About This Class

In this course you will learn how to make decorative papers using a gelatin plate, acrylic paints, stencils and various items you make have lying around the house that can produce an interesting texture. You will learn to  print on a variety of papers you may already have such as printer paper, drawing paper and tissue paper (gift).

For your class project you will print your own background papers. When you are finished you will have amazing one of a kind designs to use in your art journals, mixed media pieces and other projects.

This class is fun, relaxing and great for all levels and ages. I have done this project with 1st graders, 4th graders and 5th graders and they all love getting their hands dirty and being able to produce OOAK pieces of artwork. I often use my gelatin prints for decoupage on my paper mache sculptures.

1. Welcome: welcome to this force. I am so excited that could be joining me. Others gelatin from making adventure. My name is success, and I am a self taught artist with over 10 years of experience. I spelt it with Air track Knees commission from making anything weeks, media. You can learn more about me on my cell off from machine patch Stop. Call my YouTube channel Paper machine. Catch on social media as you got it. Paper machine. In this course, you are going to learn how to make your own decorated people's using a gelatin plate if you don't own a gelatin, please, and prefer to make one yourself. I have included a recipe for the traditional one, which should last for the duration of this course. At the end of this course, your class project will be to make your own one of a kind. Get through to people with your gelatin needs. You can use them in your art journals. Mixed media projects on as Decca Podge beavers. Gather your supplies on Let's go have some fun 2. Supply List: Let's go through items you will need for this course. The first item you'll need is a gelatin plate. There are a variety of gelatin plates that you can purchase if you prefer to make your own . There is a recipe you can download in your project area. Cabrera is used to roll out the paint. I would recommend the speedball four inch prayer. It is a great entry level Breer at an affordable price. You also need an incomplete. You can purchase one or use a sheet of glass or a smooth path. You would also need acrylic paint. Any acrylic paint will work for this course, but I prefer the heavy bodied acrylic paint. It rules out nice and smooth on the gelatin plate. You'll also need a variety of papers. I choose mine based on what I'm going to use it for, which is usually aren't journalist or Decca posh. In this course, I used daily paper drawing paper, print to people and tissue paper. Byron is used to rub the back of your people. It is particularly helpful when using textured items such a stencils. If you do not have a baron ABRIR does the same job or the back of a wooden spoon. You'll also need found objects for patterns by phone objects. I mean items you may have laying around the house. I used bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard yarn or string mesh bags from fruits and vegetables on the market tool that I made with an old health card. Credit cards, hotel room keys and iTunes cards are all great for this experiment with various designs. Just ensure that none of your tools are sharp as you don't want to cut your plate. You will also need a variety of stencils on hand for this project. I have included a few links in the supply list that you can download from your project area . Combine your imagination and a gelatin pleats on the results will be boundless. 3. Lesson 1: Your first layer: Let's get started with the first layer in this layer, we're going to add a plain background. Add page to your village. Complete a rouleau with your prayer. Limit yourself to about three colors as you don't want your print to get muddy. If you add too much paint, you can always remove some eye rolling on your incomplete. Continue to roll out your pain until the gelatin plate is evenly covered. Get your paper and place on your gelatin plate. Rub the back gently and remove. I am using deli paper for the sprint. You can use another sheet of paper and gently press on the plate, removing the remainder off the paint. This is called the Ghost Print. Continue with another people. This time I am using drawing paper. Follow the same steps again. Put some paint on your gelatin plate. Roll out the paint with your prayer until smooth. Please the paper on the gelatin plate and rub the back. Live to the paper off gently from a corner. You can use any paper you like for gelatin prints. Just think about what you're going to use them for. When you're choosing your paper, continue to add paint rollout and do more prints. - I am now used in regular printer paper for these prints. These are my final set of prints. I am using tissue paper, the type you get in a gift. The wrinkles in this paper give a very interesting texture. Once you are finished, your first layer set your prince aside to dry. When they are dry, you can move on to the next lesson. 