Learn how to design using components.  The end product will be a useful soap dish that can be 3D printed. We'll also learn how to use several powerful tools including rectangular pattern, mirror tool, shell tool, and the web tool among others.

Vladimir Mariano is the instructor of the course 3D Designing for 3D Printing with Fusion 360. He is cofounder and president of the Fairfield County Makers' Guild, an independent makerspace in Norwalk, CT and founder of CT Robotics Academy. He teaches 3D printing and design at the makerspace as well as electronics and programming classes. Vladimir also teaches several maker related classes at local libraries and schools and was the coach for a local robotics team. 1. 01 Intro: 2. Offset Update: before we jump into the soap dish design, there's been an update to Fusion 3 60 Well, there's been a few updates, but this one has to do specifically with the offset command. And we're gonna use it a few times here in this lesson. So I wanted to throw a quick video to show you what to expect. I'm going to start by just creating a rectangle here. I'll go toe to point rectangle and then I'm gonna grab the offset command by going to modify and down to offset. Okay, Now I get this dialog box and I select my profile. And here's the part I want you to be careful with. So notice if I bring the little widget in words, I'm getting a negative number here. And if I go outwards from getting a positive number now, this isn't always going to behave the same way as fusion has recently changed how they define whether this is going to be negative or positive. So what's important here is to see what direction I'm going. If I'm going inside, you want to mimic that, and if I'm going outside, you want to make that as well. So Let's say I say, Do ah offset of 10 millimeters and I say enter 10 and you see that the red line is inside the profile. And so you go ahead and answer 10 and you want to pay attention here because in certain cases in May, flip on you and go outside of that profile. If that's the case, which you want to do is do a negative 10. Or you can simply use this little flip button here and that'll flip it. So pay less attention to whether I say negative or positive in careful attention toe wear that direction. If it's inside this profile or outside specifically with this design, we're gonna get to a point where I'm going to say, answer a two millimeter offset and you're gonna see me drag inwards and you're gonna enter to and you're gonna see it, Flip it to the outside. So in that case, what you're gonna do is just simply change it to a negative, too, or you can use this little flip icon. So again, what's important is that you follow my direction of the officer. If it's inside, you want to follow it. And if it's outside. You want to do the same, and that may require you to change whether this number is positive or negative. So keep that in mind as you go through this lesson and you'll be fine. 3. 02 Create Component: All right. Welcome back. Glad to see you're still with me and that you stuck around. So far, you're on your way to becoming a three d designing guru. So let's go ahead and get started. As you can see, I have the soap dish here on my screen, and the soap dish is gonna allow us to start working with components. So what I mean by that is if you look here on the left side of the browser, you see that I have two different items here. One called the outer shell, which I can tire line and off an analysis. I have this great that Aiken Tyrell on and off. Um, the deal with components is you'll want to use them when you're models contain more than one part. And I'll explain a little more as we get going as to why this is important and how this is going to make your designs a lot cleaner and also the advantage of using them. Put for now, we'll just go ahead and get started. So let's go ahead and start with a new design and we will save this. So let's go ahead and click. Save and we'll give it a name of soak knish. I'm going to throw this one in my tutorial designs Project folder and click safe. Okay, So as we were talking about components, that's the first thing you're going to want to do right after you save. So we'll go ahead and right click on the top of our browser where we've named it Soapdish and go and click on new Component. And you'll see it will create a new box here, gives a name component one, and we can go ahead and rename that. So click on it and then click on it one more time and that will highlight it. And we're gonna call this one outer show and it ends. You can see this little radio button is selected, meaning the component is now active. So we will start working within that component. And if you click on this little area, we can start expanding it in. All our sketches embodies for within that component will be under this outer shell. Okay, so let's go ahead and jump right at. And, uh, just to warn you, I'm gonna move at a bit of a faster paced And what? Uh you've been used to. I feel we've gotten to a point now where I can start speeding things up. So to begin, we'll go ahead and start with a sketch. So create sketch. And remember, since this is activated, everything we're designing right now is gonna be within this component. Okay, so let's choose our X y plane, and we're gonna go ahead and choose a center rectangle, start at the origin and give this a dimension of 80 by 1 20 Okay, Next I'm gonna grab my fillets command, So sketch fill it when I'm gonna click on each of these corresponding corner. So one there to here three and four and I'm gonna enter a fillip of 10 millimeters as our diameter and hit Enter can I'm gonna hate you for extrude Click on my, uh, rectangle and give this an extrusion of 20 millimeters. Okay, so let's go to our top. Actually will go right to our front. And now we're going to go ahead and shell this out so we'll go to modify shell, click on the top and we're gonna choose and outside, um, direction and the thickness of 1.6 millimeters and click. OK, 4. 