
concepts such as light sources,
shadows, highlights, and color temperature, you can create realistic and
captivating composition. Look at how different
the feel from these two drawings are by simply changing the
light techniques. They started from the
same flat drawing, but one is cooler
and over exposed, while the other warmer
and more dramatic. Whether you choose
to experiment with dramatic lighting,
soft illumination, or other lighting style, the key is to practice, observe, and continue learning. Now it's your turn.