4. Lesson 2: Using found objects as texture: for this layer, we're going to use some items you may have lying around the house way. We're going to begin with bubble wrap. Add your pain to your plate as you did before and roll out with your prayer. Police a piece of bubble wrap on the plate and gently rub the back. Lived off and put aside. No place some yarn or string on the plate, however you like. Get one of your papers and place it on the plate. Rub the back, paying special attention to where the arness lift your paper off to reveal a fabulous print . I removed the strings, ended another print ghost print. Apply paint again to the plate and rollout. Thisted time. I am using a piece of mesh from a back of oranges. Place the mesh bag over the gelatin plates on, then the paper, rub the back of the paper. I am using a barren to rub the back of the paper so I can apply a bit more pressure than I do with my hand. If you don't have a barren, use the back of a wooden spoon or your prayer. Remove the mesh and make a second print apply paint as usual and spread out evenly. I am using a piece of corrugated cardboard. No placed the cardboard on the plate. Press down gently and remove. Place the paper on the plate. Rub the back and remove. Isn't that beautiful? Apply paint as usual. Thisted time. I am using a finer mesh from a bag of garlic and some yarn. Arrange on your plate. Place the paper on top and rub the back with your baron or wooden spoon. Remove your paper. - Now I am going to use a homemade texture tool. I caught a wave a pattern on one end of an old health card. Credit cards, iTunes card shop cards. All will do. You use the card at a pattern on the plate. Place the paper on the plate, rub the back and remove. Continue to play with their gelatin plates, using your phone texture tools until all your papers have a second layer way. Put them aside to dry before you move onto the next lesson. 5. Lesson 3: Adding a third layer using stencils: Let's get started with layer three. Gather your prints that you made in the last lesson I pay to your gelatin pleats and roll out with your prayer. Place a stencil on the plate, place your paper on top of the stencil and gently rub the back, paying special attention to the edges of the stencil. You could use a baron for this or a Breyer or a wooden spoon. Lift off your paper to reveal your print. Remove the Stansell and make another print. Let's go through this one more time. Paint your gelatin plates on. Rule out with your prayer. Place a stencil on top of the plate and place your paper on top of the stencil. Rob the back of your paper on lift the paper. After reveal your fabulous print, remove the stencil and make another print. - Continue with your other prints very in your color palette and your stencils. - Keep going until all your prints have 1/3 Leo. Let your prints drive for 24 hours and then you can use them in your art journal on Expedia projects 6. Class Project: congratulations on completing all of your lessons for your class project. You will make your own decorated papers using your gelatin plate. Remember the three steps Layer Juan. Print a plain background. They're too. Add patterns with your phone items. Layer three at patterns using your stencils. Remember, your print needs to dry between each layer. Don't forget to share your projects with us in the project gallery. 7. Bonus: This is a bonus video on gelatine, printmaking, um, making fabulous backgrounds on. I'm gonna show you how we can use plants. These are from a bamboo plant I have in my backyard. So I'm gonna use those to make my background gelatin prints. I have my Briere's. And I'm using a ceramic tile as my palate to rule out my paint on. And I'm going to be used in Iridescent Coppola Persian Blue Hooker's green on This is buff titanium. I am working on stamp endless Mona printing plate. These are a little bit thinner, then, uh, jail press and the jells jelly printing plates. But they're fine. I think there might be a bit cheaper also. So I'm just gonna place this on high matt hair. You want to put away that protective backing because you use it to store your plate. So I'm just gonna place the stone. I wanted this way actually on move this out the way I'm gonna be using my daily paper. All right, so let's begin. It's like I said before. It's good to work from light to dark. I am going to start with my boon White, My arm. Titanium. Both brother, which is similar to a bone, right? Really? When you look at it that way and also I'm gonna add some because green to that. So of course we begin by just ruling out. I just kind of mixing these on the plate as we go along. I'm just removing some of the paint because I've added a bit too much. Of course, if you're using printing ink, you would start on the palate first and work the ink until it gets nice and crackly. Then you would add it. So your plate. So I'm just gonna go ahead and do a print. I'm not really concerned about lining anything up because these air just background papers . So here we go. But that one aside to dry weight can take go Sprint, which, as you remember, is, uh, second on print. You just get a little bit of paint, but that's fine for my second Lear. I am going to use my iridescent couple. Add a little that I didn't bother clean my my prayer because I'm not bothered about it being dirty. I