03 Add Standoff Supports: All right, there's our show. And let's go back to our finished design. Just Teoh, show you what we're gonna do next. So the next thing we want to do is create these Ah, little stands, um, to go ahead and be able to support our great. So are Gray is going to stand on top of that and we need something to hold it. So let's go ahead and do that. So in order to do that, I'm just gonna go back to that original sketch and just added it. So let's go ahead and expand the outer shell, and then we'll go ahead and expand sketches and we can go ahead and double click on sketch one, and that's gonna bring us back to editing our original sketch eso that's go ahead and choose offset. And we're gonna click on the outer perimeter. Give this an offset of two millimeters. Okay, Now, in order to create, uh, there's little standoffs. We're gonna go ahead and grab the line tool by clicking l and we will just go ahead and grab the corner here and just connect these lines were just going to use our existing grids has sort of guides and connect these together. So now we have this sort of profile that we can select. Um, this is a good way to go ahead and use the mirror tool. So let's will mirror that on this side, and then we're gonna go ahead and take the whole thing in mirror to the bottom. So before we can do that, let's go ahead and create some mirror lines. So I'm gonna hand l for line and I'm going to start this one at the top here, right, Nets center. And we'll go ahead and bring this down and connected to this center point here, and we'll do the same thing across on this because I'm just gonna start at the center. You go up to this line, okay, So let's go to sketch mirror. I'm going to select thes two lines that I created and for my mirror line, going to select this line here, and it's gonna throw those lines over here, So let's go out and just select it. You can see that these lines were created so I can click OK, And again, I can not select this as its own profile. Let's do the same thing, but this time mirror these to the bottom. So I'm just going to right click and go to repeat mirror and make my selections again. So want who you can see here. Every time I selected object, this will increase. So we're at two. And this will make three. And for now, for the mirror line that's going and click on it and we're gonna select This is our Merrill Light. So by doing that, now we see we have 12 here. 34 lines that were created Click OK, all right. So now that we have our mayor lines, we can go ahead and extrude these up. But we're not going to that quite yet because I'm gonna show you when I haven't printed this and put the grate on top and then he actually used that. I found that the with the weight of the soap, this actually started sagging in the middle. So we're going to create some a couple more offs. Standoffs one appear and one in the bottom here. So in order to do that, I'm hit t for trim and let's get rid of this line. We don't need that anymore. And then let's go ahead and choose offset and we'll offset this line well. Offside at four millimeters in this direction, right quick repeat offset, and we'll do a negative four. So we offset in the other direction. Now we can click on this line of hits leet and hit T for trim, and we'll go ahead and trim these lines that we don't need anymore. So that should leave us with this profile here. In this profile, I have top. I'm gonna go ahead and click, Stop, sketch and will uncheck body and check sketches, Andy for extrude. And we'll have in select each of these profiles that we created. And we can now check bodies back on and we'll grab our arrow. Drag this up. We can see that they start moving up. I'm going to give this a distance of 10 millimeters, which will put us right at the center and hit. Enter, let's get rid of the sketch and there we go. So there's our outer shell and that's all set. So now let's go ahead and see will compare with our previous one. So the only difference is we added those standoffs in the middle here 5. 04 Model Grate: Okay, so now we are ready to create are great. So we'll go ahead and create a new component. In order to do that, we'll right click at the top of our browser here, click on new component. Click on this twice, and we will give this the name great. And again it automatically activated it so well, now, being in designing are great. Okay? To begin our great I'm gonna go ahead and shoes this the top of this standoff here as a plane to start drawing on. So there's a couple way I can go about this. I can create an offset plane. Said it 10 millimeters from the top of the bottom surface here because I know top of this is right at 10 millimeters. All right. Can just reference, you know, any one of these as my top as a plane to start drawing. So that's what I'm going to do. So I'm gonna go to creates catch, and we'll just go ahead and let's say I'll choose. This guy has where I'm gonna put that plane. Um, Now I'm gonna go ahead and project some geometry in here, so I p for project and I'm gonna go ahead and choose. I'm gonna pick each of these outlines here. Um, actually, if you click right in the middle here between the walls, it'll just select the whole thing as not line. I'm to project and it is. Go ahead and click, OK, And I can get rid of bodies and see that I have east to outlines here. I don't need these outer ones, so I'm just going to click on that and hit Delete. Now I have this inner in her outline and also you're gonna believe thes lines right here that were created because I chose that as the surface to