just want to make sure that I cover the plate, the gold. I mean, with the copper rather, and then decide what I am going to use as my texture. I do want some of that green to show through, so I definitely will do something that removed some of this paint. So let me see. I have my secret waste. I have my sequin waste. I'm just gonna go ahead and remove bits and pieces here and there a little bit more right there. Then thing is just, um, corrugated cardboard. We're just gonna roll that over like that, Get some legs here in there. Not while that how it looks. And then finally, I'm just gonna go ahead and just, you know, scrape some areas just making a random pattern on. Let me do that, Frank. Quickly before my paint dries. Critic feet does drive faster. Um, if you find that your paint is drying too fast, you can by open acrylic medium. I think it's by golden on. It definitely helps when you're printing with the critic paints because it makes the paint Oslo. It doesn't affect the color of the paint totality apace. It is the same on the pigmentation is a seen. What it does is it slows known the drying process. So when you're working with Mona Printing, you still get a nice print, as you can see from this one, like a lot of my pain dried on their But that's OK. We'll just keep going. I'm just gonna add some tight in buffalo with this, Actually, planet will pick up the cough of things under it. Find other French hair, please. That on there. We're just give it a good press. Okay, this couple paint is drying way too fast. So I decided I am actually going to use some of my open acrylic medium on, add it to the couple paint and rule that out. I am then gonna cover my plate with this stencil. And instead of lifting the stencil and and doing the print out I'm going to do is you some paper tall? Or you could use another sheet of faithful on just pick up for the paint. Then I'm going to remove my stand. So if you have an art journal handy, you can just press this Don't. And that would definitely be a nice pattern. But for no, I'm just going Teoh, go ahead on do a second print there. We go. That's very interesting. That would give us a nice background for our Leafs. All right, let me just grab another piece of daily people that clean up my palate. I said, sometimes you go sprint. See, that's a nice ghost print. I like that one a lot. All right, Now, um, well, we have some pain left, so I'm just gonna go ahead, do another one. Just adding more gold to this paper being it's not fully covered. I'm a copper, right? Rather keep saying gold, but it's actually iridescent cop off this particular painted by P View. We have a local supply here, so it's easy for me. That's actually a very nice background. Okay, so our next print is gonna be with the Persian blue. I'm just gonna add a little a little of my open medium and just paint is going off. As you can see, it's a bit lumpy, but that's OK. We'll be fine once you mix it with the medium. So just roll this out as you would in any other gelatin print on. Then what we're gonna do is used the bamboo plants that we have her and just arrange them. I would recommend that when you take the print for this one that you do use a Brera of some sort. I think this too will be great. So I'm going to do it like that. And then maybe just a little of this swan right here. And what's gonna happen is that the areas where the Leafs are those air going to remain the copper color like on this. So let's go ahead and put these down. Like I said, a prayer is very Or if you had a barren or back of a giant, wouldn't schoolwork visible? Because when you're going over rougher textures like beliefs, it's, You know, you really have to get down in there to pick up all the detail because you want a nice, sharp image around those leafs. So we go over like that, paying attention. So the edges, as you can see here, I've gotten the edges. We go right up to the edge off the gelatin plate. Let's see what we have now This one is gonna be all the negative space of where the plants were. As you can see, it's not that detailed. However, the next print we're gonna pull up these leaves like that, it's gonna arrest them aside. As you can see, a couple of them fell off, but that's fine. And then we're going to use this friend now 90 top, as best as possible over it with your Braille, and you will end up this fabulous print. I love it. Wow, it's beautiful on another one, Quickly. Okay, now that's a ghost Sprint worth keeping. That's fantastic. Also, this print hair that we had left, which doesn't have that much detail. Um, you could go back with the Leafs if you like, and just press them on, pick up some of the paint off of them and some of the texture. It's a little bit more in this leave here. We can just add that right here in this area. And there you have it. Another fabulous print. That is it for my bonus class. Um, as you can see, you can use items from your garden leaves, sticks, grass, you name it on, get fabulous texture in your gelatine prints. These are three beautiful prints that we did today. Fabulous background papers. You could also do something like this on. Regular people would make up If you frame this matted and framed this, it would look beautiful.