draw my plane. So just get rid of these lines just to clean it up a little bit, OK, so we should just be left with this sort of outer perimeter. I'm going to choose on offset now, Um, and the reason I'm going to do that is, uh I want to create this great, but I don't want it to be flush with this outer wall if I start drawing it at the exact distance that that wall, um is that it's not gonna fit, because when I print it, if that's the same distance as the wall. It won't. You won't be able to fit. So I have to come factor in a little tolerance and make this a little bit smaller. I'll show you what I mean. So let's go ahead and scored a sketch and we'll choose Offset. And we're going to give this an offset of 0.2 millimeters. So, um, let's go ahead and grab. Offset. You want to select? For some reason, If I go here, it's not highlighting the whole thing. But if I go on the side, it does so picking area that you see the hole hope of violence up highlighting and dragged this and you can see the number starts increasing. So we're going to call this a 0.2 millimeter offset. Okay, so now that we have that offset and I'm gonna grab another offset and so we're gonna goto sketch repeat offset has grabbed that same outer line. Um, for some reason, you can't offset a line that you previously offset. So we have to still continue working with this outer lines going to click on that, and I'm going to give this an offset of 2.2 millimeters okay, And let's go back in and we're gonna double click that while, which should highlight the whole um, you know, that whole line, that whole profile, we're gonna have to leave and sure, that again. Okay, so now we should just be left with serve business. Enter profile, which I'm gonna hit the for extrude Click on it. Hand will go ahead and extrude this up. Two millimeters on head into. Okay, so there's are sort of, um, outlined the perimeter of our great and let me show you what we did there. So I'm gonna if I turn on the soap dish that inactivate the top component that activates all our components, I'm gonna click on that and all you have to do. Just make sure all your body's air on. So here's my outer shell. Go ahead and expand this and this light bulb for the bodies has to be on, and that'll turn on that show. Same thing with the great. Make sure you go to your bodies and that both light bulbs are on now. So here's what we did. So if I zoom in, you're gonna notice that there's a little gap in between that great in that outer wall. That's what we did with that offset. That's that 0.2 millimeter gap. So we can actually, if we hit the keyboard Letter n on our keep at, um What that does is it'll arbitrarily assigned colors to our components. So this will make it easier to see So you can see that our great is blue in our outer shell is, uh, sort of this peach color. Your colors will probably be a different. It seems I get different colors every time I do it. Um, but the important thing to realize here is OK, so we have two different components on Gwen. We hit the keyboard and adjust. That makes it easier to see by giving them different colors. And we can see that we have a little spacing in between there 6. 06 Rectangular Pattern: Okay, so let's continue working with our greats. So I'm going to now go from, you know, de selecting that the whole, you know, the entire model by going back and activating just a great notice when I do that. And so if I go, if I have the whole thing selected, my entire timeline is shown on the bottom. Now, if I go on when when I select Great. My timeline just shows what was made for that great. Which makes it very easy to go back and add it. Your work again. That's that's one of the advantages of using components, hurries and components. So I'm going to de select the Saudi show because I just want to see my great for now. And I'm going to go back and just added that first sketch. I'm gonna double click on the timeline here that that sketch and I'm gonna head out for lie . I'm gonna go ahead and draw a line right at the center, from the top to the bottom and make sure you get that reference midpoint triangle. Okay, I'm gonna introduce something new, and that's going to be rectangular pattern. So we're gonna go to sketch rectangle rectangular pattern and we get the style like box. It's telling us to choose the object that we want to pattern. I'm gonna choose this line, and now we can see that that box expanded gives it gave us a bunch more choices. Um, so Okay, just stay with me and we'll go through these and highlight the important things and she see what's going on. So if I grab this arrow and I start bringing it over, he can see that it repeats that live. It gave me three because under quantity, I've got three selected. So notice if I change that so four or five continuously will continue to add lines for distance type I have. This has extensive, but you have not option to go to spacing. Extent means that if I so you see. If I drag this out this distance, um will continue to increase or it'll change, decrease or increase. That's showing what that's asking. What what's the extent? How far do you want to drag that lie? Well, I want to drag it to about right here, so I no, that that's about the distance of 50 millimeters. I'm actually just type it in under distance. Okay, now let's go down one and go to direction. This is set to one direction, but I can change that to symmetric. And it took those five lines and it made him symmetric. So basically, put two on this side two on that side with one in the middle equals five, and I can continue increase that notice. What happens if I go from 5 to 6? You know it. It can't make that evenly distributed because with six lines, it will have to do, you know, counting the middle line. It'll it'll do three on one side and two on the other. But if I add one more, let's say we'll make that seven. Now you see that they're evenly distributed. So we have one in the middle and three on each side. Okay, so we talked about quantity distance, and we made it symmetric. Now we can go to ah, this spot in part. What? Basically, we're looking to just pattern this in one direction. We just need to worry about the top half, but I'll briefly explain what the bottom part the So if I zoom out and the bottom part basically allows us to also pattern IHS and the other direction. So right now I'm going one direction, which is, uh, you know, to the right here in our X direction. But if I want to go in our Y direction, I can drag this arrow up. And as you can see, it creates another pattern going up. And I can change that as well. See if I go to quantity and change that too, you know, bleat one and give it to same thing with distance. You can see if I dragged us down. That's gonna change that distance. But ah, what we're doing. I only wanted to pat it in one direction. So I'm just gonna change this back toe one and not worry about that other direction. So I have a quantity of seven a distance set to an extent of 50 and which created this even the distribution of lines that I want. I'm going to click OK, 7. 06 Web Tool: all right. Next. What I want to do is create this sort of, um, this great by giving thickness to those lines. Now, the way I would normally approach this is I would let's say I would probably give these an officer and then take that profile and extruded up, but actually found a way that works quite well and just saves a few steps. So we're gonna go ahead and I was click on Stop sketch, and we're gonna go to create and shoes web. Okay, Now, you see our sketches gone, so we have to turn it back on. So I'm gonna go in there great to find my sketches and turn on that light bulb. Now, it's gonna ask me to select the curve. Always pay attention to the dialogue boxes, because that would kind of guide you on what you need to do. As far as the curve you can see, I can select these individually, or I'm just gonna draw a box around, um, from right to left, and it will select all of them. If you're getting a weird box. Look up here under your selection. Sometimes it may be set to free form which gives you this sort of weird, uh, selection option. Go ahead and just choose a window selection and go ahead and choose right to left. You'll have it. I should say you have fact thing selected and it's not gonna right now. Actually, we go. Let's go into the thickness and war. Enter thickness of four millimeters. If you're getting these errors like I am here, go ahead and go where it's his flip direction and click on that and that should solve it. Actually. So there is a problem that I didn't select everything. So let's go ahead and go. You're gonna go back to my selection and remake that selection and shoes. Um, it should be seven curves. Okay, Now, if you went ahead and clicked again in that flip direction, um, it should be able to go ahead and give you the thickness we're looking for and click. OK, leave everything else just as I have here. Just click, OK, and there we go. Now we have our great that we were able to make, So let's go back now. And that's toggle this outer shell body to turn it on and we're gonna actually, it's titled at the top of our browser here to turn everything on and let's remove our sketches and we should have something like this. So here, here's my soap dish with the great in there, which I can tackle on or off. And also the outer show on Enough. Um, so there we go. That looks good home, and we can print thes if we would print thes separately or you can put them together, but you wouldn't want to print it as is, you would you would want to lay these out flat on the bed. 8. 07 Add Curve: um so that looks good. I'm gonna do one more thing, which is give this a little bit of a establish age to it. So ah, in order to do them, just gonna add sort of a curve to this. Ah, outer show, and I'll show you what I mean. So again, since I'm working on that outer shell, I'm gonna want to toggle this on to activate that component right now you can see that the entire timeline is shown on here. So if I go ahead and select Outer show, it just gives me that timeline for that show, and I'm gonna they select the great option here. Okay, so let's go to the sketch. Creates catch. And I'm gonna choose this outer wall here as my sketching plane. And I'm just gonna grab a three point arc. I am not going to be extremely precise. He I'm just sort of going to, um, come out here and grab. Ah, it's a I'm gonna come close to this. Ah, grid to second grade here as my first point. Come back here to the second great on this side, and I'm going to give this a little bulge. Just right before I hit the top, okay? And I'm gonna head out for a line, and I'm just going to kind of draw box around that arc, and I'm gonna hit. Stop, sketch. I'm going to select this profile. And also make sure you select these two profiles, this one in this one in here. Ah, control are alter for Mac. And we're gonna hit you for extrude and push this. And so I'm gonna for distance. I'm just gonna choose all and then click. OK, and there we go. That gave us sort of a nice little curve feature there. And I'm gonna go ahead and turn on the top so we can see everything and also turn on the great. And there we go. So there is our soap dish. You can go ahead and print this and use it again. If you want to tackle the colors on or off, you can just hit. And, um but this is this is a great print. Go ahead and practice doing this a few times. You may have to go through this tutorial a few times for everything. This thing can We did kind of cover a lot here. Um, but go ahead and enjoy your new soap dish.
